Kitoko given King's ovocation at his arrival in Kigali / 12 July 2017

I do hope you're not easily offended or difficultly amused. Because ladies and gentlemen, a plague of authors is a very mature, sober gathering that would most certainly not involve stealing a bar menu and doodling obscenities all over the back in the name of creating the grossest hypothetical restaurant ever.

Established in 1848, the Library was a pioneer of public library service in America. It was the first large free municipal library in the United States, the first public library to lend books, the first to have a branch library, and the first to have a children’s room.

Given FDA’s new guidance on risk‐based monitoring(RBM), there has been a lot of interest on identifying critical data points, drafting RBM plans, and executing RBM. TransCelerate, which is a consortium of biopharmaceutical industry personnel, issued a position paper to assist biopharmaceutical Sponsors/CROs with defining RBM activities; nonetheless, due to the level of subjectivity in clinical trials, clinical operations personnel seem to exhibit a level of confusion, particularly around interpreting risk and executing centralized monitoring.

Given the way the school has torn down things this year, I'm a little concerned for these chandeliers.

Given the reputation that Crib Goch holds in terms of fatalities every year and just how hard it is to make it across the ridge I thought this represented a softer way to look at it.

Our humble little wedding in our hotel room at the coast in Oregon. My mom officiated, my dad gave me away and my brother and his girlfriend were the witnesses. The pups were there too.

The first building of the Huguenot Seminary, which was opened in 1874, was given as a memorial to the Huguenots who settled in South Africa. The buildings erected since then have been largely the gifts of friends in this and other lands. The College building was finished in 1897. The object of the whole institution is to give a Christian education and training to the daughters of South Africa. The course of study begins with the Kindergarten and is continued to the B.A. degree. There is also a Normal Department, and special classes preparing for Mission work. Four branch Huguenot Seminaries have been opened in the Colony, Free State, Natal and Transvaal. The Seminary at Wellington has sent out more than 600 teachers, and more than 50 missionaries in the last ten tears have gone to the Diamond Fields of Kimberley, The Gold Fields of Johannesburg, Mashonaland, Zambesi, and Lake Nyassa.

Founded by Dr Andrew Murray in 1874, the Huguenot Seminary was the first institution of its kind for girls in South Africa. It was modelled on the lines of Mount Holyoke, Massachusetts, USA. Its marked religious character served to commemorate the Huguenots. The Huguenot Seminary established Wellington as an important centre of education and gave rise to a succession of educational institutions where girls and women were also accommodated. In 1896 a Training College for teachers was established, in 1899 the Huguenot College (from 1920 until 1950, Huguenot University College), and in 1899 the Huguenot Girls' High School. The Teachers' Training College now goes by the name of the Boland College of Education. The University College reverted to its original name of Huguenot College in 1951 and trains social workers, youth workers and mission workers. The Huguenot Girls' High School merged with the Boys' School in 1954 and is now known as the Huguenot High School.

In 1912 the boys of the 2nd Walworth Troop were given the chance of a holiday under canvas at the Scout Camp in Leysdown. In addition, there was the adventure of sailing down The Thames from Waterloo Bridge to the camp in their training ship, The Arethusa.

The summer of 1912 was cold and wet. In August there were no sunny days and only 9 days had no measureable rain. The Arethusa set sail on the afternoon of Saturday 3rd August with a complement of 5 adults and 24 scouts and arrived at Erith at 9:00 where they anchored for the night in a cold drizzle. They then rose at 4:00 on the Sunday to sail down to Leysdown. A strong wind was blowing from the Kent coast but the boat was protected by keeping close to the North Sheppey shore. However to get to Leysdown the boat had to turn down the East cost at Warden Point. At this moment, about 2:00 P.M. a heavy squall hit them and the boat overturned; throwing the crew and boys into the stormy sea.

Luckily, the Leysdown coastguard had been expecting The Arethusa and witnessed the sinking; so they were able to launch their lifeboat; with a crew of 2 coastguard and 2 volunteers, immediately and set off on the 2 mile trek, only powered by oars, to rescue the crew.

The heroic bravery of the coastguards and the adult scouts who went back into the sea time after time to try and rescue the boys resulted in 15 of the boys being saved and the tragic loss of 9 of the boys.

The tragedy deeply affected the nation and Sir Winston Churchill, then First Lord Of The Admiralty, sent a navel destroyer to carry the boy’s bodies back to Walworth. The bodies were taken to St John’s Church, Larcom Road where more than 100,000 people passed through to pay their respects.

The funeral was held on 10 August 1912, on yet another thundery, rain-soaked day. More than one million people are estimated to have lined the procession from St John’s to Nunhead Cemetery where the boys are buried. The Daily Mirror and The Daily Express both printed special editions.

The Daily Express organised a collection for a fitting memorial for the boys and in 1914 a life-size bronze model of a Scout designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and sculpted by Miss Lillie Read was erected by the graves. Unfortunately, in the 1960s, Nunhead cemetery fell into a state of neglect and disrepair and, in 1969, the statue was sawn off at the ankles and taken away and has never been seen again. Presumably it has been melted down for scrap.

The tragedy was largely forgotten after World War I. There has recently been a revived interest. Some because of the centenary but mainly because of the three Beckham brothers. One, William, perished but two, Ted & John survived. Ted was to become the Great Grandfather of David Robert Joseph Beckham one time professional footballer.
