First Bike Ride on Cape Cod!

I went for a beautiful ride today! First of all, I would like to establish that the roads here are a narrow, and very twisty. There isn't a shoulder, its a white line, 2 inches then grass. However, the lanes arn't Chicago skinny - but its not clear drivers realize that. Regardless, it might make sense to you that Cape Cod, and especially the town from which the Ferry to Martha's Vineyard (Woods Hole) is stationed might be an insanely scary place to ride a bike on the narrow twisty wooded roads- it is. Fortunately, there is a very legit bike path that goes north, away from the tourist insanity.

I took this bike path a few miles north then, thanks to a map my ride search, did a 25 mile is loop. Its not flat here, but its not real hills. There are lots of 3-6% grades for half miles at a time, then there are some rollers. Its really quite interesting. Additionally, the roads arn't labeled. The main road you are on is almost never labeled, until it comes to a busier road, in which case the busier road isn't labeled. Basically, any intersection, the busy road isn't labeled. This is really fun to deal with on really twisty ever changing roads. I had written out the turns for my ride, the loop out was like 20 turns, the way back, like 5. I missed turns, got lost etc about 4 times. I got a new phone the other day - the sales guy made a big deal about it having turn by turn directions... well turns out that also means my phone will get a pretty bad gps based map of where I am - its not very helpful, but the roads are labeled, so as long as I know when i think i have missed a turn, I can figure it out!

Despite the route, the ride was beautiful. It was like 55deg and sunny at 7am (go in the mornings, before the tourists wake up!) The route went through residential areas, beautiful wooded roads, very well paved, and NO stoplights. (The only one I had was as I was coming back into Falmouth) Traffic was fairly non existent until I got back to town, so it was really nice!

Part of the route took me through a giant gated community - that was a missed turn too - which had some serious little hills. I think that might be a great place to go do some intervals, it seems like there are multiple options for 2ish mile loops. Oh and Giant houses with horses.

Then I rode my bike to work. My commute - 2 miles along a bike path which runs along the water... rough.

I found quite a few 40ish mile rides while on map my ride as well, hopefully I will get to check them out later this week or next.

Today’s Date: July 16, 2011

The weekends are blessings and curses. I have more time on weekends with which I can fill with exercise, but I also have always seen weekends as a short-term vacation; you try and go do and see everything that you can see before the week comes back. I have also been working on publishing my book, so that consumes a lot of time… but it’s one of those “once it’s done, it’s done; I won’t have to keep working on it forever.”

I did get to work out this morning, and I’m still trying not to over work. I am trying to keep a good balance and not get frustrated. I watched a documentary on juice fasts that was very inspiring and eye opening. I hesitate doing it not because I think it’s a fad diet; far from it. I had concerns about metabolism and colon issues. I work in the medical field and see a lot of issues with colons… so I’d like to do some research before I commit.

I have a physical in a few weeks. I’d love to see if I can get my cholesterol and sugars down before that appointment, and maybe that would be a great way to do it… I don’t know. I am intrigued I will say that for sure!

On one final note: I did find a way to tweak my foods to eliminate a lot of cholesterol and fat. I usually eat 2 egg whited and 1 egg. At first I was making cheese or shrimp and cheese omlets. Then I cut it back to just eggs. Today I fixed just egg whites (I know, nasty, right?!?!) but topped it with a little bit of spaghetti sauce. It was like an herb tomato top, and it added flavor to flavorless eggs. Nutrient-wise it was a great discovery!

It was 2 o'clock yesterday not long out of bed and as I was sitting on the computer playing video games I had this epiphany.

It was like some higher voice reached out and told me to get off my ass, stop been a nerd wasting your week off and go do something constructive.

I immediately grabbed my camera, shot out the door and headed down The Otways.

I managed to make it down the 366 steps by about 5 just in time for a very overcast sunset.

Walking back up those stairs in the dark was a little bit painful but worth it

I still can't explain how much I like doing this, it's the adventure of it that gets me every time. Photography takes the sidelines and I just see stuff with my eyes rather than interrupt everything with a camera. It's liberating.

