About a month ago I left the camera at home and went for a walk with a friend along some sea cliffs just south of Sydney - it was an area I had not explored before and I wanted to use my eyes and look at different compositions. It was a great morning exploring and imaging how it would look through the camera lens. I came across this spot and I knew I would return - but it took a month for me to come back because I was waiting on some good cloud to a nice long exposure and of course some really rough sea conditions (the sea was pumping the morning I took this image).
This was a solo shoot and my senses were heightened - I was also standing about a metre from the edge of a large cliff with an 80 metre drop - thats as close as I get and I was wary. I was after an image that fairly captured the rugged beauty of the sea cliffs that dominate the Sydney coast. After taking this image a rain storm (you can see it in the left of the left hand side of the sky) rolled in and I got soaked!!
I processed using a very different technique to try and bring out the highlights and the darks using the one image - double processing its called and its a technique I will be using again - very effective. The image was processed in PS CC.

it was pizza night...!! Which means it was beer night for me. We always anguish over what we should get and we always get the same thing. Very quick contactless service and the pizza was delicious. OH, and so was the beer. A fine local product.
I lovee this shot.
Took me forever to get.
And I scratched myself 7 times in the process, but I love how it turned out.
Ugh.
I need to borrow Weirdly's camera and remote.
Its EXTREMELY hard getting like that when your short, and the most your camera has is a 10 second timer -.-
I've been playing around with the settings, hence the quality is a bit better ;)

Insect eyes are really difficult to get and often look smooth until you hit the right spot for the focus...... and then the multi-segment eye lenses leave you wondering how they ever see anything as we would?
A frustratingly noisy and not-well-focused shot of a humpback whale breaching. When photographing wildlife, you rarely get the shot you want, so you take the best of the shots you did get and call it a better day.

My loot for this month
Taking pictures of what I get and writing down the prices is my way of keeping an eye on my spending.
I know there are people who get a kick out of looking at loot (I do!), so that's why I share this with you all ^_^
discovered these three new babes in the barn this morning with their mama Toffee.
i'd meant to get and go out in the middle of the night to check on the three due ewes but didn't do it.
glad it went smoothly, and that i slept through the night.
hoping we're working our way into a more dependable breeding flock that can birth without assistance!
she tried to reject the smallest lamb, head butting him away from her and into the walls of the barn, but that little lamb is being strong and persistent, nursing regularly. Later in the day she's been encouraging it to nurse more than not.
Barred Owl - Shenandoah National Park
This is a re-process and crop of an Owl photo I captured back in December of 2008.
Back in May I learned that one of my Bear photos had been stolen from the Web, then mass printed and mass inserted into custom wooden frames that were being sold in gift shops and waysides throughout Shenandoah National Park. Photo Thieves Identified The offending company is Wisconsin based Gift Works Plus.
I learned a lot about photo copyrights from that ordeal, and most of that information I have shared in this previous post: www.flickr.com/photos/lwbrown/8881919764. And for this very reason is why I now place a Copyright watermark on all my Web posted photos, as my signature watermark obviously did not serve the purpose very well in this digital age.
Unless one has their photos officially registered with the U.S.Copyright office, chances are you'll be lucky to actually break even after pursuing a photo thief through the judicial system. This blog by Ian Plant clearly paints that picture: Photography, Copyright and the Internet.

My Retribution
There is more than one way to skin a cat, fight fire with fire, an eye for an eye, etc., etc. After realizing I didn't have much chance for any monetary action, I put my thinking hat on to figure out how I was going to retaliate. Then it hit me - give them bad publicity on the grandest stage of all: the Internet! So I put my web development skills to use and for $3.99 a year I purchased a domain (www.GiftWorksPlus.us) and then used a free site builder tool (actually it was a rather lame tool but to avoid paying hosting fees I opted for it). I built a web site that clearly depicts the dirtbag company that Gift Works Plus really is.
In a few short weeks, the search engines started indexing it and my little $3.99 site is now listed on the first page of search results alongside the dirtbags themselves! HA! (see screenshot below in first comments box, or click here) They deserve all the bad publicity they get, and are gonna get, for a long time to come - because I'm gonna keep chipping away at this stone for as long as it takes. And for $3.99 a year, I may just develop a few more sites to drive the point home even further. HA!
.

