We have been in no danger from the wildfires, and we have not been affected by any of the Public Safety Power Shutoffs. My sympathy and hope is with all the people who have lost their homes or livelihoods and with those who have been evacuated and have no place to go.

This bull, despite assuming a roaring pose, made no sound. He appeared in the clearing with a doe in the afternoon. It looked as if, on the one hand, instinct was forcing him to roar, but on the other, experience and knowledge advised not to reveal his location, especially to "animal lovers" who might gladly shoot him. Later I learned from one of the locals that apparently these deer are like that. In the strict reserve, where hunting is prohibited, they roar around the clock, outside of it only after sunset. I have not verified this personally, but this bull actually started roaring loudly only just after sunset.

Ten byk, pomimo że przyjął pozę jak do ryczenia nie wydawał z siebie żadnego dźwięku. Pojawił się na polanie razem z łanią po południu. Wyglądało to tak jakby, z jednej strony instynkt zmuszał go do ryczenia, ale z drugiej doświadczenie i wiedza zalecały aby nie zdradzać swojego położenia, szczególnie "miłośnikom zwierząt", którzy mogliby go chętnie odstrzelić. Później dowiedziałem się od jednego z miejscowych, że ponoć te jelenie takie właśnie są. Na terenie ścisłego rezerwatu, gdzie polowania są zabronione, ryczą przez całą dobę, poza nim tylko po zachodzie słońca. Nie zweryfikowałem tego osobiście, ale ten byk zaczął ryczeć głośno faktycznie dopiero tuż po zachodzie słońca.
I had four days off for Fall Break from my studies at school, so I decided to make the drive home. While visiting family and friends was on my list, I also had a couple things I wanted to get done on the photography side of things. Nate and I were discussing taking Friday to go do some goobing, and M&M was put on the table. This little terminal railroad operation by the ELS is always a priority of mine, with their rare and ecclectic roster of switch engines, and a kickass crew, it can't be beat. So, I shot Ryan a message and we were on our way to M&M.
We shot most of their shift, only dipping out for a little bit to shoot A450 coming across this same bridge. Here, They're on the CN heading into Michigan to drop cars off at their yard, before heading back over the river to the interchange.
From a very long way back in the archives, a pair of scallop dredgers from St Helens, steaming north at dawn across the Bay of Fires on Tasmania's east coast. Circa 1984.
Not sure of the nearby vessel but the one to sunward is the FV Investigator.
The scallop industry was a boom and bust phenomenon of the mid 80's. Vast beds of Commercial Scallops were found in and around Bass Strait and its many islands then subsequently plundered. I made a lot of money for some seriously mind-numbing work. The main beds were between 6 to 14 hours steaming from St Helens, from Banks Strait, Babel Island (east of Flinders Island) and well north again of Flinders. We'd steam for say 10 hours, work for 30-40 hours and steam home. We'd have a sleep after unloading then go do it again...
I had a Nikon F2A with 35-70/3.5 most of the time back then and this is shot with Kodacolor 200 colour negative film. Negative has been rephotographed with the Nikon Z6 and post-worked in PS. I took a lot of very dumb pictures back then but a few will begin to surface when I've got a better 'scanning' method. The observant will note some curious OOF areas from a distorted negative that should actually be perfectly sharp!

The passionflower seen on the fence of the house, where we lived in Zaostrog (Croatia) :) :)
Bluecrown passionflower (Passiflora caerulea) is a species of flowering plant native to South America (Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay and Brazil). It is a vigorous, deciduous or semi-evergreen tendril vine growing to 10 m (33 ft) or more. The ovoid orange fruit, growing to 6 cm (2 in), is edible but bland. Bluecrown passionflower is widely cultivated as a wall-climber or as groundcover. In milder temperate areas it can be grown outside, and can become invasive, the twining shoots constantly appearing unless eradicated. Though the fruit is edible, it is rather insipid when eaten raw. It can substitute for blackberries. A tea can be made of the flower which is said to alleviate stress and anxiety. The flower of the passion fruit is the national flower of Paraguay. The intricate structure of the flower has generated Christian symbolism, each part representing a different part of the Passion of Christ.

This morning I heard PORU get a form D to meet RUPO at New Gloucester, after the latter completed work at Danville. I gave it a little more than an hour then headed up to find 512 rolling in to do some switching.... 'some' being basically every other car and shops.
As evident the soup of Danville was going to be sorted one car at a time, and RUPO's head end patiently waiting with their rear cut off blocking the main, I figured no time like the present to go do something better.
RUPO 334 looks onto a relatively clean SLR 3008 working 512 at Danville Jct.
Mike & I drove 3 hours to go see the St. Joseph North Pier Lighthouse as we heard it was frozen over. It was well worth the extreme cold and the drive. If you get the chance to go see it while it's frozen, I'd run (drive) and go do it!

For the last part of the LoweproUK competition...Theme - Accessibility. How do I see it? We have access to pretty much everything here. Supermarkets on every corner, too much food in fridges, the internet plugged into so many of our houses and on our phones..we have access to the world at our fingertips while people in third world countries might think something like flickr is the devil's work with so many images and faces staring back at them. For them, there is no access..not to the internet, electricity, fresh running water. Stop. Do not pass go. Do not know whether you will get a meal tomorrow while we think nothing of wasting 3.6tonnes of food a year that we didnt really need in the first place.
Stop. Think. Is accessibility everything? Or do we have too much.

I move on Thursday. Nearly everything I own is packed away in boxes and ready to go. I'm just doing a final big clean so it's all nice for the new people. The cats are acting wierd, it must be strange for them, they don't know what's going on.

