It's that time of year when the annual battle between me and other denizens of the northwoods is engaged for the fruits of the field. I have learned to watch attentively as a few days can mean the difference between a nice harvest and nothing....seemingly, unlike me, other locals do not receive any gratification from sharing. There are enough wild blackberry patches to keep everyone happy and I've already picked a peck (I've always wanted to use that phrase, but admittedly the opportunity rarely arises. Sunday pop quiz: What the heck is a peck anyway?). However, my lone grape vine which I rescued and rejuvenated through some judicious and harsh pruning upon my arrival has been a bit trickier. A few years ago, I lost every bunch on the vine the very night before I was going to pick them. This was frustrating. And tho they are Concord grapes (certainly the derivation of the phrase "sour grapes"), it makes me feel a bit heroic as I force a handful down and convince myself that they're pretty good.
In any event, I decided to hire the above fellow last year to keep an eye on things for me. He did such a good job that I decided to rehire him and though it is admittedly seasonal work, it bears some resemblance to the Napa Valley from whence he supposedly hails. (Perhaps you know him, Karen.) And, lest anyone be concerned, he is legal and would be eligible under the new immigrant rules in any event. I am also paying his benefits. So far, things progress well and I am happy to say that I have a record number of bunches ripening. I may give him a bonus.

Today, my Paper White Narcissus bulbs bloomed, a sweet breath of live in the midst of winter! The three bulbs had been a gift from a very considerate student. Thank you, J.W.; the flowers both look & smell wonderful! I put up three pictures, because I couldn't choose between them & felt we all probably need a hint of Spring! January 26, 2010 in Columbia County, New York, USA.
Paper whites (Narcissus papyraceus, a sub-species of Narcissus tazetta) are popular indoor plants for winter and the holiday season. Unlike other narcissus, paper whites don't require a chilling period, so forcing them is as easy as putting the bulbs in water and waiting. The fragrant flowers bloom within about 3 weeks of planting, for almost instant gratification.
This is a continuation of my "Save the Family" theme promoting the importance of the family unit and the necessity of parents having sufficient time to dedicate to their children enabling them to have sufficient time to teach their children the fundamentals of life, the importance of honesty, diversity etc enabling their children to be better prepared with confidence for their future. In today's world we seem to be all about instant gratification and are inclined to use technology unwisely, to play violent games, use technology as a baby sitter (sometimes I admit it is the only thing that a parent can do), spend less real time with family, friends and acquaintances. We spend over family meals, reading, creating, imagining and appreciating nature. Work seems to have become the priority, whereas it should be of great importance but family should always come first and people leading the workforce should find creative ways to give more time to families. It seems that some of the smaller companies and organizations often think of their staff with more understanding and compassion.
We also have to look at the many fleeing war, rape, famine, climate change and the many other concerns facing families today and we have to learn how to make room in this world for everyone! We all belong to the human race. I am going to refer you to my daughter's poem, which she wrote for a painting of mine and which you may have read before as I have already used it a couple of times. It eloquently explains our family's beliefs:
Coming Together
Asian, Latin, European, African,
native, indigenous, foreign, alien,
descriptions that fall short,
vague splotches on the canvas of life.
All have but one heart that beats,
blood is but one color.
Flesh and features, each unique
organs and muscles, identical.
Each face a work of art
each mark distinctively it's own.
The beauty of our differences
far surpasses mere mortal comprehension.
Each unmatched culture,
its own vibrant combination of colors and sounds,
the pulsing of a nation, a people.
These different beats unite,
to make the music of our world.
As each exceptional voice blends with the other,
the harmony of humanity rises
high above the dark clouds of oppression and ignorance.
North, south, east, west,
a baby's cry is but the same.
The pang of hunger and indifference
changes not with skin color.
In the ears of every mother and father
every sister and brother
the cries of oppression should ring loud.
A call to action, a call to save our human family.
Our differences are but brush strokes on this canvas,
each unique in shape and color
when viewed together...
from the masterpiece of mankind.