The very first person I met here on the Banks has remained a dear friend since day one. He rented an apartment to me in the off season during house hunting for a beach house of my very own. He allowed dogs... I had a cat, Loki, who ended up very sick the week before I was supposed to come down. I called...I explained and asked if I could push it off for a week. He very kindly said yes. That week went by and the cat was not that much better and needed to be subcutaneously given fluids every other day for another week. I called again and asked if his pet policy included cats. There was a hesitation and so I explained the situation. He asked if the cat was trained...no accidents outside his litter box. Yes, he is and he sleeps a lot and is very well behaved. He took pity on me and rented to us...we searched for a house for 8 days...and late on the 8th day found one of interest and so we asked about extending the stay until the upcoming Monday, after asking what it would cost to do that. This allowed us to get all the offer stuff and beginning negotiations in order before heading home. When we went to pay him the extra, he told us not to...that extra time was no big deal. My first experience in what was to be my new home began with the kindness of this stranger. I knew as he said goodbye when we left that he would be a good friend. I was also certain I would get his dog to like me!!!
We kept in touch thru the process of getting and renovating the house...and he kindly showed me around the island giving me hints of places good to eat and things to see, and where to shop! Rudder the Beach Dog was friendly but not exactly sure of me. On one of my jaunts to see something new, the wild beaches of Hatteras Nat’l seashore, I was pretty certain that my chances to make Rudder like me were dashed when Butch made him get into the back seat, telling him “Susan is our friend and you need to let her ride in the front!” When we got out, he took off over the dunes, found a driftwood stick and promptly dropped it at Butch's feet to throw, ignoring me completely. Sigh..... but then on the next appearance over the dune, he ran right past Butch and dropped the stick at MY feet! I was over the moon happy...I had been accepted into the fold!
Rudder is now receiving Radiation Therapy, after developing seizures and finding the cause is a tumor. I am assisting in helping to raise money for the balance of the radiation and vet bills ...3 more weeks of therapy to go. It is the least I can do for my special friends. Rudder is doing so much better after his first 3 weeks. The glint of playful mischief is back in his eyes and his beach walks are met with playfulness to other dogs. I am praying that this works for him because he is such a special friend, and is the sun rising and setting each day for his owner. They live on a sailboat...his owners dream come true and they are far from home at the moment as the tumor was found on their winter trip south. 4:30am wake up call to try and beat the Ft Lauderdale traffic and make the 2-3 hour drive to have the therapy and then back to the boat...another 2-3 hour drive. Prayers for Rudder and my dear friend Butch are what I ask. The support is as important as anything I can raise to help them financially...so please keep them in your thoughts and prayers for me. Thank you.
PS. Rudder is a Border Collie and hands down THE smartest dog I have ever met..it is scary sometimes how much he understands...and I honestly can say he is smarter than some humans I have met!!!
I’ve probably mentioned everything that I could describe in words in the first northern lights post about this spectacular nature show so instead of focusing on that in this post I will tell you a funny story about me photographing the northern lights two weeks ago.
I’ve been wanting to capture this on camera for quite a while now and I’ve done a fair amount of research into the appropriate exposure times asking how intense does the light get and so on. About a month before the trip I also decided to invest in a new tripod going for a really nice Gitzo carbon tripod and magnesium head with which I’m very happy. The northern lights would be a perfect test for the tripod so I happily packed it in my checked-in bags thinking I’ll get some killer, stable shots!
We arrive to Oslo, from Dubai, via Doha and after hanging around the baggage belt for an hour or so we get told that our luggage never made it. To complement this great news we also get told that the luggage cannot be found in the system and that Qatar Airways, the airline we flew there does not have flights to Oslo until only 2 days later. We head to the hotel in Oslo, trying to make alternate plans for the next 3 days of snowboarding (as all our snow gear was also checked-in), when later in the evening we get a call from the airport telling us that the luggage was found and further to that, Qatar Airways was clever enough to send it with a flight to Copenhagen and then from there get it transferred to a short flight to Oslo. It should be with us by the time we get to the hotel in the ski resort. Great! Problem solved! But wait, the story doesn’t finish here…
Three days later we get to Tromsø and I start carrying the tripod attached to my bag in the event that we stay late in town and the northern lights start showing up. This doesn’t happen in the first night and for the second day, we’re about to leave for the overnight camp to wait for the lights when I suddenly look at my tripod, look at my camera and realize that I have left the tripod plate in Dubai attached to my back-up camera! It’s very difficult to describe my feelings at that particular moment, but I’m sure you can guess.
As a result, all my northern lights images were taken by carefully balancing the camera on bags, snow or any rocks that I could find. I guess the moral of this story is, make the best of what you have with you and if everything else fails, just enjoy the show. :)

