When Black people get free, everybody gets free by Alicia Garza

#BlackLivesMatter doesn’t mean your life isn’t important–it means that Black lives, which are seen as without value within White supremacy, are important to your liberation. Given the disproportionate impact state violence has on Black lives, we understand that when Black people in this country get free, the benefits will be wide reaching and transformative for society as a whole. When we are able to end hyper-criminalization and sexualization of Black people and end the poverty, control, and surveillance of Black people, every single person in this world has a better shot at getting and staying free. When Black people get free, everybody gets free. This is why we call on Black people and our allies to take up the call that Black lives matter. We’re not saying Black lives are more important than other lives, or that other lives are not criminalized and oppressed in various ways. We remain in active solidarity with all oppressed people who are fighting for their liberation and we know that our destinies are intertwined.

And, to keep it real–it is appropriate and necessary to have strategy and action centered around Blackness without other non-Black communities of color, or White folks for that matter, needing to find a place and a way to center themselves within it. It is appropriate and necessary for us to acknowledge the critical role that Black lives and struggles for Black liberation have played in inspiring and anchoring, through practice and theory, social movements for the liberation of all people. The women’s movement, the Chicano liberation movement, queer movements, and many more have adopted the strategies, tactics and theory of the Black liberation movement. And if we are committed to a world where all lives matter, we are called to support the very movement that inspired and activated so many more. That means supporting and acknowledging Black lives.

As the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train continues southward into the Quad Cities, I wanted a shot of it that nobody else would get. And I did. It was a very tough shot, as the open Skydeck was closed, but the sky bridge was open. So, I went for broke and got this. If you look carefully, you can see the Government Bridge on the top right; an Iowa Interstate had a track warrant to come across, but alas, no over/under for me here.Still, it's a neat view of the city from up there. It is spooky to go into the main entrance by the river, as the casino is gone, there's debris everywhere, and it's dark as all get out at night with no lights off to the right.

Without a doubt, this was one of my favorite days of hiking the hills in the Walnut Creek Open Space. I was poised (well, as poised as I get) and ready for any Bullock's Oriole that showed himself, when I crested a hill and came upon this Black-tailed deer (a subspecies of Mule deer). It stared at me. I stared back. I took one shot, and we continued to stare. She wasn't afraid, and I was enthralled. The term "doe eyes" takes on a whole new meaning. There was a connection, and because of that, this has been one of my favorite images.

I admit that I've felt left out this past summer. Hoards of photographers have come back from vacations with thousands of images of moose, elk, four kinds of bears, and at least 30 of muskoxen (from Tom), while I got one coyote, a pronghorn, and a couple of bison. As happy as I was with this, THIS scene lasted five minutes, but it's with me two years later. Look at the look on that face (as my Aunt Esther would have said)! What's not to love?

Slowly the west reaches for clothes of new colours

which it passes to a row of ancient trees.

You look, and soon these two worlds both leave you,

one part climbs toward heaven, one sinks to earth,

leaving you, not really belonging to either,

not so helplessly dark as that house that is silent,

not so unswervingly given to the eternal as that thing

that turns to a star each night and climbs –

leaving you (it is impossible to untangle the threads)

your own life, timid and standing high and growing,

so that, sometimes blocked in, sometimes reaching out,

one moment your life is a stone in you, and the next, a star.

Brutal critiques invited. I'm 'not thin-skinned.

I'm looking at the Nikon D5100 (because it has a swivel screen) and the Sony Nex 5 (because it's so lightweight-- this may clench the deal for me) and has a CMOS sensor, and a movable screen. I welcome all camera advice also. Heavy just won't work for me, as I like to hike and walk my dogs and take my camera with me. But I want the best sensor I can get, and a camera that does better in low light and in-doors and takes clearer photos.

2nd Norfolk Regt. Aged 25 years. He served for a year at Gibraltar (1909-10) and then proceeded with his regiment to Belgaum, India. He left India for the Persian Gulf in November 1914.

(9th Foot) The Norfolk Regt., yst.s. of Frederic E, Hall, of Redbourn, Herts; b. 22 March 1890; educ. at Temple Grove, East Sheen; Winchester and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst: gazetted 2nd Lieut. Norfolk Regt. 18 Sept 1909, and promoted Lieut. 16 March, 1912, and Capt. Sept. 1914; served in the European War and was killed in action at Ctesiphon. Mesopotamia, 24 Nov.1915; unm.

Soldiers Died in the Great War records that Lieutenant \ Temporary Captain

Humphrey Evans Hallwas Killed in Action on the 27th November 1915 whilst serving with the 2nd Battalion, Norfolk Regiment. As with all officers, no place of birth or residence is shown.

The Medal Index Card for Captain Humphrey Evans Hall, Norfolk Regiment, is held at the National Archive under reference: WO 372/8/209698

He qualified for the 1915 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. The card is noted that he first landed in Mesopotamia in “1915” The Remarks column was originally noted that he was “Dead 27.11.15” subsequently amended to read 24.11.15. As an Officer his medals had to be applied for. This came from his father in 1922. Mr F.E. Hall Esquire gave his address as Cumberland Cottage, Redbourn, Hertfordshire.

