The unofficial mascot girl of Google Maps for fans.

She got a placemark-shaped hat, in road-patterned dress with zoom-slider-shaped zipper, and Google art colored socks.

The illustration is courtesy of MIK Mikako, originally uploaded to donadona's site, the author of GoogleMapsEditor. She would allow Google Maps fans to use this one.

Leave no trace? Here is a snapshot of what I saw on Google Maps. It would seem that someone pasted a newer photo...albeit on the wrong location..Strange to see the city without the people. You can see the traces of the city, after all...

Found this while working on WSPA SOS for DC.

Peabody Place is a large entertainment/shopping center in downtown Memphis, Tennessee, which adjoins the famous old Peabody Hotel (known for it's highly-pampered ducks who are lead on processions through the place every day).

On the roof of Peabody Place is their logo and this message, "Come downtown and play."

I also mentioned this in my blog article about some of my comments on rooftop ads, and the recent interview with me in a USAToday article.

The satellite image used by Google Earth of this remote location in Namibia could have been taken at the same time as I took the inset shot.

Here is where and why.

One of the most remote destinations in all of Africa, Serra Cafema is located on the banks of the Kunene River in the extreme north-west of Namibia, on Angola's southern border and is the most remote fixed safari camp in Southern Africa.

The only way to get there is to fly into the dust strip in the Hartman Valley and get picked up by Land Rover and drive the last few miles to the camp.

I found the Land Rover in GoogleMaps and used Google Earth to get a better angle. The resulting image looked familar and so I went back through my archives and found the photo (inset above) which given the angle looks as if I took it at same location the satellite shows the Land Rover.

The Google Earth generated view from the actual perspective of the Land Rover is a perfect match to my inset photo. However, for this montage I just panned up and back so that the Land Rover is in the shot too.

I lived in this part of New Orleans until I was 13.

Some of the friends I remember from the neighborhood around La Salle Elementary are John, Ann, and Nina Fleetwood, Don Zaterain, Larry McCarthy, Sandy and Tammy Shepard, and Bunty Hunter. (I was in the same grade as most of these.)

About Memorymaps These are extremely popular. To create one, get your neighborhood's satellite photo at maps.google.com (link opens new window). Upload it to Flickr (basic accounts are free), and use Flickr's Add Notes feature for your annotations.
