[While I upload photos from 2020, I am also trying to keep up with some of my more current works by uploading a couple of photographs every day, in the afternoon or evening.]

In September and October 2021, we spent three weeks touring the Italian regions of Abruzzo, Umbria, Marches and Emilia-Romagna, which we hadn’t visited yet.

Personally, I had my sights firmly set on a series of early Romanesque churches of high architectural and artistic interest, so you will see quite a few of those, in spite of the typical Italian administration-related problems I encountered, and which were both stupid and quite unpleasant.

There will also be other sorts of old stones, landscapes, etc., and I hope you will enjoy looking at them and have a good time doing so. If it makes you want to go, do, by all means, Italy is a wonderful country.

Today and the following days, we will spend some time to discover the beautiful early Romanesque church of Santa Maria in Valle Porclaneta, located in a quiet and faraway valley in Abruzzo.

Built most likely between 1000 and 1050 as part of a Benedictine monastery, it shows some Oriental influences. The fore arch was built later in lieu of a cloister which has now all but disappeared. The pronaos that was the entrance to the church still exists and stands nearby, I will show it in a photograph to be uploaded in the following days.

The church is designed on a basilica-type plan with three naves and one semi-circular apse. Inside, as in the Santa Maria del Lago church we have already seen, there is a magnificently sculpted ambone (elevated pulpit), also attributed to Nicodemo di Guardiagrele, as in Santa Maria del Lago. The sculptures on it, as well as the motifs that decorate the ciborium

above the altar and the capitals, are typical of Benedictine imagery with Byzantine and Oriental influences.

This church also retains an almost intact cancel, partly made of a long piece of carved wood from the 12th century, which is a masterpiece and a truly unique piece of artistry.

The façade.

Once a month, my wife and I each take a kiddo and go do something fun - some kind of treat. Then, we swap kiddos the next month, rinse-and-repeat.

This month we went to "Grinkers", a retro arcade dedicated to this guy's collection of 70s - 80s video games, pinball machines etc. Bit of a step back in time to see all the old games we grew up playing and getting to share with the latest generation of video game junkies.

Character Creation

Caroline "Carol" Ferris is a fictional character appearing in the DC Comics Universe. She is one of many characters who has used the name Star Sapphire, and the long-time love interest of Hal Jordan, the Silver Age Green Lantern. In her role as Star Sapphire, Ferris has been active as both a supervillain and, more recently, as a superhero.

Ferris has appeared in various media outside comics, primarily in association with Green Lantern. Kari Wahlgren, Jennifer Hale, Olivia d'Abo, and others have voiced the character in animated television series and films. Furthermore, Ferris appears in the live-action film Green Lantern, portrayed by Blake Lively.

Publication history

Carol Ferris first appeared in Showcase #22, and was created by John Broome and Gil Kane. As a Star Sapphire, she first appeared in Green Lantern vol. 2 #16.

As her normal self (or, in other words, when she wasn't being Star Sapphire), Carol's character has remained fairly constant all the way from her first appearance in 1959 up through to the present day.

She's lived her life, had her ups and downs (both business related and in regards to her personal life), but mostly she's been portrayed fairly constantly throughout. Initially she was portrated as a lonely multimillionairess (or it was that Hal Jordan thought).

It is true that, as time has gone on and cultural sensibilities have changed, she's undergone significant changes in how her character was written, but no more so than would be the case with any other character who's had such a long publication history (1959-present). As a comparison, her character has changed in portrayal a fair amount less than, say, Lois Lane's has.

In recent years though, with the advent of the Star Sapphire Corps, and the accompanying ability her new ring granted her to remain herself as Star Sapphire, the major event in her life is that she's started to act as Star Sapphire, as a hero, on a regular basis, spending much of her time out among the stars, while still returning to Earth periodically to keep up with the company she owns.

Fictional Character History

As Star Sapphire

Unlike her civilian identity, Carol's alter ego, Star Sapphire, on the other hand, has gone through some very significant changes as time has gone on.

Femme Fatale (1959 - 1987)

Throughout this period, Carol's Star Sapphire persona was more prone to strong emotion, or being controlled or compelled by the Zamarons. She had varying degrees of control over her actions. Her main motivation often had a lot to do with winning Hal Jordan's heart, and/or seeking to be the Zamaron queen.

Villain (1987-1995)

She didn't really act in any way that could be considered truly malicious. And, in fact, would more often help Hal than vex him.

During this time, her modus-operandi shifted and she moved towards some seriously dark territory. Slavery, mind control, torture, even murder. Her relationship with her Star Sapphire persona changed towards something more like a split-personality, one that she very much wanted to be rid of.

Hero (2007 - present)

During the War of Light storyline, the Zamarons rethought their strategy in bringing love to the universe. They became less cynical, and acted with more open hearts when they gave up sending out Star Sapphire crystals, and instead forged rings that let the bearer retain most of, or even complete control over themselves (depending on their ability to control and focus their own emotions). They founded the Star Sapphire Corps, and sought out Carol to lead and guide them.

Carol accepted the charge and has sense fought to defend Zamaron from first the Sinestro Corps, then the Black Lanterns. Following that, she fought against the Blackest Night, helped guide The Predator to be a positive force, aided Hawkgirl and Hawkman against Queen Shrike during Brightest Day, fought against Krona in the War of the Green Lanterns, and has since joined Kyle Rayner's New Guardians team to continue her heroics.

Major Story Arcs

Secret Origin

Carol Ferris, owner of Ferris Air

(In Green Lantern #29-35 May-Nov 2009)

As a little girl, Carol was brought to watch the plains take off by her father, Carl Ferris (then owner of Ferris Aircraft). A young Hal Jordan was there too, watching his father's test flight. Carol and Hal talked, and found that they both wanted to be pilots when they grew up. Tragedy struck however, and Hal's father's plane crashed.

Years later, a grown woman, Carol's father had retired from running his company and left it to Carol to run. Prior to that, Carol had been fulfilling her dream of being a pilot, but she gave that up to run the company because she felt it was her responsibility.

Two years after she assumed control of the company, she went to a meeting at Arden Air. She was making a deal to buy the company from Ken Arden. Hal Jordan, who still blamed Carol's father for his dad's death (Carl Ferris had skied on materials to cut costs on the plane Hal's father had been flying that day), was working there.

There was a test flight flying out of Arden that day, and it went wrong. Hal, in his debut appearance as Earth's Green Lantern, saved the flight. Carol saw the whole thing, and was immediately smitten with him, much to Hector Hammond's consternation. Hammond, one of Carol's employees, had been trying to get Carol to agree to go out with him for some time, though Carol had continually refused him.

A week later, Carol was having trouble keeping her company afloat because some of the people who would have given her design contracts didn't respect her the way they had her father (presumably because she was a woman and, at that time, there was more than a little gender prejudice going around about things like women running businesses). For the same reason, she was getting a lot of resignations from former Arden employees who didn't like the change in leadership.

At the same time, Hammond was exposed to something and mutated into a highly disfigured telepath. When Hal came into her office to throw in his resignation with the rest (though, in his case, it had more to do with the grudge he still had against her father). Carol let him vent a little about his grudge, but then asked if he wanted to fly again. Hal had just recently crashed a test flight (when he'd gotten his Green Lantern ring) and prior to that, he had a real reputation as a risk-taker and a hot-head. Ken Arden had only kept him on because he'd known his dad. No one wanted to hire him either, just like no one seemed to want to fly for her. Hal took the job.

Hal flew his first test flight for Carol the next day, and when he landed the plain, Hammond attacked, intent on his feelings for Carol. Hal saved her though, but disappeared afterward mysteriously.

A couple days later, Hal showed up at Carol's house at night and demanded to see her father. It was then revealed that her father was sick, dying really. Carol told Hal that the guilt he had about his father's death had eaten him up inside over the years. Hal and Carol made a real connection that night, Hal telling Carol he was so sorry for what she was going through and that she wasn't alone.

From there on, Carol ran Ferris Aircraft with just Hal Jordan and Tom Kalmaku as her employees. Hal asked her out on a date, but Carol just smiled and said "Oh Jordan, everyone knows. I don't date employees". She went on to make her company into a success.

Note: This origin story is somewhat different, and more completely told, that the one told in the 1959-1960 Green Lantern books. The difference can be accounted for by the various events that would reshape reality in the DC Universe, such as Crisis on Infinite Earths, Zero Hour, and Infinite Crisis.

Justice

(In Justice #6-#7 Aug-Oct 2006)

In the midst of another crisis, where the villains have learned the heroes secret identities, John Stewart comes looking for Hal Jordan at Ferris Aircraft. Later, fearing for Carol's safety, Hal breaks up with her (again). He tells Carol he's just self-centered, and Carol cries hearing it.

The War of Light

(In Green Lantern #18-20, 38, 45, and Blackest Night: Tales of the Corps #2 May 2007-Sept 2009)

Carol's first major story arc after Hal's return, in which the two reconcile some of their emotions for one another. Unbeknownst to Carol at the time the Zamarons were consolidating the power of the Star Sapphire and creating their own intergalactic corps, the Star Sapphire Corps. In doing so they created instead of the Star Sapphire a number of Violet Power Rings.

In preparation for the anticipated events of Blackest Night, Carol was once again confronted by the power of the Zamarons, except it was in the unfamiliar version of the power ring. This allowed Carol to enact a degree of control over the ring which she never had previously, and in which she maintained control of her conscious mind during when she wore the ring. She was thus identified by Queen Aga'Po as the one that could be able to tame the sentient embodiment of love, the Predator.

As the events of the War of Light began to come to a head, she was instructed by the Zamarons that she was to be the leader of the Star Sapphire Corps, and that if she didn't accept, she wouldn't be there to help Hal when he would really need it.

On Zamaron, she helped to build the ranks of the new Star Sapphire Corps, and when Sinestro attacked, intent on freeing the female members of the Sinestro Corps who were imprisoned there in sapphire crystals awaiting a time when those crystals would be able to draw out the love in their hearts and reform them. The process and already worked on Yrra Cyrill (formerly known as Finality), and Yrra joined Carol in defending Zamaron.

Carol and Sinestro fought in a pitched battle in the midst of the conflict, but their fight was interrupted by onset of the Blackest Night.

Blackest Night

(In Green Lantern #45-48, 50-51, Blackest Night #1-8, and Blackest Night: Wonder Woman #3 Sept 2009-May 2010)

When the Blackest Night fell over the universe, Carol was on Zamaron, defending it and her Corps from attack by the Sinestro Corps. Carol was battling Sinestro himself, when the Black Lantern Corps arrived on the scene and attacked both Corps. Carol and Sinestro called a true to fight back against them, then Hal Jordan teleported in with the aide of Indigo-1 and Munk of the Indigo Tribe (note: members of the Indigo have the ability to teleport, and they are the only type of lantern in the spectrum that can do so).

The new additions (minus Munk whom Indigo-1 sent to Oa) joined Carol in her fight, but the battle was effectively lost when two Black Lantern rings entered the Sat Sapphire central power battery and called Khufu and Chay-ara, whose dead bodies (frozen in an eternal embrace) were being used to power the battery.

The battery was destroyed, the Star Sapphires and Zamarons fled Zamaron, The Predator broke free of it's crystal prison, and Carol teleported away with Indigo-1, Hal, and Sinestro. Indigo-1 teleported them to Korugar, Sinestro's planet of origin. Indigo-1 told them that they had to unite all the Corps to battle the Black Lanterns. She'd brought them to Korugar so that Sinestro could retake control of all of his Corps from Mongul. Sinestro won, and then two Black Lanterns arrived there too. Carol helped the others destroy them, and then they (Carol, Indigo-1, Hal, and Sinestro) traveled to Odym, home of the Blue Lantern Corps. Larfleeze the Orange Lantern's constructs were attacking. They were about to aid the Blues when his constructs evaporated becasue Larfleeze was under attack by Black Lanterns.

Carol's group, now joined by Saint Walker of the Blue Lanterns, teleported to Okaara to aide Larfleeze and, as it turned out, find Atrocitus of the Red Lantern Corps as well. Carol joined the others in destroying the Black Lanterns there.

The leaders of all seven Corps brought together, they traveled to Ryut in Space Sector 666 to meet Ganthet and Sayd to plan their next move. That done, they traveled to Earth, where the final battle would take place, and came to the rescue of a group of Earth heroes, including Wonder Woman.

They destroyed the rouge Guardian of the Universe, Scar, and attacked the Black Lantern central power battery. That was when Nekron (the being behind Blackest Night) turned the Earth heroes into Black Lanterns, even though they were still alive.

They fought and came up with the plan to deputize some of Earth's heroes to help in the fight, one to each Corps leader. Carol chose Wonder Woman as her partner.

That was when The Spectre, who had been turned into a Black Lantern, attacked. Carol and Diana fought along with the others against him, but he was too powerful, even for all of them combined. Hal got the idea of letting Parallax free and letting it possess him again so he'd have enough power to fight and beat Spectre. Hal and Spectre fought, and when it was over, Carol was able to pull back Hal and get him free of Parallax again.

After that, The Entity manifested, there was a huge fight, and the heroes won the day.

In the aftermath, once the deputations were withdrawn, Queen Mera was dying becasue her heart wasn't beating any more thanks to her having been a Red Lantern. Carol used her and Arthur's love to restart her heart and save her life.

The New Guardians

(In Green Lantern #53-58 June-Dec 2010)

Following the events of Blackest Night, Carol and Hal went to get drinks and eat at the bar at Ferris Air in Coast City. They talked a while, but it seemed to Carol they were just talking in circles, not getting to anything real, so she told Hal that they never did have much luck talking with a table between them and suggested they take their conversation airborne. So they both suited up, got in the cockpits, put on their flight helmets (which had their call-signs on them, "Sapphire" and "Highball"), and took off in a couple of planes from the nearby hangers.