It would also appear he was Mentioned in Despatches. This appeared in the London Gazette dated 13th July 1916.

The 1916 Probate Calendar records that Humphrey Evans Hall of Cumberland Cottage, Redbourn, Hertfordshire, a Lieutenant in the Norfolk Regiment, who died on the 24th November 1915 at Ctesiphon in Mesoptamia. Administration was granted at the London Court on the 18th August 1916 to Frederic Evans Hall, stockbroker.

The birth of a Humphrey Evans Hall was registered with the Civil Authorities in the Kensington District of London in the April to June quarter, (Q2), of 1890.

Then, as now, you had 42 days after the event to register the birth without facing prosecution and a fine. Thus the date of birth in De Ruvignys and the period of registration in the civil record are not incompatible.

1891 Census of England and Wales

The family were initially difficult to find, so I had to work back from the details on the 1901 & 1911 Censuses. Parents “Firrich” E Hall, aged 43 and a Stockbroker born Kensington. London, was head of the household at 9 Powis Square, Kensington. A married man he lived there with his wife Helen E, (aged 38, born Bloomsbury, London) and their children:-

Phillis H…..aged 11…born Kensington

The 11 year old Humphrey E. Hall, born London, was recorded as a Boarding School pupil at Temple Grove School, Sheen Lane, Mortlake, Surrey

His parents, Frederick E, (aged 53, a Stockbroker, born London, Middlesex) and Helen E., (aged 48, born London, Middlesex), were recorded living at 86 Westbourne Terrace, Paddington, London. Living with them was their daughter:-

Phillis H…….aged 21…….born London, Middlesex

The couple had a visitor. The household had 7 live in servants.

18th September 1909 – Joins the Norfolk Regiment…..

The edition of the London Gazette dated September 17th 1909 has a long list of Gentlemen Cadets from the Royal Military College who were appointed Second Lieutenant, with effect from September 18th 1909. Humphreys’ name appears against the Norfolk Regiment along with Thomas Algernon Fitzgerald Foley.

The 21 year old 2nd Lieutenant Humphrey Evans Hall, born London, was recorded in barracks at Belgaum, India with the 2nd Battalion, Norfolk Regiment. He was still unmarried.

His parents, Frederic Evans Hall, (63, a Stockbroker, born Kensington), and Helen Elizabeth Hall, (58, born Bloomsbury, Middlesex), were now recorded living at Cumberland Cottage, redbourn, Hertfordshire. The couple have been married 34 years and have had 4 children, all then still alive. Living with them is their unmarried son, Geoffrey Evans Hall, (aged 30, a Stockbrokers Clerk, born Kensington). There are also 5 live in servants.

For the following the sources are the journals of Major F.C. Lodge, commanding the 2nd Battalion, Norfolk Regiment (Royal Norfolk Regimental Museum), and Captain A.J. Shakeshaft, also of the 2nd Battalion (The National Archives).

The force which advanced on the road to Baghdad, on 19th November 1915, consisted of the 6th Division, the Cavalry Brigade, the 30th Brigade (12th Division), and forty two guns of all sorts – a total strength of under 14,000 combatants, of whom 8,500 were infantry. Of the Turkish forces, Captain Amarinder Singh writes this:

‘Townshend now estimated the enemy strength at 13,000 regular infantry and thirty-eight guns, The Turkish account puts the strength of the 15th Division comprising the 7th, 9th, and 44th Regiments, which had recently arrived, up to 18,000 troops. The Turkish account further adds that the 35th and 38th Divisions were in a better condition than they had been at Kut, although their morale was comparatively low. The 51st Division, comprising Anatolian Turks and the 45th were in good shape.’

Colonel Nur-ud-Din, aware of Townshend’s predicament, launched an attack at 14.30 hours which carried on throughout the night and the next day, and by 1930 hours on the 25th, General Townshend had ordered the withdrawal to Lajj.

The 22nd November 1915 saw the Battle of Ctesiphon involving British and Indian Army units who were attempting to advance on Bagdhad,.A British force of 11000 defeat a Turkish force of over 18000. Battle ends with a bayonet charge across open ground. Norfolks suffer 6 officers killed 27 men killed, 225 wounded and 2 missing.

However by the 24th the Brigade under the command of General Townshend suffering losses and sickness has to withdraw to Kut. The Norfolks form the rear guard as the Brigade withdraws. The 44 miles to Kut is covered in 36 hours. The 2nd Norfolks now comprise half their effective fighting force.

Abandoning the battlefield to the advancing Turks, it is perhaps not surprising that Humphreys’ final resting place is now unknown.

Who wants a stodgy old family photo, where everybody is standing stiffly with forced smiles plastered on their faces? I guess this is what you'd call a WYSIWYG photo: What You See Is What You Get, and that's the way our family photo should be because that's the way we are.

