Oh, no, we’re being given the closed shoulder! - #sign #shoulderclosed via Instagram bit.ly/2HkEgJx

Given the discussions that ‘downtowns are dead’, I had to go look for myself.

This is on Powell St., just above Market St., on a Tuesday. We’re in the middle of what was the downtown shopping area, at the traditional spot where masses of tourists lined up for the cable cars and masses of peddlers/hucksters lined up to work that crowd. There were definitely less of both tourists and the less-than-perfectly-honest peddlers, but there were enough tourists (they’re behind me) to make it worthwhile for the city to run numerous cable cars.

This is a photograph from a set of photographs taken at the St. Coca's AC 5KM Road Race 2016 which was held in Kilcock, Co. Kildare, Ireland at 20:00 on Friday 24th June 2016. This superb road race is now firmly established again as one of the fastest and best organised road races of it's kind in Leinster. The race follows a left handed course around a well known local walking route around Laragh and in the closing kilometer runs parallel to the Royal Canal into the finish at the railway station in the town having started at the primary school close to the St. Coca's running track. In fact for several hundred meters after the 4KM marker towards the finish the course runs parallel with the railway, canal and the R148 between Kilcock and Maynooth. This geographic feature is one of only a small number with this parallel configuration in all of Europe.

The members of St. Coca's AC and the many volunteers from the local community must be given great praise for organising another fantastic night of racing for runners, joggers, and walkers. The 5KM course is very flat with the exception of short incline up a motorway overpass and makes its way along narrow country lanes sheltered on either side by hedgerows. The nice summer evening made for an enjoyable night for everyone with a large crowd gathering at the finish to cheer on participants. Refreshments and prize awards were held in the Kilcock GAA club near to both the race start and close to the St. Coca's running track.

BUT..... Wait there a minute....

We take these photographs as a hobby and as a contribution to the running community in Ireland. We do not charge for our photographs. Our only "cost" is that we request that if you are using these images: (1) on social media sites such as Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, Twitter,LinkedIn, Google+, VK.com, Vine, Meetup, Tagged, Ask.fm,etc or (2) other websites, blogs, web multimedia, commercial/promotional material that you must provide a link back to our Flickr page to attribute us or acknowledge us as the original photographers.

This also extends to the use of these images for Facebook profile pictures. In these cases please make a separate wall or blog post with a link to our Flickr page. If you do not know how this should be done for Facebook or other social media please email us and we will be happy to help suggest how to link to us.

I want to download these pictures to my computer or device?

You can download this photographic image here directly to your computer or device. This version is the low resolution web-quality image. How to download will vary slight from device to device and from browser to browser. Have a look for a down-arrow symbol or the link to 'View/Download' all sizes. When you click on either of these you will be presented with the option to download the image. Remember just doing a right-click and "save target as" will not work on Flickr.

I want get full resolution, print-quality, copies of these photographs?

If you just need these photographs for online usage then they can be used directly once you respect their Creative Commons license and provide a link back to our Flickr set if you use them. For offline usage and printing all of the photographs posted here on this Flickr set are available free, at no cost, at full image resolution.

I would like to contribute something for your photograph(s)?

Many people offer payment for our photographs. As stated above we do not charge for these photographs. We take these photographs as our contribution to the running community in Ireland. If you feel that the photograph(s) you request are good enough that you would consider paying for their purchase from other photographic providers or in other circumstances we would suggest that you can provide a donation to any of the great charities in Ireland who do work for Cancer Care or Cancer Research in Ireland.

Let's get a bit technical: We use Creative Commons Licensing for these photographs

We use the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License for all our photographs here in this photograph set. What does this mean in reality?

The explaination is very simple.

Attribution- anyone using our photographs gives us an appropriate credit for it. This ensures that people aren't taking our photographs and passing them off as their own. This usually just mean putting a link to our photographs somewhere on your website, blog, or Facebook where other people can see it.

ShareAlike – anyone can use these photographs, and make changes if they like, or incorporate them into a bigger project, but they must make those changes available back to the community under the same terms.

Above all what Creative Commons aims to do is to encourage creative sharing. See some examples of Creative Commons photographs on Flickr: www.flickr.com/creativecommons/

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:

►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera

►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.

