In a world where AI feeds our desire for instant gratification as soon as we have a thought or need, it is grounding and humbling to walk in a place that is impervious to the wishes of man. Created by time and the most natural of elements, water and earth, a beauty emerges that is wondrous in its impossibility. Man's interference is not welcome or wanted here. Here patience is respected. The Navajo understood the sacredness of this space, knowing that there are things larger and greater than themselves.
takes too long ;-)

My friend Tom Jesso owned World Camera at 115th & Michigan in Roseland, IL and of course I took my film there for Kodak processing. A look into the South Shore's yard east of Kensington Tower was always worth a shot, and I usually tried to get there around noon since it was well known that the crews liked to go to Pesavento's Restaurant for lunch. On 6/8/1975, I found South Shore GE 802 switching the interchange yard with the Illinois Central Gulf. The big 800 class (never call it a Little Joe!) did some shuffling of cars, then was shut off while the crew went to beans.
I should have followed them for lunch, but I went to the camera shop and my film of this encounter was submitted for processing, and returned the next day: fastest camera to slide mounting ever...and with the instant gratification of digital, a performance never to be repeated!

Exposed for 90 min (1,5 h!) in an attempt to depict the leaf nerves. Some are visible, but man it was hard to get there... The green shade of the leaf is obviously a very good UV-light blocker :-).
Water has no taste, no color, no odor; it cannot be defined, art relished while ever mysterious. Not necessary to life, but rather life itself. It fills us with a gratification that exceeds the delight of the senses.

Found on a summer walk in the park yesterday. I think it got confused by a couple of days with rain and thought it was autumn already :)
Hope your week has started without confusion and thanks very much for visiting the deep south in New Zealand where seasons can vary by the day.
Edit: A bit more from Kahlil Gibran: “The Creation,” from "A Tear and a Smile" written in Arabic in 1914.
The God separated a spirit from Himself and fashioned it into Beauty. He showered upon her all the blessings of gracefulness and kindness. He gave her the cup of happiness and said, "Drink not from this cup unless you forget the past and the future, for happiness is naught but the moment." And He also gave her a cup of sorrow and said, "Drink from this cup and you will understand the meaning of the fleeting instants of the joy of life, for sorrow ever abounds."
And the God bestowed upon her a love that would desert her forever upon her first sigh of earthly satisfaction, and a sweetness that would vanish with her first awareness of flattery.
And He gave her wisdom from heaven to lead to the all-righteous path, and placed in the depth of her heart an eye that sees the unseen, and created in her an affection and goodness toward all things. He dressed her with raiments of hopes spun by the angels of heaven from the sinews of the rainbow. And He cloaked her in the shadow of confusion, which is the dawn of life and light.
Then the God took consuming fire from the furnace of anger, and searing wind from the desert of ignorance, and sharp- cutting sands from the shore of selfishness, and coarse earth from under the feet of ages, and combined them all and fashioned Man. He gave to Man a blind power that rages and drives him into a madness which extinguishes only before gratification of desire, and placed life in him which is the specter of death.
And the god laughed and cried. He felt an overwhelming love and pity for Man, and sheltered him beneath His guidance.

From Sigmund Freud I give you... the id:
According to Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory of personality, the id is the personality component made up of unconscious psychic energy that works to satisfy basic urges, needs, and desires. The id operates based on the pleasure principle, which demands immediate gratification of needs.

Dear Flickr friends, I've decided to stop posting to Flickr for a little while. I've been with Flickr since November 2005 and have been posting almost daily. Lately I have become quite dissatisfied with where I'm going with my photos and I think I have been posting more or less out of habit. I've bought an old Minolta and a Holga so I will try to get back to the basics of photography and get away a bit from the instant gratification of digital. This does not mean I won't be on Flickr I just won't be posting... And thanks everyone for your inspiration and support. It has always meant a lot to me... :)))

Facts about shopping:
- you can do it alone
- if you lose your heart to something that is wrong for you, you can return it
- it's instant gratification
...and yet something you buy may well last for years!
And - it is cheaper than a psychiatrist! OK, mostly :-))!!!!