This was taken during my 80th birthday party, and the reason for the Hawaiian theme was the family's gift to Sammy and me is an all expense paid trip to Maui next spring. One of our sons owns time shares all over the world, and he has reserved accommodations for all of us - the whole gang is going‼

Footpath over the moors to Danebower and Wildboarclough going S from the Cat & Fiddle Inn at the road summit (515 m above sea level) between Buxton (Derbyshire) and Macclesfield (Cheshire).

As bleak as it gets, and not like a Sunday stroll in the park. This is the kind of scenery that surrounds the Cat & Fiddle Inn - bleak Pennine moorland typical of much of the Peak District National Park. The gloomy aspect is how it really was (heavy cloud and rain) when I took the photo - at midday!

The entire view is in Cheshire and in the Peak District National Park. The ridge ahead is about 500 m above sea level.

NOTE ON VEGETATION AND GEOLOGY

The rusty brown vegetation is cotton grass (Eriophorum vaginatum), a species of sedge. The underlying bed rocks are shales, sandstones and gritstones of Carboniferous age.

The high ground to the R is underlain Chatsworth Grit, the uppermost grit of the Millstone Grit Series (Namurian). This passes stratigraphically upward to the L into the lowest Coal Measures (Westphalian).

I was off work today and I got a ton of stuff done. If I had a day off every week, I might be able to get and stay organized. Probably not. I'd spend that day doing something fun instead.

Anyway, I did get a boatload of things accomplished today. And in my organizing, I found a book on CD in my old car that was a loaner from the library. I decided to go over there and turn myself in. The woman at the library scanned the code, but nothing was coming up, she tried again. She tried typing in the numbers. Nothing. Not recognized at all. I told her that maybe there was a warrant out because I'd had it so long. She laughed and said that perhaps they charged my library card for the book. She checked that and my card was clean. No charges and no holds. She told me that maybe I should go play lotto. And she told me not to forget who suggested that. So, when I left the library I went and bought a lotto ticket for tonight. I probably won't check it for a couple months though.

Okay in all seriousness, I've been in the middle of a photographic slump the last 2-3 days. I haven't been happy with the images I've been getting and I'm not sure if I'm burnt out or my standards are just raising again. I've been waging an internal battle trying to decide if I should just put my camera down for a few days or power through it.

Holy Trinity, Blythburgh, Suffolk

My favourite church in England.

Ten years earlier, I had written:

Perhaps some counties have a church which sums them up. If there has to be one for Suffolk, it must be the church of the Most Holy Trinity, Blythburgh. Here is the Suffolk imagination writ large, as large as it gets, and not overwritten by the Anglican triumphalism of the 19th century. Blythburgh church is often compared with its near neighbour, St Edmund at Southwold, but this isn't a fair comparison - Southwold church is much grander, and full of urban confidence. Probably a better comparison is with St Margaret, Lowestoft, for there, too, the Reformation intervened before the tower could be rebuilt. The two churches have a lot in common, but Blythburgh has the saving grace. It is so fascinating, so stunningly beautiful, by virtue of a factor that is rare in Anglican parish churches: sheer neglect.

Holy Trinity, Blythburgh, is the church that Suffolk people know and love best, and because of this it has generated some wonderful legends. The first is that Blythburgh, now a tiny village bisected by the fearsome A12 between London and the east coast ports, was once a thriving medieval town. This idea is used to explain the size of the church; in reality, it is almost certainly not the case. Blythburgh has always been small. But it did have an important medieval priory, and thus its church attracted enough wealthy piety on the eve of the Reformation to bankroll a spectacular rebuilding.

It is to Lavenham, Long Melford, Mildenhall, Southwold and here that we come to see the late 15th century Suffolk aesthetic in perfection. But for my money, Holy Trinity, Blythburgh, is the most significant medieval art object in the county, ranking alongside Salle in Norfolk. Look up at the clerestory; it seems impossible, there is so much glass, so little stone; and yet it rides the building with an air of permanence. Beneath, there is a coyness about the aisles that I prefer to the mathematics of Lavenham. Here, it could not have been done otherwise; it distils human architectural experience. If St Peter and St Paul at Lavenham is man talking to God, Holy Trinity at Blythburgh is God talking to man.

At the east end, a curious series of initials in Lombardic script stretch across the outer chancel wall. You can see an image of this in the left hand column. It reads A-N-JS-B-S-T-M-S-A-H-K-R. This probably stands for Ad Nomina JesuS, Beati Sanctae Trinitas, Maria Sanctorem Anne Honorem Katherine Reconstructus ('In the name of the blessed Jesus, the Holy Trinity, and in honour of holy Mary, Anne and Katherine, this was rebuilt'). A fanciful theory is that they are the initials of the wives of the donors. However, note the symbol of the Trinity in the T stone, and I think this is a clue to the whole piece.

High above, an old man sits on the gable end. Incredibly, this is a medieval image of God the Father, and extraordinary survival; we'll come back to this in a moment.

