Old Grain Elevator- Nashville Road, Vaughn.Once a vital part of this rural community .Now just a memory .
I thought there would be a fence around this modern grain elevator complex. I guess there is no worry that grain will be stollen. Someone would see a truck coming in. It wouldn’t be very lucrative to sneak in for a basket of grain, especially if you are feeding a herd of cattle.

I'll drive 700 miles to photograph an old grain elevator. I found this one 3 miles from my house and I'd never really noticed it before.
It says Purdue on the fence, but I can’t figure out where they keep the chickens. My theory is that the chickens are in the squat round building with the rusty roof. This modern grain elevator drops food directly into the top of the large chicken coop and it flutters to the ground to feed the chickens. The fence is closed when they let the chickens out twice a day for exercise. They won’t fly away because they each have little shock collars on.
This is quite a big complex. I like the vintage, tall wooden grain elevators better, but this looks more efficient.

The elevator,though long shuttered,is the last of its kind along the old canal that was so instrumental in the economic growth of the region.Chicago would not have become the transportation and manufacturing hub without the canal.Today,the old canal is a popular tourism destination...
The old elevator today is a park and listed on the National Register of Historic Places...
(Left) Union Equity Co-Operative Elevator Z, built 1949-1951, 1,000 feet long x 145 feet wide, 15.3 million bushels, or 539 million litres of capacity.
(Right) Union Equity Co-Operative Elevator Y, built 1953-54, 1,000 feet long x 145 feet wide. 16.3 million bushels, or 574 million litres of capacity. It was the then-world's biggest grain elevator when completed.
These are two of the eight grain elevators in Enid, Oklahoma that consist of Enid Terminal Grain Elevator Historic District. The elevators are in operation.

Union Equity Co-Operative Exchange Elevator B was built between 1946 to 1949. It has a capacity of 11 million bushels, or 387 million liters of grain. It stands right east of Union Equity Elevator A, which was built in 1931. This elevator is 1,400 ft. long, 90 ft. wide and 240 ft. tall to the roof. It is one of the eight grain elevators in Enid, Oklahoma that consists of Enid Terminal Grain Elevator Historic District along with the other two grain elevators seen in this image.

An old, long abandoned grain elevator is slowly blending into its surroundings in tiny Baileyville, IL.
The grain elevators of Nanton were a source of fun given times of social distancing. Not a soul in sight, the place was all my own to play with. The sidelight in this shot was strong with a sign in front of me that read, "Enter @ Own Risk".
Traditionally, wooden grain elevators were scattered across the prairie landscape where farmers dropped off their grain crops for shipment, usually by rail to central locations, for distribution to world markets. These iconic structures are rapidly being replaced by steel structures. In some cases, private land holders will have an elevator moved onto their land to keep them from disappearing forever.
This particular grain elevator was originally at or near the town of Kingman east of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

One of the mornings when we were in Illinois dawned quite foggy. I'm ALWAYS happy to be out shooting in the fog. There's an aesthetic that one can get in foggy conditions that just isn't possible any other time.
My wanderings that morning took me over the Cheddar border to Clinton, WI. Clinton has a couple of nice old wood elevators. Since taking this photo, it's become one of my all time favorites from my elevator project. Sometimes the weather gods do smile on you!