Carol asked Hal what he wanted, why he'd come out with her when he was still seeing Cowgirl. Hal was just about to answer when Sinestro came flaying right at them and blew up their planes by flying into them, head-on, at high speed. Luckily, both Carol and Hal had been wearing their power rings and were able to shield themselves and power up to meet the threat.

They battled with him, but he insisted he came in peace. It turned out Sinestro wasn't looking for a fight, he'd basically just been being a jerk when he destroyed their aircraft. He'd actually come to ask for their assistance.

Apparently, after Nekron and his Blackest Night had been beaten back, The Entity left in it's wake a white lantern power battery. So the three of them traveled to where it was, in Silver City, New Mexico. They all took turns trying to lift it, no no avail. Then they tried all lifting it together; it didn't work, but The Entity did tell them "Help Me Live" and showed them a vision of the seven Emotional Embodiment Entities - The Predator, Adara, Proselyte, Ion, The Butcher, Parallax, and Ophidian - telling them that they were in danger and needed to be saved.

It then teleported them to New York City and told them to seek help from Atrocitus. They found him in the subways, calling for a blood prophecy, and Carol had to stop Hal from starting a fight with him. That's when Lobo showed up, ostensibly trying to collect a bounty on Atrocitus. Carol mostly stayed out of the fight, though at one point she did attempt to encase Lobo in a sapphire crystal to bring out whatever love he may have had in his heart. He apparently didn't have much to work with though, becasue it didn't work and he broke free.

Carol, Hal, Sinestro, and Atrocitus finally manages to drive Lobo away, and Hal reluctantly agrees to work with Atrocitus becasue he wants to stop the seven entities so much. He thinks they're all bad news, mostly becasue of his horrific experience with Parallax. Carol disagrees though, saying what if the entities are like the different Corps, some good and some bad?

From there, the group splits up. Carol goes after the Predator, Hal after Ophidian, and Sinestro and Atrocitus go after The Butcher.

Carol tracks The Predator to Las Vegas, Nevada, where she gets a message through her ring from Queen Aga'po of the Zamarons that she needs to find her quarry soon, becasue the Star Sapphire Corps central battery is losing power. Unbeknownst to Carol, Aga'po has been giving the battery her own power, her own immortal life-force and beauty, to keep it going since the Black Lanterns destroyed the previous power source the battery used. Aga'po is planning to use The Predator as the new power source, but cautions Carol that The Predator is dangerous and violent. Carol, whose been possessed by The Predator in the past when her heart was broken by Hal once upon a time and she had lost faith in love, doubts what Aga'po says about the Predator being violent by nature is true, but none the less continues her mission to find it.

What she finds though, is Larfleeze in a casino making trouble becasue of an all you can eat buffet he's spotted. That's when The Predator makes it's appearance, having possessed a man named Abraham Pointe. Abraham was a shy loner type who had a crush on a kind and pretty woman named Lisa who worked at that casino. He'd been coming to that casino and taking her picture for a long time, but had never believed in himself enough to think that someone as good and amazing as her would return his feelings.

The Predator, attracted to his despair and wanting to heal it, possessed him and brought him to Lisa, but basically charged in like a bull in china shop while doing it. Carol fought the possessed man, trying to get him to stop, believing that The Predator was being driven by the man it had possessed, and not the other way around. The Predator was just too powerful though, but not really interested in fighting her back that much. That's when Hal came on the scene and started to fight The Predator.

Becoming Queen of the Star Sapphires

Carol used the detraction to talk to Lisa and discover that she had no idea who Abraham was, that they'd never met. That's when Carol figured out what was going on. She talked to the possessed man, calmed him down, told him that we all want to be loved and that it was okay to feel that way, then she kissed him and The Predator left him.

Having achieved her objective, the Zamarons teleported Carol, The Predator, Hal, Abraham, and Larfleeze to Zamaron.

On Zamaron, Aga'po and the other Zamarons wanted to put The Predator into their central power battery to stop it's power from fading away, and to keep The Predator contained so it wouldn't be a danger to others. Carol argued that The Predator shouldn't be locked away, that it seeks out hosts that don't know what love is in order to heal them. That the damage done is the fault of those hosts who take a rocky path towards discovering their path towards love, and not due to any violent intent on the part of The Predator. After all, a heart that does not believe in love is a lonely one, prone to acting out it's sorrows, frustrations, and pain.

Further, she says that they don't even need The Predator to power their battery, that none of the other Corps use anything save belief to power their batteries (though it's worth noting that, in the case of the Red Lanterns, that is not actually true, becasue they use the blood of the guilty for that purpose). Queen Aga'po takes Carol's words to heart, and pronounces that Control is right. She goes to the central battery and gives it the remainder of her life and her power in an act of faith in the power of love. With her last words, she names Carol as her successor as queen. With Aga'po's gift, the power battery blazes with new life and power and the Star Sapphire Corps are saved. (A statue is later built on Zamaron in Aga'po's honor.)

Carol then decides to stay on Zamaron to rebuild the Star Sapphire Corps and carry out her duties as the new queen. Hal argues with her that they need to continue hunting for the remaining entities on Earth, to protect them from the danger the white lantern warned of, saying that she can't seriously want to leave her life on Earth for being the queen of Zamaron. Carol says that, on the contrary, that's exactly what she's going to do. That if The Predator comes under threat, she and the Star Sapphire Corps will be there to defend it from harm.

Hal asks when she's going to return, and Carol says that she'll tell him the same thing he told her so many times "I'll be back when the job is done." At that, they part ways, and Hal goes back to Earth.

Brightest Day

(in Brightest Day #13 and #17-#18 Jan-Mar 2011)

On Hawkworld, high above the clouds of Nth City, Hawkgirl's mother, Khea Taramka (a.k.a. Queen Shrike) captured her and Hawkman and used them as part of a portal that would take her to Zamaron. When she arrived with her army of manhawks, Carol and The Predator were there waiting to confront them.

She fought her way through the manhawks to free Hawkgirl and Hawkman. While they had been battling her minions though, Khea had been attempting to make the Star Sapphire's central battery her own. They attacked her to try to stop her, but while Khea and her daughter were fighting, The Predator sensed Khea's black heart and was drawn to her, to bring her it's light and try to heal her. It possessed her, and Khea attacked them with The Predator's power.

Carol told them that the only way to release The Predator from inside Khea would be to get her to feel love. Just after she told them that though, Khea imprisoned her within a sapphire crystal. She was only freed when Hawkgirl and Hawkman killed Khea and freed The Predator that way.

The battle over, Carol told them both that the love they had for one another was what had given them the power to kill Khea. She then teleported them back to Earth.

War of the Green Lanterns

(In Green Lantern #63-64 and 67 May-Aug 2011)

Hal, Indigo-1, Atrocitus, Saint Walker, and Larfleeze were gathered in space to discuss their next move against Krona when Carol was thrown through a teleportation portal into their midst, Krona's voice in her wake telling them that he now had all seven entities.

The New Guardians vs. Lyssa Drak

It's unknown weather Carol was thrown there by Krona for some reason, or if Carol escaped and came to warn them that Krona had captured the Predator and Krona simply used her escape portal to brag of his victory. In either case, the result was the same.

Moments later, Sinestro showed up to round out their team again. The seven of them tracked Krona's energy signature to Ryut, Atrocitus's dead home-world. They followed the trail into some caverns, where they found seven obelisks with seven glowing symbols one them, one for each Corps, ranging from red on one side to violet on the other. In the center of the obelisks was the Book of the Black. The book opened, and dark energy chains came out, striking them all in their eyes, showing them visions.

The chains released them and from the book appeared Lyssa Drak, the story vampire and a former member of the Sinestro Corps. She had changed allegiances to Krona, since Sinestro had abandoned her during Blackest Night, Lyssa attacked them with more chains, and they were all but helpless. All of them, save Hal, whom Sinestro was able to knock free just in time, were drawn into the book.

Inside the book, Carol and the others experienced alternate versions of what their lives might have been. In Carol's case, she lived an illusory life where she and Hal were together and in love.

Hal, with Kyle Rayner's help, eventually was able to free them all, and Carol got her Sapphire ring back. Hal was stripped of his ring by the Guardians of the Universe, and Carol followed him back home to Earth.

Flashpoint

(In Flashpoint: Hal Jordan #1-3 Aug-Oct 2011)

Trying to torment Barry Allen (The Flash), Professor Zoom (The Reverse Flash) went back in time and changed history so that he never became The Flash in the first place, and this resulted in a changed history for the entire world - the world of Flashpoint.

In this world, Carol still grew up being childhood friends with Hal Jordan, and the both of them still dreamed of being pilots when they grew up. They still both witnessed Hal's father die in a crash. But in this world, Hal never became Green Lantern. Instead, he and Carol grew up together and both followed their dreams to become pilots.

Carol 'Sapphire' Ferris in the pilot's seat defending America's coastline during the war

Carol 'Sapphire' Ferris in the pilot's seat defending America's coastline during the war

That dream turned into something of a nightmare though, when the war between Atlantis, the Amazons, and the human race came to America.

Ferris Aircraft was drafted to provide coastal defense, and both Carol and Hal began flying defense patrols along the coast as private contractors for the air force.

They were first attacked by Shark (an agent of Atlantis) and then had to defend against an assault by the Amazons who flew invisible jets and dropped a mythological monster on their base. Together, Carol and Hal successfully repelled both attacks.

Hal soon after volunteered for a mission against the Amazon's capital city in England. He was to fly a nuclear bomb, named the Green Arrow, to their capital and drop it.

Carol joined the mission and flew with him and a squadron of other jets, including one flown by Blackhawk. The Amazons had an energy shield, and they were attacked on many fronts.

They received new orders for Hal to bomb the shield. Carol flew in with him to give him cover. Hal's plane was damaged, his electrical system stopped working.

They settled on the plan that they would fly their planes into the shield and bail out together before they hit. Only Hal's ejection system wasn't working, and he didn't tell Carol that, so he died in the explosion while Carol lived. The shield was taken down though.

Back at base, Carol was given Hal's effects, which included a journal where he confessed that he'd always loved her but had been afraid to say so, and a wedding ring he'd been planning to give her.

Barry Allen eventually recovered his memory of the timeline where he was The Flash and was able to rewrite history again, bringing about the world of DC's New 52.

Post-Flashpoint, Carol and Hal's story would remain essentially the same as it was pre-New 52 and pick up where it left off before the Flashpoint event, although many other characters within the DC Universe would undergo quite radical alterations.

Sinestro

(In the New 52's Green Lantern #1, 3, 5-7, and 12 Nov 2011-Oct 2012)

After the events of the War of the Green Lanterns, Hal was grounded on Earth. Carol hung up her own ring for a while too, to unwind from everything that had happened, to help Hal, and to have her life on Earth back.

Hal was going stir crazy though, and getting into trouble. He'd been cut from the air force for going A.W.O.L. for so long, and Carol had to bail him out of jail when he tried to play hero and messed it up. He asked her to get him back in the sky again, with a job at Ferris Air, but she had to turn him down becasue, with his track record, she couldn't insure any plane he was flying. She told him she would hire him, just not as a pilot. He changed the subject and asked her out to dinner.

Carol assumed it was a date, it was a fancy restaurant and everything, but it turns out he asked her to co-sign his car loan. She threw her drink in his face and walked out on him. He chased after her but really said all the wrong things (seriously, if he'd been any more dense, it would have been quite a trick) and she drove off and left him there stranded without a ride home

When she got home, she got a phone call from Tom Kalmaku, who told her turn turn on the TV. The news showed Hal as a Green Lantern again, working with Sinestro, also a Green Lantern (it happened at the end of War of the Green Lanterns). She could barely believe what she was seeing.

Hal left Earth with Sinestro, and didn't come back for more than a day. When he did return, Sinestro dumped him in an alley, again without a ring. He sought out Carol at Ferris Air. She asked him what the hell was going on, him working with Sinestro, and he kissed her and asked for a chance to explain himself.

He told her he'd been through something bad with Sinestro and the only thing that had got him through was thinking of her. He told he that he knew they'd never work out but that he wanted to try anyway. He asked for a second chance. Carol pointed out that, technically, it would be his tenth, but, none-the-less, she said yes, and they kissed.

A little while later, they went on a date to the Coast City Aeronautical Museum, and it went pretty well. They ended up back in bed at her place, and Hal was being attentive and romantic. It was great. Then a Green Lantern ring flew into the room and Sinestro showed up.

He told Hal he needed his help again - high stakes, fate of the universe in the balance, etc... Hal turned him down flat, twice. Sinestro didn't take no for an answer, and attacked Carol, wrapping her in a green energy construct and holding a green energy construct gun to her head, threatening to kill her if Hal didn't do what he asked. Hal decked him. They fought. The Indigo Tribe showed up and tried to capture both Hal and Sinestro. Carol put on her ring, and went to help Hal, but by the time she got there, the Indigo Tribe had teleported Hal and Sinestro off-world.

Shortly after this, Amanda Waller tried to recruit her for her new Justice League of America team. She turned her down and lied, telling her she didn't have her power ring anymore.

Rise of the Third Army

(In the New 52's Green Lantern: New Guardians #0, 13-16 and annual #1 Dec 2012-Mar 2013)

Carol went to Ferris Air after hours, meaning to check on Hal's power battery to see if he'd come back for it. There, she ran into Tom Kalmaku who was working late. Carol had Tom pick the lock on Hal's locker. Inside, they found his power battery untouched, as well as quite a few pictures of her, both with and without Hal in them, and, lastly, but perhaps most significantly, they found a wedding ring that Hal had been keeping there, which let Carol know he'd been planning to propose to her (or at least he was strongly considering it).

It was at this point that they saw a green figure flying towards them. Carol, naturally, thought it was Hal coming back to her, but it turned out to be Kyle Rayner instead. he'd come looking for Hal, seeking his help after what the other Guardians of the Universe did to Ganthet (his mentor).