The porch is part of the late 15th century rebuilding, but it was considerably restored in the early 20th century. Interestingly, the angels crowning the battlements look medieval - but they weren't there in 1900, so must have come from somewhere else. Pretty much all the porch's features of interest date from this time. These include the small medieval font pressed into service as a holy water stoup, and image niche above the doors. This has been filled in more recent years by an image if the Holy Trinity; God the Father holds the Son suspended while a dove representing the Holy Spirit alights; you can see medieval versions of this at Framlingham and Little Glemham.

Of all medieval imagery, this was the most frowned upon by puritans. An image of God the Father was thought the most suspicious of all idolatry. As late as the 1870s, when the Reverend White edited the first popular edition of the Diary of William Dowsing, he actually congratulated Dowsing on destroying images of the Holy Trinity in the course of his 1644 progress through the counties of Suffolk and Cambridgeshire.

William Dowsing visited on the morning on April 9th, 1644. It was a Tuesday, and he had spent most of the week in the area. The previous day he'd been at Southwold and Walberswick to the east, but preceded his visit here with one to Blyford, which lies to the west, so he was probably staying overnight at the family home in Laxfield. He found twenty images in stained glass to take to task (a surprisingly small number, given the size of the place) and two hundred more that were inaccessible that morning (probably in the great east window). Three brass inscriptions incurred his wrath (but again, this is curious; there were many more) and he also ordered down the cross on the porch and the cross on the tower. Most significantly of all, he decided the angels in the roof should go.

Lots of Suffolk churches have angels in their roofs. None are like Blythburgh's. You step inside, and there they are, exactly as you've seen them in books and in photographs. They are awesome, breathtaking. There are twelve of them. Perhaps there were once twenty. How would you get them down if ordered to do so? The roof is so high, and the stencilling of IHS symbols would also have to go.

Perhaps this was already indistinct by the time Dowsing visited. Perhaps Tuesday, 9th of April 1644 was a dull day.

Several of the angels are peppered with lead shot. Here is another of those Suffolk legends; that Dowsing and the churchwardens fired muskets at the angels to try and bring them down. But when the angels were restored in the 1970s, the lead shot removed was found to be 18th century; contemporary with them there is a note in the churchwardens accounts that men were paid for shooting jackdaws living inside the building, so that is probably where the shot arises from.

Similarly, the splendid church guide repeats the error that the Holy Trinity symbol in the porch filled a gap that had been 'empty since 1644'. But there was certainly no image in it when Dowsing arrived here, or anywhere else in Suffolk; statues were completely outlawed by injunctions in the early years of the reign of Edward VI, almost a hundred years before the morning of Dowsing's visit.

Another feature used as evidence of puritan destruction is the ring fixed into the most westerly pillar of the north arcade. Cromwell's men stabled their horses here, apparently. Well, it almost certainly is a ring for tying horses to, and the broken bricks at the cleared west end also suggest this; but there is no reason to think that Cromwell and the puritans were responsible. For a full century before Cromwell, and for nearly two hundred years afterwards, a church as big as this would have had a multitude of uses.

Holy Trinity was built for the rituals of the Catholic church; once these were no longer allowed, a village like Blythburgh, which can never have had more than 500 people, would have seen it as an asset in other ways. It was only with the 19th century sacramental revival brought about by the Oxford Movement that we started getting all holy again about our parish churches. Perhaps it was used as an overnight stables for passing travellers on the main road; not an un-Christian use for it to be put to, I think.

In August 1577, a great storm brought down the steeple, which fell into the church and damaged the font. This was at the height of Elizabethan superstition, and the devil was blamed; his hoof marks can still be seen on the church door. Supposedly, a black dog ran through the church, killing two parishioners; he was seen the same day at St Mary, Bungay. Black Shuck is the East Anglian devil dog, the feared hound of the marshes; and Holy Trinity is the self-styled Cathedral of the Marshes, so it is appropriate that he appeared here.

You can see where the font has been broken. You can also see that this was one of the rare, beautiful seven sacrament fonts, similar in style to the one at Westhall; but, like those at neighbouring Wenhaston and Southwold, it has been completely stripped of imagery. Almost certainly, this was in the 1540s, but there is a story that the font at Wenhaston was chiselled clean as part of the 19th century restoration.

More importantly in any case, the storm, or the dog, or the devil, damaged the roof; it would not be properly repaired for more than 400 years. Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, accounts note that Holy Trinity is not impregnable to the weather. By the 19th century, parishioners attended divine service with umbrellas. By the 1880s, it was a positively dangerous building to be in, and the Bishop of Norwich ordered it closed.

Why had Holy Trinity not been restored? Simply, this is a big church, with a tiny village. There was no rich patron, and in any case the parishioners had a passion for Methodism. Probably, repairs had been mooted, but not a wholesale restoration as we have seen at Lavenham, Long Melford and Southwold. By the 1880s, attention in England had turned to the preservation of medieval detail; in short, restorations were not as ignorant as they had been a quarter of a century earlier. Suggestions that Holy Trinity should be restored in the manner of the other three were blocked by the Society for the Preservation of Ancient Buildings, and this owed a lot to the energy of William Morris, the Society's secretary.