I hadn't been back to this little spot since I lived in Colorado Springs last year. I had no idea when I made the drive from Castle Rock to Springs over the weekend if there would be much left here but my intuition told me to take a chance and I'm so glad I did. Now before you go thinking I'm in denial about Winter, I'm not! Really. But Colorado weather can be extremely tricky. As the joke around here goes, "If you don't like Colorado weather just wait fifteen minutes because it will change!" :-D The day started in Castle Rock almost hot in the low to mid 70s. We had a fun day walking downtown Castle Rock before we headed to Springs for this spot. Once we got to Springs however the temps dropped down to around 50 and cloudy. I felt much gratification at finding some traces of Autumn left . It is dry and brownish but it is still Autumn and I still love it!;)
Please don't forget to send me a Flickr Inbox message so I can gift someone a canvas! I've got a first winner, and I'd love for there to be a second:) Thank you all again for your support. Have an amazing Monday!!
“If one should ask me what "use" there was in climbing, or attempting to climb the world's highest peak, I would be compelled to answer "none." There is no scientific end to be served; simply the gratification of the impulse of achievement, the indomitable desire to see what lies beyond the heart of man.”

Homelessness on the streets of central London is nothing new. In fact, homelessness is on the rise throughout the whole country every year, especially in the recent years there is sharp increase that has become a common sight. Nevertheless, people carry on with their material gratification but unable to lend a helping hand to a homeless person. Government is able to provide free santisers, gloves and masks as well as spending on advertisement warnings on Covid-19 but conveniently forgotten about the homeless. Who makes the government ? The government servants were placed there by the general public. Millions of people is able to organise and carry out protest for rights, environment and many more causes but unable to help their fellow human beings who needs shelter. Where is our humanity ?

This Eastern Kingbird struggles to subdue a cicada while its fledgling waits patiently, mouth agape. The insect broke free and started to fly away a number of times, but was recaptured.

You might call this "Infantilism", and I agree. Happy colors and simple objects are needed to get you through the dark part of the year here in Sweden.

Nature’s Planetarium. Here’s one where instant gratification and mental blinders almost made me miss the best composition. I had day-scouted this arch from the front-outside and found the Milky Way lined up behind the arch and extended upwards. When I finally climbed up at night the Milky Way was already in position and I spent 3 hours shooting the arch from the outside. When I finally finished I climbed up through the arch only to find that the best composition was from the inside. With one hour before morning twilight I was able to capture this panorama. The space is like a large alcove or cave with the roof eroded away, leaving a large chamber open to the sky, a beautiful place to spend a night. Since it’s frowned upon to reveal locations, I’ll just call this The Temple of the Sky.
The large oval opening at the top of the photo is located directly overhead. Low Level Lightning (LLL) used to light the space. I’ll post the photos from the outside later. 12 mm, 20 sec., f/2.8, ISO 6400. The photo with the figure 🚶was taken from the same location after the panorama and blended in. The orange color at the bottom of the sky is wildfire smoke being illuminated by light pollution com the town of Moab. This is not in a national park. It’s always a challenge to fit the inside of a sphere into a flat rectangle, lol.
The Little Orchid that can...over and over again.
We have a smallish and very unimpressive orchid plant that has lived under one of our windows for close to ten years. Much to our delight and gratification it averages about three blooms a year.
I have repotted it twice and water it when I remember, which is to say very sporadically. However, I do not want to change the routine in any way now as it provides such delight to see it bloom again and the variable timing always catches us by surprise.
This is an extreme close-up of some garden fresh tomatoes, about to go into the soup pot for winter soul-warming goodness. Or... onto the plate with a shower of sea salt and freshly ground pepper for immediate gratification. Or... into the mouth, as is, as soon as the photo was taken. YOU get to guess which one :-)
Food is always a cliché and so are water drops. So I will give myself cliché ka-chings for this. HCS! It's also a decent macro and food photo. Yeah, I think I'll keep this one. Might even post it on Flickr. Stay tuned!
(Sorry, I screwed up. Had been "playing with my food" and inadvertently uploaded a version that seemed too dark, not what I wanted. I replaced it and this is the "edible" version!)

I am passionate about vintage cameras, valuing not only their historical significance but also the exquisite craftsmanship they embody, a striking departure from today's disposable technology. Each camera holds a tale waiting to be uncovered, compelling me to delve into its mysteries. Beyond their function, vintage cameras offer a direct link to the past. As I engage with these mechanical marvels, I cannot help but ponder the stories they hold from bygone eras.Restoring these treasures brings me immense joy, ensuring they continue to capture moments and preserve memories for generations to come. Film photography is a journey of discovery, with every roll of film feeling like a new adventure. In today's world of instant gratification and automation, shooting film serves as my sanctuary, enabling me to fully immerse myself in the creative process. In the midst of our highly automated digital world, shooting film provides me with a respite to engage my mind, hands, and eyes harmoniously with the singular purpose of creating art.

These three images are on display at Jennifer Schwartz Gallery in Atlanta. The opening was on 10/15, with Dave Bias from The Impossible Project speaking at the gallery on 10/14. I was unable to make any of these events, but if you find yourself in the area, it looks like a lovely show. It will be up until 11/26.
There are photos from the opening here.