A NF&D brakeman waves the power from a westbound freight back to its train at Lawrenceville, VA on April 16, 1979. Some things you never forget. The train had just made a set off on the track on the far side of the power. The track was so bad that the wheels were sinking into the ground and the units pitching in opposite directions so badly that the drawheads were binding. I learned, from a distance, just how bad the track could get and the train not derail!
Ruby washing off the salt before going to the pool before going back to the sea, before going back to the pool, yeah you get..., and on and on and on.
BNSF 8776 leads a string of coal down the grade in Colorado Springs, CO.
If you read the description in my previous upload, you know I was dealing with ice and snow build up on my wheels making my car vibrate something fierce if I got up to about 50mph. Not wanting to endure the shaking or risk causing damage to my vehicle, I decided to minimize my travels. The closest I could get and still have some scenery was right here in the parking lot of the southern trailhead of the New Santa Fe Trail. While this scene looks rural and out there, it's really not. Directly behind me is a major 4-lane road and to my right is Interstate 25 and accompanying businesses and restaurants, but the lens gives the impression that you're out in rural, pristine Colorado. Shhhh, don't tell anybody!
The New Santa Fe Trail, as its name suggests, is a trail that follows the old ATSF roadbed between this spot and Palmer Lake, CO. Once the ATSF was ripped up, the Joint Line became a single-track main south of Palmer Lake. If you start here and walk north, you will have gained about 1,200' of elevation. I haven't made the hike, but I've been on parts of the trail and it's beautiful. Plus, there are trains!

Every year I always look forward to the annual Barbie Fan Club Exclusive Platinum Label doll and this year it is Blush Fringed Gown Barbie® Doll the first doll in The Pink Collection designed by Carlyle Nuera. I was definitely drawn to the gown. There’s just no doubt that this is a must-have piece. Layers of ombré pink fringe reminiscent of Givenchy, Marchesa and Versace, just to name a few, is just to-die-for. The intricate embroidery of birds and flowers and the hand-applied beading on the bodice is impressive as it goes all the way to the back where in the years past they would leave out the back bare for cost cutting measures like with the Classic Evening Gown Barbie. With that this doll retails at a whopping $100 price tag where previously annual Platinum Label dolls were priced at $85. Luckily as a Barbie Signature (formerly Barbie Collector, formerly The Barbie Collection) at a Platinum Level Membership you will get a $30 quarterly reward at a $100 minimum purchase so her price came down to $70. To get a doll from Mattel in this quality we need to shell out that much money.
As always these beautiful things come with flaws and with Blush Fringed Gown it would have to be the mermaid silhouette of the dress. Had it been a column silhouette it would have been perfect as the fringe would just fall down neatly. Because it is a mermaid silhouette the fringe spreads out exposing the tulle underneath leaving gaps in certain areas... and gurl it’s a mess!
What I love about this doll though is the styling. I definitely love the simple behind-the-ear hairstyle exposing the sculpted fringe earrings, a pair that we’ve previously seen from Madam Lavinia. She has a bracelet that we’ve seen from Mutya Barbie. She also comes with a pair of shoes that we’ve seen from the BFMC collection last year. With Barbie I don’t mind the sculpted plastic accessories as they have been the standard for the brand for a very long time. So when I buy these Signature dolls I know what I’m getting and I don’t mind them being the way they are.
Knowing Carlyle Nuera as a designer we’ve come to expect something different, something new, something that has never been done before. Leave it to him to design something that is unique. For Blush Fringed Gown the use of the Claudette sculpt in a pale Nostalgic skin tone is a great surprise. Who among the designers at Mattel would have thought of that? Of course! Only Carlyle. While her facial structure is reminiscent of supermodels like Natasha Poly, Cara Delevigne and Coco Rocha I can’t help but stare at her with ambiguity. Is she black? Is she white? What could her racial background be? That’s just one of the reasons why this release was a pivotal moment. There’s no Barbie in the Barbie Signature line-up like her. With Carlyle there are no boundaries and that’s what I admire about him.
The face design on this doll left me undecided on whether I love it or not because this is like an old style made new. While I do love the fact that her face screening was done in the traditional method, I look at the details of her eyes and they are very reminiscent of Barbies from the 90s. We’ve seen this style done on dolls that Carlyle designed recently from the 2017 Quinceanera Barbie and from the 2016 Moschino Barbie. This blurs the line between Playline and Signature. I do get the nostalgia aspect of it but the cartoonish style cheapens the look of the dolls. Another reason why I’m partial with the face screening would be the lines on her eyes. They’re not as precise and they’re not as clean as in past Platinum Label dolls like Glimmer of Gold and Pinch of Platinum. While I do love the idea of the blue winged eyeliner it just looks flat to me. Had it been painted in a shimmery finish it would have made a world of difference. I do miss the glamorous face designs of Collector level Barbies and lately the dolls have not been up to par. From the 2017 line-up the only doll that really gave a Collector quality screening that I love was Golden Galaxy Barbie, the 2017 Barbie Convention Souvenir Doll.
While there are some disappointments on Blush Fringed Gown I still think this is one of the best dolls from Barbie Signature this year. The fact that she is the first articulated annual Platinum Label doll (in the body combo of my preference), she is also exceptional in so many ways. I love the styling, the choice of face sculpt, and definitely the fashion. I am looking forward to the next doll in the series and I’m crossing my fingers that it’s a doll with the darkest Mattel skin tone. That has never been done for an annual Platinum Label doll and it’s been long overdue.