Tom called them over to the TV then, and there they saw Hal and Sinestro battle Black Hand in a graveyard. Carol told Kyle to get to the cemetery as fast as he could, that she'd be following along right after him as soon as she could go get her ring.

When they got there, they found a bunch of the dead that Black Hand had risen from their graves attacking a contingent of the police. She and Kyle destroyed some and drover the rest back, telling the police that they would go in and handle the situation. They went in and found a crater where Kyle said he could sense that a yellow power battery had blown up there. Carol questioned him on why he could sense that, and he told her that, since he'd worn rings from six different corps at once (during the events of New Guardians #1-12), he'd been able to tap into some of the other colors of the emotional spectrum. Next they were beset bay a huge army of the the risen dead.

Things weren't looking that great when Kyle tapped into hope and will (blue and green) both at once to generate a large light flare that destroyed all their attackers. Carol told him that Hal had always said he was something special. Kyle asked his ring to locate Hal, and his ring told him that Hal was dead.

Carol refused to accept it, even when Kyle told her that Hal's ring had already found his replacement. She told him that she shared a heart tether with him and that it was still in tact, so he couldn't be dead.

Kyle was doubtful, Carol used her power to show Kyle a vision of his future drawn from his heart. It showed that he would have to combine the light of the seven corps himself. She said he would have to, if they were going to save the man she loved.

From there, Carol recruited Atrocitus to train Kyle in how to tap the red power of rage. Kyle could tap will (green) of course, and, thanks to his experience during War of the Green lanterns, he could tap hope (blue) reliably too, but not so the others.

Atrocitus took Kyle to Alex Dewitt's grave (his dead girlfriend who'd been murdered), hoping to tap into his rage that way. It wasn't working, Kyle just felt very sad, and Carol had a hard time letting Atrocitus keep beating him. Atrocitus finally confronted Carol, but she told him that of all the lanterns in the universe, she was the one he should be most afraid of becasue love was at the root of his rage. Atrocitus was actually quelled by this, but insisted on taking Kyle elsewhere to complete his training where Carol wouldn't interfere.

When Kyle came back, he'd learned what he needed from Atrocitus, and Carol had rebuilt Alex's grave from when Atrocitus had demolished it before.

From there, they parted ways for a time. Kyle went for training with Indigo-1, and Carol returned to Zamaron to report to them what she was doing with Kyle. The Zamarons' new queen made a show of discouraging her from helping Kyle at first, ordering her to return to her own space sector as all other Star Sapphire corpswomen were recently ordered by them to do (in actuality, this was a ruse on the part of the Zamarons to gain the Guardians of the Universe's trust so that they would be in a better position to stop their plans to rid the universe of free will through their third army; the Guardians were listening, so they had to put on a show for Carol). Carol defined them, telling them that she was on a mission to save a lost love, and wasn't that what the Star Sapphire Corps was all about? The Zamarons accepted her reasons and let her go on her way (the watching Guardians thought they did so so that they could use Carol to track Kyle).

Carol caught up with Kyle later, just as he was finishing his training with Arkillo, the last of the fear lanterns. From there, they left to go to Okaara to visit Larfleeze so Kyle could learn to wield avarice (orange). Larfleeze wouldn't help at first, but Carol convinced him, after she read his heart and saw that the thing he wanted most was to be reunited with his family. She promised to use her power to find them, if he helped Kyle, and he actually agreed.

The training was a success, but no sooner was it complete than the Third Army attacked. Sayd (who had promised to serve as Larfleeze's guardian to win his cooperation during Blackest Night) was able to hold them off though while they made their escape.

From there, they returned to Zamaron so that Kyle could learn to wield love too, the last emotional power he had yet to learn (and, for him, the most difficult one). While there, the Zamarons explained their ruse regarding the Guardians of the Universe and why they had acted as they had towards her before. They further assigned Carol the task of contacting Lady Styx, ruler of the Tenebrian Dominion, and seeking her help in the coming battle with the Guardians of the Universe and their Third Army.

Carol left on her mission, with Arkillo and Saint Walker as her partners. They managed to get themselves smuggled into the Dominion, but the place was pretty much nuts. Carol did manage to get a fairly brief audience with Lady Styx, but the infamous ruler turned her down and refused to help. She and her teammates were hunted by the local authorities and only just made it out by being very daring.

Carol made it back just in time to join in with Kyle and the Zamarons' battle with Ganthet, who had come to Zamaron to deal with Kyle. Ganthet was being powered by energy he and the other Guardians of the Universe were siphoning off of Volthoom the First Lantern, so he was much more powerful than one of his race usually would be (otherwise he would have stood no chance whatsoever against the forces arrayed against him). Carol and her team joined in the battle against Ganthet, but Ganthet was only finally driven off by Kyle when he finally learned to tap into the sapphire light of love, becoming a while lantern.

Wrath of the First Lantern

(In the New 52's Green Lantern: New Guardians #18-19 and Green Lantern #20-21 Apr-Aug 2013)

Carol, Kyle, Arkillo, and Saint Walker went to Oa to fight against the 3rd Amy, but instead found Volthoom (the first lantern) free. He trapped them all in alternate versions of their lives that were seemingly positive at first but all designed to end in tragedy so that he could feed on their emotions (his favorite emotion to feed on being despair).

In Carol's alternate life, she never took over her father's business, never gave up her dream to become a pilot. Her father died disappointed in her, Ferris air was bought by a company called Leviathan, and she ended up joining the air force, leading a squadron of fighter planes. Hal Jordan was one of the pilots under her command. It turned out that Leviathan (the company that also designed the defense systems on the aircraft carrier she was on) was a front for Atlantians, and they attacked. The Leviathan systems went off line and they were all but defenseless.

Carol took her plane up, intending to ram it into the Atlantian command ship to disable their control over the carrier's defense systems. She intended to bail out before it hit, but (notably reminiscent of how Hal died in the world of Flashpoint, Carol's ejection system jammed). However, as she was about to die, she felt love for her unit, for the people she was fighting for, and that let her transcend Volthoom's alternate reality and access her power as a Star Sapphire. She remembered who she really was and began to use her power to fight against the Atlantians. Volthoom saw this, and, his emotional meal spoiled by Carol's triumph, and Carol attacking him with he squadron backing her up, he ended the alternate world he crated.

Carol broke free of Volthoom and sped all out across the ocean to rescue Kyle, who wasn't faring nearly so well against Volthoom's attack on him. He'd sunk into despair. Volthoom was gone by the time she got there, but Kyle was in a bad way. She helped him to his feet and talked to him to snap him out of his despair. She told him he needed to use his ring to contact the other New Guardians to warn them about Volthoom. They couldn't reach anyone except Sinestro, who was now a Green Lantern.

They teleported to where he was, the remains of Korugar, Sinestro's home-world, which Volthoom had destroyed to 'teach him a lesson'. Kyle was caught up in sensing so much death, when Sinestro attacked them, thinking Kyle was in league with Volthoom becasue he wore a white ring. Carol defended Kyle, blocking Sinestro's attack. Sinestro got though, but Carol rallied and they fought until two Green Lanterns, B'dg and Simon Baz, showed up and they finally managed to connive Sinestro that Kyle wasn't in league with their enemy.

Sinestro all but begged Kyle to use his power to resurrect Korugar. Kyle tried, but couldn't. Sinestro stole his ring, and Carol saved Kyle from suffocating in space until the ring, rejecting Sinestro, returned to Kyle. Carol, Kyle, Baz, and B'dg faced off against Sinestro, ready for a fight, but he left, intent of finding Volthoom and getting revenge, now that he no longer held out any hope of returning Korugar to life again.

From there, Carol, Kyle, Baz, and Saint Walker gathered and led an army of Star Sapphires, Green Lanterns, and Blue Lanterns against Volthoom. As the battle ranged, Hal came on the scene as a Black Lantern, leading an army of Black Lanterns to fight Volthoom. In the end, Hal summoned Nekron to kill Volthoom, Hal was returned to life, and he and Carol were reunited.

Carol and Hal returned to Earth together, and Hal seemed to want to pick up where they'd left off when Sinestro had come to call at the start of the whole thing, but Carol, as it turned out, Carol just felt like she couldn't go through with it again. That she couldn't try to make it work with him again when it always seemed to go wrong again and again, and hurt her every time. She told him that she wanted to be with him, but felt she couldn't keep loving him unless it was at a distance. They broke up and went their separate ways, Carol deciding she wanted to follow her heart and become a Star Sapphire again. She told him maybe they would meet again out there among the stars.

The Quest Begins

(In the New 52's Green Lantern: New Guardians #21-23)

On Earth, Hal having left, Carol stayed put for a while to keep up with her duties as the owner of Ferris Air. She also helped Kyle Rayner back up his things and put them into storage in prior to his going off into space with the Guardians of the Universe (the ones who had been guarding Volthoom for so very long). Kyle left, and she went back to her company.

Some days later, the Guardians tapped into her ring and teleported her across the universe becasue Kyle needed her help again. He'd been captured by a new threat called Relic. Relic had placed him in a dream world where he was tricking him into telling him everything her knew about all seven corps. She was able to focus her power through Exeter's energy channeling apparatus and break though Relic's shield, and enter into Kyle's dreamworld. Because of the trust they'd developed between them, she was able to convince Kyle that what he was experiencing was a trick and that he had to snap out of what Relic was doing to him and fight free. It worked, and kyle was able to make his escape.

Relic left after that though and did not attempt to recapture Kyle or retaliate against Carol, Exeter, or the Guardians. He left to attack the Blue Lantern's new home-world, Elpis, though, so she, Kyle, and the Guardians followed along behind him to try to stop him. They all tried to stop him. Carol attacked Relic head on in fact, but he was able to withstand it becasue he felt love for everything, all of creation. Carol and the others didn't give up though, and kept pressing their attack.

In the end though, they couldn't stop him. Relic murdered all the Blue Lanterns and destroyed their battery. Kyle teleported them away to Oa, where they assumed Relic would strike next.

Lights Out

(In the New 52's Green Lantern #24, Green Lantern Corps #24, and Green Lantern: New Guardians #24, Red Lanterns #24, Green Lantern Annual #2, and Green Lantern #25 Dec 2013-Jan 2014)

Carol and company arrive on Oa. They explain to Hal (who's been made leader of the Green Lantern Corps recently) that Relic is on his way. There's not much time to talk about it though before he shows up. They try to reason with him, but it doesn't work, there's a battle, the Green Lantern central battery is blown up, and then so is Oa itself. They leave before it happens, and Carol tells Hal not to blame himself for what happened.

Hal wants to lead his lanterns in another battle against Relic, but Carol talks him out of it, telling him he can't win and he needs to be responsible becasue his corps is counting on him. Then The Predator, Adara, Proselyte, Ion, Ophidian, and The Entity show up and possess Kyle, who takes off for parts unknown.

Carol and Hal chase after him. Carol tries to reach Kyle the same way she did before when he was trapped in a dream world by Relic, but The Predator stops her, saying that it loves her, but what their doing with Kyle is too important to stop.

They aren't able to stop the possessed Kyle and he gets away from them. From there, they go to Ysmault to recruit the Red Lanterns to their cause. They manage to convince them, but don't know where to look for Kyle or Relic. Carol reluctantly confesses that she can find Kyle. Hal understands the implication of that, that if she can do that, then... she must love him (that's part of the way it works for a Star Sapphire). He accuses her of lying to him before about why she broke up with him, that it wasn't becasue of him, it was becasue she had feelings for someone else - Kyle. Carol avoids the conversation by telling him that now isn't the time, that they have to stop Relic. It's the truth of course, so Hal lets it go for the moment and Carol lets loose a heart tether and takes them all to where Kyle is.

They find him and Relic at The Source Wall. There's a battle, Relic is trapped in the wall, and Kyle apparently is trapped on the other side of the wall, inside The Source itself. Carol tried to save him of course, but this time she couldn't - Relic stopped her. Carol and the others think that means he's died, sacrificed himself.

On Mogo, where the Green Lanterns have regrouped with their new power battery (that Mogo made), Hal tells his people about this plan he's got for the Green Lanterns to start policing the other Corps to get rid of their rings. He doesn't explicitly say Star Sapphires will be targeted too, but he does strongly elude to that being a distinct possibility. Carol confronts him about it and basically tells him he's being an arrogant jerk, that the Green Lanterns have messed up and done way too much harm to take the moral high ground. She tells him she's going to report to the Star Sapphire Corps what he's doing and that love will be ready to stand it's ground against him if he decides to make himself their enemy.

She leaves for Zamaron to make her report.

Yesterday's Gone

(In the New 52's Green Lantern: New Guardians #25-26)

On Zamaron she told the Zamarons that she didn't really think Hal would follow through on the letter of his threat, at least not yet, but that they needed to be vigilant in case things with the Green Lanterns got out of hand (again). She also advocated reexamining the way the Star Sapphire Corps operated, to see if they could do better. Before she could really discuss that with them though, she got a call from the Guardians of the Universe who'd been traveling around with Kyle before his death. They told her that she needed to come meet them to 'address a matter of concern regarding lantern Rayner'.

She took off into space right away to go meet them, leaving her discussion with the Zamarons for another time. She was expecting it to be a funeral or something. When she got to the meeting place (a planet named Exuras) though, she found Kyle alive and well. She called him a jerk for not contacting her himself to tell her he was alive. They had a few words, but she ended up hugging him and telling him how happy she was he wasn't dead.

Apparently, she was the only one, besides the Guardians, whom he'd decided to tell he was alive so far. He didn't want it getting back to Hal for some reason (becasue he had 'things to figure out').

After that, she asked why they were on Exuras, and she found out that it was becasue the planet was a paradise that it's people had made into a paradise in only a few years time (before that, they were pretty much an average, not particularity remarkable planet). They even had this amazing technology in the air that protected them from harm and maintained their society. The Guardians wanted to know if this paradise world was a genuine thing, or if there was some dark secret underneath it all. If it was genuine, then they wanted to replicate the success throughout the universe so there would be no need for a Green Lantern Corps.