Generally speaking, male box turtles have red eyes.
The box turtle commonly lives over twenty years, with verified cases of lifespans exceeding 40 to 50 years. There have been unverified cases of box turtles living for a hundred years and more.
NEVER DISTURB, PICK UP , OR MOVE A BOX TURTLE UNLESS IT HAS A VISIBLE INJURY OR IS IN IMMINENT DANGER. If you find a turtle in the road, move it to the other side in the direction it was going. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO RELOCATE IT.
Four sets of four, actually, but I was never able to capture all of them lit in the same shot, unless I made the exposure really long. That made everything washed-out and blurry. I guess I coulda used a tripod and red filter or a neutral density filter, but that seemed a bit obsessive (i.e. I'll probably go do it some day).

What emotion awakens in you, looking at this silently sleeping house? Is it bewilderment, appreciation, aesthetic pleasure, sadness, anger or fear even? This weekend I decided to go do something I hadn't done in over 2 years, but enjoyed a lot in the years before that. I took out my Playstation 3 from the attic and started playing some games again. Felt like going back in time. So, this evening I was at it again when I looked out of the window to see gorgeous evening light hitting the blossoming trees of the orchard. It was like nature was calling me outside into the wild, and luckily I couldn't resist its call. I took my 500mm and went for a stroll through the garden, hoping to find the Little Owl that had made the old bird house home again after an absence of over 5 years. And there it was, sitting on the branch that I put underneath the bird house 5 years ago. You could say this shot was 5 years in the making...

Brejlovec in an interesting livery is no longer stationed at the Trutnov depot. It was moved to Prague, where it serves the weekend trains there.

3 avis -- all me with a camera-view-saving hud
Just so you know I am not blogging for anyone so it's not an ad but I love this hud because it let me put myself as a frame girl, fish and monkey in the same place with the same camera view without using a green screen. I found the Timeless Photo hud at the Focus Photography Fair which had some cool things just for photographers like this hud and eeps and stuff.
All three avatars are me and I photographed myself in the SL Domino Photo Studio box at the Photo Fair with Sandy Burgess' Timeless Hud's Photography Hud. You can save your camera view on the hud which allowed me to pop home to change avis and then pop back to arrange my "new model" self on the set, then click the button and I took the same photograph with the same view. I even finished the last shot the next day as I had to go do something so came back to SL later.
I love that the hud saved my camera view. I layered the 3 photographs in photoshop and then just erased wherever my avatar was.
I learned about the hud at a "photo storytelling" class given by Wren Carling at the Photo Fair.

I thought it was a photo submission deadline but it is actually the voting on the photos deadline so I was too late to get any votes as I submitted the day of the deadline. So no one viewed my image in their contest.
However, I was happy because it gave me an excuse to try out the Timeless Photography hud and I found it easy to use and I love, love, love it. I love being able to go to the sim as different "people" and creating a "group" shot. I hadn't taken an SL photo in a long time (April 2021! Can you believe it?) so this was fun and I got to pull out some of the stranger avatars I've picked up in my journeys in SL.
It is worth noting if Focus does voting contests at their fairs and you want to join the smaller 1000L voting contests, make sure your pictures are submitted before the previous contest ends. They seem to put up the photos to be voted on after the deadline of the previous contest and end the voting on the stated deadline of the contest. This is not true of their big 100,000L photo contest as that seems to be the deadline for photo submissions.

Another shot from a recent visit to Station Cove Falls in upstate SC. My buddy, Woody, got this composition first and I liked it and decided to try one too.
It turned out to be a bit more difficult than I expected due to the lighting conditions. I first used three stacked images to attempt to get a better depth of field. I then blended in a 15 sec exposure of the waterfall as it looked better given the somewhat light flow of the waterfall. Then I needed to do quite a bit of dodging and burning to pull out the best of the image.
The hike to the falls is about a mile and is easy without much change in elevation. But if you go, do it after some good rains. Otherwise, you might find a trickle of water.

So today.. was really tiring.
I woke up at 7 to go do this beach cleanup thing with my friends.
We stayed till 1. Then my friend dropped me home and my other friend
came and picked me up..so we can go do a quick photo shoot.... before we go play rugby.
Then we rushed back home so I can get to work at 5.
xD
= 11 hours in the sun
Everyone of my colleagues was like
"You got burnt."
"Your cheeks are really red."
Yeahhhhh... I'm tired. :]
BTW this isn't me. This is my friend Gen... we took some pictures after the beach cleanup.
Peggy lost her son two weeks ago -- he had struggled to find work after being let go do to the recession and he struggled with life as well. I cannot imagine losing a child, even a grown one. If a photo can be a poem this one is dedicated to Peggy and her son.

Eva: Nope. Not true.
Julia: It totally is true. I'm asking you to go swimming with me, and you're just sitting there looking at Dad with a super weird expression on your face.
Eva: See? You were wrong. I am doing something.
Julia: Staring at Dad with a really weird expression on your face is doing something?
Eva: Darn tootin' it is. And when I'm done that, I'll be more than happy to dock jump, swim and smell for water fowl with you.
Julia: Um, I don't plan on smelling the surface of the lake for birds with you.
Eva: And you also didn't plan on staring at Dave for no apparent reason. Yet here we are. So, ten more seconds of staring and we can get back to the water!

Eva is an odd little dog. And this is just one example of that. She literally did stop playing on the dock and in the water with Julia to sit on the dock and stare at me. Maybe she was mugging for a photo, or maybe she was just being odd. Either way this staring intermission lasted much longer than any of us humans expected. And yes, she still swims with a long lead on as the bird smelling thing can push her into a scent trance making her completely forget to swim back to shore when called.
