Mrs. W. and I recently bought a new scanner, and I'm just now getting around to trying it out on some vintage fambly pix. I'm about to leave town for a bit but after that there may well be an avalanche of these old shots on my teh Flickr.
This is a view of my family's back yard at our Seattle house. The print is dated Sept. 1972, but the picture must have been taken some time before that - by then, we'd moved to Utah. This swingset was one of the things I missed the most after we left. In my estimation, it was the coolest swingset EVER and indeed it was pretty neat. Look closely and you can see that it had a ladder on one end, a catwalk all the way across the top, and a slide at the other end. Plus one of those kewl seesaw-type swings and the four-seater carriage sort.
Of course, back then, the swingset was much bigger - at least 100 feet tall and a quarter mile long.
Also shown: the sandbox and my belovéd Big Wheel. I believe the Big Wheel made the trip to Utah with us.
I'm not sure who the kids are in the shot. The sandy-haired chirren in the middle could well be me, and the boys in the carriage-swing could be my brother and his friend Eddie.
I'm probably stating the obvious here but a half decent landscape picture does very much depend upon good lighting.
I've seen this view several times and on each occasion it looks different. In the morning, when the light is colder and in the opposite direction, the mountains look mysterious. In the summer, when the sun is high, they look flat.
Yesterday, in the warm light of late afternoon, I think they looked their best.
I only had a narrow window of opportunity because half an hour earlier or later and the scene looked very different.

Four national forests partnered with See You at the Top (Syatt), Tennessee Aquatics Program (TAP), and National Association of Black Scuba Divers (NABS) to host the first-ever Get Black Outside (GBO) events in June 2021. In total, the Forest Service welcomed 185 participants from black-led organizations based in Washington, Jacksonville, Nashville, and Cleveland. The events included a variety of outdoor experiences such as camping, hiking, biking and kayaking but the centerpiece activity was the opportunity to explore the water through snorkeling. Participants also engaged in discussions of the cultural history of the areas they were visiting, including how the history of these areas has left a legacy of exclusion that persists even today. In 2019, data collected from National Park Service, USDA Forest Service and Fish and Wildlife Service surveys found that 88% to 95% of all visitors to public lands are white. The national non-profit collaborative GBO is partnering with the Forest Service to change that statistic.
GBO was founded by Syatt and the TAP to advocate for nature equity, with a goal that people of color have the opportunity to engage in nature. GBO goals are well aligned with Forest Service goals to ensure that outdoor spaces are welcoming and safe for all people. When GBO approached Zanethia Barnett, a Research Fisheries Scientist with Forest Service Southern Research Station, about hosting GBO events on national forests she quickly recognized the potential for pairing existing Forest Service recreational activities with the emerging Forest Service river snorkeling program and local history discussions to provide GBO participants with a unique and engaging outdoor experience. Several national forests stepped forward to provide amazing events in 2021. The organizers and partners were recognized with both a Regional Forester’s and a Chief’s Award in 2021 for their efforts in fulfilling the Forest Service goal of “Delivering Benefits to the Public by Connecting People with Nature”.
