Red topped aurora is relatively rare. They appear during geomagnetic storms that spread far from the poles. Red is caused by oxygen atoms meeting the solar wind as high as 500km above Earth's surface.

Some places are better if experienced it alone. The picturesque Queenstown is such a place where this photo is taken.

Fine morning glow at one of the small lakes, close to home. What gives this shot some interest is - in my opinion, the texture of the clouds, reflected on the surface of the water.

From July 2022:

One last day in this joyful place. I love wilderness. I love solitude. I love how these two wonderful qualities are found in abundance in National Parks. That said, sometimes, and especially in our oldest and more historic National Parks, there is a spot that everyone goes to and partakes in what I call "traditional tourist activities". That usually means seeing the most iconic or typical overview of the park they're in. Old Faithful is a great example of this. Mather Point, too. Here in Sequoia? It's the Sherman Tree. Seeing people pour into the Sequoia grove and marvel at the largest tree on Earth is joyful. There's electricity in the air. Happiness is found in spades. And there's a sense of solemn and noble purpose too; people have made the pilgrimage to this park, now it is time to act upon the place as generations before us have, too. That's usually executed in everyone gathering for a picture with the tree. But what stands out to me is the reaction immediately following or preceding the picture: pure awe that you're in the presence of something so ancient, so massive, and so pure, and so universal. Nearly everyone who has journeyed to Sequoia has done this. That sense of joy and awe and purpose is palpable. National Parks are landscapes of nature, yes, but also of emotion. This particular landscape is a landmark of joy. I'm going to miss Sequoia National Park very much. I didn't expect how much I would love it, but here we are. Joyous.

Sh2-101 The Tulip Nebula

SH2-101 is a HII region emission nebula located in the constellation Cygnus. It is sometimes also called the Tulip Nebula because it appears to resemble the outline of a tulip. It lies at a distance of about 6,000 light-years from Earth.

She walked into my viewfinder unexpectedly. Perspective rules here giving an interesting angle to the main subject and setting her against a dramatic sky and roofline. The bold backdrop shapes anchor the shot and provide a vivid contrast that pushes the subject visually forward in the frame. There is a dynamic feel of motion - of things to do and places to go - even though the frame is frozen in a split second of time.

Some evening light on this nicely blooming spring tree. The dry grass in the foreground was remaining from the last year. It contrasts with the fresh life of the tree and tells a story of a dry summer and warm winter without any snow.

I love this composition that i find in Norway!!

Under a Golden Canopy

ICM, intentional camera movement, adds a bit of mystery and saturated color to this passageway. Gold and blue join forces to add energy. Patterns reinforce. Color decorates shapes and defines space. Spatial relationships are strong. It's easy to see they are walking in grandeur.

A landscape of its own can be found in the intimate details of a cornfield. Hope you like the suttle light and the dark shadows.

This long, cascading water fall is part of the White River, Pukaskwa National Park. These rapid falls are the final ones before the river hits Lake Superior. To get to this view, you have to go off the White River trail, listen to the sound of the falls and follow the river up stream, hiking along the river boulders from the suspension bridge.

The colours of Aurora

Red is rarely see in Aurora. Using a fully modified camera, I am able to capture the full spectrum of colours. Red appears in Aurora when solar particles react with Oxygen at higher altitudes, generally above 150 miles.

Yellow and Pink, also rarely seen, are also associated with high altitude solar activity.

Green, the most common colour for aurora, are associated with solar activity at altitudes between 60 to 150 miles.

Blue and purple, also rarely seen, are associated with solar activity at altitudes of 60 miles or less.
