The Northern Carmine Bee-eater was a bird I'd missed on all my African trips (all right, it wasn't split when I first missed it and on some it was Southern I didn't get) and was about the top of my wanted list so this was a joyful occasion for me! I got flight shots as it moved from one bush to another. We quickly determined that it wasn't flighty, just hunting between a few preferred perches, and then we were able to cautiously advance on it.

I saw two of these adorable mammals deep inside the park. I remained in place so I snuck up as close as I could. Unfortunately there was plant growth between us and this was the best I could get and then it walked off. Darn!!. The first photo for the park as far as I know

This is basically the photo I was trying to get, and the rest are "extras." Trying to keep a long story short I'll tell ya that for over a year I've been intending to make a youtube video overview of my gun collection for a friend in Pennsylvania. Fiiiinally i got around to doing it, thanks to Spring Cleaning giving me a spotless pristine kitchen floor :)

My understanding is that a ‘Brass Monkey’ should contain 30 Cannon Balls … the one in my photograph contains a lot more than thirty.
When I was young I was sent home from school because I used the expression “Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey” when complaining on behalf of the class that the classroom was cold.
My father was really annoyed with the school insisting that a brass monkey was something used to store cannon balls and that he could not understand why I had been suspended from class.
After my visit to Elizabeth Fort in Cork I decided to investigate further and came across two different stories that do not agree.
[FIRST EXPLANATION] According to the United States Navy Historical Center, this is a legend of the sea without historical justification. The center has researched this because of the questions it gets and says the term “brass monkey” and a vulgar reference to the effect of cold on the monkey’s extremities, appears to have originated in the book “Before the Mast” by C.A. Abbey. It was said that it was so cold that it would “freeze the tail off a brass monkey.” The Navy says there is no evidence that the phrase had anything to do with ships or ships with cannon balls.
[SECOND EXPLANATION]Every sailing ship had to have cannon for protection. Cannon of the times required round iron cannonballs. The master wanted to store the cannonballs such that they could be of instant use when needed, yet not roll around the gun deck. The solution was to stack them up in a square-based pyramid next to the cannon. The top level of the stack had one ball, the next level down had four, the next had nine, the next had sixteen, and so on. Four levels would provide a stack of 30 cannonballs. The only real problem was how to keep the bottom level from sliding out from under the weight of the higher levels. To do this, they devised a small brass plate ("brass monkey") with one rounded indentation for each cannonball in the bottom layer. Brass was used because the cannonballs wouldn't rust to the "brass monkey", but would rust to an iron one.
When temperature falls, brass contracts in size faster than iron. As it got cold on the gun decks, the indentations in the brass monkey would get smaller than the iron cannonballs they were holding. If the temperature got cold enough, the bottom layer would pop out of the indentations spilling the entire pyramid over the deck. Thus it was, quite literally, cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey.
A Decatur Jct train with with a combination of 4 GP16's and 20's sits on the main a bit out of town. This train was in almost pitch black therefore lighting had to be improvised. This was not an easy shot to get and I think it came out amazing.

Holy Trinity, Blythburgh, Suffolk
My favourite church in England.
Ten years earlier, I had written:
Perhaps some counties have a church which sums them up. If there has to be one for Suffolk, it must be the church of the Most Holy Trinity, Blythburgh. Here is the Suffolk imagination writ large, as large as it gets, and not overwritten by the Anglican triumphalism of the 19th century. Blythburgh church is often compared with its near neighbour, St Edmund at Southwold, but this isn't a fair comparison - Southwold church is much grander, and full of urban confidence. Probably a better comparison is with St Margaret, Lowestoft, for there, too, the Reformation intervened before the tower could be rebuilt. The two churches have a lot in common, but Blythburgh has the saving grace. It is so fascinating, so stunningly beautiful, by virtue of a factor that is rare in Anglican parish churches: sheer neglect.
Holy Trinity, Blythburgh, is the church that Suffolk people know and love best, and because of this it has generated some wonderful legends. The first is that Blythburgh, now a tiny village bisected by the fearsome A12 between London and the east coast ports, was once a thriving medieval town. This idea is used to explain the size of the church; in reality, it is almost certainly not the case. Blythburgh has always been small. But it did have an important medieval priory, and thus its church attracted enough wealthy piety on the eve of the Reformation to bankroll a spectacular rebuilding.
