Here's Old #40, 101 years old, her work done for the day waiting to go in the barn. #40 is affectionately known as 'The Ghost Train' for the way she was saved from oblivion.
The Ghost Train is an annual event in Chesapeake. The 1 1/4 mile main trail between the entrance and the Northwest River is filled with static displays and the "Ghost Train", wooden wagons pulled by a tractor, takes people down the trail at night where live actors are added to the spooky displays. The local community is heavily involved every year.
For the last few years, I've heard the telltale rumble of a freight train at night, on what I thought were commuter-only rails.
I'd heard rumors that Amtrak ran nocturnal ballast trains out to the Glen Mills quarry but had never actually seen one. Finally, tonight, I caught the elusive ghost.

At night, the park belongs to the raccoons, who wander around searching for food. They must wonder why there are so many people in the park after dark and be happy about all the popcorn which is spilled.