The slow, patient restoration of this building took the best part of a century; indeed, when I first visited in the 1980s I was still aware of a sense of decay.

Nothing could be further from the truth today. You step into a wide, white, open space, one of England's great church interiors. There, high above you, is the glorious roof and the angels of God. The brick floors spread around the scraped font, which still bears its dedicatory inscription and standing places for participants. You turn into the central gangway, and more than twenty empty indents for brasses stretch before you. Dowsing can be blamed for the destruction of hardly any of them. In reality, you see the work of 18th and 19th century thieves and collectors.

The bench-ends are superb. The benches themselves were reconstructed in the late 19th century, supposedly from the main post of Westleton windmill, but the ends are some of the county's finest medieval images. There are basically three series: the seven deadly sins, the seven works of mercy, and the four seasons. There are also angels bearing symbols of the Holy Trinity and the crown. Examples of all of these can be seen below; hover on them to read a description, click on them to see them enlarged.

The rood screen is a disappointment; most of it is modern, and the medieval bits perfunctory and scoured. Having said this, note how tiny the exit from the north aisle rood loft stair is. Also at this end of the church, notice a bare scattering of medieval glass, including some Saints.

But step through the central aisle to see something remarkable. The choir stalls are fronted by exquisite carvings of the 12 apostles, evangelists, and even figures who may be King Anna and his daughter St Etheldreda. She founded the priory that became Ely Cathedral, and there is a local connection because her father was killed at the Battle of Blythburgh. It seems likely that there was a shrine to them here.

Seeing these sixteen carvings is a bit like gobbling up a very large box of chocolates, but it is worth stopping to consider quite how genuine they all are. For a start, there could not have been choir stalls here in medieval times, and in any case we know that these desks and their frontages were in the north aisle chapel until the 19th century. They were used as school benches in the 17th century; they still bear holes for inkpots, and the graffiti of a bored Dutch child (his father was probably working on draining the marshes) is dated 1665 - you can see it in the left-hand column. There is nothing at all like them anywhere else in Suffolk, and although we know that they predate the restoration of Holy Trinity (and therefore almost certainly come from here originally) they seem of too high a quality to come from such a rural outback. In short, they are not medieval, whatever the guidebooks say.

Whatever, the east end of the chancel and aisles are thrillingly modern, wholly devotional. In the north aisle, traditionally the Hopton chantry, extraordinary friezes of skeletons become symbols of the four evangelists behind the altar. Beside them, with a view into the sanctuary, is one of Suffolk's biggest Easter sepulchres, tomb of the Hoptons. In the surviving sedilia of the high altar, we find Peter Ball's beautiful Madonna and Child and a fine Holy Trinity plate, which distract perhaps only slightly from the Jewish imagery above the reredos. It is all just about perfect.

Tucked to one side of the organ is a clockjack; Suffolk has two, and the other is down-river at Southwold. They date from the late 17th century, and presumably once struck the hours; at high church Blythburgh and Southwold today, they are used to announce the entry of the ministers.

You may be reading this entry in a far-off land; or perhaps you are here at home. Whatever, if you have not visited this church, then I urge you to do so. It is the most beautiful church in Suffolk, a wonderful art object, and it is always open in daylight. It remains one of the most significant medieval buildings in England. If you only visit one of Suffolk's churches, then make it this one.

This morning was the inaugural "shakedown" ride following the recent rebuild of my 1971 Raleigh International. This bike has been a wonderful reimagining of a club racer - a venerable British lightweight drop bar frame with a three speed internally geared hub. I've loved that configuration, but in honest self reflection I find that nearly all of my riding is done on my Boulder Brevet. Why is that? Fit, gearing, build, ride quality.

Hence, a return to the roots of this bike, with more than a few nods towards those things that make my life feel better on two wheels.

So, the inaugural shakedown ride, a short twelve mile route of hills and flats that I use to test new builds. My initial assessment? A/A+...and now I'm REALLY jazzed about getting and installing 700 x 38 tires that I can run at lower pressure.

To say that I'm pleased with this rebuild would be a gross understatement. The bottom bracket is perfectly tuned and the Stronglight 48/40/28 triple yields a very nice range of low and middle range gears when paired up with the 13-30 Ultra 6 freewheel. A Mountech FD handles the jump between 40 and 28 without blinking an eye. And the Mark Pace-built rear wheel seems to have been an outstanding decision. It's riding very nicely.

While I wait on tires to arrive I'll head for the shop to engineer a nicer looking light bracket and to camouflage/protect the exposed wiring from the dynohub. That's (mostly) cosmetic, but I appreciate a well designed system.

The story of this photo:

This is a shot of a sunrise over the main lake at the Sukhothai Historical Park in Thailand. I was a bit creative with the colors here. It was quite a misty morning. So there was indeed a glow in the sky. I chose to enhance it a bit in post processing.