It is to Lavenham, Long Melford, Mildenhall, Southwold and here that we come to see the late 15th century Suffolk aesthetic in perfection. But for my money, Holy Trinity, Blythburgh, is the most significant medieval art object in the county, ranking alongside Salle in Norfolk. Look up at the clerestory; it seems impossible, there is so much glass, so little stone; and yet it rides the building with an air of permanence. Beneath, there is a coyness about the aisles that I prefer to the mathematics of Lavenham. Here, it could not have been done otherwise; it distils human architectural experience. If St Peter and St Paul at Lavenham is man talking to God, Holy Trinity at Blythburgh is God talking to man.
At the east end, a curious series of initials in Lombardic script stretch across the outer chancel wall. You can see an image of this in the left hand column. It reads A-N-JS-B-S-T-M-S-A-H-K-R. This probably stands for Ad Nomina JesuS, Beati Sanctae Trinitas, Maria Sanctorem Anne Honorem Katherine Reconstructus ('In the name of the blessed Jesus, the Holy Trinity, and in honour of holy Mary, Anne and Katherine, this was rebuilt'). A fanciful theory is that they are the initials of the wives of the donors. However, note the symbol of the Trinity in the T stone, and I think this is a clue to the whole piece.
High above, an old man sits on the gable end. Incredibly, this is a medieval image of God the Father, and extraordinary survival; we'll come back to this in a moment.
The porch is part of the late 15th century rebuilding, but it was considerably restored in the early 20th century. Interestingly, the angels crowning the battlements look medieval - but they weren't there in 1900, so must have come from somewhere else. Pretty much all the porch's features of interest date from this time. These include the small medieval font pressed into service as a holy water stoup, and image niche above the doors. This has been filled in more recent years by an image if the Holy Trinity; God the Father holds the Son suspended while a dove representing the Holy Spirit alights; you can see medieval versions of this at Framlingham and Little Glemham.
Of all medieval imagery, this was the most frowned upon by puritans. An image of God the Father was thought the most suspicious of all idolatry. As late as the 1870s, when the Reverend White edited the first popular edition of the Diary of William Dowsing, he actually congratulated Dowsing on destroying images of the Holy Trinity in the course of his 1644 progress through the counties of Suffolk and Cambridgeshire.
William Dowsing visited on the morning on April 9th, 1644. It was a Tuesday, and he had spent most of the week in the area. The previous day he'd been at Southwold and Walberswick to the east, but preceded his visit here with one to Blyford, which lies to the west, so he was probably staying overnight at the family home in Laxfield. He found twenty images in stained glass to take to task (a surprisingly small number, given the size of the place) and two hundred more that were inaccessible that morning (probably in the great east window). Three brass inscriptions incurred his wrath (but again, this is curious; there were many more) and he also ordered down the cross on the porch and the cross on the tower. Most significantly of all, he decided the angels in the roof should go.
Lots of Suffolk churches have angels in their roofs. None are like Blythburgh's. You step inside, and there they are, exactly as you've seen them in books and in photographs. They are awesome, breathtaking. There are twelve of them. Perhaps there were once twenty. How would you get them down if ordered to do so? The roof is so high, and the stencilling of IHS symbols would also have to go.
Perhaps this was already indistinct by the time Dowsing visited. Perhaps Tuesday, 9th of April 1644 was a dull day.
Several of the angels are peppered with lead shot. Here is another of those Suffolk legends; that Dowsing and the churchwardens fired muskets at the angels to try and bring them down. But when the angels were restored in the 1970s, the lead shot removed was found to be 18th century; contemporary with them there is a note in the churchwardens accounts that men were paid for shooting jackdaws living inside the building, so that is probably where the shot arises from.
Similarly, the splendid church guide repeats the error that the Holy Trinity symbol in the porch filled a gap that had been 'empty since 1644'. But there was certainly no image in it when Dowsing arrived here, or anywhere else in Suffolk; statues were completely outlawed by injunctions in the early years of the reign of Edward VI, almost a hundred years before the morning of Dowsing's visit.
Another feature used as evidence of puritan destruction is the ring fixed into the most westerly pillar of the north arcade. Cromwell's men stabled their horses here, apparently. Well, it almost certainly is a ring for tying horses to, and the broken bricks at the cleared west end also suggest this; but there is no reason to think that Cromwell and the puritans were responsible. For a full century before Cromwell, and for nearly two hundred years afterwards, a church as big as this would have had a multitude of uses.