I haven't been feeling very confident in my photography lately; almost to a point where I wonder if I'm supposed to be a photographer at all. The bar of attaining some sort of personal vision is intimidating to say the least. There's just an overwhelming sense of inadequacy in me that I'm struggling to get rid of.

Also fighting a sickening case of apathy and really trying to live out that title. Life is too short.

I've been spending some time in the mountains though, not as much as I would like to but enough to keep my head clear. It's funny how getting physically lost helps solidify things in my head.

This is off my first roll of 135 in my new (but old) canon A-1. I love that camera, still trying to iron out some technical failures on my part but seeing through a full frame viewfinder beats the life out of any APS-sized dSLR hands down. Can't wait until I get the funds together for a 5dmkii (somehow).

August 15

Yesterday we went for a snooze at six, and failed to wake up until nearly 11, meaning too late to do anything really, so we went back to bed.

All would have been well if the car hadin’t got bored and made the alarm go off twice. No idea what was wrong, so in the end we had to leave the car unlocked.

All was well this morning when we got up at six. Got up, but had been laying awake for at least two hours. But all was well, just now we could get up and go do stuff again. And as before, do the really popular stuff when the park is either empty or asleep, which is why we were heading for the Canyon and two sets of falls before seven, and just as the sun was rising.

As was the mist.

Mere photographs could not do the scenes justice, the morning light on the mist as it rolled down from the mountain tops, all tinged in pink. We do stop a couple of times for shots, but mostly just enjoy being some of the few people up and around at the early hour, lucky enough to see it.

We arrive at Canyon Village, and fill up the car, as it was reminding us it had only 45 miles of fuel left, and Yellowstone wasn’t the best of places to run out of fuel. However, I can say I am one of the few people to have locked the keys to his hire car, in the hire car, on the top of a mountain. You really could not make this up.

So with the car refuelled, we drive to the lower falls, and first of all go to the overlook, and with the mist wrapped round the fir trees on the edge of the gorge missing in with the spray from the waterfall, and again with the golden light, it was magical.

There was a train: three eights of a mile long, but dropping 660 feet. I knew the shots would be worth it, so we start to totter down. And down, and down. Zig zagging down the side of the gorge, with the roar of the falls getting ever louder.

With every step down, we would have to climb back up, and at over 7,000 feet, it was going to be interesting.

Once down at the bottom, there was a viewing platform right over the falls, allowing you to look down from the edge of the cataract. It was magical, and with just three young guys from Boston with us, we had it all to ourselves.

Of course, then came the walk back up, stopping every turn or two, but recovery seemed to get quicker and easier, and in ten minutes or so, we were at the top.

We have breakfast of salad and nectarines, I kid you not, before the short drive to the upper falls, where there was a less steep and much shorter set of steps to the viewing platform, made all the more magical by the mist that had risen. I snap it, and the mist wreathed trees on the far bank, then walk up where there was a small conference on what to do next.

In our preparations, we had left two days without accommodation booked, to allow us some flexibility, however, those two days were on Friday and Saturday, and all rooms in and around Yellowstone might be booked.

We drive round to Cooke City, Montana, where we had both thought the main street looked fun and nice to stay at. Once there was asked at the tourist information if they could help in finding a room, but we were told we would have to visit each and every motel and bar, casino to ask if they had rooms.

Only one did, but it didn’t really meet our standards these days, so we went back to the tourist information to use their free wifi, and after consulting a map, chose a town in southern Montana, did a search for rooms and came up with a condo with suits, and free wifi which should mean being online a little. It was all booked, so worries over, and being midday, we go over to a place opposite for lunch, our first meal in 22 hours, and have burgers. It was either that or steak.

Not the best burgers of fries in the world, but good enough to these hungry bunnies, we ate outside, the only ones to do so, but soaking up the rays, now that the sun had broken through.

On our way back to the park we see a cabin selling ice cream, so call in, and were given a waffle cone each with five scoops of creamy goodness, and these were just the singles at 3 bucks fifty each! Jools could not finish hers, but I wasn’t going to let huckleberry ice cream go to waste. I eat all mine, all except for the drips down my t shirt.

