I feel quite unmotivated today so this is all I have for you. Light on inspiration but heavy on the processing.

On a positive note; I have enrolled my sister & myself in a ditigal camera course which starts in a few weeks ... so I may finally get to figure out how my camera works! I know there is DPS but I feel I need a bit more hands on to get me going.

I am writing this comment as I go, doing some Google research as well.

These three Shrine Guards are PSO's (Protective Service Officers), there are a lot of them in and around the shrine.

Originally the Shrine was guard by serving Victoria Police officers, they were taken from the police ranks but had to serve in the military, from memory, they had to originally serve in a conflict, police action, or a major war. They wore the uniform of the first world war Australian Light Horse Brigade.

From 1990, the Protective Service Officers took over the roll and they also originally wore the uniform of the first world war, Australian Light Brigade. A guide at the Shrine of Remembrance said that while originally even the PSO's wore the Australian Light Horse uniform, now they arely do, except on special occasions, he even remarked that it was on unusual for the guard in uniform to be so, he figured there must be something special on or some special reason for him wearing the ALHB uniform.

This was supposed to be my last day in London. I decided to go do all of the touristy things that I had been putting off all semester. I went to Buckingham Palace and St James's Park.

This was one of the only times there was snow on the ground in England that semester; no more than two inches fell that day. Those two inches of snow would cause no fewer than four flights of mine to be canceled. I wouldn't leave for the US until December 26th, the day day my student visa expired.

I didn't know any of that at the time. I was just happy to run and play in the snow.

Attended one of the best dharma talk with best pals (sui ling and shinling and meiling)on Freedom from Guilt and Fear by Ajahn Bramh yesterday.

He simply has the charm to walk us out of darkness with a content and happy heart. To view all our obstacles, attachments or unbearable life events in life just like speck of dusk. Leaving all negative attitude and thoughts in life and encouraging each being to learn to practice self love and practicing compassion toward those who needed support and kindness when dealing with uncertainties in life. A constant reminder on AFL code..(A)knowledge, (F)orgive and (L)et Go/ (L)earning. And yes he will be back on 24th and 25th of November 2009. Sui and I will sure be there…Hope to see you there:O)

Acknowledge, Forgive and Let Go (AFL).

For those of you who have difficulty meditating, it's because you haven't learned to let go yet in the meditation. Why can't we let go of simple things like past and future? Why are we so concerned with what someone else did to us or said to us today? The more you think about it, the more stupid it is. You know the old saying, "When someone calls you an idiot, the more times you remember it, the more times they've called you an idiot!" If you let it go immediately, you will never think about it again. They only called you an idiot at most once. It's gone! It's finished. You're free.

Why is it that we imprison ourselves with our past? Why can't we even let that go? Do you really want to be free? Then acknowledge, forgive and let go, what I call in Australia the "AFL Code" [2] - Acknowledge, forgive, and let go of whatever has hurt you, whether it's something that somebody has done or said, or whether it's what life has done. For instance, someone has died in your family and you argue with yourself that they shouldn't have died. Or you've lost your job and you think without stop that that shouldn't have happened. Or simply something has gone wrong and you are obsessed that it's not fair. You can crucify yourself on a cross of your own making for the rest of your life if you want to; but no one is forcing you to. Instead you can acknowledge forgive and learn in the forgiving. The letting go is in the learning. The letting go gives the future a freedom to flow easily, unchained to the past.

I was talking to some people recently about the Cambodian community here in Perth and, being a Buddhist community, I have had much to do with them. Like any traditional Buddhists, when they have a problem they come and speak to the monks. This is what they have done for centuries. The monastery and the monks are the social centre, the religious centre, and the counselling centre of the community. When men have arguments with their wives they come to the monastery.

Once when I was a young monk in Thailand, a man came into the monastery and asked me "Can I stay in the monastery for a few days?". I thought he wanted to meditate, so I said "Oh you want to meditate?" "Oh no", he said "the reason I want to come to the monastery is because I've had an argument with my wife." So he stayed in the monastery. Three or four days later he came up to me and said, "I feel better now, can I go home". What a wise thing that was. Instead of going to the bar and getting drunk, instead of going to his mates and telling them all the rotten things that he thought his wife had done thereby reinforcing his ill will and resentment, he went to stay with a group of monks who didn't say anything about his wife, who were just kind and peaceful. He thought about what he had been doing in that peaceful, supportive environment, and after a while he felt much better. This is what a monastery sometimes is: it's the counselling centre, the refuge, the place where people come to let go of their problems. Isn't that better than lingering on the past, especially when we are angry at something that has happened? When we reinforce the resentment, are we really seeing what's going on? Or are we seeing through the perverted glasses of our anger, looking at the faults in the other person, focussing only on the terrible things they have done to us, never really seeing the full picture?