Holy Trinity was built for the rituals of the Catholic church; once these were no longer allowed, a village like Blythburgh, which can never have had more than 500 people, would have seen it as an asset in other ways. It was only with the 19th century sacramental revival brought about by the Oxford Movement that we started getting all holy again about our parish churches. Perhaps it was used as an overnight stables for passing travellers on the main road; not an un-Christian use for it to be put to, I think.
In August 1577, a great storm brought down the steeple, which fell into the church and damaged the font. This was at the height of Elizabethan superstition, and the devil was blamed; his hoof marks can still be seen on the church door. Supposedly, a black dog ran through the church, killing two parishioners; he was seen the same day at St Mary, Bungay. Black Shuck is the East Anglian devil dog, the feared hound of the marshes; and Holy Trinity is the self-styled Cathedral of the Marshes, so it is appropriate that he appeared here.
You can see where the font has been broken. You can also see that this was one of the rare, beautiful seven sacrament fonts, similar in style to the one at Westhall; but, like those at neighbouring Wenhaston and Southwold, it has been completely stripped of imagery. Almost certainly, this was in the 1540s, but there is a story that the font at Wenhaston was chiselled clean as part of the 19th century restoration.
More importantly in any case, the storm, or the dog, or the devil, damaged the roof; it would not be properly repaired for more than 400 years. Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, accounts note that Holy Trinity is not impregnable to the weather. By the 19th century, parishioners attended divine service with umbrellas. By the 1880s, it was a positively dangerous building to be in, and the Bishop of Norwich ordered it closed.
Why had Holy Trinity not been restored? Simply, this is a big church, with a tiny village. There was no rich patron, and in any case the parishioners had a passion for Methodism. Probably, repairs had been mooted, but not a wholesale restoration as we have seen at Lavenham, Long Melford and Southwold. By the 1880s, attention in England had turned to the preservation of medieval detail; in short, restorations were not as ignorant as they had been a quarter of a century earlier. Suggestions that Holy Trinity should be restored in the manner of the other three were blocked by the Society for the Preservation of Ancient Buildings, and this owed a lot to the energy of William Morris, the Society's secretary.
The slow, patient restoration of this building took the best part of a century; indeed, when I first visited in the 1980s I was still aware of a sense of decay.
Nothing could be further from the truth today. You step into a wide, white, open space, one of England's great church interiors. There, high above you, is the glorious roof and the angels of God. The brick floors spread around the scraped font, which still bears its dedicatory inscription and standing places for participants. You turn into the central gangway, and more than twenty empty indents for brasses stretch before you. Dowsing can be blamed for the destruction of hardly any of them. In reality, you see the work of 18th and 19th century thieves and collectors.
The bench-ends are superb. The benches themselves were reconstructed in the late 19th century, supposedly from the main post of Westleton windmill, but the ends are some of the county's finest medieval images. There are basically three series: the seven deadly sins, the seven works of mercy, and the four seasons. There are also angels bearing symbols of the Holy Trinity and the crown. Examples of all of these can be seen below; hover on them to read a description, click on them to see them enlarged.
The rood screen is a disappointment; most of it is modern, and the medieval bits perfunctory and scoured. Having said this, note how tiny the exit from the north aisle rood loft stair is. Also at this end of the church, notice a bare scattering of medieval glass, including some Saints.
But step through the central aisle to see something remarkable. The choir stalls are fronted by exquisite carvings of the 12 apostles, evangelists, and even figures who may be King Anna and his daughter St Etheldreda. She founded the priory that became Ely Cathedral, and there is a local connection because her father was killed at the Battle of Blythburgh. It seems likely that there was a shrine to them here.
Seeing these sixteen carvings is a bit like gobbling up a very large box of chocolates, but it is worth stopping to consider quite how genuine they all are. For a start, there could not have been choir stalls here in medieval times, and in any case we know that these desks and their frontages were in the north aisle chapel until the 19th century. They were used as school benches in the 17th century; they still bear holes for inkpots, and the graffiti of a bored Dutch child (his father was probably working on draining the marshes) is dated 1665 - you can see it in the left-hand column. There is nothing at all like them anywhere else in Suffolk, and although we know that they predate the restoration of Holy Trinity (and therefore almost certainly come from here originally) they seem of too high a quality to come from such a rural outback. In short, they are not medieval, whatever the guidebooks say.