Carol, Kayle, and a Guardian named Zalla found out that what was going on was that the people of Exuras were manipulating their own timeline, stealing positive outcomes (or 'happy endings') from other timelines. This was obviously not what they were hoping to find - even less so, when one of those other timelines figured out what their 'neighbors' had been doing to them and chose that moment to come through the portal to attack.

Carol and Kyle fought to prevent killing, and ended up stopping the threat, but when it was over, Kyle basically threatened the people of Exuras that if they didn't clean up their act, make reparations, and then destroy their timeline manipulation devise, then he would come back and the consequences wouldn't be pleasant.

In space afterwards, Carol confronted him about it, telling him that laying down edicts like that wasn't what she'd come to expect from him. She asked him if he really thought that what he'd said was the right way to have gone about it. He told her that he couldn't think of a better solution, and flew off, ending the conversation.

Powers & Abilities (2006-present)

As Carol Ferris

Pilot: She's wanted to be a pilot since she was a young girl and has been flying planes ever since she could get a license. She grew up around them and is just about as skilled an aviator as anyone can be.

Business Woman: She's run her family's business, Ferris Aircraft, successfully ever since her father fell sick and left the company to her. Prior to that, she helped her father run the business and learned the trade.

Leadership: She learned to be a leader running Ferris Aircraft for many years, and recently she was named queen of the Star Sapphires by a dying queen Aga'po. Since then, she's often acted as the leader of the Star Sapphire Corps.

Aviation Expertise: While not a trained engineer or designer, she grew up in the business and knows a lot about the technical aspects of aircraft design and manufacture.

As a Star Sapphire

Flight and Space Travel: She can surround herself in an energy field and fly within a planet's atmosphere or through outer space. In space, she can generate an interstellar space warp to travel between solar systems at great speed.

Energy Blasts, Shields, and Constructs: She can fire energy beams with destructive power, generate energy shields for defense, and create energy constructs that can take the form of anything she can imagine. The power of these is proportional to her ability to tap into and believe in the love within her heart.

Sapphire Crystals: She can surround others in a prison of sapphire crystal to show them what they love most, as well as bring out the love that may be buried in their hearts.

Heart Tethers: A heart tether can bring her to someone she loves or guide her to where love is threatened out among the stars.

Teleportation: She is able to teleport herself and others on an interstellar scale, provided she can harness enough love to power it. (Example: She once teleported Hawkgirl and Hawkman from Zamaron back to Earth.)

Healing: She can use the power of love to heal even normally fatal wounds (as she did once for Queen Mera). Conceivably, she could also even bring someone back from the dead (as fer fellow Star Sapphire Corpswoman, Miri Riam, did once).

Heart Prophecies: She can use her power to look into someone's heart and show them a vision of their future.

Emotional Control: Carol, having had more experience with the power of the Star Sapphire than almost anyone save, perhaps, for the Zamarons, has a comparatively high ability to harness love's power and not be carried away or overwhelmed by it as some others may be.

Other Star Sapphire Corps Abilities: Other members of the Star Sapphire Corps have demonstrated a few other abilities, or variations on Carol's established abilities, that Carol herself hasn't yet used. In theory however, she should have the ability to do them as well.

Storyline (1959 - 1987)

The Secret Life of Star Sapphire!

(In Showcase #22-24 and Green Lantern #1-7, 10-13, and 15-16 Sept 1959-Oct 1962)

Carol's father left her in charge of the family company, Ferris Aircraft, while he and his wife took a two year trip around the world. Prior to that, she'd been dating one of their test pilots, Hal Jordan. After, however, she decided, because she was his boss now, she should keep things professional between them and refused to date him any longer.

Around this time, Green Lantern showed up (who was, of course, secretly Hal), and since Carol wouldn't date him as himself any longer, Hal, as Green Lantern, went to a party Carol would be at and proceeded to ask her to dance. He later took her out to a balcony to be alone, where they were about to kiss, when Hal left to stop a missile.

What followed was a halting sort of romance between Carol and Green Lantern, all the while Hal, as himself, was still trying to get Carol to like him as him and not Green Lantern. Carol still liked Hal of course, but still wouldn't date him. At one point, Carol had a dream that Hal and Green Lantern were the same person, and she confronted him about it, but he tricked her into thinking it wasn't true.

This fake love triangle went on until Carol decided to ask Green Lantern to marry her. She had a hard time pinning him down, because Carol had confided her plan to Hal (who'd told her it was a terrible idea and that she should merry him instead). When Carol proposed though, Green Lantern basically ran away.

After that, Carol wasn't so fond of Green Lantern anymore and actually found herself agreeing to date Hal again, even though he was still her employee. Hal often ran off on her, claiming that he had to work (an excuse to go off and be Green Lantern), which Carol, as his boss, couldn't exactly fault, but as his girlfriend grew increasingly annoyed by.

The trouble was, in dating Hal, the positions were sort of reversed. Hal wanted to marry her, but Carol couldn't make herself want to say yes because she still had feelings for Green Lantern. (It should be noted that, though it may seem a bit odd to today's sensibilities, being so singularly focused on marriage in the way Carol and Hal were was more the norm during the late 50s to early 60s than would be usual today.)

One day, when Carol was enjoying herself piloting her airplane, Lady Carol, having been receiving piloting lessons from her boyfriend Hal, her plane was somehow mysteriously forced down to land in the desert. She hit her head in the rough landing, and when she woke moments later, she was confronted by three women in armor and skirts who called her 'your highness' and told her she was their queen. They said they were from the planet Zamaron, which meant the land of lovely women, and that they'd come to Earth to find her.

They explained to her that they were from a world that was tremendously scientifically advanced, populated only by women, and that everyone who lived there was immortal - all save one, their queen. They further explained that, by tradition, their queen was always mortal and always had to look the same, and that Carol looked exactly right to be a match and that they'd been looking all over the galaxy to find her.

They told her that they had to leave Earth right away so that she could be crowned Queen Star Sapphire on Zamaron. Carol protested that she couldn't leave Earth, couldn't be their queen, because she was in love with Green Lantern.

The Zamarons told her that even the lowest Zamaron was superior to any man, that men were weaklings, even Green Lantern who was a champion on her world. Carol asked how they could prove something like that, and they said that she would prove it herself. They gave her the Star Sapphire costume that their queen would wear for hunting and exploration, and gave her the Star Sapphire gem to give her some of the powers she would have if she were to become their queen.

She could fly through the air, and the Zamarons told her that was just the start of what she could do. They said they'd set things up so that, when Carol went into Coast City, Green Lantern would seek her out and try to imprison her but that she must defy him. That, in that way, she would see what they said was true, that men were inferior and that her destiny lay with them.

Unable to help herself for some reason, she felt compelled to do as they asked and head into the city. When she encountered Hal as Green Lantern, she couldn't help but challenge him to a battle, telling him that she was going to break into the museum of ancient glass if he didn't stop her. She passed him by and went to the museum where she took a mirror, though, unbeknownst to Hal, it was a mirror the Zamarons had teleported into place there, so she wasn't actually even stealing anything, just pretending to.

Hal shoots at her with an energy beam, Carol dodged it and fired back with an energy beam of her own, knocking him into a building and knocking him out cold. In her head though, she was trying to stop herself from doing what she was doing, but she didn't seem to be in control of her actions, it was like she was two people at once.

His ring saved him from the impact and he would later wake up to find his attacker gone. Carol's mission satisfied, she'd headed back to the desert to meet the Zamarons again. Back on their space ship, the Zamarons told her that it proved they were right, that men were inferior. Carol asked them to give Green Lantern one more chance to defeat her though, and reluctantly the Zamarons let her have her way.

As Carol left, her thoughts were telling her that she had to defeat Green Lantern, no matter what. The Zamarons sent a telepathic signal to him, telling him where she would be, and, having been showed up once, Hal was eager to have a second battle with her. He waited in ambush and trapped her in a green energy cage, but Carol simply teleported herself free. They fought a duel of energy beams and shields. It seemed they were fairly evenly matched, when Hal detected that there was a transmission being sent to her and surrounded her in an energy field that cut off the transmission. Free of the Zamarons' influence, Carols stopped fighting him and passed out.

Hal dropped the force-field, and the Zamarons teleported her back to their ship. They told her that because she lost, she wasn't worthy to be their queen after all. They took away her memory of their encounter and left. Hal found her and took her back home. He also found a Star Sapphire gem in the desert and took it to the police, not knowing what to make of it.

Star Sapphire Unmasks Green Lantern

(In Green Lantern #17, 20-26 Dec 1962-Jan 1964)

After her experiences with the Zamarons, Carol went about her life as if it had never happened because the Zamarons had erased her memory of those events. She invited Hal over to her place for dinner, but, after she'd made the dinner for him, he made a very bad excuse and left without eating it (so he could go off and be Green Lantern, of course).

Sometime later, there was a mysterious vanishing epidemic in the Coast City area, where in people would get pale and sick and then, poof, disappear into thin air. People were coming down with it left and right, and Carol volunteered at one of the hospitals to help take care of the sick and fading because there weren't enough healthcare workers to go around.

It turned out to be a plot by aliens, and Carol ended up being kidnapped by them too. Green Lantern, with help from the Flash, saved her and everyone else from them and got them back to Coast City. After that, she started to think that maybe she should give it another try with him, even though he'd run away after she'd proposed to him previously.

It was around this time that her parents came back from their around the world trip, and her father was so impressed by how she'd handled the company in his absence that he decided to retire and turn over ownership of Ferris Aircraft fully to her.

She and Green Lantern started dating again - going out to dinner, having a picnic, attending a charity bazaar, etc... She remained friendly with Hal, but had given up on dating him.

At one point though, Carol felt a strong compulsion draw her to seek out the Star Sapphire gem again. She found it, and was once again transformed into Star Sapphire. The Zamarons had left it on Earth because they wanted Carol to have it as a gift, so her life would be better (by their standards, at least). Only if someone called her by her real name, Carol Ferris, would she return to herself.

As Star Sapphire, she set out to beat Green Lantern at his own game, catching criminals, and doing it better than he could - thinking that if she beat him, he'd have to admit defeat and marry her (the goal was her own, the way of thinking was Zamaron). There was a group of robbers called the Copter Gang, who used helicopters and subterfuge to rob banks. They'd never been caught before, and the Coast City police had asked Green Lantern for help. Carol used her Star Sapphire powers to distort Green Lantern's perception of time so he wouldn't show up in time and she'd have time to stop the Copter Gang herself before he could get there.

She made short work of them, turning their bullets into snowflakes, one of the helicopters into a magic carpet, and using her mind over matter powers to capture the other two copters using other similarly inventive means. Green Lantern showed up and demanded to know what she was up to, accusing her of only stopping them to steal their loot for her own.

Carol said that wasn't it, and she'd prove it by taking the thieves into the cops with him. He went along, and, even as the chief of police was congratulating and thanking Carol for her help, Green Lantern protested that she was still wanted for the thefts she committed last time she'd appeared in Coast City. The chief explained that, upon investigation, nothing had actually been stolen, so she wasn't wanted for any crimes after all.

They flew off together when news of an attack by alien creatures on Ferris Aircraft came in. Green Lantern boasted that he would take care of it himself, and that she didn't even need to come along. Carol told him that she was coming along alright, and that when he inevitably failed, she would be there to save the day, and then he'd have to marry her.

Green Lantern tried to stop the creatures (which Carol had secretly created herself using her mind over matter power and the background cosmic radiation that was always present on Earth ñ and, since they were attacking a company she herself owned, and since she was controlling them completely and would stop them before they did any harm at all, again, there was no real crime being committed). She made them so they were living a few seconds ahead in the timeline, so Green Lantern's power seemed to just slide off of them. After a few failed attempts, Green Lantern looked like he might be catching on to the ahead of time element and so might be close to figuring out how to stop them, so Carol stepped in before he could and destroyed the creatures herself, telling him that he'd lost and she'd won and he had to marry her now.

He was close to agreeing, because she'd sapped his will power some, but he resisted one last time, challenging her that if she could remove his mask, only then would he marry her. She agreed, but couldn't do it because he was focusing all of his remaining will power on keeping it in place. Undaunted though, she left, but secretly followed him back to his power battery and took him unawares, unmasking him as Hal Jordan.

Hal, defeated, agreed to marry her. He said though, that it was only fair that he should remove her mask too, if they were going to get married. She let him, he saw that she was Carol, and he spoke her name in surprise, reverting her back to her normal self and causing her to faint and forget what she'd been doing as Star Sapphire.

Hal thought to himself though, that whether it was Hal and Carol, or Green Lantern and Star Sapphire, this meant that they were definitely destined to get married one day.

This photo caught me in a genuinely reflective moment in early June during a rather wonderful day of cross-dressing. I find I am still dealing with my cross-dressing and as the shutter closed I was suddenly in a moment of pure contentment because I was wearing full make-up, a wig, my entire body had been waxed and was smooth and hair free, I had plucked my eyebrows, I had false breasts, I was a wearing a bra and knickers, I was wearing a dress and high heel shoes, my nails were painted and I had attached clip on ear rings and dabbed on perfume. I suddenly found myself wondering about the whole thing, was I doing something wrong? Was I right to give into my desire to dress up as a woman? Why was I doing this? Many thoughts cascaded through my mind at this brief moment in time.

I describe myself as a transvestite and I like calling myself that. I find it gives me a thrill to realise I am a man that loves dressing up as a woman. In fact I think its an amazing thing to experience as a male. I enjoy all the effort and commitment required to try and look female. One of the big appeals is how far dare I push things to attempt to be feminine. As I'm not feminine it is a challenge for me and I'm drawn into it every time I cross-dress.

I'll be honest and admit I wish I was physically feminine and had smooth soft skin and a feminine face and physically smaller and slimmer, I would dearly love to be more feminine than masculine but I'm stuck with what I've got as I'm a man.