According to statistics of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conversation Department, the total population of wild monkeys in Hong Kong is about 1,800 distributed in 30 social troops. The existing species are the Rhesus Macaque (Macaca mulatta), the Long-tailed Macaque (M. fascicularis) and their hybrids.
understated elegance. not nearly as brilliantly plumaged as her consort, but nonetheless a beautiful bird. ;)
an aside: i get a kick out of getting a half-way decent image of these things with feathers, and from the kind comments folks leave. but the most gratification comes from folks that say "hey, i'm going to try this or that to attract those birds." across North America, most songbird populations are in a steady state of decline. if everyone did just a little bit to help the birds out, plant a cpl native trees and shrubs in your yard, put out a little food, maybe we could at least stabilize some of their populations. they're not ornaments or accoutrements to decorate the landscape; they're living, breathing, thinking, rational creatures who are integral parts of the North American ecos. it seems to me the least we can do is give them a chance to survive. they (along with other native wildlife species and indigenous peoples) have suffered mightily for the past 300 years; many of their kind no longer exist, completely wiped out by the hand of man. the choice is yours, to conserve or kill. if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.

The Ulster Hall is a concert hall and grade B1 listed building in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Situated on Bedford Street in Belfast city centre, the hall hosts concerts, classical recitals, craft fairs and political party conferences.
Built in 1859 and opened in 1862, the hall's purpose was to provide the expanding city of Belfast with a multi-purpose venue of sufficient size. It was designed by William J. Barre (also responsible for the Albert Clock) for the Ulster Hall Company.
On its opening night on 12 May 1862, the hall was described by the local press as:
“stand[ing] unexcelled, and all but unrivalled, as an edifice for the production of musical works. ... the hall is a great and unmingled success, and the public, no less than the proprietors, may feel the utmost gratification at a result at once so pleasant and so rare. “(The Belfast News Letter, 1862)
“a music hall fit for the production of any composition, and for the reception of any artist, however eminent”(The Northern Whig, 14 May 1862)
In 1902 the hall was purchased by Belfast City Council (then named the Belfast Corporation) for £13,500 and it has been used as a public hall ever since. During World War II it was used as a dance hall to entertain American troops stationed in Northern Ireland. [Wikipedia ]

Screwtape reveals Nothing:
The Christians describe the Enemy as one ‘without whom Nothing is strong’. And Nothing is very strong: strong enough to steal away a man’s best years not in sweet sins but in a dreary flickering of the mind over it knows not what and knows not why, in the gratification of curiosities so feeble that the man is only half aware of them, in drumming of fingers and kicking of heels, in whistling tunes that he does not like, or in the long, dim labyrinth of reveries that have not even lust or ambition to give them a relish, but which, once chance association has started them, the creature is too weak and fuddled to shake off.
You will say that these are very small sins; and doubtless, like all young tempters, you are anxious to be able to report spectacular wickedness. But do remember, the only thing that matters is the extent to which you separate the man from the Enemy. It does not matter how small the sins are provided that their cumulative effect is to edge the man away from the Light and out into the Nothing. Murder is no better than cards if cards can do the trick. Indeed the safest road to Hell is the gradual one—the gentle slope, soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts.

Here it is...all finished up. I'm in love with the circular quilting! At first I thought the concentric circles were quilted a little too close together but I'm glad I stuck with it as I love the overall effect. I don't know why I've never made one for our house!!! Pillows are awesome...like a mini quilt...instant gratification! Text fabric adds a whole new dimension too!
a few years ago there was a Ted Talk called "Inside the mind of a master procrastinator". In it, the "instant gratification monkey" is presented as the cause of the procrastinator's behavior. It's said for example that the monkey is much more interested in using Google Earth to zoom in on India, 200 feet above the ground, and scrolling from border to border to get a better feel for India than doing important work. I'm reminded of this talk and the monkey every time I zoom in on a place in Google Maps to find seastacks in the water or other interesting places. Is this procrastination or work? I don’t know but the monkey found this beach on Langkawi.
A Wicked Turn

