The Shift-o-Graph was a volvelle, or wheel chart, designed by the George S. May Company to help with scheduling busy wartime shift workers. The Sewage Works Journal, May 1943, p. 574, for instance, mentioned it in a "Tips and Quips" column:
"Sewage works superintendents in plants of moderate and large size may be interested in obtaining a 'Shift-o-Graph,' a sort of circular slide rule which makes it possible to determine and keep up with a wide variety of rotating work shift schedules. The device, illustrated in Fig. 1 [p. 573 in the journal, same as pictured here], is being distributed free of charge by the George S. May Company, 2600 North Shore Avenue, Chicago, Illinois, as a contribution to the war effort."
See enlarged views of the upper half and lower half of the Shift-o-Graph.

Shooting im the Studio with Softbox upper left and composite in Photoshop. The Graffiti was shot under a bridge. So don't let your model sit in the dirt ;-)

About 15000 photos tagged "sunset" taken within the last year. Compare to the previous photo, which graphs sunrises in the same way.
Their horizontal positions represent the day of the year the photo was taken. January is on the left, December is on the right. The vertical bars are the boundaries between months.
The vertical position represents the time of day the photo was taken, according to the EXIF data. The horizontal lines are hours, with the thick line in the middle representing 12 noon.
The deepest "dip" in the wave formed by the images is the Summer Solstice.
Since there was an increase in the amount of photos during the past year, I am dimming the photos proportional to the number of submissions for that day, to minimize the effect of increasing submissions and to keep the overall brightness uniform. This makes the seasonal change in sunset times more apparent.
Also note a slight echo around 5-7 am, which appears to be folks whose camera clocks are 12 hours off.--

WEEK 49 – Union Avenue OfficeMax, Set III
This endcap claimed to be the home of graphing essentials, but if it was, all of those essentials were out the door already – and took their pricetags with them. Alternatively, perhaps the display was just now being set up… although I’d doubt that, too, since it looks to be part of the gearing up for school promotions, and that surely would have taken place long before October.
Also worth noting, even though they’re clearly trying to pass him off as such, I think that model being used for the endcap topper sign looks significantly older than a high school student (or whatever age they intend for him to be).

These places are public so these photos are too, but just as I tell where they came from, I'd appreciate if you'd say who :)

RailPictures is a popular target for foamer disdain, usually on account of their screening process (which I actually found to be quite helpful, and made me a much better photographer until I stopped submitting my work in 2010), although I prefer to rag on them on account of their near complete lack of innovation, dated design, and running ads for mail-order brides.
In any event, there were some comments on an Ian Hapsias shot that suggested RP was chugging along and more popular than ever... so, I hopped on the WayBack Machine and plugged their self-reported stats into Excel and found that it's not exactly the case - the average photo views per day peaked in late 2011.
I contend that most of this drop can be attributed to Flickr's increased marketshare in the railfan photo-realm, especially with respect to views coming from other rail photographers; Flickr (and a lack of time on my part) are why we abandoned plans to start a competing rail photo gallery website; I don't think there's much to be offered asides from what the existing platforms have now.

The way is up and down, snaking & winding. Same as the graph of our lives. Up and down, swings and round abouts.