Don't like your photograph here?

That's OK! We understand!

If, for any reason, you are not happy or comfortable with your picture appearing here in this photoset on Flickr then please email us at petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com and we will remove it as soon as possible. We give careful consideration to each photograph before uploading.

I want to tell people about these great photographs!

Great! Thank you! The best link to spread the word around is probably http://www.flickr.com/peterm7/sets

Larry La Trobe is the name given to a popular, cast bronze statue of a dog situated on the northern end of Melbourne’s City Square (corner of Collins Street and Swanston Street). Along with the Burke and Wills monument, the statue is one of only two free standing art works in the City Square precinc

Melbourne artist Pamela Irving created the statue as a result of a commission from the Melbourne City Council in 1992 and was the first sculpture for Melbourne’s Open Air Sculpture Museum. Based on her own dog, Lucy, the statue is not representative of any particular breed but has been crafted to generate a sense of Australian larrikinism in the viewer. Irving named the statue after her uncle Larry and the surname ‘La Trobe’ was appended to represent the relationship with Melbourne, Australia and the state of Victoria. Charles La Trobe was the first Lieutenant Governor of the state of Victoria.

Despite being anchored by 30 cm bolts, the statue was stolen on the night of 30/31 August 1995[3]. Thought to have been taken as part of a university stunt or melted down no trace was ever found of the original statue or the thieves who committed the theft.

A campaign was started by the Melbourne Times, a weekly city newspaper, to recover Larry. The publicity generated by this campaign captured the imagination of the public. A two metre high likeness of Larry was created for the 1996 Moomba Parade to create additional publicity that might lead to the return of the statue.

Although the subject of a significant publicity and media campaign the original statue has never been recovered. The statue now located in the square is the second statue of ‘Larry’. In 1996, Peter Kolliner, previous owner of the foundry where Larry was originally cast, paid for a casting of a new statue. The new statue was cast in the same mould as the original but Irving reddened the casting material to provide the second ‘Larry’ with a unique identity.

The second Larry was reinstalled in the City Square and officially unveiled on 16 September 1996 by Melbourne Lord Mayor, Councillor Ivan Deveson

Opened 18 Oct 1863 as Chinkford Church of England on land given by Mr Byerlee & Mr Frost, consecrated Oct 1864, local stone & buttresses, extensions (chancel & porch), re-opened 25 Apr 1905, closed 1990s, used by school as hall. One window transferred to Riverton parish hall. First settlement known as Chinkford 1853, Manoora laid out 1867 nearer railway station.

“On Sunday, the 18th instant, the new church at Chinkford, head of the Gilbert, was opened by the venerable Archdeacon Woodcock.” [Register 2 Nov 1863]

“Substantial alterations, embracing extension of building, by construction of chancel, 14 feet by 13 feet, of punch stone, and new ceiling to main portion of edifice, are in the course of completion. A Gothic arch has been artistically constructed in what was the rear wall of the church, on to which the chancel has been built.” [Kapunda Herald 24 Feb 1905]

“Great improvements and additions having recently been made to the Immanuel Church: A new chancel has been added, a diagonal ceiling put into the nave, memorial windows have replaced the old plain glass ones, and the exterior has been thoroughly renovated. The Manoora branch of the Girls' Friendly Society contributed £10 towards the purchase of the new organ; they also presented the brass communion rails, altar desk, and brass flower vases. Mrs. W T. Mortlock, of Martindale Hall, presented a handsome frontal for the altar, and the members of the Riverton church gave two beautiful chairs.” [Advertiser 1 May 1905]

“three memorial windows have been placed in position, two of these in memory of two founders.” [Kapunda Herald 28 Apr 1905]

“It is very curious how the township adjoining the railway station is divided. One says it is Chinkford, another Burton, and a third Manoora. However, as the last is the original name, most persons think it ought to be called Manoora.” [Register 9 Mar 1871]

“It seems strange that the railway station should retain the name of Manoora, when it is patent to all observers that the leading and most thriving township is Burton, which is only separated from the station by the length of a chain. . . Chinkford, Manoora, and Burton will do well apparently to stop their sparring, and adopt one name, whatever it may be, that will cover the three places. They are sufficiently near to be considered by outsiders as one township, and the adoption of such a plan would save endless confusion to travellers and business people.” [Register 18 Mar 1871]