I enjoy living as a man the majority of the time but without warning the desire to be female can suddenly crash in and consume me and I could weep with the frustration of not being a woman. It's interesting as I feel I am definitely a transvestite, I like being an occasional cross-dressing male yet, I cannot deny at times the urge to be female is dominant and I desperately wish I was one. This overwhelming emotional desire can have me in its grip me for periods and I now know that eventually it diminishes and I get on with life as a man again. I feel there is an element of transsexualism within me as I do love being a woman when I dress up as one.

I am always aware though I am just dressing up and acting know matter how much effort I put into it, I'm still a man under the wig, make-up and dress. Funnily though, that very knowledge thrills and excites me, I genuinely like the idea I'm posing as a woman and it is all an illusion. Of course for me personally I have no real belief I succeed in my female illusion but I adore the experiences and gain a lot of reward from spending time in my female alter-ego. It works rather nicely on several levels for me, emotionally I love it, I enjoy the delight of having a shaved hair free body, I absolutely love wearing make-up...mascara, lipstick, eye-liner...ooh, such heaven! Having tucked genitals, false breasts and wearing lingerie and dresses and skirts is again such a delight and utterly wonderful and as for high heels, I just feel fabulous when I slip them on.

I know I look like a parody of a woman and not like a real woman but I do find an emotional comfort once I'm transformed to the best of my ability and I don't feel unsettled by my swapping gender in my head and acting more female. I've said it before but I would like to experience some time in the role of a woman. It may sound homosexual but I would like to be a female companion out for dinner or a wee drink with a man and I would play the part one hundred percent as a female. I'm not attracted to men at all but the desire to pass a woman and spend time as a female makes me feel such an experience would make my female illusion feel like it's working. It sounds harsh but the man would merely be a prop for my performance. I do see my Helene persona as more of a character acting performance as I ultimately know I live as a man. I've said many times I'm also frustrated actor at heart and the idea of playing a woman convincingly really holds great appeal and also the transsexual element within me feels at home with the scenario I outlined.

What I am attempting to to do, or more accurately become is an heterosexual woman. I know it's an act but I would love to play the role and see if I could carry it off convincingly. I would love to be referred to as 'she', 'her' and perceived as a lady...I would love it!

My biggest ambition is to one day master the ability of completely swapping gender and acting naturally as a woman. I can already do the man thing but I am intrigued to see if I can also be a woman when I become Helene. I lack the self belief just now and I am not that confident in my skills and abilities so much work is needed. I have been accused of being homosexual for expressing similar ambitions for my female persona in the past but I compare myself more to a straight male actor playing a gay man. In my case I'm a straight male playing a female character and I want to play the role realistically. I need to become the woman I am portraying to make the experience feel real to me.

There is of course a flip side to all of this as part of me says 'Really? Maybe you do have homosexual tendencies'. But really I don't quite feel that is correct for me. I just feel what I seek is when I'm a man then I'm a man but as I have an emotional need to feel I can be female now and again then it is natural that when I become a woman then I am a woman. Is it possible to be heterosexual in both genders when one of them, the female, is just an illusion because I'm really a man? I am excited by this as I believe one can be and the sheer daring and adventure of that is both thrilling and a personal challenge I'm attracted to exploring.

I do get frustrated by many in the transgender world being too simplistic and forcing things into black and white explanations, I think as transgender people things are very complex for us in many areas and this is not just about ones sexuality. For example the age old complaint of women can wear male clothing and nobody questions their choices but men cant wear women's clothes without being seen as odd does not quite hold water. When women wear male clothing they usually still look unmistakably like women, its rare they are perceived as being male. Also, they are not trying to look like men. However, when men dress in women's clothing we do take it a lot further as we wear make-up, wigs with female hair styles, add breasts and some of us shave our legs, chest and arms and tuck away our male genitals and wear female underwear...in short we are not just wearing female clothes in our case we are actually trying to look like women, it's quite a different approach to women wearing male clothing. There is a lot more going on in for cross-dressers than just clothes and make-up, we definitely take it emotionally and physically into different area, when we cross-dress many of us desire to look feminine and to look like women.

A friend recently asked me outright why I dressed up as a woman, it was curiosity not a hostile question. I found it was impossible to give him a simple answer as my own desire to seems to have several different motivations driving it. If I were simplistic about it I could say it's because I really enjoy it and I admit I really do! Yet within me are the things I described earlier in this musing and at its core I do have part of me that wishes I was indeed female yet the majority of my being likes my life as a man. I think it comes down to each of us who engage in transvestism has personal urges and desires and some are common but many are individual. I like dressing up and acting the part yet I know I would also like to be that women for real. Part of me believes I can be an heterosexual woman and when I am dressed as Helene I can talk reasonably comfortably about men and enjoy their attention. As I admitted I would be thrilled to actually play the role one hundred percent and be seen with a man and this leads onto what else would I do? Would I allow myself to be kissed? Would I have sex with a man? The reality I feel confident about it is I would not get intimate with a man as I'm married and loyal to my wife so it is unlikely anything I've outlined would ever happen. However, I like to question myself as I can delude myself and I ask if I were not in a relationship how far would I go? I do have a deep curiosity to see how much of a woman I can be and act as so maybe I would allow those kisses and enjoy flirting with a man. I will admit when I am dressed as a woman I am thrilled if a man desires me or finds me attractive as a woman. I cannot quite see that I really look female enough but it has happened and I was definitely thrilled by it.

I remember once, back in 2002, I hired a make-up artist to help me learn about applying make-up as I was keen to look good in make-up...ha! Some hope, I told you I was delusional. He told me once I was transformed into Helene that I was behaving like a man and very self conscious. I said something unconvincing in reply and he said look you've gone to all this effort so best become the female you are presenting as. He was right, I realised my own inhibitions and concerns were holding my female persona back, I needed to shake them off and move forward and embrace my female self. That meant I had to swap genders in my head and become a woman. That thought terrified me for my nearly a decade. It is only in the last few years I managed to attempt this and really this is thanks to a few years ago the tireless encouragement of Michele Bennet and in recent years the most wonderful support and encouragement ever from the lovely Pamela Lennon in Ireland that has revolutionised my mental attitude to cross-dressing and trying to fulfil my dreams. I owe those wonderful ladies a lot and I am still amazed they persisted with me. I confess I adore Pamela as she has enlightened me and been incredibly influential and has empowered me to true liberation as Helene. When others attacked me last year it was Pamela that supported me and never lost heart in encouraging my dream and rekindled my belief in Helene as I nearly gave up on my female self at one point.

Being a transvestite is an emotive experience and full of uncertainty and one can be a bit sensitive about things relating to it. It is a complex thing to live with and though it comes with incredible experiences, delights and joy it is for me always tinged with concerns, doubts and a high degree of guilt, fear and uncertainty, it's all part of the heady mix that goes with the knowledge and activity of being a transvestite.

I really don't have much to say about today except

that it has been a long day, a very, very long day.

and I've been wanting to take a picture here for weeks and finally got around to doing it today.

SOOC except for the crop XD (I'm getting better at this!)

Secret Number Two: I have an obsession with A Great and Terrible Beauty, Harry Potter, and Wuthering Heights (Which I started for the fourth time today XD)

Several thousand are in comments.

This looks amazing here.

And now I have to go do homework. =P

Hello everyone, and welcome back to 'Weekly Recommendations'! I got some good for you guys today, so let's get started!

Skyfall: So in light of Spectre coming out today, (I'm going to go see it right after I post this!) I thought I would review my favorite Bond film, Skyfall! Now this movie has the perfect balance of all Bond movies, action, drama, a few jokes here and there, and a darker tone. If you were to check out a Bond film before seeing Spectre, I'd say you should see Skyfall!

Super Mario 3D Land: Now I'm not a huge fan of Super Mario 3D World because it was basically a copy of this game but with 4 players. Now I figured out the reason why I like this game, but not 3D World. When I look for a 3D Mario game, I like to explore like Sunshine and Galaxy, but these games is just go to the flagpole. But I like this game is because this style works in the portable form. I don't want to go on grand adventures on my 3DS, I it when things are pretty simple, when I'm on the go, do you guys get what I'm saying? Anyways, this game's always fun to pick up when you're bored on a road trip or something.

Well that's all for this week folks, tune in next week for more great recommendations, and if you have any suggestions for themes, leave them in the comments below!

When flowing water...meets with obstacles on its path, a blockage in its journey, it pauses. It increases in volume and strength, filling up in front of the obstacle and eventually spilling past it...

Do not turn and run, for there is nowhere worthwhile for you to go. Do not attempt to push ahead into the danger... emulate the example of the water: Pause and build up your strength until the obstacle no longer represents a blockage.

"And at the end of the day, there's always a disappointing football match."

But before then, there's a whole day to get through.

Neither of us had any ill effects from our jabs on Friday, sore arm notwithstanding. So it meant the day was all ours to do with what we wanted.

Saying that, Jools didn't feel well enough for churchcrawling, but hunter/gathering at Tesco was fine.

So, after coffee we drove to Whitfield and after filling the car with unleaded, we go to the store to buy stuff for the weekend, and the final things for Christmas, which means that we just have veg to get as everything else is either bought or ordered.

I buy a gift for the charity Christmas box, so that poor children will have something. I bought a Hey Dugee singing stick that the child will love and their parents will hate. Does this make me a bad or good person?

Maybe both.

Back home to pack the shopping away, have fruit for breakfast, followed by bacon butties and huge brews.

Although Tesco had most things, there was no fresh fruit other really than bananas, apples. And for the second week, bacon, especially smoked bacon was in very short supply.

But we dine well on our bacon butties, then, Jools confirmed she was not going out, so I could visit anywhere.

Within reason.

Well. Most churches in the area I wanted to visit or revisit I have done these past few weeks.

One I hadn't gone back to was Lydden. Its a small place, but its a short drive there, so could be a stopover on the way to somewhere else.

I go down Coldred Hill, then along to the church.

It was a glorious day, I mean no clouds, clean, sparking air, but cold and frosty.

The church was unlocked, cold by welcoming.

As expected, there wasn't much I hadn't recorded, and no glass to use the big lens on. So, I go round to recrod everything, then on to the next stop.

Bekesbourne.

I hadn't called the keyholder, but she only lives opposite the church, so not that much of a hassle to walk over the small bridge over the dry Nailbourne.

I reach the church, park outside and walk to the old palace.

I rang the bell. Dogs barked. A lot. But no one answered.

Another time, then.

Three miles along the Nailbourne is Littlebourne where the bournes changes its name to the Little Stour and flows all the time. There is a church there and I can't remember when I was there last.

I drive round the village, find the church on Church Street. Where else to keep your church?

Again, it was open, but having no real memory of this, it was good to go in again and take lots and lots of shots, mainly of the large number of Victorian windows.

Once done, I decide there were no other churches to be done that day, athough I go do Wingham and Ash again, there's plenty of other occasions to do those. But it was a ten minute drive from Preston, and I noticed during the week we were out of sausages, so decide to go in and see if they had any.

And good job I did, as they were down to a few bits and pieces, but had some venison and cranberry bangers, so I get five pounds. Also, they were selling of these very large chickens, perfect for the late Christmas dinner we're planning when Jen comes back on January 24th, so £15 gets that and it can go in the freezer.

By which time it was lunch. We have gingerbread, or mixed spice bread. Two large stars, so I pull of each point and dunk it in a coffee, so soft enough in the end.

And amazingly, football is back. In fact, below the Championship, it never stopped during the World Cup, the the Prem and Championship did, and Norwich were to play for the first time in a month, away at Swansea.

So I could watch the early game, Portugal v Morocco as well as follow Norwich.

Good news in both games, as Norwich scored in the first minute then hung on to claim all three points, and Morocco knocked out Portugal; Ronaldo, Pepe and all.

There were tears at the end. Bitter ones from Ron and tears of joy for the rest of us.

And then, France v England.

The villages 13th century church, St Vincent of Saragossa, is thought to have been founded by the monks of St Augustine's Abbey in Canterbury and contains an ancient wall painting depicting Saint Christopher, patron saint of travellers. The church also has what is reckoned to be one of the finest collection of stained glass windows designed by Nathaniel Westlake in the country. Nathaniel Westlake was a leading designer of the Gothic Revival movement in England.

Work done in 1995 by experts from the V&A Museum established that he designed each of the windows over the long period of his work with the Company, thus giving an outstanding example of the development of his style.

The Church has a six-bell peal, the oldest bell dating back to 1597, the newest 1899.

-----------------------------------------

LOCATION: Situated at about 40 feet above O.D. on Head brickearth (over Upper Chalk). A little to the west of the river Little Stour. Littlebourne Court, originally belonging to St. Augustine’s Abbey, lies immediately to the north-west. Wickhambreaux and Ickham churches are not far away to the north and east.

DESCRIPTION: As with many North-East Kent churches, this church points south-east, and it is first documented in Domesday Book, with the eastern three-quarters of the nave of the present church presumably being, in part, of an early Norman date. The only visible evidence for the earliest structure, however, is outside the south-west corner of the nave. Here one can see reused Roman bricks, and the original steep slope of the very early 13th century south aisle (continuing the line of the nave roof). The nave must be earlier than this, so is at least 12th century in date. It is also worth noting the very rare dedication, to St Vincent.

The whole of the south arcade for the south aisle still survives in its very early 13th century form, with four pointed arches (that on the west is smaller). The arches have continuous flat

the piers themselves. All the dressings are in Caen stone.

Later in the 13th century a large new chancel was built, probably at about the time (c. 1245) when St Augustine’s Abbey were endowing the new vicarage there, after the appropriation. The chancel has four tall lancets on either side, and an eastern triplet which has internal shafting on the jambs, and deeply moulded rere-arches and hood-moulds. All the other lancets have plain rere-arches, and all the chancel windows sit internally on a filleted roll-moulding which steps up at the east end and runs under the triplet. There is a piscina on the south-east with a pointed arch (with hood) over it, and bar-stopped chamfers on the sides. On the north-west side of the chancel is a small doorway, which was restored in the 19th century. The chancel was fairly heavily restored on the outside in the 19th century (‘1865’ on one of the rain-water hoppers), but much of its original coursed whole flints are still visible, as well as some of the rows of putlog holes. The chancel also has a separate roof, with a west gable, but this was rebuilt completely in c. 1865.