On the way back to the cabin, we stop many times to take in the views, or to look for wildlife. A friendly chap showed me where some mountain goats could be seen about a mile away, but also gave me the heads up on an Osprey’s nest near to the road further on.

At an overlook of a shallow river, Jools and I spend a fine half hou chasing butterflies, American Painted Ladies and some kind of Fritillary. All wonderful, and some photographed.

A few miles on, we see the Osprey’s nest and stop, next to the guy who told me about it. We watch to juveniles stretching and flapping their wings, and I rattle off probably 50 shots.

We move on and finally come to a place where a herd of Bison where near to the road, so we stop and I snap many of the animals, some rolling around in a dust bath. Just fabulous.

Back in Mammoth, we visit the upper terraces of the falls near to the cabin, but it is a joyless experience because of the numbers of people, but then still got some shots. But we can return in the evening or early tomorrow,

We had burgers for lunch, again, so in the evebing, in the hope of improving our diet, we go to the resoty restauratn, in the hope of vegetables, in for not other reason. We hadin’t booked a table, so had to wait 40 minutes, so retired to the bar, and where I was recommonded a pint of Moose Drihhle, a dark beer I was told. Turned out to have great depth of falvour, and it was a shame when that came to an end, but no worry as our table was ready, so we celebrated by odering a bottle of wine. We ordered bluse, but red came, but what the heck.

I had fillet of bison, showing they just don’t look good, the taste it too, it was accompanied by some mashed taters, and boccolini. Or, broccoli that had been on a diet. All good, as was the wine, and we may return to sample the huckleberry margarita.

We walked back under a clear sky with the crescent waning moon high overhead. We were pooped, and it was cold, just above freezing, so we took to our beds.

The Town of Bedlam: Scene 33

[Sarah] This is Sarah Adams reporting live from Dragontooth Bay with more breaking news. Just moments ago I was an eye witness to a band of terrorists who entered that cave behind me. They were holding two hostages at gunpoint. Two officers ran inside ahead of everyone else and a minute later there was a loud boom. The rest of the officers entered and we heard what sounded like gunfire followed by a loud explosion.

Oh look.. here comes the heroic officers now and it appears they have a prisoner. Let's see if we can find out what happened. This is officer Hayes and Barnham. We met about an hour ago. Officer Barnham, could you tell the audience what happened in there?

[Officer Barnham] How many people are watching this?

[Sarah] Well, considering this is really huge news.. probably the whole world is watching you right now.

[Officer Barnham] Oh.. we are victorious! After we made our way inside the cave we had to walk through a maze of blood and guts. They used to be our co-workers before they were blown to bits. It had the feeling of being inside a Halloween fun house for a moment there. I have to admit, I'm not going to miss officer Boggs much. He was a douchebag and he was to chicken shit to face me in the boxing ring.

[Sarah] What happened after that?

[Officer Barnham] Then the terrorists shot both hostages and Tex gave Hayes the order to fire his rocket launcher. I've never seen anything like that before. It was bombtastic!

[Sarah] Officer Hayes, can you tell us what you're feeling right now?

[Officer Hayes] I don't really know. I think I'm feeling great. I'm not sure. Strange, it didn't hit me until just now.

[Sarah] What didn't?

[Officer Hayes] That I just killed multiple people. Suddenly I don't feel so good. I think I need to go sit down for a few minutes and contemplate.

[Officer Barnham] You go do that partner, take a breather fit for a hero!

[Sarah] I hope everything is alright with him.

[Officer Barnham] He'll be fine. He just needs a moment.

[Tex] Hayes, I saw you sitting over here looking like you're down in the dumps. What's eating you up inside?

[Officer Hayes] That was the first time I ever killed someone. I'm being bombarded with feelings coming at me from all directions.

[Tex] Listen up son, what you did took real grit. Not everyone has the backbone to take another man's life. I was 8 years old when I quit hiding in the shadow of my Mama's apron. The fact of the matter is that we live in a world where wickedness is lurking from behind every bush, around every corner, under every bridge. It's everywhere Hayes. There's a piss ton of evil people that deserve to be buried as soon as possible.