I sat in the third row, being given an unnecessary view of you and your beautiful fiance standing on the alter, holding hands. I felt a stinging behind my eyes as they began to water when you said "I do." She timidly smiled and gave you this look. That's when the tears actually fell from my cloudy eyes that supplied everything but a clear vision at this moment. She was in love with you. You were in love with her. And I knew it from a glance. The most heartwarming words were spoken, and the sobs began. "Oh, you poor thing...Your day with true love will come soon!" The sweet old lady next to me whispered and put her arm around me. She rubbed my back and I shook my head, trying to hold back the tears with every will in my body. I wasn't crying because it was a beautiful service, even though it was. The sweet old lady was wrong. My day to find true love wouldn't come, because it already had. And it was thrown away, I realized, as I stared at my true love standing at the alter, love struck and happy as ever. I turned my body away from the alter and tried to stare at the beautiful scenery set up instead of the married couple. "You may now kiss the bride" rang in my head a million times after it was said, each time more obnoxiously than the last. I cut my eyes and took in my surroundings. That should have been me, holding his hands and kissing him. That should be me, walking down the alter with him, smiling and happily married. See the emotion in my eyes. Maybe my day will come. -Cynthia Willbuck, "My Day Will Come."

Peter also let me drive class 11 12098 on the Stephenson Railway,North Tyneside during the brief period when he was its owner.

It was like an Aladdin’s cave of jaw dropping models when I visited.

I was told the Hymek could pull eight people behind it on a dry rail.

The locomotive is sound fitted with a maximum speed of 5 mph.

I’m its new proud owner.

I was flattered when Geoff said his Dad would be pleased to know his engine was going to a good home where it would be appreciated.

I will share a photo of the Hymek on display in its new home in due course.

I think I was given this by the attendant at Horseshoe Garage at Gwalchmai on Anglesey www.flickr.com/photos/danlockton/16076661878 in 1990.

It's noticeable how the blue is darker than on the pole sign. This is the same format of sticker as seen on the 4-star pumps at Central Garage, Cark-in-Cartmel, in Soft Top, Hard Shoulder (1991) — see below. The cut-off corners of the diamond, as if it were trying to 'break out' of the square, were an interesting design choice—previous Power logos had always shown the whole diamond (as the Unleaded and Diesel stickers continued to do) and the later logo took a different approach to the diamond itself.

This Power logo (replacing an earlier one as seen here in Reeth), was introduced in the mid-1980s by Hargreaves Fuel Services, who themselves had a diamond-shaped 'HG' (Hargreaves Group) logo. I've put Hargreaves Petroleum / Hargreaves Fuel Services' address, The Pygmalion, 2-4 Market Street, Cleckheaton, as the location.

The story between Hargreaves and Charringtons is complex because of previous joint ventures, but as far I have been able to work out, Hargreaves were bought by the Coalite Group in 1986, who then merged Hargreaves' mostly northern fuel business with the mostly southern Charringtons business. Power, along with Freedom whom Hargreaves had bought in 1985, and then John Hudson's fuels business in about 1990, supplied about 130 sites in 1990 around the time I got the sticker, across Northern England, the Midlands, East Anglia, and North Wales, but this was the first time (as a 7-year old) I'd ever seen a "modern" Power garage that was actually open.

Curious figure made from rope and perched on the front of Chatterton House in Bristol. The figure looks somewhat forlorn maybe reflecting the life of the house's past inhabitant, the poet Thomas Chatterton who committed suicide at the age of 17 in 1770.

When Marian was really young, she had to get dentures. She came to us at Omni Dental for advice for what she could do for dentures because she didn't want adhesive dentures and the problems they come with. We advised her on dental implants, and over 38 years later, they're still doing wonders for her with constant use, and she has never regretted it!

I cannot speculate as to whether brown paper bags changed hands over this one or whether sitting Labor MPs who expect to lose their seats expect to get a board position with the gas explorer, or whether it was simply some stupid idea that seemed okay to the Labor Party heavies after a long lunch at Chinatown.

Local residents do not care about which. This will be fought.
