A wolf called "Big Gray" let's loose a howl before he and his three companions ( 2 males - both dark and one with a collar, and a gray female) engaged a large herd of bison in Lamar Valley. Not sure if the howls were a signal to start the hunt or were just out of the excitement and joy of the hunt about to begin. The 4 wolves tested the herd for weaknesses by circling around them but on this day the bison did not give them much hope for success, and they eventually made their way west down the valley.
The Blue-gray Gnatcatcher is the northernmost-occurring species of gnatcatcher, and the only truly migratory one. Most members of its genus are resident in Central and South America. Our Oklahoma birds spend the winters in Mexico. The yellow gape on this bird indicates YOY.

Frenetic, frustrating little birds to photo. I burned a lot of frames on this one. Finally Carolyn said "Don't you have enough photos of this bird?" So we moved on. This one was the last frame. There's a moral here somewhere. Our beautiful world, pass it on.

Gray ghost surprise!!
It's always good to wash your fruit in the morning. You may ask...."But why?".....The answer...because it means you're facing your big sliding glass doors and might spot something wonderful out in the open space behind your house. That's exactly what happened. I saw a hawk come swooping in and land right behind my fence. I assumed it was our resident red-tailed hawk.....but when I went over to look...it was flying away from me and I could see it had a white patch on top of it's tail which could only mean a Northern Harrier. However, what I didn't expect was that it was a MALE harrier or as many call it a Grey ghost!!! We have never seen a male harrier hunting behind our house. I made some inaudible sounds with my excitement.....grabbed my camera and bolted out of the back door. I really didn't expect it to hang around very long, and it didn't. It flew out of sight, but then back in sight, and then repeated this numerous times. Finally he started making some circles and made a few passes right in front of me. He also managed to fly with some very nice fall colors behind him in the distance. I will have a few more to share, but here are some of my favorites.

Undisturbed, this covey foraged constantly. Occasionally, one would raise its head to check things out. This is the way they appeared most of the time. Camas NWR SE Idaho.
These are coming through at the same time as Swainson's; Hermit Thrush tend to migrate later. Maumee Bay SP.

Record id shot.
But amazing to me what post-processing can pull out, from an unbelievably bad dark shot taken in deep shade. I had just been shooting something high up in the light and had not completely adjusted values. raw helps.
Ok, this is a totally loser parking lot shot, but with my move (and now a horrible cold), I've been pretty bad at my photo every day routine. So, other than the background, it's a tolerable shot of a Junco not found back east.

*On a personal note: We didn't want to bother Doug when we saw him eating dinner after the show with his family, but I had to say something as I walked past him. I said, "Thank you Sir, for 50 years of enjoying your shows!" He reached out to shake my hand, with BOTH of his hands, and graciously responded with his own thanks! What a warm man! - Unbelievably, 2 weeks before, he 'friended' us on Facebook and invited us to join one of his 4 Facebook pages!

Just a new gallery with pictures I taken some time ago. At the moment it is too warm (it is summer 2018) to take new pictures - or at least I'm not in the mood to take new pictures. Hope you like! Have a good time!

Explore #411
Bunnies are either very scarce or very well hidden around here because this is only one of maybe half a dozen I've seen since moving here 6 years ago.
And they are HUGE.......this one was almost the size of a medium-sized dog!!
EDIT: The reason for the large size is due to it being what's called a swamp rabbit....they have rounder ears and are twice the size of a full-grown cotton-tail.
