"Fifteen Ravine" was the name given by the Army to the shallow ravine, once bordered by fifteen trees, which ran at right angles to the railway about 800 metres south of the village of Villers-Plouich, but the cemetery is in fact in "Farm Ravine," on the east side of the railway line, nearer to the village. The cemetery, sometimes called Farm Ravine Cemetery, was begun by the 17th Welsh Regiment in April 1917, a few days after the capture of the ravine by the 12th South Wales Borderers. It continued in use during the Battle of Cambrai (November 1917) and until March 1918, when the ravine formed the boundary between the Third and Fifth Armies. On 22 March, the second day of the great German offensive, the ground passed into their hands after severe fighting, and it was not regained until the end of the following September. In March 1918, the cemetery contained 107 graves (now Plot I), but it was greatly enlarged after the Armistice when graves were brought in from the battlefields south-west of Cambrai and other cemeteries, including:- ARGYLE ROAD CEMETERY, BEAUCAMP, close to "Argyle Road," on the North side of the hamlet of Beaucamp. The hamlet was taken on the 24th-25th April 1917, by the 40th Division. The cemetery contained the graves of 38 soldiers from the United Kingdom, of whom eleven men of the 14th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders fell at Beaucamp on the 24th April, 1917, and twelve of other units in November and December, 1917. BOURLON GERMAN CEMETERY, a narrow strip of land between Bourlon Communal Cemetery and the Bourlon-Marquion road, in which were buried 173 soldiers from the United Kingdom (almost all unidentified) and about 100 German soldiers. MARCOING SUNKEN ROAD CEMETERY, on the Eastern slope of the Ravine running North-East from Villers-Plouich. It contained the graves of 75 officers and men from the United Kingdom (mainly of the Royal Naval Division) who fell in December 1917-April 1918, and four from New Zealand who fell at the end of September, 1918. Fifteen Ravine Cemetery now contains 1,264 Commonwealth burials and commemorations of the First World War. 740 of the burials are unidentified but there are special memorials to 44 casualties known or believed to be buried among them. Other special memorials commemorate ten men of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, buried in Argyle Road Cemetery, Beaucamp, whose graves were destroyed by shell fire. The cemetery was designed by Sir Herbert Baker.

Lowestoft’s third crossing officially named as project given final green light.

Suffolk County Council’s Cabinet has unanimously approved the building of the Lake Lothing Third Crossing in Lowestoft [25 August 2020], now officially named as the Gull Wing by children from Somerleyton Primary School.

Somerleyton Primary School pupils, including Jack and Hayden (pictured) thought up the name, Gull Wing. Headteacher, Louise Spall, explains their thinking behind it:

“The children wanted to come up with a name which reflected living by the seaside, but they also thought that the shape of bridge was really interesting. The V-shape of the new bridge looks like a bird’s wings and, of course, what seaside town is complete without gulls!

“They are really excited that their name is going to be part of Lowestoft’s history, it is something they can be proud of and tell their children in years to come.”

Tikal Temple I is the designation given to one of the major structures at Tikal. It also is known as the Temple of the Great Jaguar because of a lintel that represents a king sitting upon a jaguar throne.

Tikal National Park in El Peten, Guatemala.

Tikal is among the world's travel wonders, many calling Tikal one of the most spiritually powerful spots on earth. The monumental site with its towering pyramids looms out of the thick jungle canopy like stoic sentinels of ancient mysteries.

Tikal was once a wealthy metropolis of 100,000 inhabitants and the seat of power for the great Jaguar clan lords. Today, Tikal attracts archeologists from all around the globe and the wild-live surrounding the ruins makes it a naturalist's dream. Because of its importance and magnificent combination of nature and archaeological remains, Tikal has been declared a Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

The ruins of Tikal include more than 3,000 structures extending over six square miles and including palaces, temples, ceremonial platforms, ball courts, terraces, plazas, avenues and steam baths. The ancient Maya began building Tikal around 600 B.C., and for the next 1500 years the area was an important religious, scientific, and political center.

The Tikal National Park is not only home to an ancient Mayan City. Screeching howler monkeys and squawking parrots provide nature's soundtrack to all visitors in the area. From monkeys to white lipped peccary, brocket deer, coati-mundis, toucans, scarlet macaws, parrots, ocelots; even the seldom jaguar can occasionally be spotted. Along with many vegetation spices there is also an abundance of tropical flowers.

We have been given an assignment / challenge by Jonathan when we arrived (at the Mon Tribe/Village) in Sangklaburi, Thailand..

The assignment was to create a story focusing on the daily activities of the Mon village people, wherein the starting point of the story should be the bridge, which connects the Mon Village to the township of Sangklaburi..

We only have to choose five photos.. And those five photos should have a travel magazine 'quality'..

It was a cool assignment, but I had a hard time creating a story line.. So I thought 'what the heck, I could document whatever things that I see along this bridge'..

This was one of the five photos I submitted to Jonathan for evaluation..

This photo was taken at the Mon Village, Sangklaburi, Thailand

Built early 1900s, dedicated as Holy Trinity Anglican 1970. First services in schoolroom. The Aboriginal Mission Station was established 1868 with 600 acres for the Narungga people, in 1894 former residents from closed Poonindie Mission near Port Lincoln were moved to Point Pearce, station taken over by State Govt 1915, aboriginals given control 1972 with transfer of further land.