At about the same time as the chancel was being rebuilt in the early to mid-15th century, a very plain tower was added at the west end (It is similar to the neighbouring tower at Ickham). This has a tall simple pointed arch (with flat chamfers and abaci) into the nave, and on the west is a simple pointed doorway with flat chamfers and a tall lancet above it. The tower is unbuttressed, and has four more wide restored lancets (one in each face) in the top (belfry) stage. Externally the tower has the remains of its original plastering over coursed flint with side-alternate Caenstone quoins. On top of the tower is a later medieval (14th/15th century) brooch spire (now covered in slates).

The tower was restored in 1899, and the bells were rehung in a new timber and cast iron frame. There are now six bells, dated 1597,1610, 1650 and three of 1899 (said to have been recast from two late medieval ones). Glynne tells us that there was an organ in a west gallery under the tower, but this was removed during the restoration. A shed (now 2 cloakrooms) was also added to the north side of the tower in c. 1899.

A small Lady Chapel may have been added to the north-east side of the nave in the later 13th century as shown by its two light trefoil-headed (with circular opening above) east window (it has an internal rere-arch). All other evidence for this above ground was removed by the early 14th and early 19th century re-buildings (see below). The Lady Chapel is first documented in the late 15th century, but most churches acquired a separate Lady Chapel in N.W. Kent in the 13th century.

In the early 14th century both the south and north aisles had their outer walls rebuilt. On the south this was a continuous heightening and rebuild for the full length of the nave (with the evidence for the earlier lean-to aisle surviving in the west wall, as shown above). There is however still a later 13th century lancet in the centre of the south wall, with a probable later 13th century south doorway next to it (though completely rebuilt externally in the 19th century). The other aisle windows are all, however, 2 - light early 14th century traceried windows, and the gables and separate pitched roof over the aisle is also perhaps 14th century (it is still hidden under a flat plaster ceiling). In the south aisle wall are some reused Reigate stone fragments, and the large later south buttress has Ragstone quoins and reused Reigate And Caenstone fragments (and heavy 19th century knapped flintwork). Some Purbeck marble is reused in the wall west of the south porch. This aisle also has a small square-topped piscina in its south-east corner, and a very small stoup just inside the door on the east.

Hasted tells us that ‘a few years ago the north isle fell down, when there were some curious paintings discovered by the breaking of the plaster from the walls. This aisle was immediately rebuilt’. It is however, clear from the present remains (and from the Petrie water-colour view), that the church was again rebuilt in the early 19th century, with the present flatish 4-bay crown/king post nave roof and lath and plaster ceiling. The two dormers on the south side of the nave roof are presumably of the same date as is the shallow-pitched shed-roof over the north aisle, and the wooden post and two semi-circular arches into the north aisle. On the north-west side of the nave one can see an infilled pointed arch (? of chalk) with abaci, suggesting that there was originally a 13th century 3-bay north aisle (and Lady Chapel). The scar for the south-west corner of this aisle which did not continue to the west end of the nave, is just visible, and the late 18th century collapse was clearly at the west end of this aisle, which was not rebuilt (the other aisle-wall window being reset in the nave wall). The north wall of the north aisle must have been rebuilt in the early 14th century with buttresses and new two-light traceried windows. There may have been a north door here.

Only the chancel was heavily restored in the later 19th century (1865) with a new south porch in 1896, replacing a brick one, according to Glynne. A porch is documented from at least 1505.

BUILDING MATERIALS: (Incl. old plaster, paintings, glass, tiles etc.):

The main local material is flint, and whole flints, in courses, are used for all the early work with dressings of Caenstone. Some Reigate stone is then used in the 13th century, with Kent Rag for the quoins in the early 14th century. There is also some reused Purbeck marble in the walls, and Bathstone is used for the late 19th century restorations. Hasted mentions ‘the remains of good painted glass’ in the chancel side lancets and ‘seven sacraments, etc. handsomely done, with rich borders’ in the eastern lancets, ‘but they have been some few years since removed’ (op. cit. below, p.155). Also he mentions armorial glass in the S.E. window of the south aisle, and other now-vanished glass is known from the church - see C.R. Councer (below).

EXCEPTIONAL MONUMENTS IN CHURCH: None, but remains of medieval wall-painting on the north side of the nave, at the west end. Also a leger slab, with a small brass inscription in it, dated 1585, in front of the chancel arch. Also some early 19th century Benefaction boards on the west wall of the south aisle. Most of the furnishings in the church date from the restoration of 1864-4, or later.

CHURCHYARD AND ENVIRONS:

Size & Shape: Large north-south rectangular area around church, with large extensions to north (20th century) and south (19th century).

Condition: Good

Building in churchyard or on boundary: Lych Gate of timber (1892) to the south. Very large c. early 14th century great barn of Littlebourne Court (172ft long) runs along west boundary of the churchyard.

Ecological potential: ? Yes. The burial under a ‘great palm’ (ie. Yew Tree) in the churchyard is mentioned in a will of 1542, and there are still some quite large Yews north of the church.

Late med. Status: Vicarage endowed in 1245 with a house, some tithes, etc. A chaplain had to be found to celebrate weekly in Garrington Chapel.

Patron: St. Augstine’s Abbey, Canterbury (and alienated to the Italian monastery of Monte Mirteto in Italy, 1224). In 1538 it went to the crown, and then on to the Dean and Chapter of Canterbury in 1541.

Other documentary sources: Hasted IX (1800) , 155-8. There is much documentation in Thorne’s Chronicle and the ‘Black Book’ of St Augustine’s. Testamenta Cantiana (E. Kent, 1907), 196-8 mentions burial in the churchyard from 1473, the church porch (1501), various ‘lights’, the altar of Our Lady (1499+), reparation of the altars of St James and St Nicholas (1473), for paving between the chancel and the west door (1419).

SURVIVAL OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL DEPOSITS:

Inside present church: ? Good.

Outside present church: ? Good, though there is a large soil build-up around the church, and a brick-lined drainage gulley (up to 2ft deep) has been made all around the church.

RECENT DISTURBANCES/ALTERATIONS:

To structure: None, but chancel stalls brought from St Johns, Herne Bay in 1974, and organ in north aisle from Holy Cross, Canterbury in 1972.

To floors: Brick floor relaid at east end of S. aisle - Oct 1991.

Quinquennial inspection (date/architect): Feb. 1990 Maureen O’Connor.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL ASSESSMENT:

A Norman nave was given a lean-to south aisle and perhaps extended to the west in the very early 13th century, with a plain west tower being added soon after. The chancel was rebuilt (and greatly enlarged) in the mid 13th century, and there was probably also a Lady Chapel and nave north aisle by the later 13th century. The outer walls of the aisles were rebuilt in the early 14th century. A timber spire was also built. In the late 18th century the west end of the north aisle collapsed and this was rebuilt along with the nave roof, etc. again in the early 19th century. Chancel restored in 1865, and west tower in 1899 (with rehung bells). A new south porch was built in 1896.

The wider context: One of a group of churches belonging to St Augustine’s Abbey, Canterbury with major rebuildings in the 13th and early 14th centuries.

LITTLEBORNE

LIES the next parish south-eastward from Stodmarsh, taking its name from its situation close to the stream which bounds the eastern part of it, and at the same time to distinguish it from the other parishes of the name of Borne in the near neighbourhood of it.

There is but one borough in this parish, called the borough of Littleborne.

Littleborne extends to the skirt of the beautiful and healthy parts of East Kent, and verging farther from the large levels of marsh land which lie near the Stour, quits that gloomy aspect of ill health so prevalent near them, and here begins to assume one more cheerful, pleasant and healthy; and Twyne tells us, (fn. 1) that it was allotted by the abbot and convent of St. Augustine's, who possessed the manor, for the plantation of vines. The village is built on the high road leading from Canterbury to Sandwich and Deal, at the eastern boundary of the parish, adjoinining to the Little Stour, and consists of about forty houses. The church stands at a small distance from it, having the courtlodge close to it, with the parsonage at a small distance. This parish extends northward as far as the Stour, opposite to Westbere, in which part of it however, there is but a small quantity of marsh-land, near which is an estate called Higham, which antiently was owned by a family of that name. Above the hill, south-eastward from hence, there is a great deal of woodland, and among it a tract of heathy rough land, belonging to the archbishop, called Fishpool-downs, through which the road leads to Wickham. At the bottom of Fishpool hill is the valley called the Ponds, now entirely covered with wood, part of which is in this parish. The ponds were supplied from a spring called Arrianes well, probably for Adrian's well, and were of a considerable size and depth, made for the supply of the convent of St. Augustine, the owners of them, with fish for their refectory, the sides of them now equally thick with coppice wood, were antiently a vineyard. These woods continue from hence adjoining the high road towards the village in great quantities, much of which belongs to the archbishop, and are intermixed with a great deal of rough bushy ground. The lands in this parish are in general very poor and gravelly, but towards Wickham they are much more fertile both for corn and hops, of which there are several plantations. This parish extends across the river eastward towards the hill, and takes in great part of Lower Garwinton, and part of the house, and some little land of Upper Garwinton within it, which is entirely separated from the rest of it by the parish of Adisham intervening.

Polygonatum scalacæci, Solomon's seal; grows plentifully on Fishpool-hill in this parish.

A fair is held here on the 5th of July, for toys and pedlary.

In the year 690, Widred, king of Kent, gave to the monastery of St. Augustine, in pure and perpetual alms, five plough-lands called Litleborne, on condition of their remembring of him in their prayers and solemn masses. And in the year 1047, king Edward the Consessor gave another plough-land here, which consisted of the estates of Bourne, Dene, and Wiliyington, to archbishop Eadsin, free from all service, except. the trinoda necessitas, and he bestowed it on that monastery. After which the manor of Little borne continued in the possession of the abbey to the time of taking the survey of Domesday, in which it is thus entered under the general title of the land of the church of St. Augustine:

In Dunamesfort hundred, the abbot himself holds, Liteburne, which is taxed at seven sulings. The arable land is twelve carucates. In demesne there are three carucates, and thirty-five villeins, with fourteen cottagers having six and an half. There is a church, and thirtyeight acres of meadow. Wood for the pannage of four hogs. In the time of king Edward the Consessor it was worth twenty-five pounds, afterwards twenty pounds, now thirty-two pounds. Of this manor the bishop of Baieux has in his park, as much as is worth sixty shillings.

After this the abbot and convent's possessions here were increased by several gifts and purchases of different parcels of land. (fn. 2)

King Henry III. in his 54th year, granted to the abbot and convent free-warren in all their demesne lands of Littleborne, among others. In the 7th year of king Edward II.'s reign, anno 1313, in the iter of H. de Stanton and his sociates, justices itinerant, the abbot, upon a quo warranto, claimed and was allowed in this manor among others, free warren in all his demesne lands of it, and view of frank-pledge, and other liberties therein-mentioned, in like manner as has been already mentioned before, in the description of the manors of Sturry and Stodmarsh. (fn. 3) By a register of the monastery of about this time, it appears, that this manor had then in demesne the park of Trendesle. In the 10th year of king Edward III. Solomon de Ripple being custos, or bailiff of this manor, made many improvements here, and purchased more lands in it, all the buildings of it being in a manner wholly re-built and raised from the ground, with much cost, by him. In king Richard II.'s reign, the abbot's manor of Littleborne was valued at 23l. 8s. 6d. the admeasurement of the lands being 505 acres. After which this manor continued with the monastery till its dissolution, anno 30 Henry VIII. when it came into the king's hands, and remained in the crown till king Edward VI. in his 1st year, granted the manor and manor-house, with all lands and appurtenances, and a water-mill lately belonging to the abbot and convent of St. Augustine, to the archbishop, among other premises, in exchange for the manor of Mayfield, &c. parcel of the possessions of whose see it still remains, the archbishop being the present owner of it. The manor, with the profits of courts, royalties, &c. the archbishop keeps in his own hands; but the demesnes have been from time to time demised on a beneficial lease. The family of Denne have been for more than a century lessees of it, who now reside in the court-lodge.

On the abolition of episcopacy, after the death of king Charles I. this manor was sold by the state to Sir John Roberts and John Cogan, the latter of whom, by his will in 1657, gave his moiety of it to the mayor and aldermen of Canterbury, for the benefit of six poor ministers widows (for whose use he had at the same time demised his dwelling-house in Canterbury, now called Cogan's hospital. But the manor of Littleborne, on the restoration in 1660, returned again to the see of Canterbury.

The manor of Wolton, alias Walton, lies in the southern part of this parish, adjoining to the precinct of Well, and was antiently possessed by a family who took their name from it, one of whom, John, son of John de Wolton, held it at the latter end of king Henry III.'s reign. But this family became extinct here before the reign of king Edward III. in the 20th year of which, Roger de Garwinton held it by knight's service, (fn. 4) in whose descendants it continued till it passed into the family of Petit, of Shalmsford, who held it of the abbot of St. Augustine's by the like service, in which name and family it continued till it was at length alienated to Sir Henry Palmer, of Bekesborne, whose descendant of the same name passed it away by sale to Sir Robert Hales, of Bekesborne, in whose descendants it continued down to Sir Philip Hales, bart. of Howlets, who in 1787 alienated this manor to Isaac Baugh, esq. of Well, the present owner of it.