Lusting Gratification
He came over from the fancy oak dresser and finally stood before her.
The lady’s head came up to his chin, her pretty face looking up with innocence, into his.
She was smiling most provocatively, one hand still holding the clasp of her cloak, the other resting upon the shimmery brooch pinned onto the cloak over her right breast.
He, for no real reason, found himself wondering if the broach’s placement meant she was left-handed.
“Okay mister burglar, take me broach, I see your eye’ in it!”
For the first time, but not the last, he almost felt sorry for the show that poor Gaston was missing out on, but glad deep down that he, on the other hand, was not!
He reached down and pried her fingers from the brooch, and as he unpinned the precious jewel, she pushed against him so his fingers brushed against a rather perked, notably heaving breast.
Obligingly he allowed his fingers free reign to fondle her tits!
With a deep sigh, she listlessly allowed both her hands to fall to her sides as she leaned into him, her eyes turned upward gazing lustfully at him with her imploring hazel green eyes.
Huskily she murmured…
“That’s it, not too quickly now…”
He unsteadily managed to unfasten the broach, his fingers a bit encumbered by the game she was playing with her body as she leaned in against him.
Pulling it off, his fingers brushing her soft figure, he let the broach plop into the pouch at his feet…
He then reached up and undid the jewelled clasp of her long green satin cape, exposing is silvery lining… and finally revealing the playful lady’s gown as it lay in full glory down along her enticingly Horney diminutive figure!
As well as revealing her remaining ornaments, in all their exquisite glimmering glory!
Tongue-tied in awe; he watched the cape slither down from her arms.
She looked up into his face, lustful eyes sparkling with delight at his unbridled rapture at seeing her...
Though not for a second realizing quite what it was about her that had captured his total drooling interest!
“Cat ‘ave your tongue there laddie?”
She purred, her hazel eyes opening doe wide, offering no quarter as to their needful meaning.
He just let his eyes travel up and down the now fully exposed figure, quickly taking it all in.
He thought with satisfaction …
“The only thing that had more shine than those doe-like eyes were the diamonds that fell ever so dripping, ever so invitingly, from alluring points along down her scintillating figure!”
Her green satin gown was fitted to show off every delightful curve of her figure.
The bodice was not decorated by rhinestones or anything else that would have taken away one’s eyes from the jewels the wearer was sporting.
Those jewels consisted of a brooch equally as magnificent as the one he had plucked from the brown satin gown found hanging in her closet.
Besides, now could be viewed her long wide necklace dripping down to just above her visibly heaving breasts. The fine piece was set with blazing diamonds, smaller round ones surrounding a steady stream of larger egg-shaped ones that matched the one that hung from her forehead.
She smiled at his amazement.
“Gaston, you almost act as you have never seen these before!”
She scolded, while playfully lifted the necklace, letting it flow charmingly through her emerald green satin gloved fingers.
“Or are you really getting into robbing me, you naughty man!”
She let her other hand playfully pat the side of his mask.
For a second, he thought she was going to pull it up to kiss him, thus spoiling the game.
So, he quickly grabbed her by the wrists under the pretense of studying her rings and bracelets, thus successfully diverting her mind away from the thought.
“Ahh mister burglar, you want my pretties, I can tell, do you desire them more them Moi? One can imagine that you do! Quickly now, put yonder chair to use and ensure sure your victim cannot slip away whilst you wrestle the jewels from her very body!”
Liking this game more and more, he quickly fetched over the chair she was indicating.