The Sukhothai Historical Park covers the ruins of Sukhothai, capital of the Sukhothai kingdom in the 13th and 14th centuries, in what is now the north of Thailand. It is located near the modern city of Sukhothai, capital of the province with the same name. Inside this facility there are the remains of the royal palace and twenty-six temples. UNESCO has declared the Sukhothai Historical Park a World Heritage Site

I was very impressed with the bottles for this wódka.

All corks are sourced from Portugal and are soaked in Belvedere to make sure they do not influence colour, taste or smell of finished product.

As the iconic bottles are filled they are individually hand finished and inspected. The final step is the hand application of the blue strip stamp.

Many years ago when I was in my twenties, a good friend of mine of Russian descent, was getting married.

He invited me to his wedding, and following the service, we all went to his family house, where the refreshments were served.

I do not have a taste for "hard" liquor, but I got the feeling that to refuse the offering, was somewhat of an insult to the parents.

So I took the offered small glass which was then almost filled with vodka. I thought I will just sip this for a while and hopefully the moment will pass on.

We (all men) stood in a circle, and the Russians amongst us said something the Aussies didn't get, and then the drinks were suddnely up-ended and in one fell swoop - gulp. GONE.

There was nothing for it but to do the same. I was surprised that it wasn't as bad as I had expected, as it barely touched the sides, and left a warm glowing throat sensation.

The glasses were immediately refilled, but after another couple of these, I was able to slip away without insulting the parents, much to the amusement of my friend.

I look back with humour on the moment, and just stick to an occasional cold beer.

The design on the bottle features the Belweder Palace, but as I was more interested in the tree design, I have increased the black levels, which has made the palace almost invisible, but made the trees.

We tend to celebrate light in our pictures. Understanding how light interacts with the camera is paramount to the work we do. The temperature, intensity and source of light can wield different photography effect on the same subject or scene; add ISO, aperture and speed, the camera, the lens type, focal length and filters…the combination is varied ad multi-layered and if you know how to use them all, you will come to appreciate that all lights are useful, even those surrounded by a lot of darkness.

We are guided by three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, our longing to capture in print, that which is beautiful, the constant search for the one picture, and constant barrage of new equipment and style of photography. These passions, like great winds, have blown us across the globe in search of the one and we do understand the one we do look for might be this picture right here for someone else out there.

“Lonely 22 year-old Russian beauty seeking Western lover”. Ah, how many times we have all answered those emails only, ultimately, to be disappointed. However, in this case, what you see is what you get and no strings attached.

Based, as everyone knows, on the mighty Fiat 124, the Lada Riva stood at the very pinnacle of Russian automotive excellence. In production in one form or another for over 40 years no-one is sure how many were made (state secret), but it’s believed the figure exceeds 40.000.000.

It’s not hard to see their appeal: rugged, good-looking in a square box sort of way, roomy – especially in the Estate format, like this one – and easy to fix……..(go on, say it). Sadly the lazy, decadent West didn’t take them to heart, although they did sell well in Canada and New Zealand, oddly enough.

This 1996 Lada is an odd mixture: 1960s styling, 1970s interior, 1990s production – you can’t get all that even in a Morgan (and you would have to pay a lot more), and this is a much more practical consideration. Where else can you find a low-mileage, relatively modern, rear-wheel drive Estate with little in the way of electronics? It gets more appealing by the minute.

P406 KTR is as close as you are likely to get to finding a new Riva – the DVLA tells us that it has not yet had it first MOT! Those 4.200 miles on the clock could be genuine. The basic condition of the car would suggest this too, but some attention will be needed to get it back into showroom condition. And it’s a very brave man who would drive a car that has been off the road for so long without giving it a jolly good servicing (Russian beauties like that sort of thing).

This shot was on my list of shots to get and am I glad I got it! Although it was a bit crummy the few days we were down there, the clouds worked in parallel to produce some pretty awesome photos!

Prompted by the upcoming release of IQ84 by Haruki Murakami, and the possibility of him winning the nobel prize for literature, I decided to talk a little bit about my favorite author (and other authors).

Here is a grainy impression of what my "real books" shelf has on it. This is the zone of the book shelf that I read from most often (if I'm not getting and/or reading something new, that is). This shelf is out in the living room which has crappity light for photos at night time, so I will try and replace this with a larger and more well lit photo tomorrow.

What you see here are basically some of my favorite books of all time, some of them have been for up to 15 years… for example "Lizard" and "Kitchen" have been favorites since my mid-teens, whereas "The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle" has been a favorite for about 12 years now (the Japanese version, as well… though I have to admit to only having read the missing chapters… there are chapters missing in the English adaptation, which is what prompted me to originally get the Japanese set back about 11 years ago).

There are also differences between the soft and hardcover versions of the Japanese, though I'll also admit I'm not skilled enough yet to be able to just SIT and ENJOY the books in Japanese yet (as one would with a book in their native language)… they are still mostly study aides, taken a few pages at a time when the mood strikes.

I have more books than this, obviously, but a lot of them are "guilty pleasure" books… no, not romance novels, I just mean books I read once but that didn't leave a very lasting impression on me. Also, all of my manga and most of my study books are in my office, and I have already done some talking about them on flickr a few times before. :) These here are gathered together because they are the most important to me, personally. I've read most of them more than once, and about half of them closer to 5 times. Wind-Up Bird I've read probably upwards of 7 full times over the last 12 years.