Wingate, alias Lower Garwington, in a manor, which lies on the other or eastern side of the river, adjoining to Ickham, taking the former of those names from a family, who were owners of it in Henry III.'s reign, and held it by knight's service of the abbot and convent of St. Augustine. In which reign Simon de Wingate held it as above-mentioned, but before the 20th year of King Edward III. this name was extinct here, and Thomas de Garwinton then held this estate, lying in Wingate, held of the abbot by the like tenure. (fn. 5) In the descendants of Thomas de Garwington, who resided at their mansion and manor, since called Upper Garwinton, adjoining to it, seems to have continued some time, and from them, as well as to distinguish it from that, to have taken the name of Wingate, alias Lower Garwinton. After this family had quitted the possession of it, the Clyffords appear from different records to have become owners of it, and after them the Sandfords, and it appears by the escheat rolls, that Humphrey Sandford died possessed of it in the 14th year of king Henry VII. and that Thomas Sandford was his son and heir. After which it came into the hands of the crown, for king Henry VIII. in his 30th year, granted the manors of Wingate and Garwinton to Sir Christopher Hales, then master of the rolls. He left three daughters his coheirs, who became jointly, entitled to it, and on the division of their estates it was allotted to the youngest daughter Mary, who entitled her husband Alexander Colepeper, esq. to it, in which name it continued till the 22d of queen Elizabeth, when it was passed away by sale to Thomas Fane, esq. whose son Francis, earl of Westmoreland, sold it to William Prude, alias Proude, esq. who being a lieutenant-colonel in the army, was slain at the siege of Maestricht in 1632, having devised this estate in tail male to his eldest surviving son Serles Prude, who died in 1642, leaving only two daughters his coheirs, upon which it came to his next brother William, who left an only daughter Dorothy, and she, the entail being barred, carried it first in marriage to Nethersole, by whom she had no issue, and secondly to Christopher May, esq. of Rawmere, in Suffex, whose only daughter and heir Anne, entitled her husband William Broadnax, esq. of Godmersham, to the possession of it. His son Thomas Changed his name, first to May and then to Knight, and died possessed of this manor in 1781, leaving an only son Thomas Knight, esq. of Godmersham, who in the year 1785 exchanged it for other lands in Crundal with Thomas Barret, esq. of Lee, the present owner of it.

Upper Garwinton is a manor, which lies adjoining to that last-described, southward, at the boundary of this parish, next to Adisham, in which parish part of the mansion of it stands, being written in the survery of Domesday, Warwintone, one of the many instances in that book of the mistakes of the Norman scribes. It was, after the conquest, parcel of those possessions with which the Conqueror enriched his half-brother Odo, the great bishop of Baieux and earl of Kent, and was exchanged by him for other lands with the abbot of St. Augustine's, accordingly it is thus entered in that record, under the general title of the land of the church of St. Augustine:

The abbot himself holds Warwintone, and the bishop of Baieux gave it to him in exchange of his park. It was taxed at half a suling and forty-two acres of land. The arable land is one carucate, and there is in demesne, with three cottagers, and sixteen acres of meadow. In the time of king Edward the Confessor it was worth four pounds, and afterwards forty shillings, now four pounds. This manor Edric de Sbern Biga held, and now Radulf holds it of the abbot.

Whether this description extended to the last-described manor of Wingate, is uncertain, though most probably, as both were held of the abbot by knight's service, it was comprehended in it. However that may be, this manor of Garwintone, called as above, erroneously, in Domesday, Warwintone, was held of the abbot by a family who took their surname from it; one of whom, Richard de Garwynton, resided here at the latter end of king Henry II.'s reign, and had a chapel at his mansion here; and in 1194, the abbot granted to him and his heirs, to have the divine office celebrated for three days in a week in this chapel by the priest of Littleborne. (fn. 6) His descendant Thomas Garwinton was possessed of this manor and several other estates in this part of the county, in the 20th year of king Edward III. whose great-grandson William Garwynton dying S. P. Joane his kinswoman, married to Richard Haut, was anno II Henry IV. found to be his heir not only to this manor, but to much other lands in these parts, and their son Richard Haut having an only daughter and heir Margery, she carried this manor in marriage to William Isaac, esq. of Patrixborne, whose descendant Edward Isaac, at his death, gave this manor to his two daughter by his second wife, viz. Mary, married to Thomas Appleton, esq. of Suffolk, and Margaret, to John Jermye, second son of Sir John Jermye, of the same county, and they seem to have shared this manor between them. Thomas Appleton sold his share afterwards to Anthony Parker, who with Isaac Jermye, eldest son of John above-mentioned, joined in the sale of the entire see of it to Sir Henry Palmer, of Howlets, and he by his will in 1611, devised it to his nephew John Goodwyn, whose heirs some time afterwards passed it away by sale to George Curteis, esq. afterwards knighted, and of Otterden, and he alienated it to Sir Robert Hales, of Bekesborne, in whose descendants it continued down to Sir Philip Hales, bart. of Howlets, who in 1787, passed it away by sale to Isaac Baugh, esq. the present owner of it.

Charities.

John Dorrante, of Bekesborne, yeoman, in 1560, gave by will, to discharge the poor from the assessments of the church, the overplus to be paid to the most antient poor of the parish, the sum of 3s, 6d. on Palm Sunday and the Monday before Penticost; and 21s. 6d. on Christmas-day yearly, out of the house and lands called Church-house, now vested in Mr. Peter Inge.

Henry Sloyden, of Wickhambreaux, in 1568, gave by will to the poor of this parish and of Wickham, six acres and a half of land, called Church-close, to be divided between them yearly, now of the annual produce of 3l. 9s. 9d.

Sir Henry Palmer, by his will in 1611, gave 10s. to be paid yearly out of his manor of Welle, for the use of the poor.

James Franklyn, by will in 1616, gave to the parishes of Littleborne, Chistlet, and Hoathe, in Reculver, 5l. each, to be employed in a stock for the poor. This 5l. is now increased to 11l. this interest of which being 8s. 93frac34;d. is distributed among the poor in general.

Valentine Norton, gent. by his will, was a benefactor to the poor; but there are no particulars further known of it.

The poor constantly relieved are about fifty, casually thirtyfive.

This parish is within the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the diocese of Canterbury, and deanry of Bridge.

The church, which is dedicated to St. Vincent, consists of three isles and a chancel, having at the west end a low pointed steeple, in which hang five bells. The church is kept very neat. It is a good sized building, and is handsomely ceiled. The chancel is lostly, and has four narrow lancet windows on each side, and three at the end; in the former are the remains of good painted glass, and in the latter some years ago were the seven sacraments, &c. very handsomely done, with rich borders, but they have been some few years since removed. In it is a memorial for George I'anns, curate, obt. 1699. In the middle isle are several memorials for the family of Denne, for many descents lessees of the court-lodge, and descended from those of Dennehill, in Kingston, In the south-east window of the south isle is a saint holding a shield of arms, in front, Gules, three cocks, argent, being the arms of Bunington, on the lest side a moon, on the right a sun, all very well done; and there were formerly in one of the windows, the arms of Higham, argent, a lion passant regardant, between six cross-croslets fitchee, sable, impaling Gallaway, ermine, three lozenges, gules. A few years ago the north isle fell down, when there were some curious paintings discovered, by the breaking of the plaister from the walls. This isle was immediately rebuilt. In the church-yard, at the north-west part of it, are several tombs and head stones of the family of Denne before- mentioned.

¶The church of Littleborne was antiently appendant to the manor, part of the possessions of the abbot and convent of St. Augustine, and continued so till the year 1224, when Robert de Bello being chosen abbot, and finding much difficulty in obtaining the pope's benediction, to facilitate it, gave this church to the monastery of St. Mary de Monte Mirteto, in Italy, to which the pope, in 1241, appropriated it. Immediately after which, this parsonage, so appropriated, was demised to the abbot and convent of St. Augustine, in perpetual ferme, at the clear yearly sum of thirty marcs. (fn. 7) Four years after which, anno 1245, archbishop Stratford endowed the vicarage of it, the advowson of which was reserved to the abbot and convent of St. Augustine, when he decreed, that the vicarage should be endowed with a mansion, the tithes of filva cæ dua, of hay, and in three acres of arable, one acre of meadow, and in the receipt of three marcs and an half in money from the religious yearly, and in the tithes of flax, hemp, ducks, calves, pigeons, bees, milk, milkmeats, mills, wool, pigs, and in all oblations and other small tithes belonging to the church; and that the vicar should serve the church in divine rites, and find one chaplain to celebrate weekly in the chapel of Garwyntone, and to find bread, wine, and tapers, for celebrating divine rites in the church. Which endowment was afterwards, in 1370, certified by inspeximus, by archbishop Wittlesey. In which state this church and advowson remained till the final dissolution of the abbey of St. Augustine, in the 30th year of Henry VIII. when they came into the king's hands, and the king, in his 33d year, settled both, by his dotation-charter, on his new-erected dean and chapter of Canterbury, with whom they continue at this time. The parsonage has been from time to time let on a beneficial lease, Mr. Thomas Holness being the present lessee of it, but the advowson of the vicarage the dean and chapter retain in their own hands.

The vicarage of Littleborne is valued in the king's books at 7l. 19s. 10d. but the yearly tenths taken are sixteen shillings, the sum total being erroneonsly cast up in the king's books at eight pounds. The antient pension of 3l. 17s. 4d. from the abbey of St. Augustine's, is yearly received by the vicar out of the exchequer; the demesne lands of the court-lodge pay no greattithes, and the archbishop's woods in his own occupation pay none. In 1588 here were one hundred and fifty communicants; in 1640 the same, when it was valued at thirty-five pounds. It has been augmented by the dean and chapter with fifty pounds per annum.

The chapel of Lukedale, in the precinct of Well, was once esteemed as within the bounds of this parish, of which more may be seen herefter, under Ickham, to which parish Well is now annexed.

Genau in diesem Moment kam Marie vorbei.

Today and over the following days, I invite you to take a closer look at a very simple and unadorned, yet beautiful and quite unusual abbey church in the Abruzzo region: San Pietro ad Oratorium.

Like our previous church of Santa Maria in Valle Porclaneta, this one is also located in a quiet valley, that of river Tirino.

Built mostly during the 700s and fully completed in the 1100s, this church was part of a Benedictine abbey. It is designed on a basilica-type plan with three naves and three semi-circular apse.

The recessed part of the tympanum was painted, probably with a representation of Saint Peter.

September 7, 2011

I can officially say that I've experienced (black and white) film development. AH. You have no idea how excited I am about this... THIS is why I'm taking a course on photography. THIS is the reason. I know I'm a dork for proclaiming this but I couldn't care any less.

First off, the photos on the roll of film are not good. They are boring and have stupid subjects and hold no meaning and are just dumb. I kind of intentionally didn't put thought into the photos because I was half expecting them to turn out terribly.

But they didn't. Every single one of them came out! There were like 4 times where the camera screwed up on me, so I had to either take a photo of nothing (not knowing what that nothing was) or had to open the back up in the bathroom with the slightest bit of light to make sure the film was still on track.

I got back home from church tonight and made a mini-lightbox out of my desk lamp and some paper. Obviously it looked a little strange but I couldn't wait. I'm in love.

Anyhoo, I'm extremely excited about the fact that it was a success. And so excited about the printing that I think I'm going to go do that tomorrow instead of waiting until later this weekend. :).

Now that my rant is finished....

THIS BRINGS ME TO A VERY IMPORTANT QUESTION.

I want your input, and it would mean a lot to me if you would tell me your thoughts on the situation. Especially if you are a close contact of mine.

Here's the situation... because I am in this photography course this semester, part of the courses requirements have to do with social posts via Flickr and Twitter. Now, Twitter I don't mind just sharing my regular name and using the hashtag for the class when I want to, and not using it when I don't want to. But that brings us to Flickr...

Some of you may have noticed that I uploaded 5? cell phone photos onto my account today. Those were for my class. And it is a requirement that it be done via a cell phone and not my lovely T3i (sad panda, right?!).

I'm torn because I don't want to start a new Flickr account. Yes, they are free - but I already have one that I'm on ALL the time, and the hassle of signing in and out and in and out is just... blah...

On the other hand.... I don't really want cell phone photos on my stream. The fact that they are so low quality and uncontrollable bothers me. And putting it next to my ACTUAL photos kind of makes me gag a little. I use this Flickr as a portfolio of some sorts, it holds my most prized photos (and some not so prized ones... but you all can't see the crappy 365 photos anymore). It also has served as something for people to see when they inquire about hiring me for doing a shoot...

So my questions...

Do you think I should start a new Flickr for class purposes only?

If I didn't, would you mind seeing cell-phone-quality photos being vaguely uploaded occasionally?

What are your thoughts?

Just let me know what I should do because I keep going back and fourth.

Also: Adding the professor as a friend or whatever so just they could see the neccesary photos isn't an option.

SOOC.

Shot on a 35mm underwater camera.

There's a lot ogf aquatic life around these reefs. However despite getting through a couple of films I really didn't get any decent shots. All too far away and blurred. Perhaps with a bit of photoshop work I might be able to make something of them.

Wired have used this shot on their Blog

blog.wired.com/business/2008/04/google-to-go-do.html

Everyone's done this shot, so I figured Id go do one of my own.

Built mostly during the 700s and fully completed in the 1100s, this church was part of a Benedictine abbey. It is designed on a basilica-type plan with three naves and three semi-circular apse.

Two splendid examples of the very scarce but remarkable decoration of the nave. Note in particular the care and subtleness with which the ordinary stones used for the pillars have been adorned...

I'm going do a series of photos with minifigs exploring the places I hike. First, they need a rig to get them there!

There ya have it - the first sign of autumn!

Even that technically began yesterday :p

I'm eating sunflower seeds right now.

I have youth group tonight.

I should go do homework.

HBW :D

I've said it before and I'll say it again: if you don't want me to highlight your presence in a photo I've taken, don't then go doing something so totally conspicuous that you end up becoming the subject of the picture. Such as blatantly covering your face with your running board while the bus you are driving is ploughing on regardless, with you now oblivious to anything else in front of you.

The image is not a particularly memorable one, and is one that probably never would have seen the light of the internet, had it not been for the actions of our camera-shy friend.