Happy to oblige, it would make things far easier at the end he thought to himself with a dash of relief!
The chair was another sturdy Chippendale, Victorian-era straight-backed. Its' position, reflection in the closet door he had left open, would allow them both to watch from all angles. Dear Romeo ‘Gaston’ could not have planned it better!
He sat it down behind her and she started to sit.
He grabbed her by the wrists, keeping her upright. He looked into her wide-open eyes, yet she was the one smirking like the cat eyeing the canary in its cage!
“Good Lord he thought wryly. What did you get yourself into mate?”
she asked him sweetly, honey dripping with each syllable.
“What do you have in mind for your victim?”
He briskly turned her around and began to unzip her gown, feeling its slick material, quite luscious even under the thin gloves he wore.
“Good show Gaston!
she chirped in approval…
“Make your victim feel vulnerable!”
She kicked off the gown and it fell in a pile on the carpet, with the brooch on top, sparkling like a lighthouse on top of an Irish island of shimmering green. She was looking up at him, clad only in a scant mint coloured silken slip that hung delightfully tight against her now quite overly perked figure.
She stooped down giving him a purposely good view of her ‘fin arrière’, tightly outlined by her silken thin slip. She reached down and retrieved her cape, covering the cold oak back of the high-backed chair with it and slipped onto it, too fast for him to react.
“Damn! He had planned to nick that pretty cape with its expensively wrought clasp as well!”
“But he reasoned, all is fair in love, games, and theft!”
He went over and undid the satin sash of her green gown, eyeing the brooch, but not taking it...
“Not yet my pretty!”
He said to himself with promise, as he slipped the sash off.
He turned back around, again she was still smirking like the cat that had now caught the canary, though this time it looked like she had bloody thing in her mouth. He looked down at her gloved hands, the bracelets were there, but judging by her now bare fingers, it was not a canary she had sucked into her mouth.
Without letting on to her mischievous game, he went behind her and she quite helpfully placed her gloved hands behind the chair, her fingers beckoning, trying to get him to notice her missing rings. But he had other ideas for that part of her game…
And it did not involve Gaston snogging ‘er to get at em!
He employed the sash by tying her waist to the chair.
He could feel her shiver deliciously from her head to toe, squirming playfully in the chair.
Then in her throes of passion, she almost slipped off the chair, made slicker by the cape upon which she perched, sitting in an equally slippery slip, and he had to catch her and pull her back, feeling her shiver pleasurably as he held her.
Her dangling earrings were flickering like mad throughout the show, beckoning quite invitingly in his face as he was kneeling, causing him to shiver in much the same manner as her.
He then rose and going to the bed picked up the set of the handcuffs. Going back, he held her eyes steady with his, as she tried to come across as if she was imploring him not to do it, the rings hidden in her mouth preventing her to speak out!
As he approached, she kicked off both of her emerald rhinestones covered spiked heels, playfully missing him.
He smiled at her mischievously, going around and handcuffing her wrists together as she squirmed!
Then he came back around, and bent down in front of her, his hand reaching back and snatching up the rhinestone belt from her leather jacket.
He reached down, and taking an ankle in turn, strapped them both securely together!
She was not going anywhere without dragging the chair with her!
He had kept the keys on the bed, she could reach there to undo herself, but he was planning to be long gone before she would manage to accomplished that feat!
She was now ready, bound up the way she was, to be mercilessly stripped of the rest of her jewels!

