The Pratt & Whitney J58 (company designation JT11D-20) was a jet engine that powered the Lockheed A-12, and subsequently the YF-12 and the SR-71 aircraft. Twin J58s pushed the SR-71 to a cruising speed of 2,211 MPH.

The J58 was a single-spool turbojet with an afterburner. It had a unique bleed from the compressor to the afterburner which gave increased thrust at high speeds.

This feature caused it to be referred to as a turboramjet in some writings.

It delivered 25,000 pound-force (110 kN) of thrust without afterburner (dry) and 34,000 (150 kN) with afterburner (wet).

General characteristics

Type: afterburning turbojet with compressor bleed bypass

Length: 180 in (4,600 mm) (an additional 6 in (150 mm) at max. temp.)

Diameter: 50 in (1,300 mm)

Dry weight: approx. 6,000 lb (2,700 kg)

Components

Compressor: 9-stage, axial flow

Combustors: Cannular 8 burner cans in an annular combustion casing

Turbine: two-stage axial flow

Fuel type: JP-7, JP-4 or JP-5 for emergency refuelling from any tanker (Mach 1.5 limit)

Oil system: Pressure spray return system with Fuel-cooled oil cooler

Performance

Maximum thrust: 34,000 pounds-force (151.24 kN)

wet, 25,000 pounds-force (111.21 kN) dry

Overall pressure ratio: 7.5 at take off

Bypass ratio: low bypass ratio to afterburner

Air mass flow: 300 lb/s (8,200 kg/min) at take-off power

Specific fuel consumption: 1.9 lb/lbf (190 kg/kN) per hour

Thrust-to-weight ratio: 5.23 lbf/lb (0.0513 kN/kg)

This is the "Get Pushed" challenge issued by syahrel azha hashim with the theme of "Lightbulb". I was given the freedom to shoot anything, but it had to include a lightbulb. Here's my take...

With the fresnel lens, this 1 kilowatt bulb produces a beam visible under favorable conditions up to 15 miles away. I really liked the glow from this angle. The shot in the comments, you can see that it has a completely different glow.

This lightbulb resides at the Point Piños Lighthouse located on the northern most tip of the Monterey Peninsula. This marks the entrance to Monterey Bay and a definite hazard to the Mariner. The stone lighthouse was put into service in February 1, 1855. Everything from the building, lenses and prisms are original. It is the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the west coast and is listed on the national register of historic places.

He had a wander around in the garden for a while and then decided to take a closer look at me. He jumped up onto this little pine border edging and gazed at me fluttering his little wings expectantly, but to no avail as I had nothing on me to give him. He was about 4ft away from me at this point :)

The Barb City Stompers played at Cornfest this year. While I'm all for trains, this was not the ideal location to put the band as they played at CornFest this year. Despite the engineer laying on the horn loud and proud, without missing a beat...the band played on.

Audrey is rising up--straight to the top: and it took her a while to get to the top of all those 12-inch stairs! Scrawny to Brawny all the way.

Getting into it: time for the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Three packs of stinky, gooey concoctions of herbs and whatnot are applied to different areas of my two legs. They are left on for four hours. After they have been taken off, the pain in each area has increased dramatically. Understandably, I asked them not to do that again.

They said someday you’ll find

Grey Squirrel.

Calderstones Park, Liverpool.

Today I meet up with a person from Flickr who lives in New Zealand and we just happened to be at Surfers that same time. We have just had some lunch and now we are wanting to watch the feeding of the Pelicans here at back doors of the Charis Seafood shop. this all happen around 1.30pm except for Mondays.

The Pelicans start arriving hour or so before and wait around for their fed of fish. The fish carcass are tossed into the air, most get one fish and move off but some wait around for some more!.

My squirrel pal was lying on the table feasting on the sunflower seeds I put out for the jays. The white-winged doves chased him off after a bit.

as i went further up, i met two other climbers who were coming down from the summit. by then the clouds were all around us and they told me "it's horrible up there!" and were worried that i attempted to go up alone. i knew they were right, because you need crampons and maybe ice axes for the last part (i didn't have those with me) and also the wind became really really strong and sight was getting worse. i told them i would only go as far as there is solid rock for me to stand on and that's what i did. everything further would have been stupid.

so that was it, my ~85% climb of mt. taranaki. it definitely was fun, although i never had areal chance to make it to the top. if i ever come back to new zealand, i will do the whole thing! :]

the moment i was back at north egmont, i decided to do one of the tramps around the mountain. i went for the three day pouakai circuit. there will be some more pictures from this trip which will be the absolutely last of my new zealand pictures.. D':

What a great day finally getting to shoot the awesome model Edward Harrington and making a new friend in MUA/Hair Stylist Holly Kapsalis while hanging out at John Cousert's studio.

This was what I call a digital polaroid, where I shoot the back of the Deardorff 8x10 camera to see how things are looking. I should do a series of these, they always look fabulous.

Another Run'ography shot from Cambria, California. With all the rain coming down right now I would have loved to post a rain shot but I do not have any worth posting, gotta work at it before it stops raining. Have a great Saturday and stay dry my friends.

At the outlet of Lake Wanaka and the start of the Clutha River ..May 1, 2016 Central Otago in the South Island of New Zealand.

Wanaka, a resort town on New Zealand's South Island, is set on the southern end of its namesake lake with views of snowcapped mountains. It's the gateway to the Southern Alps' Mount Aspiring National Park, a wilderness of glaciers, beech forests and alpine lakes. Treble Cone and Cardrona ski resorts are near the park. Just outside the town is the outdoor maze and sculpture gallery of Puzzling World.

This is a Sandhill Crane that I saw at Circle B ranch in Lakeland, Florida. They flew in and landed right in front of me and started vocalizing as I approached. I got the idea that they would prefer me to leave.

You wouldn't believe how loud they are. I was about 8-12 feet away and I got as I could with 300mm. They weren't really moving away, just side to side constantly turning away from me.

I also had to keep my eyes open and not fall in the water while I am looking through my viewfinder chasing and dancing around these birds, trying to get a photo. Ha!

Get intimate in between songs. Fun stuff.

This is my response to the "get pushed "challenge by leadingedgephotography- who has such a great variety of photo techniques in her stream. She asked me to do a concept shot based on these lyrics:

Reaching for something in the distance

So close you can almost taste it

Release your inhibitions

Feel the rain on your skin

No one else can feel it for you

Only you can let it in

Well I never do concept shots- I am much more concrete, and even though what I came up with has certainly been done before by many other people, this push made me think. And that's good.

It's dark - the sun had been down for a while and the rain clouds were coming in. Still, a beautiful evening in Algonquin Provincial park.
