A secretive bird, it will fly a short distance when flushed, and then drop back into the grass out of sight. They usually stay out of sight unless they are singing, when they will perch on a weed stalk, shrub, or fence wire and belt out their buzzy song.

Grasshoppers are insects of the order Orthoptera, suborder Caelifera. They are sometimes referred to as short-horned grasshoppers to distinguish them from the katydids (bush crickets) which have much longer antennae. They are typically ground-dwelling insects with powerful hind legs which enable them to escape from threats by leaping vigorously.
Made a new friend this day. This sparrow stayed with us, buzzing in our ears all day.

I was able to photograph it in East Tyrol (Austria) on a mountain meadow, in summer. usually grasshoppers are not that colourful in Austria. I was really happy to discover them in the grass 😊

This species is known for its distinctive chevron markings on the hind legs, which can be seen above.