School holidays obviously started early for these lads doing some fishing at Deep WaterBend on the Pine River north of Brisbane. There was much hilarity at the size of the enormous catch. As with most young people, instant gratification was the desired fishing outcome here - while we were at Tinchi Tamba Wetlands they moved several times after the result was disappointing. I guess the fish weren't biting and the one that got away was supposedly the prize of the day.

From Wikipedia, "Burlington Arcade is a covered shopping arcade in London, England, United Kingdom. It is 196 yards (179 m) long, parallel to and east of Bond Street from Piccadilly through to Burlington Gardens. It is one of the precursors of the mid-19th-century European shopping gallery and the modern shopping mall. It is near the similar Piccadilly Arcade.
The arcade was built in 1818 to the order of George Cavendish, 1st Earl of Burlington, younger brother of William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire, who had inherited the adjacent Burlington House, on what had been the side garden of the house and was reputedly to prevent passers-by throwing oyster shells and other rubbish over the wall of his home. It was designed by architect Samuel Ware. Burlington Arcade was built "for the sale of jewellery and fancy articles of fashionable demand, for the gratification of the public". However, it was also said to have been built so that the Lord's wife could shop safely amongst other genteel ladies and gentleman away from the busy, dirty, and crime-ridden open streets of London."

“He who seeks truth, shall find beauty. He who seeks beauty, shall find vanity. He who seeks order, shall find gratification. He who seeks gratification, shall find disappointment. He who considers himself a servant of his fellow beings, shall find joy of self expression. He who seeks self expression, shall fall to the pit of arrogance. Arrogance is incompatible with nature. Through nature, the nature of the universe and the nature of man, we shall seek truth. If we seek truth we shall find beauty.”

Note to friends and contacts:
Like a lot of others here, I'm going to be taking some time away to seek some answers about my "relationship" with Flickr. I hope to be able to figure out how to get the same level of inspiration and enjoyment out of it, but with far less time committed to it. Thanks everyone for your interest in, and appreciation of my photography. And thank you too for your friendship. My email address and IM contact info are in my profile if you get the urge to drop me a note or say hi. Take care and happy shooting!
For what it's worth, these last two photos are of Ottawa's "old" city hall, now a federal government building. The striking structure was designed by world-famous architect, Moshe Safdie.

In the previous photograph I described how I would deliver newspapers with black and white photographs of horse races. So what better opportunity did I have to emulate some of these.
Now, let me just say (as one who has shot in the pre-digital age on all types of film), that the experience of photography is very different today. These days anyone can claim to be a photographer because the cameras are so good. You can stick it on P and shoot to your heart's content and not worry about the costs in film and processing. You get immediate feedback on your shot, and instant gratification when you post it on Flickr. But that's not what makes one a photographer.
In the old days, everything was manual. In those days you would ration every shot (unless of course you worked for the newspapers). A wasted shot cost you in the hip pocket, so the general standard of photography was much higher. Oh I know you can do all kinds of tricks these days with Photoshop. But I'm old school enough to value the craft of photography where you had to get the shot right in camera.