This was just a quick shot I took whilst walking Beth this morning. Just trying to get to know my new lens and practice shooting in full manual (scary stuff for a lazy photographer like me!)
Technically this is not the best shot, but I kinda liked it anyway. I know a lot of people hate the distortion fisheye produces, but I find it fascinating. I love the feeling of 'other-worldliness' you get and I can't wait to experiment with it a little more! If nothing else, it's given my creative side a much-needed kick up the backside!
Have a good weekend everyone! :-)

Candidate for 52 Weeks For Dogs, my Jake.
A few vacation days in the mountains of Western North Carolina-- a bit scarce on Flickr.
I am really working at the utter limits of my point and shoot here. These came out all noise, and thank goodness for Topaz Simplify to play with the image a bit. But now I'm looking at the Nikon D5100 (because it has a swivel screen) and the Sony Nex 5 (because it's so lightweight-- this may clench the deal for me) and has a CMOS sensor, and a movable screen. I welcome all camera advice also. Heavy just won't work for me, as I like to hike and walk my dogs and take my camera with me. But I want the best sensor I can get, and a camera that does better in low light and in-doors and takes clearer photos.
I welcome all critiques. That's how I learn. I'm not thin-skinned.

I like buying sheets for the quantity of fabric I get, and though this is thrifted, it's in great shape. You can can thrifted linens that are brand new. I love zinnias, and though these may be mums (?) I still love this pattern.