Take these two miscreants for example. The both of 'em are already corpses, they just don't know it yet. That pedophile clown's record says that he either molested or sexually assaulted more than five hundred adolescents. Why someone like him is still breathing has me baffled. He should've been put down a long time ago. Degenerates like him only create misery for others. It's a chain reaction of suffering for everyone involved and it's constantly branching out. Anytime you have the opportunity to remove a criminal from the living world you're performing a great service. Do you see what I'm getting at? All I can do is explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

[Officer Hayes] That's a good point. I hadn't looked at it like that before.

[Tex] What are they teaching you at the police academy nowadays? Think I need to have a talk with the instructors there. I'm of the opinion they're making you boys softer with each graduating class. In my book that'll only get you cashed out. So, where are you gonna go when you leave here?

[Officer Hayes] We were on our way to visit the prison to have a look around when we spotted the terrorists.

[Tex] That's a right smart plan you got there. I wouldn't mind going with and getting the list of all inmates serving a life sentence and put a slug in all their brains.. but I gotta stay behind and find out what this terrorist knows. If the prison warden gives you any trouble you tell 'em that I'll put him on trial if he gives you any problems.

[Officer Hayes] Okay, I will. Thanks for the talk. I actually feel much better now.

This bad boy arrived this morning at my house. And it is awesome. From a few test shots, I can say that it is super sharp, even sharper than my former 70-200, the non-IS f/4. I had read online that this was a soft lens, especially wide open, and I just can't see it. Off to go do push ups between now and my WDW trip to get used to lugging this bad boy around.

Its been 2years today since Ross left us, so I decided to go do a sunset, mind you the clouds didn't play the game as he would have said, but I still like the shot. I miss him terribly and I know he is up there looking out for me..Cher x

Deer Family Series Pic # 1

Well persistence pays off, I have been tracking this family of white tailed deer for a few days and I was lucky enough to capture some amazing images and spend some one on one time with this family group…

I don't do series often but this last few days of work is worth sharing.

so the story starts on saturday 7/15 I arrived at my spot early and noticed a Doe running down the side of the road (pic I posted 7/16 ) made some notes got some nice pics and decided there has to be more around so on 7/19 I decided to go do some tracking so I arrived before sun up and headed out and the results will be shown in my next few posts: ( sorry for the drawn out story )

So as I walked the trail as the sun came up been eaten by deer fly's with sweat dripping off me the first one to appear was the Fawn ( based on the spots its about 4 to 5 months old ) and was totaly unafraid…..

So mommy had her own photoshoot to go do the other day. We were going to go to the park with her, but things were running late. For any of you that don't have children you should learn early that schedules and staying on time are imperative to maintaining your sanity. Dinner time, nap time, reading time, all of it. Get it on lock, and stay on target. So, when mommy's session was going to start an hour late and well into dinner time we went on our own adventure to a nearby park. We had our picnic pack, some toys, and a sense of adventure in our bones. Fiona suddenly realized that she could pick up sticks, which meant pretending to be Bumblebee Boy's character from her favorite book series, Lady bug Girl. If you have children under 5, buy the books, they'll love them! In the book that introduces BB, he has a stick which he uses as his "stinger". Fiona saw sticks everywhere, and immediately made the connection. So, we explored the park finding monsters she could save us from.

This, led to a tree in the back of the park. A nice old tree with no real leaves yet since winter. Fiona said it was "a monster that wanted to grab us". But, she was going to protect us, because she had the stinger. My friend Sam brought his Canon MKII with a 24-70mm lens. I asked if I could use it, he agreed. I asked Fiona what she could do to save us and she said "I'm going to jump up and sting this tree monster!". I giggled inside, but played along. "Thank you Super Fiona, please don't let it get us". Then, as if she had ACTUALLY found a super power I watched my 3 year old daughter jump like she was in the NBA. It was unbelievable, and I swear to you there is no photoshop in her leap distance in this shot, it's all her! I was in awe, and she was so proud of herself when she realized that not only had she reached the tree, but she gave it a good whack.

Shortly after this we packed up the picnic basket, rattled off some pics of her brother playing around, and we all headed home a little dirty and tired. It was a great afternoon.