One of the things I noticed about the Cambodian community was that these were all people who had suffered through the Pol Pot years. I know of a Cambodian man whose wife had been shot by the Khmer Rouge in front of him, for stealing a mango. She was hungry so she took a mango from a tree. One of the Khmer Rouge cadres saw her and, without any trial, he pulled out his gun in front of her husband and shot her dead. When this man was telling me this, I was looking at his face, looking at his bodily movements, and it was amazing to see that there was no anger, there was no resentment, there was not even grief there. There was a peaceful acceptance about what had happened. It shouldn't have happened but it did.

Letting go of the past is so we can enjoy the present, so the future can be free. Why is it that we always carry around the past? Attachment to the past is not a theory, it is an attitude. We can say, "Oh I'm not attached". Or we can say, "I'm so detached I'm not even attached to detachment," which is very clever, and sounds very good, but is a lot of old rubbish. You know if you're attached if you can't let go of those important things that cause you to suffer, that stop you being free. Attachment is a ball and chain, which you tie around your own legs. No one else ties it around you. You've got the key to free yourselves, but you don't use it. Why do we limit ourselves so and why can't we let go of the future, all the concerns and the worries? Do you worry about what's going to happen next, tomorrow, next week, next year? Why do you do that? How many times have you worried about some exam or some test, or a visit to the Doctors, or a visit to the Dentist? You can worry yourself sick and when you get ready to go to the dentist you find they have cancelled your appointment, and you didn't have to go anyway!

Things never work out as you expect them to. Haven't we learnt yet that the future is so uncertain that it doesn't bear worrying about? We never know what's going to happen next. When we let go of the past and the future, isn't that being on the path to deep meditation? Aren't we actually learning about how to be at peace, how to be free, how to be content.

These are indications of what enlightenment means. It means seeing that many of our attachments are based on sheer stupidity. We just don't need this. As we develop this meditation deeper, we let go more and more. The more we let go the more happiness and peace it gives us. This is why the Buddha called this whole path of Buddhism a gradual training. It's the path that leads one on, one step at a time, and at every step you get a prize. That's why it's a very delightful path and the prizes get more delightful and more valuable the further you go. But even on the first step you get a prize.

I still remember the first time I meditated. I remember the room. It was at Cambridge University, in the Wordsworth Room at Kings College. I'd never done any meditation before, so I just sat down there for five or ten minutes with a few of my mates. It was only ten minutes but I thought "Oh that was nice", I still remember that feeling. There was something that was resonating inside of me, telling me that this was a path which was leading somewhere wonderful. I'd discussed over coffee and over beer with my friends all types of philosophy, but the "discussions" had always ended in arguments and they never made me happier. Even the great professors at the university, who you get to know very well, didn't seem happy. That was one of the reasons why I didn't continue an academic career. They were brilliant in their field but in other ways they were as stupid as ordinary people. They would have arguments, worry and stress just like everyone else. And that really struck me. Why in such a famous university, where people are so intelligent, are they not happy? What's the point of being clever if it doesn't give you happiness? I mean real happiness, real contentment, and real peace.

Le Géant de Sel, statue monumentale installée quelques jours devant la cathédrale de Toulouse, a-t-il été prié d’aller faire ses acrobaties ailleurs ? Cette œuvre en poudre d’acier et polyester, des sculpteurs espagnols Coderch et Malavia, a débarqué le 18 novembre place Saint-Etienne, après avoir voyagé en Suède, en Allemagne ou encore en Italie. Elle représente – sur 2 mètres de haut et trois de large – un danseur japonais de buto, en action. Il est penché en arrière, jambes écartées et un poil plus vêtu que les angelots de la fontaine voisine. Mais certains riverains ont semble-t-il été « importunés » par sa présence devant un site religieux.