Featured in Instant Gratification - Interview for The Idea List Mag
I've been wanting to try (and succeed) at this kind of shot for a long, long time. Usually the opportunity doesn't present itself in a typical campground - too many overhead trees. Usually you have to camp in the backcountry to attempt such a shot. But I was lucky at Glacier National Park - I was able to obtain a site at the edge of the campground, one that was relatively free of crowding trees and open to the sky above.
I made three exposures, total, this being the longest (somewhere between 40 and 60 minutes I think). I was also working against an almost full moon rising off to the left of the image. For each exposure, after tripping the shutter, I'd crawl into the tent, zip it closed and flash my light around the interior for about a minute or two. Then I'd turn the light off, crawl back out, zip the tent up and go sit in the car and read while the exposure finished. I do wish the star trails had shown up a bit more brightly, but I did what I could while working against the moon.
I also tried some star trail shots on my trip back to Oregon, from my campground in the Tetons, so we'll see how those turn out... but it will be quite awhile before that roll is finished and printed (ah, the anticipation of film... sweeter, to me, than the instant gratification of digital).
Taken on either Fuji Velvia 50 or Provia 100 slide film... unfortunately, the slides don't tell me which is which.
www.holyspiritspeaks.org/videos/sovereignty-over-everything/
Introduction
Almighty God says, "How many creatures are there living and reproducing in the vast expanse of the universe, following the law of life over and over, adhering to one constant rule. Those who die take with them the stories of the living, and those who are living repeat the same tragic history of those who have died. And so mankind can’t help but ask itself: Why do we live? And why do we have to die? Who is in command of this world? And who created this mankind? Was mankind really created by Mother Nature? Is mankind really in control of its own fate? … For thousands of years mankind has asked these questions, over and over again. Unfortunately, the more that mankind has become obsessed with these questions, the more of a thirst he has developed for science. Science offers brief gratification and temporary enjoyment of the flesh, but is far from sufficient to free mankind of the solitariness, loneliness, and barely-concealed terror and helplessness deep within his soul. Mankind merely uses scientific knowledge that the naked eye can see and the brain can comprehend to anesthetize his heart. Yet such scientific knowledge cannot stop mankind from exploring mysteries. Mankind does not know who is the Sovereign of all things in the universe, much less does he know the beginning and future of mankind. Mankind merely lives, perforce, amidst this law. None can escape it and none can change it, for among all things and in the heavens there is but One from everlasting to everlasting who holds sovereignty over everything. He is the One who has never been beheld by man, the One whom mankind has never known, in whose existence mankind has never believed, yet He is the One who breathed the breath into mankind’s ancestors and gave life to mankind. He is the One who supplies and nourishes mankind for its existence, and guides mankind up to the present day. Moreover, He and He alone is whom mankind depends on for its survival. He holds sovereignty over all things and rules all living beings beneath the universe. He commands the four seasons, and it is He who calls forth wind, frost, snow, and rain. He gives mankind sunshine and brings the coming of night. It was He who laid out the heavens and earth, providing man with mountains, lakes and rivers and all the living things within them. His deed is everywhere, His power is everywhere, His wisdom is everywhere, and His authority is everywhere. Each of these laws and rules are the embodiment of His deed, and every one of them reveals His wisdom and authority. Who can exempt themselves from His sovereignty? And who can discharge themselves from His designs? All things exist beneath His gaze, and moreover, all things live beneath His sovereignty. His deed and His power leave mankind with no choice but to acknowledge the fact that He really does exist and holds sovereignty over all things. No other thing apart from Him can command the universe, much less can it ceaselessly provide for this mankind. Regardless of whether you are able to recognize the deed of God, and irrespective of whether you believe in the existence of God, there is no doubt that your fate lies within the ordination of God, and there is no doubt that God will always hold sovereignty over all things. His existence and authority are not predicated upon whether or not they can be recognized and comprehended by man. Only He knows man’s past, present and future, and only He can determine the fate of mankind. Regardless of whether you are able to accept this fact, it will not be long before mankind witnesses all of this with his own eyes, and this is the fact that God will soon bring to bear. Mankind lives and dies under the eyes of God. Mankind lives for the management of God, and when his eyes close for the final time, that is also for the very same management."

His cows were his pets. They were not a source of income but rather a source of pleasure to raise and tend to. A gratification that made him feel good about himself.

I was involved in yet another radio debate the other day with that self-appointed guardian of our public morals, Lord Trembath – leader of the so-called Moral Renaissance Movement. Part of our discussion went like this:
LORD TREMBATH
Lady Rebecca, do you not feel that – as a married women – you have a duty to preserve the purity of marriage as an institution?
LADY REBECCA
Of who’s purity do we speak? As I have pointed out to you before, Lord Trembath, in patriarchal societies women are mere objects to be used by men for sexual gratification and reproduction. We are treated as servants - and where is the purity in that?
LORD TREMBATH
But do you not feel any responsibility - as an aristocrat and a Duchess - to act for the greater public good? You are the leading member of a movement which embraces and encourages vice of all kinds!
LADY REBECCA
Let’s face it, Lord Trembath – we are both economic parasites!! Our wealth and privilege derive from the exploitation of others. The difference between us is that my eyes are open, and my actions are intended to bring about a world not of equality – which I believe is impossible – but the complete domination of males by the Superior Sex: Women. Only through the establishment of Female Supremacy will the world achieve lasting happiness and stability… Then, let purity reign!
…and so on and on for a good half hour. You can hear the whole thing on I-Player or somewhere like that, should you wish to. BTW, the outfit I am wearing in the picture is what I wore for the recording session, so I wouldn’t look like too much of a tart! A pity it was only radio… !!!