I have stopped putting watermarks on my work, cause I don't really like them. But my work is mine and I want it to stay that way.

I frequently use my daily Flickr challenges as an excuse to abandon chores and go do something I really want to do. Indeed, it’s the very reason I sign up for these photo scavenger hunts! Today I decided to forget about vacuuming and drive over to Benicia for the official tour of the Fischer-Hanlon House at Benicia Capitol State Historic Park.

Joseph and Catherine Fischer remodeled the former hotel for their family in 1858. It was occupied by successive generations of the family until it was donated with its contents to the State of California in 1969 by granddaughters, Raphaelita and Catherine Hanlon. According to our tour guide, their only specific instructions regarding placement of the furnishings was that an unusual statue and a child’s portrait in the parlor not be moved from their positions. I’d be very interested to hear the story behind that! the statue is included in the photo below - see 1st comment box.

So, today was a very busy day. Woke up, literally threw on clothes and walked out the door, went Shopping with my Momma, Grandma, and Aunt, to do shopping for My Grandparents 50th Wedding Anniversary this Saturday. Then we came home, cooked, ran back out to the store, came home, finished cooking, ate, played a 3 hour long game, which I totally Won! Haha.

So yeah. This is my Photo for today, not Sooo Amazing. But I think it's beautiful. I Personally love the Sun Flair. But the stupid little sign at the right kinda ruins it a bit. Oh wells.

I'm going to be picking a A New Photographer to Feature tomorrow!

Maybe you've seen it too. While it hasn't struck everybody yet, it does seem to be making the rounds: an inexplicable urge to purge the Flickr account or just really ruffle things up.

And I'm here to tell you, people: before you start hitting that delete key STEP AWAY FROM THE COMPUTER. This could all just be a natural state in the flickr lifecycle.

Examples: bigaldavies dumping hundreds of photos; hyperbob uncontacting all his contacts and quitting all his groups; birdw0rks becoming a whole nother person; emdot removing testamonials (what was i thinking??!!); and then the biggest transgressors of all: people who delete their accounts (johnnyb!). I don't know what happened to efatima. :(

While I don't know everybody's story, I wonder if we (maybe even just for a split second) get too overwhelmed by the imagery, the personalities, the relationships, the groups, and more more more to see see see?

Maybe it's a response to online exhaustion?

I dunno.

But it seems to go like this: react and then a week later go "why in the heck did I do that?" Then, rejoin, reupload, recontact.

So, save yourself the hassle: if it strikes you, this Temporary Flickr Madness, just scoot the chair away from the computer. And go do something else. For about a week. And then like magic in seven days your heart'll be singing that Flickrsong again and all will be good in the Flickrverse.

Last night I was restless and couldn't sleep. So naturally what do you do, you go do some designing on your pc. Wanted to try something different and thought, not bad for a black & white with some gray and color thrown in.

Saturday, November 5 was the 3.1 mile walk fundraiser for Tampa Bay area - American Heart Association! I attended, walked, tweeted and photographed the event. Even had a Black Staff Shirt courtesy of @HeartTampaBay with wonderful instructions to go do what you best …and that is tweet and cover the back story!

I found and tweeted three great stories! The first was a heart transplant survivor who was walking the route. Second was a mother - daughter reunion which showed the perseverance of a daughter who was given up for adoption to find her mother. Third, was a young lady I walked with for a bit who was new to the area.

OOOOhhhh, yeah! It's Friday. Big plans this weekend, leading up to my birthday next Saturday. Leaving for CA on Wednesday, but not before spending the weekend with some much-needed downtime.

My one and only true love Bruce got me a gift certificate to my favorite Korean spa, where I'm going to get several layers of skin scrubbed off. If you've never had the intense pleasure of a Korean Spa treatment, you need to find one and go there right now, do not pass go, do not collect $200. It's a treat that I've not found an equal for in ... well, ever.

For FGR - In the Mouth. I didn't even look at FGR until I looked at Jenn's stream. How nice that my photo fit the group for the day. Hee.

The canyon is pretty narrow at this point (hence the name), so we were in shade most of the morning. The light bounced off the red walls, though, giving everything a reddish shade in this part.