« Deux heures après [son installation], la mairie nous a appelés pour nous dire que ça n’allait pas », indique Edouard Guiounet, collaborateur de la galerie Alain Daudet, qui expose actuellement les œuvres de Joan Coderch et Javier Malavia.

Et, ce jeudi, le Géant de Sel a plié bagage pour rejoindre l’Esplanade François-Mitterrand, près de la place Wilson. Mais Jonnhy Dunal, l’élu en charge du dossier, réfute que ce déménagement soit lié à des plaintes des riverains. Il a assuré à l’AFP qu’il était prévu dès le départ que la sculpture soit transférée de la place Saint-Etienne à sa nouvelle esplanade, « lieu de passage, neutre ». Selon lui, l’exposition devant la cathédrale devait juste être transitoire, « le temps que l’esplanade soit disponible ».

According to him, the exhibition in front of the cathedral should just be transitory, "while the esplanade is available."

You don't have to take giant strides to admire it until the end of the year, it's relatively close.

impressive turnout, i'd estimate low 4 figures. anyway here are the photo

Doobie left early this morning to go to Washington DC for work for a couple of days. We were at the airport in San Francisco ridiculously early, and then I tried to go do my deliveries in the city, but Mojo was dark when I went by.

Turns out someone was there, but I didn't find that out until I was back across the bridge in Oakland. And of course they were out of coffee. I raced back and got THE parking spot, so I'm going to hang out for bit and enjoy a cup of coffee with Remy. We had a few pounds left over from a roast of the Nic CoE, so I brought it down for them to use. Perhaps not the best medium for this coffee, but the flavors are still there, if a bit subdued.

The sun is shining in San Francisco and I'm drinking good coffee. Feeling blessed.

It's the Monday after Christmas but it's still not too late to post a holiday themed shot right? After trying this shot from a different angle before and getting mixed results I decided I wanted to try it again on my next visit. Here is my original shot ( flic.kr/p/aVtFX2 ). This one I think turned out much better than the previous one and I'm much happier. I hope everyone had a great Christmas and got everything they wanted, I know I'm super happy to have gotten an Ultra Wide Angle Lens and I can't wait to go do some shooting with it!

As for the shot this was a fusion of 3 exposures in Photomatix and then run through CS5 for some simple fixes. As always comments and constructive criticism are welcome and appreciated! :)

Alarm w Małopolsce. Dwukrotnie przez 3 minuty nadawane były sygnały dźwiękowe – pierwszy: ostrzegający o zagrożeniu, drugi: o jego odwołaniu.

Zagrożenie związane było z naruszeniem przestrzeni powietrznej przez samolot, który został uprowadzony przez terrorystów.

Na szczęście – choć sygnały były nadawane rzeczywiście, to zdarzenie wywołane zostało na potrzeby ćwiczeń odbywających się pod kryptonimem RENEGADE.

To ogólnopolskie ćwiczenia prowadzone z wykorzystaniem systemów alarmowania ludności, odbywające się już od wielu lat, po to, by sprawdzićstopień przygotowania służb odpowiadających za bezpieczeństwo i podmiotów cywilnych do prowadzenia działań związanych z prowadzeniem akcji poszukiwawczo-ratowniczych oraz przeciwdziałania atakom terrorystycznym na terytorium Polski.

Częścią ćwiczeń jest prowadzona w wielu regionach Polski próba systemu powszechnego alarmowania i ostrzegania ludności przed zagrożeniami.

Zakres ćwiczenia obejmuje prowadzenie akcji w różnych warunkach i o różnej skali zagrożenia. Tegoroczne ćwiczenia prowadzone w Małopolsce zakładały reagowanie w sytuacji uprowadzenia cywilnego statku powietrznego, który narusza przestrzeń powietrzną. Celem działania służb było sprawne dotarcie do miejsca zdarzenia i doprowadzenie (przy pomocy dwóch wojskowych śmigłowców) do przymusowego lądowania uprowadzonego przez terrorystów samolotu a następnie obezwładnienie i zatrzymanie przez policyjnych antyterrorystów sprawców uprowadzenia. Rolą strażaków było natomiast zneutralizowanie szkodliwych substancji podłożonych przez terrorystów

Gotowość do reagowania ćwiczyły różne podmioty odpowiedzialne za bezpieczeństwo państwa. Także Policja – na miejscu akcji byli policjanci Samodzielnego Pododdziału Antyterrorystycznego Policji, funkcjonariusze Komendy Miejskiej Policji w Nowym Sączu oraz Komendy Wojewódzkiej Policji w Krakowie

Mały samolot cywilny typu Cesna 172 z niezidentyfikowanymi osobami na pokładzie naruszył rejon ograniczonego ruchu lotniczego nad obszarem woj. małopolskiego.