A service is held every Sunday in the: schoolroom . . . At present cultivation of the land has not been attempted, but this season a small piece now being ploughed is to be sowed and cut for hay, to supply the horses that, are required for the use of the station, and perhaps a small quantity may be saved for grain.” [Register 9 Mar 1874]

“The: Methodist Church has for many years given the people of the station a regular Sunday morning preaching service. Wet or dry, the ministers and lay preachers have faithfully fulfilled their appointments there, the former driving 12 miles, and the latter, some more, some less, to do so. . . the Anglican Church has in recent years given the natives a regular monthly Sunday afternoon, service. The present rector of the Maitland .parish has been most attentive to the wants of the .station, cheerfully travelling thither in all weathers. . . the manager Mr. F. Garnett, and Mr. D. Roper; the assistant manager . . . Every Sunday evening one or other of these conducts divine worship and preaches in the mission chapel.” [Register 20 Mar 1919]

As he has now been called to church work the Aborigines' Friends' Association, which controls the station on behalf of the Government, has requested the churches adjacent to the mission to conduct the religious services. The churches concerned are Anglican, Methodist and Congregational.” [News 31 May 1924]

The old Nelson Longflap given to me by Todd Boulanger last December has seen service on the Long Haul Trucker, regularly getting stuffed with gear on my various bike camping and touring excursions over the year. After all that wear and tear, the 30 year old bag needed some TLC. So I removed it from the LHT and brought it to my local outdoor repair guru, Matt at Mountain Soles. I picked it up on Tuesday.

Mountain Soles patched a couple places on the bottom of the bag, and also patched the area around the left buckle, as it was starting to pull away from the bag. They also replaced one of the flap snaps (ha!) that had fallen off. This required more patching. Another minor repair that I ended up doing was replacing the screw to the wooden dowel, as the original one here is MIA.

This is one of the things I love about traditional bags and their canvas: they can be repaired. Now hopefully I'll get several more years of life out of this bag. Now it will see duty on the Raleigh Crested Butte.

During the speech given on 14 May at the ceremony to celebrate Europe day, in the presence of Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman and Mayor of Vinnytsia Serhiy Morhunov, the Vice-President of the Congress praised the efforts made by the City of Vinnytsia in order to improve living conditions of citizens, to fight corruption and promote higher education of young people. She said these results were made possible by a dynamic and determined municipal policy within a peaceful Europe. She stated that Europe day symbolises the reconciliation between people after the Second World War and celebrates peace and unity in Europe. “We should never forget that it is the process of European construction that has allowed us to make peace with the past and to live without any major conflict since then” she underlined. Mentioning the crisis that have rocked European countries for several years – including the return of war in some parts of Europe and in Ukraine in particular – she said” we must find again the path towards political will and solidarity, to make our societies more prosperous and more inclusive”. Quoting the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Gudrun Mosler-Törnström concluded that “Ukraine has much work ahead of it and Europe is here to help”.

Given the cuts I'm surprised these haven't been sold off for scrap metal they are heavy enough.

interesting how the different light falls on them, they were open and face East/West.

I was given some Sprinkles red velvet cupcake mix from our tour guide as we couldnt make it to the bakery, on our trip to LA last September.

I finally had time to make them recently & I must admit they wernt too bad. Abit rich for 450 g of flour, sugar, food colour, cocoa & some pretty little dots. $14.00 US.The cake was very tender & not overly sweet & the cream cheese frosting was good too. It had loads of food colour in the mix as it turned your lips, teeth & tongue red (the kids thought it was funny!)

Have given up trying to catch a bus screened up for the 16B.

This one journey a day (schooldays) service runs from Slopefield Playing Fields to Broad Street along the 16A route and although there is a display for this on the screens most drivers stick with contract or change the route number before the bus reaches Union Street to stop Northfield passengers flagging it down.

The duty works the 419 school run first then to Slopefield and the bus then runs off service from Broad Street to Holburn Junction to start a peak 40 duty although that link ends with the service changes next month as the P&R needs one less bus in the afternoon peak due to the reduced frequency to Bridge of Don.

37634 prepares to make the turn into Broad Street.

This years Benno Premsela Lecture was given by the American novelist Matthew Stadler. His lecture, delivered in the Portuguese Synagogue in Amsterdam, asked "What is the interior?" Technological and political change—particularly the reach of digital technologies and state and market involvement in them—has made conventional notions of "the interior" obsolete. Stadler proposes a broader concept—the interior as the space of composition—and argues for the urgency of design work and research into this broader concept.

Stadlers five novels (including Allan Stein and Landscape: Memory) animate dream-like interiors within vividly described cityscapes that are equal parts historical and fantastic, in prose the American writer Lydia Davis calls "permeated with Nabokovian grace and intelligence." The late critic Guy Davenport esteemed him "among the foremost gifted, vigorous, and original novelists of our time."

Since working as literary editor of Nest: A Quarterly of Interiors, all six years of the much-missed journals existence Stadler has been a welcome literary voice in architecture and design, most recently with his new book Deventer (NAi/010 publishers), about the interplay of power and hope in the design process.

Given Jag has had almost two decades to perfect the new model, it's disappointing the F-Pace is not a benchmark. Having said that, it's still a beautifully designed and engineered SUV that has the soul of its sports car stablemates, combined with space and practicality few of its rivals can match.

On the way up I had come to a junction and took a path which looked easier. It wasn't. It was a scrambling nightmare over wet and slippery rocks - more climb in parts than walk. Down below the other path sat, its easy steps taunting me.

And then, with just a little to go to Stickle Tarn the weather turned. I was stuck - getting back down on the scramble path would be a nightmare. Going up would be a nightmare.

Feeling out of my depth and lugging a heavy rucksack that didn't make scrambling easy I decided down was the more sensible option. It took me absolutely ages, constantly under (probably rather paranoid) fear of slipping. When I arrived back at the safety of this well made path, I was feeling a bit of a wreck.