At this point, we're about 2 hours into the hike. We're happy, things are going okay. The problem is, we don't really know how far we've gone. Our goal is Big Springs, the farthest point you can go doing the "Bottom-Up" hike. (You need a permit to go farther than that.) That's about 10 miles round trip. The Ranger led tour (which wasn't available on the days we were there) goes 6 miles round trip, and is advertised to take about 4 hours. Based on that, I assume we're only about halfway done with the shorter part, but with no detailed map and no markings we just don't know.

We continue hiking for another couple of hours and still haven't hit Big Springs. By this point, I'm kind of tired and about realizing that every step we take is another step we're going to have to take on the way back. We were in that frustrating position of not really knowing if Big Springs is right around the next bend or not.

One other thing you may have noticed in these pictures--we're almost completely alone. There were a few hikers that entered the water around the same time as us, but none ended up going as far as us. It's actually really nice feeling like we have the canyon to ourselves, but there's no one to ask for more information.

And then...

We hit a point where the water goes up to my belly, meaning up to Benson's chest or so. We're starting to get cold, and there's still all shade. We see a hiker coming from the other direction--it turned out he had camped overnight and was coming through. He told us Big Springs was another couple of hours. Oh man... I'm ready to turn around, but Benson convinces me to go around the next bend. A short time later we meet a couple who say it's only about an hour, but that there are some deep parts to get through.

They weren't lying. We got to a point where we were on some dry land with a big rock. We could enter the water to the right of the rock, but there was a buildup of some foamy dead branches and when Benson stuck his hiking stick in he couldn't find the bottom. We decided to go around the left of the rock. Things started out okay, but soon the water was up to my chest. I said "I'll hold our bag above my head" and that I would go first. If it got too deep we would turn around. The water ended up going to just below my neck, and Benson made it through. Unfortunately, one casualty was our camera--we had it in a plastic bag inside Benson's "water resistant" shirt, but the bag had holes in it and the camera got wet, and it wouldn't turn on anymore. That's why there aren't any pictures of our return trip. (It dried out by the next day, though, and started working again.)

At this point, we're cold and Benson is starting to shiver. Not just a little, but kind of uncontrollably. We're still in shadow, but while we're stuffing our stuff in our dry bag (we had brought one, but didn't use it since the water wasn't that deep... until it was), I saw the sun was climbing down the canyon wall on the other side... and fast. Within a few minutes, it had reached the bottom of that side, but we were still in the shade. Getting over there meant crossing through the water again... which didn't seem that appealing given how cold we were.

We bit the bullet and did it... and boy did that sun feel good. We knew we'd have to go through the deep part again, though, but we could see sun had reached the bottom on the way back. Without much of a glance ahead, we decided to head back and into that sun. We had hiked nearly 4 hours, and I knew that meant 3-4 hours of a return hike.

The hike back was fairly uneventful--there weren't really any unknowns at this point. It was just very tiring. One of the descriptions I read said the hike wasn't cardiovascularly difficult, but the concentration required to walk over the rocks was wearing. That was very true... I wasn't out-of-breath worn out, I was just tired. And slow.

On our way back, the canyon was filled with sun, which was beautiful. It also started to fill up with people the closer we got back to the beginning. People were wearing swimsuits, riding little rafts, and generally raucous. It was a much less quietly-enjoy-nature experience than the hike in had been. The sun was starting to dry me out, and I was moving very slowly at the end--by the time we got to the Riverwalk and were walking back, old ladies were passing me. But I made it!

We stopped by Zion Adventure Company when we were in Springdale the next day, and they had a map up on the wall. The map would have been useful because it had some landmarks we could have used. It had a little icon of a hand sticking out of the water to indicate the point we'd reached... it turned out to be about 3.5 miles in; we would have had to go another mile or so to get to Big Springs.

Still, despite the cold and weariness, I'd do it again. With a map and better shoes, and a better sense of what to expect I'm sure we could make it to Big Springs. Someday.

This will be finished! Oh and I can't wait. Of course, now that it's healed and not itching insanely anymore...I get to go do it again!