Dyżurny Stanowiska Kierowania Komendy Wojewódzkiej Policji w Krakowie otrzymał informacje, że nad obszarem województwa małopolskiego zlokalizowany został podejrzany samolot z niezidentyfikowanymi osobami na pokładzie, który naruszył rejon ograniczeń ruchu lotniczego. W tym przypadku występowało duże prawdopodobieństwo, że na pokładzie znajdują się podejrzane osoby oraz ładunki wybuchowe.

Samolot zostaje sprawnie przechwycony przez dwa wojskowe śmigłowce Sokół W-3, które zmuszają go do lądowania na lotnisku Aeroklubu Podhalańskiego w Łososinie Dolnej. W celu zabezpieczenia lotniska na miejsce natychmiast skierowane zostają patrole interwencyjne z Komendy Miejskiej Policji w Nowym Sączu, funkcjonariusze z Samodzielnego Pododdziału Antyterrorystycznego Policji w Krakowie w tym, policjanci Zespołu Minersko – Pirotechnicznego. Policjanci na miejsce docierają bardzo szybko, sprawnie zabezpieczają teren i ustawiają blokady na drodze krajowej k-75. W pełni przygotowani do działania oczekują na zakończenie akcji wojskowych śmigłowców, które fachowo sprowadzają uprowadzony samolot na ziemię.

Po wylądowaniu do działania przystępuje Samodzielny Pododdział Antyterrorystyczny Policji z Krakowa, który zatrzymuje czterech mężczyzn, którzy lecieli tym samolotem. Następnie policjanci z Zespołu Minersko Pirotechnicznego przy użyciu specjalistycznego sprzętu zabezpieczają ładunek wybuchowy znajdujący się na pokładzie. Do akcji wkraczają także strażacy z Państwowej Straży Pożarnej z Nowego Sącza, którzy neutralizują substancje chemiczną znajdującą się na pokładzie zmuszonego do lądowania samolotu .

W obliczu wyzwania jakim są zbliżające się Światowe Dniami Młodzieży, przeprowadzone ćwiczenia nabierają szczególnej wartości. Priorytetem dla Policji i pozostałych służb podczas tego szczególnego okresu jest zapewnienie zarówno pielgrzymom jak i okolicznym mieszkańcom bezpieczeństwa i reagowanie na każde potencjalne zagrożenie. Tym razem służby poprawiały skuteczność działania w razie wystąpienia zagrożenia potencjalnym zamachem terrorystycznym przy wykorzystaniu małego samolotu cywilnego.

W ćwiczeniach wzięło udział ponad 50 policjantów KWP w Krakowie i KMP w Nowym Sączu, którzy współpracowali z przedstawicielami Dowództwa Operacyjnego Rodzajów Sił Zbrojnych – Szefostwa Obrony Powietrznej oraz strażakami Komendy Miejskiej Państwowej Straży Pożarnej w Nowym Sączu.

Działania zostały zainicjowane w ramach zapewnienia bezpieczeństwa publicznego na terenie Małopolski w sytuacji wystąpienia aktów terroryzmu, a także doskonalenia umiejętności organizacji działań oraz efektywnego współdziałania wszystkich służb.

Hey, everybody, as I write this, today is June 12, 2010: the 1st birthday of the digital TV transition (really the full-power analog free air station SHUTOFF) in the U.S.A.! Remember that? ;-)

I took that very seriously as another one of the big milestones in television broadcast history, and it was such an interesting one to me that I recorded the analog shut-offs, and any digital start-ups for those stations that weren't already up on digital until then. So a year later, I decided to celebrate it with this cake!

OHHH, you know what? These little round cakes were on sale just now, but I just thought of something: I should buy a rectangle cake and have the whole thing made up to look like a TV! YEAH, let me go do that! (Those bigger rectangle ones are a lot more expensive, though, for some reason.)