Starting with the books on top there, on the left first...

- "What I Talk About When I Talk About Running" - Haruki Murakami

this is the only book in the picture that I haven't read yet. I started it but it is not like his usual, and I'm finding it a little hard to get rolling and interested. I kind of wish that "Underground" was in this picture instead (but it's currently next to my bed). "Underground" I first finished reading while on my honeymoon in Japan… which is quite possibly the best place to read it, as I was able to strongly visualize EXACTLY where many of the events (real events of the Sarin Gas Attack) took place on the Tokyo subway lines.

- "Idoru" - William Gibson

I actually wish "Robot Visions" by Isaac Asimov was here instead… but "Idoru" still an interesting book. It might bother people who really know their Japanese pop culture in depth, but as a quick bite to eat, I rather enjoy it from time to time.

"The Stranger" - Albert Camus… in Japanese, paperback.

I also have this book twice in English (one of which I bought for my husband before we lived together). I've also bought this book (in English) for several other people in my life as the years have gone by. It is the one book that I recommend to people that I am willing to put forward the money to assure they get a copy, lol.

Apart from Wind-Up Bird... I would highly recommend "The Elephant Vanishes" to those who want to get a quick taste of Murakami's style before delving into one of his novels. Wind-Up bird is upward of 600 pages long, which is daunting for some folks... so if that bothers you, start with this book first, and see how it goes. :)

- The Fountainhead - Ayn Rand

This was my first introduction to the work of Ayn Rand. The person who told me to read this book intended for me to see how "evil" and "bad" she was. I am always a skeptic, so went into reading it without thinking about what the person had told me about her. After this, and some additional research about her, I ended up discovering someone (her) who understood and could verbalize things I always felt but was not articulate enough myself to put into words. Oh... and by the way, she is not bad nor evil... she is exactly the opposite.

- "The God Delusion" - Richard Dawkins

I have several books by him, one of them I have misplaced, and the other two are by my bedside waiting to be re-read in one case, and read for the first time in another case. I highly recommend this book, also, to almost everyone.

Finally, one that is slightly cut off here…

"Cats Are Not Peas - a Calico History of Genetics" - Laura Gould

This book is one of the things that first got me deeply interested in genetics, and which I would also recommend to anyone who is interested in discovering basic genetics and / or loves cats, hehehe.

There are also several books that I wish could also be in this photo. Two of those, for example, being "The Dragons of Eden" and "Cosmos" by Carl Sagan... I highly, highly recommend both... again, to everyone.

The first photos from a very special, hard to get and almost unknown camera:

Olympus Auto electro-set (1958 - 1959)

was the appearance year of the Olympus Auto electro-set

Olympus wrote in the manual:

This camera is the result of the gained experience.

That means, this camera is very special.

To me this is the very beginning of the Olympus 35 coupled exposure meter rangefinder cameras, but with many special details that no other Olympus rangefinder camera ever had again. Its incredible that this camera is so unknown even by Olympus fans.

In 1958 the Olympus Auto was then the only camera in the world with coupled exposure meter that when the shutter speed dial was rotated, the aperture was also changed to maintain the same light value, but when the aperture dial was rotated, only the aperture setting was changed.

At that time Olympus made history many times, and this one was the only with this kind of versatility.

Based on the ACE body an amazing camera was developed by engineers with no limits.

Again supplied with a fixed lens (E. Zuiko 1:1,8 f = 4,2 cm) the camera had got a coupled Selenium light meter with a hinged cover over the meter cell.

A buster-cell* could be connected for better measurements. The plug was on the front right under the meter cell.

The round ASA scale window was on the back, the ASA setting was done by pressing a lever and rotating the aperture ring.

For exact exposure, the shutter speed must preset and the aperture ring, according to the meter reading, turned.

Multi exposure* was possible by pushing a small lever at the back.

If the camera was loaded, the film transport could be watched in a small window* next to the viewfinder.

Rewind knob and camera back safety was placed at the base plate and luxuriously constructed.

The large viewfinder window with bright frame, combined with the coupled rangefinder with parallax compensation* for the best possible picture sharpness. A lever at the distance ring made focusing easier.

There was a special connection for fixing the carrying belt.

* The only Olympus rangefinder camera that had these features, and it was from 1958! Not even the 35 SP have them and the build quality of this camera.

This is the nearest I can get and shows a green band, Its a fresh print scan with Final rework on 15May2025 and a rework from 14May2025 which is way out of line. Colour print is heavily tinted red..