Whatever, the east end of the chancel and aisles are thrillingly modern, wholly devotional. In the north aisle, traditionally the Hopton chantry, extraordinary friezes of skeletons become symbols of the four evangelists behind the altar. Beside them, with a view into the sanctuary, is one of Suffolk's biggest Easter sepulchres, tomb of the Hoptons. In the surviving sedilia of the high altar, we find Peter Ball's beautiful Madonna and Child and a fine Holy Trinity plate, which distract perhaps only slightly from the Jewish imagery above the reredos. It is all just about perfect.
Tucked to one side of the organ is a clockjack; Suffolk has two, and the other is down-river at Southwold. They date from the late 17th century, and presumably once struck the hours; at high church Blythburgh and Southwold today, they are used to announce the entry of the ministers.
You may be reading this entry in a far-off land; or perhaps you are here at home. Whatever, if you have not visited this church, then I urge you to do so. It is the most beautiful church in Suffolk, a wonderful art object, and it is always open in daylight. It remains one of the most significant medieval buildings in England. If you only visit one of Suffolk's churches, then make it this one.

For this shoot Tara let me use her camera. We were "racing" the sun while taking these, but I'm very happy with the shots that we did get, and how well they turned out. This girl was a big inspiration to me when I started taking photography seriously.

We tend to celebrate light in our pictures. Understanding how light interacts with the camera is paramount to the work we do. The temperature, intensity and source of light can wield different photography effect on the same subject or scene; add ISO, aperture and speed, the camera, the lens type, focal length and filters…the combination is varied ad multi-layered and if you know how to use them all, you will come to appreciate that all lights are useful, even those surrounded by a lot of darkness.
We are guided by three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, our longing to capture in print, that which is beautiful, the constant search for the one picture, and constant barrage of new equipment and style of photography. These passions, like great winds, have blown us across the globe in search of the one and we do understand the one we do look for might be this picture right here for someone else out there.

Perception was, unfortunately, not on my side on the way up Analby Road. I missed both the last 55 to get and the urgent blood car I've been looking for since at least October. God damn. Anyway, here's a close, close save of a Fastcat that looks just a little bit unusual and miscoloured. Late last September, old 'Fluffy' was involved in a crash on the Humber Bridge, totally bending in the front end and thereby requiring a front end rebuild. It can be safely said that not all has gone well. Mismatched paint, no logos... yikes. First for the new livery, maybe?
Seen here back on the road a few months after a shunt on the Humber Bridge with a new front end, Stagecoach Lincolnshire RoadCar's 'Humber Fastcat'-branded 26174, a 2017 ADL Enviro 200MMC presumably formerly known as 'Fluffy', is seen coming up Anlaby Road on a 350 to Scunthorpe.
One of the many old over the counter medicines you used to get and this must have been in the family for a good few years. It boasts of an active ingredient, Cetylpyridinium chloride, that is still in use mostly I gather in mouth washes. Usually a lot of the constituents of these sorts of things are now long on the banned list - I see this has chloroform in as did Victory V lozenges back in the day.
J W Wigglesworth, founded in Bolton and whose main factory was in nearby Westhoughton, was one of a number of patent medicine producers in Lancashire at the time. I do recall that they used the advertising strapline "Pills for all ills". This tin survives as, like many others, it was reused for pins by my grandma Clegg.
Straight up this is my favorite shot of this project so far. I can't stop looking at those eyes. Or that cheeky grin.
She was walking into a classy women's clothing store with a friend when I made my request. She graciously accepted. The footpath was crowded with people and we had to wait for a lull in the traffic before I could move around her to a better position. The sun was high in the sky and I didn't want to risk over exposing any part of her photos.
She told me she was spending a day in the city shopping. I asked if there was anything in particular she hoped to get and she responded saying "Candles". Keeping things rolling I asked for more detail: did she want scented candles or just plain household ones? "No, no, I said sandals".
This shot is practically straight out of camera, all I've done is increase the contrast slightly. I have not added any of my usual text to this because I didn't want anything at all to draw your attention away from those eyes. Because there's no text I'm able to upload at full size, so check out the huge original version. Best viewed in the lightbox.
This is the thirty first portrait of my attempt at the 100 strangers project.
I see photos like this circling around tumblr, so I thought I'd take a stab at it.
I feel like my generation is the generation of go-getters, and dream chasers. We aren't easily held back. I love it.
and NO, this is not my handwriting, haha I'm a lefty, meaning my handwriting is super sloppy.
