Google Maps 8-bit for NES was a Google gift for April Fools 2012.
Maps and also Google Street View could be viewed in the iconic pixellated style of the 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment Systems.
I went around and took some "photos" - screen captures of my monitor while viewing iconic and favourite places I have been in the world, and this image is one of them.

I use satellite view a lot to identify mountains and glaciers and found it interesting to find that for Alaska and Yukon Apple Maps usually much better than Google

At first this seems like a mistake, however as it is impossible to make ANY site 100% secure, perhaps Google are being particularly legal about their wording?

This doodle was animated! The apple that you can see over "Unternehmensangebote" at the bottom was actually falling down from the first "o" position in the Google logo.

PS - if you select "take public transit," it remains the default until you change it.....
