The burning of the old grain elevators in Bird Island, Minnesota, June 12, 2003 began with dense, black smoke from the combustible material set-up by the fire department. It made a dramatic beginning to the holocaust.
Amanda and I roadtripped back to Illinois/Wisconsin for the holidays, so I'll be adding pictures from that trip as I have time.
I'll start with a bit of a melancholic shot. The Nutrien Ag elevator in Cozad, NE is being torn down as the owners decided it had become a liability. This shot was taken early on the morning of December 23rd, 2018. Most of the elevator was gone as the moon set into the soft colors of the western sky. I imagine that by now most of the remaining core that is still standing here has probably succumbed to the demolition crew as well.
This is the second time I've roadtripped home through Nebraska and come across an elevator meeting its end. I also was witness to the early stages of demolition of the old wood elevator in Gothenburg several years back. If I ever come across the Willow Island elevator being torn down, I may break down and weep. It's one of my favorite elevators on the UP in Nebraska and I've used it for several memorable pictures already.
Consolidated Grain and Barge is located at the Ohio River basin, a spur of the old B&O track and busy RT. 50.
Another angle on the lovely elevator of Fusilier and the small ghost town around it.
If you'd like see more images from my trips to the Canadian Prairies, take a look at my Prairies album and if you'd like to see more grain elevators, take a look at my Grain Elevator album, with 3 1/2 years worth of trips to photograph these beautiful structures.
Came across some old color photo pencils the other day while cleaning up my office. This was a boxed set that included a bottle of solution, some cotton applicators. The pencils were used to hand color BW photos back in the day of enlargers and darkrooms. I remember using them a few times. The results were only as good as the artist. But in general, the colors tended to be rather blocky and not nearly as subtle and varied as one would like. Also the color might get overlay saturated in one area and be virtually indistinguishable in others. Colors would often stray beyond the section your were attempting to color and result in a bleed over to an adjoining area. Or you might miss an area leaving odd imperfections in coverage. So not very a practical process, but quaint in its way. This image of an old grain elevator inspired me to recreate the look of my color photo pencils. The entire exercise would not have been conceived had I not decided to do a little spring cleaning!
the now closed Saginaw Bean plant. at one time considered the largest bean elevator in the world
in 1993, the adjacent bean-packaging plant closed and about 50 Saginaw employees lost their jobs. The plant was just north of the landmark building at 1741 N. Niagara, on Saginaw’s West Side.

The gray and gloom of this photo reflect how I feel when I see this old beauty being torn down.
Located between the City Ship Canal and Ganson St. in Buffalo, NY
I made a run up to the SW Michigan area and found this vintage grain elevator alongside the NS mainline in Milan.
In 1980 a fire destroyed the majority of Victoria Elevator Companies Terminal Elevator R. The elevator held more than 1 million bushels of grain with 400,000 destroyed in the fire. 8 of the 10 silos remained relatively undamaged and have stood ever since. At the time, the elevator was the only condominium elevator in the world. The idea was farmers would buy space in the building for storage.
While the grain elevator burned a large crowd from the neighborhood gathered drinking beer and cheering. They had long been sick of the elevator in their neighborhood and the aldermen assured them that construction of a replacement elevator would not be allowed.
The workers on the other hand were not too happy. One telling local news “I hope this makes these damn people happy. They won’t complain no more”.
The remaining 8 silos are currently being demolished.
Grain elevator, Prmate, Saskatchewan.
Saskatchewan, hands down, has the best town names ever.
Thanks to Calakmul and weimheart for taking me here.

These abandoned silos are riveted steel with no concrete support for the second and fourth columns. Located beside a weir dam on Stoner Creek. Famous for blue grass seed.
#tbt time again. This shot dates back to May of 2011. Fog envelopes the large concrete elevator at Bennett, CO.
Zurich, Montana; no longer in use, the old grain elevators sit next to the tracks.
Although Zurich still has a post office and a school, the Hi-Line town, with a population of less than 30 people, is close to being a ghost town.
From the archives: the remnants of a rainbow near the Aberdeen, Sask., grain elevator in June 2017. Tried to get there in time for the full 'bow but Saskatoon traffic held me up.
The train does not stop here as it was hauling coal not corn. I could not tell if the elevator was still being used.
Here Comes the Grain Again

A long exposure photo of an immense grain elevator rising high above the prairie of Kansas. Photo taken during the Nightaxians Journey to the Center of the Country Night Photography Trip. Tim had a fun idea that we would make this our Nightaxians lair, putting it on wheels. It could happen. For now, however, it will remain stationary. The long streaks in the sky? Star trails, showing the apparent movement of stars over 32 minutes.

NS D36 rolls past the community of Milmine, IL, as the sun begins to turn the sky yellow on its way out for the day. Milmine is one of those many small towns along the rail lines of the midwest, made up of a grain elevator and a rather small collection of homes. Places like these are often forgotten, but following trains around tends to bring us to places like this.
Of course, losing the race against the train tends to make it easy to come across these places. Now we have to race both the train and the sun, and man, I am not winning much of either lately.