Okay, deal! So I'll see ya back here a little while later, when I get my next bit of money, with the rectangle cake that'll look like a TV by itself!

The girl decorating the cake probably thought this was the most unusual cake decoration she's ever heard of!

:-D (But maybe not, I dunno--I didn't think of asking her, but hey, maybe I'll have to ask her next time I see her around there.)

Too bad she didn't fit the word "transition" in there quite right. Should I have her redo it? Well, naw... it's still... okay. I had her redo enough other stuff already as it is--the shape of the TV, etc. But it still looks pretty good, doesn't it? Oh, and can you see the little sprinkles I had her put on the TV there, that make it look like an analog TV with no antenna signal coming to it anymore? Cool, huh? :-D

All thinking - no doing! Not my favorite kind of day. I'm better just doing something and then, if I don't like it, I can put what I've done in the This & That Box. That said, I'm going to go do something :) Occasional days like this are part of my piecing process.

August 15

Yesterday we went for a snooze at six, and failed to wake up until nealry 11, meaning too late to do anything really, so we went back to bed.

All would have been well if the car hadin’t got bored and made the alarm go off twice. No idea what was wrong, so in the end we had to leave the car unlocked.

All was well this morning when we got up at six. Got up, but had been laying awake for at least two hours. But all was well, just now we could get up and go do stuff again. And as before, do the really popular stuff when the park is either empty or asleep, which is why we were heading for the Canyon and two sets of falls before seven, and just as the sun was rising.

As was the mist.

Mere photographs could not do the scenes justice, the morning light on the mist as it rolled down from the mountain tops, all tinged in pink. We do stop a couple of times for shots, but mostly just enjoy being some of the few people up and around at the early hour, lucky enough to see it.

We arrive at Canyon Village, and fill up the car, as it was reminding us it had only 45 miles of fuel left, and Yellowstone wasn’t the best of places to run out of fuel. However, I can say I am one of the few people to have locked the keys to his hire car, in the hire car, on the top of a mountain. You really could not make this up.

So with the car refuelled, we drive to the lower falls, and first of all go to the overlook, and with the mist wrapped round the fir trees on the edge of the gorge mising in with the spray from the waterfall, and again with the golden light, it was magical.

There was a train: three eights of a mile long, but dropping 660 feet. I knew the shots would be worth it, so we start to totter down. And down, and down. Zig zagging down the side of the gorge, with the roar of the falls getting ever louder.

With every step down, we would have to climb back up, and at over 7,000 feet, it was going to be interesting.

Once down at the bottow, there was a viewing platform right over the falls, allowing you to look down from the edge of the catteract. It was magical, and with just three young guys from Boston with us, we had it all to ourselves.

Of course, then came the walk back up, stopping every turn or two, but recovery seemed to get quicker and easier, and in ten minutes or so, we were at the top.

We have breakfast of saladf and nectarines, I kid you not, before the short drive to the upper falls, where there was a less steep and much shorter set of steps to the viewing platform, made all the more magical by the mist that had risen. I snap it, and the mist wreathed trees on the far bank, then walk up where there was a small conference on what to do next.

In our preparations, we had left two days without accommodation booked, to allow us some flexibility, however, those two days were on Friday and Saturday, and all rooms in and around Yellowstone might be booked.

We drive round to Cooke City, Montana, where we had both thought the main street looked fun and nice to stay at. Once there was asked at the tourist information if they could help in finding a room, but we were told we would have to visit each and every motel and bar, casino to ask if they had rooms.

Only one did, but it didn’t really meet our standards these days, so we went back to the tourist information to use their free wifi, and after consulting a map, chose a town in southern Montana, did a search for rooms and came up with a condo with suits, and free wifi which should mean being online a little. It was all booked, so worries over, and being midday, we go over to a place opposite for lunch, our first meal in 22 hours, and have burgers. It was either that or steak.

Not the best burgers of fries in the world, but good enough to these hungry bunnies, we ate outside, the only ones to do so, but soaking up the rays, now that the sun had broken through.

On our way back to the park we see a cabin selling ice cream, so call in, and were given a waffle cone each with five scopps of creamy goodness, and these were just the singles at 3 bucks fifty each! Jools could not finish hers, but I wasn’t going to let huckleberry ice cream go to waste. I eat all mine, all except for the drips down my t shirt.

