I spent a few hours with Nature Calgary at Mallard Point. We had a lovely walk and saw many species but most were too far away for photos. I was impressed that we saw a garter snake and a Grey Partridge!

Thanks for your visits and comments! They are all greatly appreciated!

Not the best, but excited to see this male Northern Harrier tonight.

Just another in the endless cycle of trains that pulled up here and parked.

There is a reason CPKC is making the massive investment in a second parallel bridge over the Rio Grande and this is an example. There was never a moment when I was in town that I didn't observe at least two or three trains queued up side by side in Union Pacific's ex MoPac yard just north of the bridge. And this was only what I could see, not whatever was held in sidings north of the city or up at UP's big Port Laredo yard and then of course CPKC had all their own trains staged. 24 hrs a day something was crossing the bridge one way or the other and it was clear that the KCS was right in their decision to make this investment with train counts constantly maxing out the 26 per day capacity.

Seen pulling up to tied down just north of the Zaragoza Street grade crossing across from the yard office in the old MoPac station is the MEWMX 28 (manifest Englewood Yard to CPKC de México in Laredo). A pair of rebuilt UP C44ACMs (orignally GE AC4400CWs) bracket unrebuilt KCSM 4564, a 24 yr old AC440CW built as TFM 2664 and still wearing its weather beaten gray ghost paint job.

This beautiful dark wolf was enjoying lunch when we arrived at the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center. I believe it was eating a piece of meat rather than the fish steak its lighter-colored pack-mate found for its lunch.

I'm much more familiar with the individual citizens living at Montana Grizzly Encounter near my home than I am with the specific animals housed at the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center just outside of Yellowstone's entrance at the town of West Yellowstone, Montana.

However, at GWDC the animals are clearly healthy and seem to be happy in captivity where they don't have to concern themselves with where there next meal is coming from or other risks of life in the wild.

The GWDC is a wildlife park that provides sanctuary for grizzly bears, wolves, otters, raptors, and other wildlife that, due to a variety of circumstances, such as captive breeding, would not be able to survive if released to the wild. The facilities for husbandry are superb, and the public education programs are top notch.

Gray Catbirds are relatives of mockingbirds and thrashers, and they share that group’s vocal abilities, copying the sounds of other species and stringing them together to make their own song. The most common call is a raspy mew that sounds like a cat.

Ever notice how the teeth of wild carnivores (even though this one spent its entire life in captivity) are white and clean, compared to those of our domestic pets, who may have to go to the veterinarian at least once a year for dental care under anesthesia?
