# Herbst -Volksfest in Nürnberg : Geisterbahn-ghost train (ride)

#A funfair or simply fair (e.g., "county fair", "state fair") is a small to medium sized traveling fair primarily composed of stalls and other amusements. Larger fairs such as the permanent fairs of cities and seaside resorts might be called a fairground, although technically this should refer to the land where a fair is traditionally held.

Straight from the camera.

From the archives... Had the marvelous opportunity to visit the Linnanmäki amusement park in October after the closing time for four hours! Ofcourse I had to take a family portrait of the skeletons in front of the ghost train! :)

Halloween Advent 2010 - Figure Calendar

"The engine with murderous blood was damp

And was brilliantly lit with a brimstone lamp;

An imp, for fuel, was shoveling bones,

While the furnace rang with a thousand groans.

The boiler was filled with lager beer

And the devil himself was the engineer;

The passengers were a most motley crew:

Church member, atheist, Gentile, and Jew.

Rich men in broad cloth, beggars in rags,

Handsome young ladies, and withered old hags,

Yellow and black men, red, brown, and white,

All chained together... O God, what a sight!"

Happy Halloween everyone!!

The Bluebell Railway with your final Journey. Ghost trains running all week, a few places left!

empty rails always remind me of the scene in fried green tomatoes where the character evelyn couch (played by kathy bates) "hears" the sound of an invisible passing train near the old whistlestop cafe as the wind it creates stirs the air...

We take a little tea break in the ghost train, we have been relatively busy up and till now..a quick brew and we off, a great day of lools with Luckypants and PeterC4

The Ghost Train is an annual event in Chesapeake. The 1 1/4 mile main trail between the entrance and the Northwest River is filled with static displays and the "Ghost Train", wooden wagons pulled by a tractor, takes people down the trail at night where live actors are added to the spooky displays. The local community is heavily involved every year.

Carter's Steam Fair in Gosport Hampshire. A traditional style family owned Funfair. Only 3 steam driven rides on show today but great fun to walk round and view anyway. Loved it :-)

This wasn't as distinctively "light trails" as I'd hoped because the floodlights over the crossing are so bright that the blur of the train mostly overpowers the light trails. I like that this one captures a flash from the overhead wires. For what it's worth this train was decorated in James Bond 007 livery.

Great Southern & Western Railways No. 186 steaming across the Leixlip viaduct just outside Leixlip Louisa Bridge station on it's way from Dublin Connolly to Mullingar with an RPSI Ghost Train steam special.

The water in the foreground is the Royal Canal, the large viaduct in Leixlip carries the railway, the canal and the towpath across the river Rye. This shot was taken from the towpath on the viaduct. The Leixlip viaduct is a strange beast. It's a fairly small bridge over the river Rye with a massive earthen embankment running over it. This means that there are trees and bushes growing all the way up the viaduct, so when you're standing at the top you'd be forgiven for not noticing that you're on an artificial viaduct rather than a very steep hill.

No. 186 seems to have been working very hard on this run, that or the coal was just very wet, but she was pouring out a hell of a lot of very dirty smoke.

No. 186 is a class J15 0-6-0 mainline locomotive preserved by the Irish Rail Preservation Society. You can read more about her on their website.

This image was generated by tonemapping a single RAW file and then tweaking the result using Aperture's Dodge & Burn plugin.

I also generated a monochrome version of this shot.

This shot featured on my blog as Photo of the Week 89 & 90 - Steam Loco No.186.

I reworked an earlier photo to submit into a photo competition. This one took best projected image of the month!

The relative brightness of the lights at Abercynon station and the darkness of the undercarriage has resulted in this Arriva Trains Wales pacer unit from Barry Island to Merthyr Tydfil appearing to have no wheels, and be floating away to its final destination of the day.

An evening at the Fair!

Hamish decided to brave the Ghost Train. Angus was rather concerned about his welfare!

These old “dark rides,” as they are known, are becoming a thing of antiquity. The back of the building is built on an incline and the cars “descend” on frightening scenes and spooky sound effects. I used to love these as a kid. Wait. I still do ;-)

Railroad station of Garub under moonlight. Garub had to thank his existence to its strategic location and productive springs in the Namib desert. Caused by the proclamation of the forbidden Diamond Area the settlement had been left. Today is the name Garub affiliate with the desert horses. Since 2001 was the section between Aus and Lüderitz completely renewed. On 19th November of 2014 the first train reached Lüderitz since 18 years. By today it was the only one...

So here's how this works. Take the most wonderful bit of railway in Southern England. Take a three shot HDR image off a bridge and then wait with the camera set on shutter priority and lots of darkening filters for the Dawlish Express to turn up.... and wait... and wait. You can admire my sunburn another day! Forgot the tripod as usual so this is all handheld.

thx littlenelly for naming this capture!

A little something for Halloween. If you like ridiculously distorted, over-driven psycho-blues-a-billy, howling wolves, growling monsters, people screaming, skulls, skeletons and, erm, trains, you might like this. If you don't, there will be a night bus along shortly...
