The first gladiator we encountered in this enchanted realm of Gondwana was Taru (T-185) himself - a magnificent male tiger about 6/7 years old and ready to make his move into the light of fame and glory.

Ice sheets go around in an eddy in a side pool of the river Kitkajoki in Kuusamo, Finland. It was so cold that my only battery gave me like 5 x 4 minute exposures and that was it! But the mini road trip through the night and a beautiful hike in the magical moonlit forest was already totally worth it and hey at least I got few frames on top of that! The common woodshrike is a species of bird found in Asia. It is now usually considered a member of the family Vangidae. A medium-sized woodshrike with grayish-brown upperparts, black facial mask, a white rump & a gray tail with white outer tail feathers. It is usually found in dry forested areas and shrublands.

Scion of Wagdoh, Shambhu is one of four gladiators waiting in the wings in the Junona - Adegaon - Dewada - Agarzari range; Chota Dhadiyal, Taru & Paras the other three. The stage is set for some significant battles as each of these approach their age of dominance. The first skirmish was with Taru on 4th December with Shambhu emerging the winner.

Pallas's gull, also known as the Great Black-headed Gull, is a large powerful gull of saline, brackish, and fresh water bodies. Breeding adult has a black head with a thin incomplete crescent around the eye and a red-and-black-tipped bill. Non-breeding adults retain a partial “hood” of patchy black on the back of the head.
The eye crescents and a flashing white rump help to distinguish first-winter birds from Herring-type gulls. Can be readily separated by size in any plumage from the smaller dark-headed gulls.
As is the case with many gulls, it has traditionally been placed in the genus Larus. The scientific name is from Ancient Greek. Ichthyaetus is from ikhthus, "fish", and aetos, "eagle".

The Sambhar (Rusa unicolor) are a large deer species native to the Indian subcontinent, South China & SE Asia listed as a Vulnerable Species on the IUCN Red List since 2008. Sambar have many subspecies which vary in size and appearance, and it is known as the largest Oriental deer with some adult males reaching 550kg in weight. Their populations have declined substantially due to severe hunting, local insurgency, and industrial exploitation of habitat.
Sambar have a thick coat of long, coarse hair which forms a dense mane around the neck, especially in males. The males can be distinguished by their antlers, as well as being slightly larger and darker than females and young. The name is also spelled Sambur, Sambhar or Sambhur.

The White-eyed Buzzard (Butastur teesa) is a slim brown buzzard with a distinct white iris. Adults have a white throat with a prominent dark stripe, yellow base of the bill, & a rufous tail. The dark tips to wing feathers are clearly visible in flight and there is often a white patch on its nape. The usual habitat is dry, open country or forest, where it mainly feeds on insects, rodents, & small mammals. This species is most often seen soaring alone in thermals or perched still. Groups of two or three may sometimes be seen.

Yellow-billed Blue Magpie
I return again to the Singalila Ridge, in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal, at an altitude of more than 7000 feet above mean sea level, in search of a colourful long-tailed corvid - the Yellow-billed Blue Magpie. Similar in coloration to the Red-billed, the Yellow-billed is a paler blue overall, with a small white patch at the back of the crown instead of an extensive white stripe, and a bright yellow bill instead of a scarlet one. Primarily found in Himalayan hill forest, with disjunct populations in northwestern Myanmar and northern Vietnam.

Nilgai
The nilgai (Boselaphus tragocamelus) (/ˈnilˌɡaɪ/, literally meaning "blue cow") is the largest antelope of Asia, and is ubiquitous across the northern Indian subcontinent. It is the sole member of the genus Boselaphus.
It is a sturdy thin-legged antelope, characterised by a sloping back, a deep neck with a white patch on the throat, a short crest of hair along the neck terminating in a tuft, and white facial spots. A column of pendant coarse hair hangs from the dewlap ridge below the white patch. Females and juveniles are orange to tawny while adult males have a bluish-grey coat and possess horns.