On the waay back to the cabin, we stop many times to take in the views, or to look for wildlife. A friendly chap showed me where some mountain goats could be seen about a mile away, but also gave me the heads up on an Osprey’s nest near to the road further on.

At an overlook of a shallow river, Jools and I spend a fine half hou chasing butterflies, American Painted Ladies and some kind of Fitillary. All wonderful, and some photographed.

A few miles on, we see the Osprey’s nest and stop, next to the guy who told me about it. We watch to juveniles stretching and flapping their wings, and I rattle off probably 50 shots.

We move on and finally come to a place where a herd of Bison where near to the road, so we stop and I snap many of the animals, some rolling around in a dust bath. Just fabulous.

Back in Mamoth, we visit the upper terraces of the falls near to the cabin, but it is a joyless experience because of the numbers of people, but then still got some shots. But we can return in the eaving or early tomorrow,

We had burgers for lunch, again, so in the evebing, in the hope of improving our diet, we go to the resoty restauratn, in the hope of vegetables, in for not other reason. We hadin’t booked a table, so had to wait 40 minutes, so retired to the bar, and where I was recommonded a pint of Moose Drihhle, a dark beer I was told. Turned out to have great depth of falvour, and it was a shame when that came to an end, but no worry as our table was ready, so we celebrated by odering a bottle of wine. We ordered bluse, but red came, but what the heck.

I had fillet of bison, showing they just don’t look good, the taste it too, it was accompanied by some mashed taters, and boccolini. Or, broccoli that had been on a diet. All good, as was the wine, and we may return to sample the huckleberry margerita.

We walked back under a clear sjy with the cresent waning moon high overhead. We were pooped, and it was cold, just above freezing, so we took to our beds.

Went to do a load of laundry today and on my way back upstairs to my apartment I could not find my keys. I ALWAYS lock my door (and bring my keys with me) when I go do laundry. Didn't I feel silly when I got to my door.

Back in October a friend of mine called me up right before the full moon and told me he wanted to go do some 4wheeling down in the Mojave. I could not pass up a free ride to the Mojave, and some 4wheeling too, that would be crazy! We got rained on off and on all day and I was unsure if the weather man was right about it clearing up in the evening. The clouds broke for a bit and I was able to get some work done. To thank him for bringing me along and staying out way later then planned I took a few shots of his Jeep and printed him a few 12x18’s.

...this is the no-knead dough after rising for 16 hours. It could probably be baked now, but I have to go do my volunteer gig, so it'll go for the full 20 hours. The surface has bubbles and the dough has more than doubled so at least I know my yeast is working.

The little girl who I call LG for short is by far the most adventurous, co-ordinated and cheekiest. I swear she is hyper, not in an annoying way but at night she runs around the house at 100 miles an hour and is always ready to go do something, even when sleeping she will open one eye if I go close.

She loves plastic bags, foil rolled up into a ball and put into a basket so she can retrieve and climbing which is not just reserved for tree's or scratching pole...she climbs me, the lounge, the curtains...anything.

This is a shot of me wielding a light-painted flamethrower. For this shot, I put the camera on a timer, grabbed a camp chair and ran out to be in the shot. My buddy Joe was the light painter for this one and man, is he good at it!

Basically, one night after playing a pretty competitive game of Settlers of Catan, I saw that it was a near-full moon, so I wanted to go down to the lake to take some photos since a long exposure with a full moon can make a landscape shot look like it was taken in daylight plus the stars. I told the guys that I was going to go do that and Joe decided to come with me, which made Kyle and Theo decide to come too. Shortly after arriving at the end of the dock, I had an idea. We all had headlamps, I had a camera and we also had hours of full moon light left....... So I decided that light painting would be pretty awesome. Also, that full moon light would allow us to see detail such as what was on our shirts, facial features and pretty much everything you would see in the daylight and we wouldn't have to shine a flashlight on the person in the photo. So we started by doing epic light-saber battles and things like that. Then we tried a campfire scene, which got me thinking about the possibilities with a camp chair.... A few minutes later, we all had flame throwers and other weapons of mass destruction in our hands. :) So two nights in a row, we were out from 10 until around 1 in the morning light painting to our hearts content... and until our creativity ran out. :)
