Pallas's gull, also known as the Great Black-headed Gull, is a large powerful gull of saline, brackish, and fresh water bodies. Breeding adult has a black head with a thin incomplete crescent around the eye and a red-and-black-tipped bill. Non-breeding adults retain a partial “hood” of patchy black on the back of the head.
The eye crescents and a flashing white rump help to distinguish first-winter birds from Herring-type gulls. Can be readily separated by size in any plumage from the smaller dark-headed gulls.
As is the case with many gulls, it has traditionally been placed in the genus Larus. The scientific name is from Ancient Greek. Ichthyaetus is from ikhthus, "fish", and aetos, "eagle".

E tutto si muove in danza
luce rasa del tramonto
brillano le linee di cresta come oro
le punte dei rami graffiano di sangue le nubi e il cielo
tutto trema
la Luce fa come crede
Dio presiede
e scende l'ombra della notte
sicuri dell'alba di domani
Beato Sante, Italy febbraio 2023
And everything moves in dance
razor light of sunset
the crest lines shine like gold
the tips of the branches scratch the clouds and the sky with blood
everything shakes
the Light does as it pleases
God presides
and the shadow of night falls
sure of tomorrow's dawn

The first gladiator we encountered in this enchanted realm of Gondwana was Taru (T-185) himself - a magnificent male tiger about 6/7 years old and ready to make his move into the light of fame and glory.

“Siren”
----------------------------------------------------
The wave came up over my feet and I took a step further into the water, feeling the flow of the tide tugging me forward. A few meters out a smooth rock rose above the tide. The light danced off of its surface as the water washed over it. I wanted to get closer and I waded out until the bottom just about disappeared. Sanity prevailed and I took a step back, resisting the siren’s call.

Mire vuestra merced -respondió Sancho- que aquellos que allí se parecen no son gigantes, sino molinos de viento, y lo que en ellos parecen brazos son las aspas, que, volteadas del viento, hacen andar la piedra del molino.

This was one of those mornings where reality transcends belief and the camera serves as objective witness to a scene I would not believe had I not experienced it. If a unicorn walked past me while I took this photo it would not have seemed out of place.

An unmistakable cinnamon coloured bird with a zebra-striped wings, a Chinese fan of a crest (usually held closed, but often raised just after landing), and a rapier of a bill. The hoopoe favours semi-open habitats such as heathland, farmland, orchards, grassy lawns, where it feeds on the ground, probing with its long bill for insects.

Yellow-billed Blue Magpie
I return again to the Singalila Ridge, in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal, at an altitude of more than 7000 feet above mean sea level, in search of a colourful long-tailed corvid - the Yellow-billed Blue Magpie. Similar in coloration to the Red-billed, the Yellow-billed is a paler blue overall, with a small white patch at the back of the crown instead of an extensive white stripe, and a bright yellow bill instead of a scarlet one. Primarily found in Himalayan hill forest, with disjunct populations in northwestern Myanmar and northern Vietnam.

A medium-sized ibis with a dark body, often showing a bluish-green sheen. The crown and nape are covered in bright red warts. A white patch is usually visible near the shoulder of the wing. The bill is long and downcurved. This species can be confused with the similar-looking Glossy Ibis, but Glossy Ibis is smaller and lacks the red warts and white shoulder patch. In flight, the legs of Red-naped Ibis don’t extend beyond the tail, unlike in Glossy Ibis. Unlike most other ibis, Red-naped favors drier habitats, such as rye fields. It is usually found singly or in loose groups.