Manchester Community Transport YJ13 HLG, Manchester, turning into Shudehill near the interchange. The date was 17/04/2018, around 12.35 in the afternoon. MCT management might want to consider having a word with their employee as to why he was prepared to jeopardise the safety of his bus, his passengers and that of other drivers and pedestrians, just for the sake of his own personal sensitivities.

Eastern Badlands, Lake Tekapo, Canterbury, South Island, New Zealand.

I've been looking forward to posting this one for a while. This is my favorite frame from New Zealand and one of my favorite frames of 2010. It started out as an innocent test frame, too; I was fumbling around in the dark, trying to get my intervalometer to work, when I decided to fire off a few manual exposures. The milky Way did the rest.

It's dull going doing this kind of thing in the winter; had it been the height of summer we would have tossed a blanket on the ground, popped the cork on a bottle of wine and shot well into the night. With the temperature well below freezing and my fingers in danger of falling off I didn't have quite as much fun. I guess I really shouldn't complain, though.

While you’re here, stop by and visit the world of Jahrensy, my trusty second shooter and partner in crime on this, that and another misadventure.

I took this shot as our car was going doing the highway near Vienna, Austria. I was actually attempting to capture the unique cloud formation and as you know, if you have ever attempted a shot from a moving vehicle, you sometimes capture some surprises. In this case it was the tower and power lines. Makes for an interesting composition. View On Black

For those of you that don't know, Fred is my cactus. He was a MSH related purchase and many of you will have been concerned that I'd killed him off afterwards. Well never fear, he is alive and well, though he does need repotting as he's learning over to one side too much. More like the leaning tower of Pisa than leaning to the dark side...

A year ago today I was playing with Lego.

When I rocked up to the depot (as you do) i came across this, the driver fiddled with the cab a bit, some other bloke was with him, then they just went off to the bus station, probably to go do Lincoln's runs.

This was transferred sometime in early 2017 from Newcastle.

I am overloaded at the moment. Usually, December is pretty slow for us but we just got 2 back to back rush orders for this week so we're working double time. Worked 'til 10 last night and was up BEFORE the sun to go do some pickups before heading to the shop. OMG, I'm so tired!

Not feeling too creative these last few days...and it shows! lol

Hopefully, this weekend I can get some sleep and my mojo back :)

So i went to go do some photos this morning out in Syosset and I came across this beautiful Porsche just parked alone in an empty parking lot. I figured i'd give the new 85mm 1.8 a try!

Shot with: Canon t5i, Canon 85mm f1.8 @ f1.8 Using natural light.

Well its no square crop, but I like it. Today was so foggy at some point you just couldn't see anymore. I've been busy all day. It's been awhile since I was restricted this much to go shoot. But I'm okay with that. I'm going to go do some reading for school. Hope things went well for everyone else.

This is for JFDI challenge 43: Feel the fear and do it anyway.

I had NO clue what to do today, until an idea popped into my head as I was putting the kids to bed, inspired by a conversation I had with a friend at work today, about a particular shop. I'm still not hugely comfortable doing public SPs so I thought I'd go do a facedown or something, right in front of the shop - it would cover JFDI, and be funny in the context of the conversation I'd had.

Except when I got there, it turned out the shop wasn't called what I thought it was - which kind of wrecked my plan. It would still have done for JFDI I suppose... but somehow the plan was ruined.

So, I tried to get a shot in some local woods, but everything I tried was scuppered by brambles and thorns and my lack of agility. I had a little panic - I hated the thought of not getting my shot. And I had a little dawning of realisation - I really am scared to fail.

So this is me, posting completely not any of the shots I wanted, trying not to run away from the thought of failure, but instead facing it head on.

First off, Press "L" NOW! Its so much better :)...now go do it! :)

I thought this turned out awesome! Love this shot. Lighting was perfect yesterday.

I haven't had much time lately for photography unfortunately. I have some pretty major life changes coming up in the next few months and that's taken up all my time. My wife and I have decided to move back home to Malaysia after about 19 years being away! It's been a huge decision to leave the UK but we're extremely excited now about the next chapter of our lives.

Moving countries sure is a stressful undertaking! Just looking at the house that we need to pack up is leaving me feeling pretty daunted. However, all the things we have to do here before we go does not compare to what we have to do when we get to Malaysia. I've not lived in Malaysia now since I left for school in New Zealand back in 1993. Needless to say, it's going to take a little getting used to ;)

One thing I'm really looking forward to is a change in photographic scenery. There's going to be a whole new set of challenges shooting in hot, sticky weather but there's also going to be a whole new set of countries to visit which is an extremely exciting proposition.

So, just to say yes, I'm still alive, here's one from the archives, taken a couple of months back in New York. I was really digging the reflections of Manhattan Bridge in the windows here. Btw, Dumbo has got to be the best name for a place ever!

Hope everyone's doing well!

Aaron Nace is the star of his own show, but while many of us are questing for stardom all over the internet by filling out silly surveys, updating your status, and uploading home movies for the world to see, Aaron Nace is out taking amazing photographs, and that is why his star shine brighter in the cosmos of the web. He inspires us to go do it ourselves and make it interesting. Find out more at www.creativetempest.com

Rush » The Trees Lyrics

There is unrest in the forest

There is trouble with the trees

For the maples want more sunlight

And the oaks ignore their pleas

The trouble with the maples

(And they're quite convinced they're right)

They say the oaks are just too lofty

And they grab up all the light

But the oaks can't help their feelings

If they like the way they're made

And they wonder why the maples

Can't be happy in their shade

There is trouble in the forest

And the creatures all have fled

As the maples scream 'Oppression!'

And the oaks just shake their heads

So the maples formed a union

And demanded equal rights

'The oaks are just too greedy

We will make them give us light'

Now there's no more oak oppression

For they passed a noble law

And the trees are all kept equal

By hatchet, axe and saw

In Ravenna, there is obviously a lot to see, but not a lot to show in acceptable quality photographs, as TRIPODS ARE PROHIBITED EVERYWHERE AS “PROFESSIONAL ACCESSORIES”.

Yes, that is as asinine as can be, and it means no photography indoors, where there is not enough light...

Among the most interesting monuments the city has to offer is the mausoleum of Ostrogothic King Theodoric, whom we encountered before when I uploaded photos of the Sant’ Apollinare Nuovo church, which he had built.

Erected around 520-530, this paleo-Christian monument shows an unusual way to assemble arch stones with recesses more typical of Mid-Eastern architecture. Possibly, an architect from Syria or Asia Minor designed it.

The most fascinating part about this mausoleum however, is its roof, which is one single piece of stone 11 meters in diameter and weighing more than 300 tons.

It is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The roof from the inside. The cross inscribed in a stone (which may be the ancestor of our “Celtic crosses”) was decorated in polychromy, but most of it is gone nowadays.

I've been down with a cold for the last few days, so I hadn;t been getting out as much as the pup would like. So this morning he was absolutely driving Jan and I crazy with wanting to go do something. So I decided I'd take him for a little hike down by the river. I've seen this spot many times but never realized the water came from a warm underground spring, cause the river is almost frozen solid and it flows at least 10 times quicker than this little feeder to the river.

Learnt something new while I was down there, the pup had a blast he just ran and ran the whole time we where out there.

Trap

P.S. This one really deserves to be looked at large on Black.

Malachi’s journey had taken an unexpected turn. After turning a bend in the road he had been ambushed by several men with crossbows. He had been taken to a cave where the highwaymen were also holding two other prisoners, a Lenfel sailor, and a Garheim scholar.

He was tied up next to the sailor, whom he found was called Robert.

“Who are these bandits?” Malachi asked.

“Some sort of secret society,” Robert said. “They came hunting you after they received a letter.”

A letter, Malachi thought. That’s strange, I never told anyone where I was going.

“Do you think there is any way we can get out of here?” Malachi asked.

“Actually, this is the probably the best chance were going to get.” the sailor said. “Their leader and about half his forces are watching another road to make sure you don’t get past that way. If we want to get out of here we better do it before they come back. I’ve managed to get my hands untied. Between you and me if we get a hold of a weapon we might make it.”

“Could you get my hands-”

“What did you say,” the guard demanded.

“Now!” the sailor yelled as he lunged at the guard. The guard, however, was ready and knocked the sailor down with the end of his spear.

Untied first, Malachi thought. Now we’re in trouble.

A voice bellowed from further down the tunnel.

“Kill them if they try to escape!”

That guard advanced towards the fallen sailor, spear upraised. I’ve got to do something. Malachi ran forward him and the guard stabbed at him. Malachi leapt back, causing the guard’s thrust to miss, then reversed direction and kicked the guard in the chest. While he was stunned, Malachi kicked the guard again in the chin and he crumpled to the ground.

Malachi grabbed the spear and found that it was in fact his glaive, which the guard had stolen. He carefully cut the ropes around his wrists. He stood ready, half terrified and half exhilarated that he was actually fighting for his life. Another thug was coming up the tunnel, a massive brute with a mace and a shield painted with the white hand symbol that seem to be the emblem of the group. This is it. The guard raised his mace and struck. Malachi blocked the blow high with his glaive haft, and then twisting to the side, reversed directions with his glaive and hit the man with the reverse end. Before the thug had time to react, Malachi brought the point back to his throat.

“Drop your weapons,” Malachi said.

Robert had recovered by now and was watching over the first guard.

“Will you tie these two up?” Malachi asked.

“With pleasure,” the sailor grinned.

Disappointingly, when my processors ran the roll… this seems to have been at the very end. I'm kind of wondering if it really was at the end of the roll, or if they just managed to screw it up. I'm not really sure how these things tend to go. Does anyone know if this is commonplace? In the end… the snake-eye bites are actually kinda nifty, I suppose.

Press "L" NOW! Its so much better :)...now go do it! :)

I had 1500 views in one day yesterday! Thank you guys all!!

This was my first time doing portraits!

I had a chance to go out on Canada Day and shoot with Raveena! She was great! Wanted to get some portraits done, so why say no? I had a lot of fun with her, and we will definitely be meeting up again to shoot some more! I will be trying to shoot more portraits in the coming days!

Would love some feedback! Trying some different things!

A BIG thanks to Jonathan Yacoub for all the advice and support he gave me!

I drive with purpose.

Just a bit of fun....and now I will go do something else!

Wow! A Sky-Fi plane!

"Hi! I'm Jon, and this is my V-22 Phoenix... well, actually, it belongs to Captain Gail Storm, but I've borrowed it since the Days of the LAB. Don't be alarmed by the big guns and the menacing black bomb hanging from the fuselage, it's just for show. Mostly, anyway," Jon said. He actually had a gun in his belt, too, although Mr. ReBrick first wondered if the pilot was just happy to see him.

"You're not, by any chance, on your way towards that hotel in town?" Mr. ReBrick asked, realising just then how stupid the question sounded.

"Of course I am! That's exactly where I'm going. Do you need a lift?"

Mr. ReBrick nodded, and couldn't believe his luck...

Note: I most certainly didn't design this plane - it's the work of the pilot, Jon Hall, an extremely talented builder and a genuinely nice guy. I built it from instructions found in the LEGO Adventure Book, Vol. 1 (and Jon had a couple of extra wing stickers that he very generously donated).

The world would have you believe that it was Spencer Silver and Art Fry that invented the post-it note back in the 1970's.

That's plainly false.

I have photographic proof that mad uncle mad Mc Flibble the mad clearly invented post-it notes before that.

Sure... there are no dates on the picture, but er... on the back of the photo there's a hand-written date that clearly says 1871.

Yup.

And yes... there will clearly be pedants that claim that 1871 was before they really got going doing colour photos and stuff... but he invented that too. And those naff photography backgrounds you got in school. And time travel. Actually yes... he invented time travel.

Yes.

Anyway, I know you'd love to:

Where does the ocean go?

Through a cloudy haze on the sunlit sea

We waved them away from the southern quay

Seventeen hands but the one in charge

Was one fine man from the bayou sauvage

Mon cher Simeon keep safe, says I.

I try not to show him the tear in my eye

I said my love I willl wait for you

Farewell sweet boy from the wild bayou

(Chorus)

Where does the ocean go?

Should I let it take me?

Any second they may wake me

Does anybody know?

Where does the ocean go?

I knew back then as I always known

That sailors pray as the trade winds blow

But the ship went down off the coast of Spain

I read the letter and felt his pain

(Chorus)

Where does the ocean go?

Should I let it take me?

Any second they may wake me

Does anybody know?

Where does the ocean go?

Some days I walk on the harbour side

And I watch the sea and the rising tide

And I see him there like a sad mirage

My lost man in the monde du sauvage

(Chorus)

Where does the ocean go?

Should I let it take me?

Any second they may wake me

Does anybody know?

Where does the ocean go?

Does anybody know?

Where does the ocean go?

For what you did to me,And what I'll do to you ,You get, what everyone else gets

You get a lifetime,Let's go

Do you remember that day when we met, You told me this gets harder , Well, it did

Been holding on forever, Promise me that when I'm gone, you'll kill my enemies

The damage, you've inflicted temporary wounds

I'm coming back from the dead and I'll take you home with me

I'm taking back the life you stole

We never got that far, This helps me to think all through the night

Bright lights that won't kill me now, won't tell me how , Just you and I, your stareless eyes remain

Hip hip hooray for me, You talk to me , But would you kill me in my sleep

Lay still like the dead , From the razor to the rosary, We could lose ourselves

And paint these walls in pitchfork red

I will avenge my ghost with every breath I take

I'm coming back from the dead and I'll take you home with me

I'm taking back the life you stole

This hole you put me in, Wasn't deep enough and I'm climbing out right now

You're running out of places to hide from me

When you go, just know that I will remember you

If living was the hardest part, We'll then one day be together , And in the end, we'll fall apart, Just like the leaves change in color , And then I will be with you

I will be there one last time now

When you go just know that , I will remember you

I lost my fear of falling, I will be with you, I will be with you