Mid-August is a great time for photographing waders [shorebirds]. Not only are there still some adults in summer plumages but the fresh-clad juveniles, which tend to be less wary, are also present. Just find the patch of seaweed they are feeding on and sit down a couple of hours before high tide. Get as low as possible, ignore all the insect bites you are getting and allow the water to push the birds close to you.
Using this strategy in Nova Scotia I once ended up with a small group of Least Sandpipers roosting on my out-stretched legs!
Curlew Sandpipers tend to come in 'big-years' with either none or lots. 2020 looks like being a BIG year with several spanking juveniles in different places in Northumberland. This was one of two at St Mary's Isle.
Most birders spend early autumn trying to turn funny Dunlin into Curlew Sands but once you see one you wonder "Why was I bothering" as the real thing is pretty obvious.
A busy day recovering from yesterdays bbq and catching some rays was had today. tried something a little different as photographing so many flowers at the moment !
Hope you have enjoyed the lovely british summer...that may be all we get !! And of course to those further afield I hope you all had a good weekend !
Thanks for views, comments and faves, all are very much appreciated :)
The demolition of what remains of Hatfield Colliery is continuing and a large amount of the structure which, if I understand correctly, cleaned the coal has been taken down. I found the row of almost A-shaped concrete pillars which supported it quite fascinating. There is also part of the conveyor belt hanging from the structure.
Had I known this was to continue when it did, I would have returned to this sooner.
I used this opportunity to test my new (to me) Nikkor 70-210mm f/4D. If I have researched correctly, this lens was produced between 1986-1988. I have lacked a telephoto zoom for some time and missed the versatility so when I saw this lens at a modest price and took the chance. I wasn't sure what to expect but with some post-processing it is quite a useful lens. Using mostly primes for a long time, I did notice some drop in performance compared to what I have been used to but I am satisfied with the results I have been able to get and the versatility is an acceptable compromise.
My initial plan was to pair this with mainly with my Nikon F80 film camera but it I'll continue to use it with my D600 too.
Having worked on the revised 8750 series pannier, I thought I would try and edit my model to the earlier original 5700 series loco. The main difference is in the cab; the front handrail is inside the cab access opening, requiring a redesign of the lower front of the cab. Also, there is a lovely curve to the rear of the cab access point back to the coal bunker, and the bunker itself is more simply (on the prototype) joined to the cab. More complex to model though, and I feel my interpretation leaves a few too many gaps and niggly inadequacies.
Also, the front of the cab has round 'spectacle' windows rather than largely square ones on the 8750. The next pic will illustrate this - a 1x1 trans round tile is the closest I could get, and to my eye looks fairly poor.
Congratulations to everyone who worked hard to make a commitment to getting and staying in shape during the 2018 Biggest Loser Challenge.

TheDiet Chronicles Documents an example of healthy eating or rather mindful eating. An idea of a way one "could" eat as a means to eat healthy and enjoy the process. As black belts and martial artist we are aware that Heart Disease is the number one cause of death among Americans and 1 out of 3 people will develop Type 2 Diabetes. It only makes sense then to make Healthy Eating a part of any self-defense program. Statistics show more people will be hurt by what's on their plate than they ever will be by a punch, kick, throw, or grappling match. Learning martial art techniques is important but where it stops the self-discipline of eating healthy and mindfully begins. Just an idea we explore and one that I ask my students to explore as well.

I was looking for something to do on a gorgeous Saturday when i decided to jump on the subway and head down to BrookyIn for the Spike Lee #bkmjblockparty. Its an annual event held on the exact same block where Lee filmed "Do the Right Thing." It was quite a large turnout with loud speakers blasting all the classic hits from Micheal Jackson.I as I made my way through the crowd I spotted T'eisha and immediately asked if I could take her picture. I was drawn in by her freckles, dark mysterious eyes, and the cinematic plumes of cigarette smoke wafting in front of her face.Intrigued by the idea of my project, but stifled by the noise our conversation only lasted long enough to get her approval of the photo and to tell me her name of which I'm not 100% sure I spelled correctly.I'm glad for the little info i did get and this fantastic image. www.flickr.com/groups/100strangers/