This bus was subsequently exported to the Rarotonga in the Cook Islands with the CI rego being MN4041 operating with Union Citco Travel. Cooks Island Bus owned it for a couple of years but it only sat in depot. In 2007 it was at Matavera derelict

...and this time all the colour is in the sunshine in my own garden in Kent after all that snow and wind and rain and greyness. Pity we can't say the same for those alleged green shoots of economic recovery that the business minister was going on about 2 weeks back: Lloyds Banking Group can hardly be seeing those on the day that it announces that the HBOS bank that the Treasury encouraged it to swallow and rescue has announced a £10.8 billion loss for the PRE-recession year - and that came not just from dodgy mortgages but even more from its corporate lending (plus a bit of foolish gambling and some of the own-account equity investment of the kind that banking used not to be about, explicitly). The sun won't last in the garden (this is England) but the rural Spring looks more enduring that any mythical economic one this year. Just hope I can keep up my mortgage payments long enough to see through the many seasons till the economic thaw happens.....!?! A couple of other little fact for today: the US economy shrank by 6.2% in the last quarter, UK house prices went down 15% in a year (good but only for the 12 people still left able to get and service anew mortgage.... and Ryanair's ever-so-cuddly boss announces that they are considering charging us £1 to use the loo on their planes - to maximize cash-flow (not ours though!.

In other words, IT'S GOOD NEWS WEEK. No doubt someone's also dropped a bomb somewhere, not to mention contaminating atmosphere and blackening skies.... :)

Le problème souvent avec les diorama est « d'essayer » de reproduire les couleurs au plus juste.

Le plus juste avec tous les pièges d'une reproduction sur un écran. Même en impression :voir les surprenants noirs opaques dans l'excellent livre « Diableries » que l'on ne présente plus ;May,Pellerin & Fleming.( ce qui a l'avantage de rehausser l'ensemble des couleurs )

Sur cette série de cartes j'ai eu beaucoup de mal a ternir justement toutes ces couleurs pour avoir un « petit aperçu » visuel de mes cartes en 2021.

Autant la gélatine albumine ne c'est pas fanée avec le temps mais les couleurs sont blanchies aucunes n'est vives et acides comme sur d'autre diorama.Les perçages rehausse quand même l'ensemble de la composition avec la lumière blanche...Mais au stéréoscope !

Donc la vue avec les perçages à l’extrême droite, a été obtenu au détriment de la colorimétrie !!!

The problem often with diorama is "trying" to reproduce the colors as accurately as possible.

The fairest with all the pitfalls of a reproduction on a screen. Even in printing: see the surprising opaque blacks in the excellent book "Diableries" which we no longer present; May, Pellerin & Fleming (which has the advantage of enhancing all the colors)

On this series of cards I had a lot of trouble tarnishing all of these colors to get a visual “glimpse” of my cards in 2021.

As much as the albumin gelatin does not fade over time but the colors are bleached, none are vivid and acidic like on other diorama. The piercings still enhance the whole composition with white light ... But with the stereoscope!

So the view with the holes on the far right, was obtained at the expense of colorimetry !!!

I think that for the dioramas we better understand the extraordinary work of all these anonymous hands, without superimposing the colored back and the photographic view as I did until today.

Shot on a very fine paper, with time it curls a little, and the albumen emulsion layer is very often veiled or almost absent in some places.

I suppose a thicker layer of emulsion would have caused other problems and would have passed through this tissue paper. Some shades pass emulsion side ...

The colors have held up relatively well over time, depending on the organic dyes used!

Some water-based some not. The paradox is that the closer we get and above all goes beyond 1870, the quality of the products used (paper / ink) and the lack of precision of the painters that we press have become a real industry, probably felt on the final diorama!

I find it hard to understand how if these real artists took; stencil I do not believe it too much, rather a cut paper shape that we position and where it has little to paint over ... I know it's called stencil! Never seen a trace, a burr that goes in this direction.

I prefer my version, the "Chinese" method: each same color on a set of production in order, before moving on to another ... These are window displays, the order of the colors reversed!

What about the white wax highlighting ??

For the holes and other slots, there are some, it is on which passed in press. Impossible without a calibrated tool to make certain curves and others.

But the offset of some openings / holes leads me to think that they had to work on several layers at the same time of the same series. (Four or five)

This is not possible with certain diorama where the drilling and coloring are a single operation.

Can we see the markings on some, to position this sandwich before manual drilling?

It's a whole, which makes these dioramas so interesting that you are sure the neighbor does not have the same!

(Nah, don't mess with that!)

It would be very interesting to compare several of the same manufacture ....

Hana on the refrigerator this afternoon, trying to get (and succeeding) my attention. These pictures were also an experiment to see how close I could get before losing focus (or having the focal plane in the wrong spot). Unlike Archie, Hana usually stays (relatively) still when I take close-up pictures of her.

Photo from 2015 auto show -- car and price may be outdated. I skipped this year's show (March 11-13); it was crowded last year, I didn't take many photos, and I'm not in the market for a car. The Lamborghini display drew many lookers, surely a disproportionately large percentage of attendees relative to those who might afford such cars. (Probably as close as most of us are likely to get, and even then barricades kept people from actually getting to the cars.) It's often said that all things are relative, and that's the basis on which I've attached the "inexpensive" label to this car's starting price of nearly a quarter-million dollars; another Lamborghini on display was priced considerably higher (next photo).
