Taken at Great Sand Dunes National Monument.
Aside from it being hot, what really stood out to me was how silent the environment around me was. Apart from the people around, it was silent. Almost awe-inspiring. Loved it.
I wanted to get my 365 out of the way early (is that sad?) because today's gonna be a busy one. Hence, a snapshot of some of my get-ready stuff, which makes me appear to love pink a lot more than I do. In reality, I'm feeling pretty much the opposite of this photo. I'd love nothing more than to wear pajamas to work today. Or, better yet, stay in my pajamas at home.
365 - Day 35
The new Black Wildebeest (Connochaetes gnou) calf is more than halfway out and its front feet are on the ground. This is about 9 minutes after the first image.
My travels around the UK by car for three weeks with my son. June/July 2019 England.
On a drive around the Altarnun area in the evening. Having a look at Launceston Castle. Day five we are staying in Altarnun tonight.
Set on a large natural mound, Launceston Castle dominates the surrounding landscape. Begun soon after the Norman Conquest, its focus is an unusual keep consisting of a 13th-century round tower built by Richard, Earl of Cornwall, inside an earlier circular shell-keep. The tower top can be reached via an internal staircase but once reached, offers breathtaking views of the historic town and countryside.
Once the administrative headquarters for the Earl of Cornwall, it was a significant location where control could be kept over the various estates in the area.
The castle has a colourful history as a prison of which George Fox, founder of the Quakers, was the most famous prisoner. He suffered harsh confinement here in 1656. Launceston Castle was also used as the base for the Cornish Royalist defence of the county. You can explore the long history of the castle in a display which traces 1,000 years, with finds from site excavations.

Second rev of the activated charcoal getter for Sitelle.
The first revision of the getter, a double-sided, double-chambered design based roughly off the GL Scientific getter for the Polycold PCC cold head, wound up not fitting in the cryostat. The flex for the feed-through, which was already pretty close to the getter in the original design, wound up being longer than expected, and caused a thermal short. As an interim measure we machined off the lower chamber of one of the getters so we could get back on task.
But I still had to design a new one. I had all kinds of grand schemes of making another CNC-based design. But we hit a schedule crunch, and the CNC mill at work was busy cranking out new filter frames for another instrument. Sooo...
I designed this one to be made on conventional hand-cranked machines. The top and bottom plate are 2mm 6061 aluminum. The sides are 0.010" thick x 1" wide high purity copper strip. The lower plate has three 1mmx1mm grooves cut in it to take the copper strips. The top plate has a recess to match the outer and inner groove, and has a bunch of holes drilled through it to let gas pass. The three strips were coated with Stycast resin, and the cavity was filled with activated charcoal. The charcoal is capped with a 1-micron glass filter, and then with the top plate. The whole mess is sealed on all four seams with Stycast.
In the end I think this was a better design than the original, even though the original won hands-down on looks, and this one literally cannot be serviced. There's more volume for getter material in this one, so the getter has more overall capacity, even if the pump speed is a little lower because of the smaller aperture. Also, the materials are much thinner than in the original design, so this getter should cool down faster than the original. That helps to ensure that it starts pumping well before the rest of the camera gets cold enough to condense water vapor.
I won't be able to test the performance of this getter until next week.

A trip to the Beloit Farmers Market took longer than expected so I was late to the Hackett Neighborhood Cleanup Day & Resource Fair at the Beloit Historical Society. I did get there in time to see Jeremy Flanagan showing off the rig that brings Santa to town each year.

Captioned: "Get it whiles it's hot" This US Army publicity photo taken in Northern Ireland shows Private Herbert Berd from Hudson Minnesota serving food to Warren Pederson, of Grand Rapids, Minnesota.
Captioned and dated, 16 March 1942, it's probable the photo was taken at an earlier date. Pederson is holding the plate from his mess kit and cup from his canteen. Both men are from the 34th Infantry Division.
I'm serious. I can't seem to get rid of it, and I need some help, in nice simple language about how to. I'm not on cable TV. I'm on a converter box that lets a very limited number of channels through. Up until recently I could get 3 or 4 public broadcasting stations, very clearly, and one ABC channel pretty clear. My daughter, bless her heart, helped me get it hooked up so I could access DVD player and VHS player, and those pictures do not have the black rectangle. Only the Television images. Any ideas, please?
P. S. It is not about what show is on; I just picked anything to take a picture of where it is black. Thanks.