GST Voles day at Sandy Smith NR 21/03/2017 TL117388
Hi Tim
Have a great holiday in wildest Dorset. Snaps of Tuesday now at www.flickr.com/photos/pitzys_pyx/33422568442/. Not a bad day with a good turn out, a big pile of logs, great cakes from Master Baker Willis & your own donuts. The weather was briskly cool and the skies and countryside looked inviting. The Voles got an amazing amount of work done, removing Comfrey, old fencing posts, planting new fences posts, wires, netting, making gates, planting 100 trees, watering from the River, all a long way from the car park. Hopefully Malcolm will present us with one of his commentaries loosely related to many of the humourous incidents .
Cheers John P
Malcolm wrote
" The day started early. This is a waste I feel, as most of us aren't up and about until 8am, so a third of the day has been wasted. Then it ends at midnight! What time of the day do you call that? Is it still today or is it next day? In which case today is yesterday and we've missed it! Surely it would be better to have all of the day in the middle bit when we can all enjoy it? I rest my case.
So there we all were at 10am having now missed most of the day and we need something to lift our spirits. Instead Mr.T. instructed us to go down to the Upper Alders before he'd let us know what he wanted us to do. Upper Alders? Err, so why was it we have to go 'down' to them?
(Some of you who were there will have noticed I've missed out the bit where Mr.T. and I played Paint the Poo Pink. This is because I lost 5 - 3).
Anyway, there we were down in the Upper Alders feeling upbeat about getting down to the task in hand and glove. That was until we realised why Mr.T. had made us walk so far before telling us what he wanted us to do. The main body of men plus a few not so main bodies and a couple of female bodies were given spades and forks and a vast area of comfrey to dig up and clear, thereby making areas in which to plant 100 (give or take 100) small treelets (a word I've just made up but like). At this point I'd like to insert a piece from Wikipedia concerning the removal of comfrey:
'It is however difficult to remove comfrey once established as it is very deep rooting, and any fragments left in the soil will regrow. Rotovation can be successful, but may take several seasons. The best way to eradicate comfrey is to very carefully dig it out, removing as much of the root as possible. This is best done in hot, dry summer weather, wherein the dry conditions will help to kill off any remaining root stumps.'
I would just like to point out it wasn't a hot, dry summer's day and we were probably a little less than careful removing several miles of an underground root system first recorded in the doomsday book errata. However Mr.T. informed us our fears of creating more work for ourselves in the future were well founded as we will be down here again in the summer. (Book your summer holidays now folks). No, be fair, we are trying to give them a good start - the treelets not the comfrey.
The more technically minded bods had the task of building the enclosures around our budding treelets, ( there's that word again folks), to protect them from the encroaching comfrey - or was it muntjac?
The very technically mensa bods were given the job of making little gates high in the fence so that only people with very long legs could get in and out. According to Mr.T. people with very short legs are a danger to newly planted treelets. (If l use this word another 9,999,997 times this year it goes on the shortlist of new words to be added to the NED).
So we had two compounds, one for 30 treelets (9,999,996) and one for 70 treelets (9,999,995). Mr.T. required these to be planted in a random pattern! Can you have a random pattern I ask myself but in so doing ask you too? Anyway the ladies, (see Barbara and Jane I have kept your anonymity, which is very difficult as I don't know how to spell it), carefully placed 24 randomly selected sticks, randomly, in 6 randomly straight lines of randomly 4 random sticks each.
Why 24 I will here you ask yourself sometime in the future when you are reading this in your present but I will not be. Obviously so we could then spend the next few hours counting random sticks, randomly planted treelets (9,999,994) and randomly unplanted treelets (9,999,993). It was at this point that the gentlemen decided quite randomly to do away with the ladies and the random sticks and randomly plant the remaining 76 treelets (9,999,992) in the larger compound. This we managed to achieve in 10 randomly straight lines of 7 treelets (9,999,991) each perfectly randomly in line with the ones in the randomly adjacent lines. What of the other 6 treelets (9,999,990) l will here you ask..... - let's not go there again. But to satisfy your curiosity, I randomly planted them in a randomly straight line in the smaller compound in order to maintain yin and yang thus ensuring that when a butterfly flaps it's wings no one in China catches a cold from the draft.
Being as the ground was waterlogged it was decided to water all the treelets (9,999,989) to make them feel at home and drown any that were inferior. This was now easier to achieve as all our treelets (9,999,988) quite by chance were in the straightest lines we've every achieved. Now what were the odds on that?
With the day nearly over before it had begun.......(move on)..... the ladies took the tools to the river to wash along with several muddy overalls which they dipped in the river then beat on stones to remove all the dirt before hanging over brambles to dry. You would have expected the men to be grateful, but unfortunately they were still in the overalls. However the women enjoyed it.
And so we hiked up out of the Upper Alders and back to the car park for a quick rematch of Paint the Poo Pink. This time I won 1 - 0 but still lost overall as away poo only counts double if it's a draw.
Well what a day that was even though most of it wasn't as it had begun too soon and ended too late for most of us. Still the middle bit was what it was and at the end of the day what more can you say.
So many thanks to all who came and gave their all or bits of it. It was appreciated.
See you all in a fortnight's time, if not two weeks.
Me
PS Many thanks to those who came to SSNR today. I hope your boots dry out before next Tuesday. And I will not mention Mr. Clarke sliding sideways down the hill in the land rover, or trying to break the axle in badger holes, or.... oops!"