But, it is my girlfriends handwriting. :]! It legitimately looks like font.

Emmy 'Candy' Moretti (Nonois Resident) steps steadily from the graveyard, Hands shaking with excitement as she lugged the machine meant for cargo loading through the city, thankfully finding her green haired greed in the gateway of old crow Territory ‘’Es’’ the name was said as a call, a siren to the waters ‘’We need to move the demons, She moved away’’ That was it, All the explanation Esme would get and she would continue to walk down to the Diner with machine scraping on rickety wheels behind her. Maybe Greed would put two and two together, Maybe she would know from their destination what had happened, Either way determination gripped Gluttony like an obsession.
Esmeralda (Esmeralda Siamendes) After ventures of the day past, the emerald haired had wandered back to home in the swamp. Days seemed like weeks and weeks felt like hours in the freedom that mind offered. Soon again she would have been stirred, called back, drawn back to the city and the distractions it offered. Needs had been sated, dormant as of late, Demon seemingly contented with surprising her with its howling. As a result she had found herself wandering back to graveyards, the sleeping ones well known from past family. It seemed their Demons had called to each other for, no sooner has she reached location, that sibling with strange contraption had been spotted. It was without a thought she had started following, to her Gluttony always wanting to observe her doings, even if not understanding statement at first. It was only as the Diner drew closer that it dawned upon them. An expression of displeasure and slight ire passed in mismatched colors as she would voice the feelings in rapid and snapped words "Nah, it can't be! If she be too far... She can't forget!" she finishes with a growl, a whole new vigor to her steps as she advanced forward. A gaze inside the Diner would confirm her fear, Mollie having always been here when she had come to the place, therefore her disappearance could only mean one thing. With a furious shake of her head, frame would push her way inside, eyes holding the embers of ire as she looked at the NPC. The man had seen her enough that he would disappear to the back room with a groan and yelp in voice. Making beeline for the jukebox, features would take on a wary expression, feeling a pulsing coming from the machine, even if only mind seemed to be conjuring such an idea. Gazing back to the door, likely where her companion should be by now, she queried "How long has she been gone?" tone alike a doctor asking about a patient. And in a way, the woman was. A carefully nurtured patient, formated to heal and come to form wished for.
Emmy 'Candy' Moretti (Nonois Resident) thankfully pushed the Contraption inside with little issue other than the weight of the thing, A casual nod given to the fleeing couple would leave her with little worry as she pushed contraption toward Jukebox ‘’She got the pizza place about five ays ago, I managed ta find her and she will be in the shop to collect her ‘new’ Jukebox on friday, I would of told ya sooner but other things got in the way’’ she moved quickly, hand seeking the plug socket to switched off the thing which alarmingly would cut short any music and lights from it. ‘’She knows I own the shop, We aint got much time to get this to my place, we gotta do it, We gotta do it’’ she mumbled, now a bond or connection needed on a personal level so Emmy could watch Mollies demons grow ‘’Help me lift it up’’ she muttered under her breath, Unplugging the juke box and tying the wires together so they would not trail on the floor.
Esmeralda (Esmeralda Siamendes) A spare glance would be shot at the departing couple, having her focus soon move to Emmy pushing the trolley in front of her and into the store. Gaze would return to the machinery however, the tick at the corner of eyes coming back to life. The jukebox had long been causing her distress. She knew the devils that roamed within it where very different than her own. How did she know of it? From where such certainty had been gained? It was amazing what demented and paranoid mind could make itself believe. Vision had been calmer as of late, less violent and sudden, but the musical box had colors distort, seemingly breathing alike living being. The pull of the plug would break the spell with a startle of frame, lids blinking quickly over vision as she focused on her pink haired and her words, returning to present moment. "Pizza? By da gas station?" she would query as she drew closer and lifted a tantalizing callused palm. Beneath, the humming of electricity had stopped, having her exhale raggedly. "We can't let it be. Dey be out, dey be wat reminds her of dem. Dey are close when we can't always be. She needs it" she states with a rapid nod as she would move to other side. Fingers used to manual duty would curl around an edge, trying to grip side and, if sibling lifted in unison, she would help push it slowly towards trolley. Side that was recently bruised would protest with agony, and malnurishment would have white pangs explode in vision, but to carry and drag to contraption so close, she would be able to do it.
Emmy 'Candy' Moretti (Nonois Resident) continued to push, however her Input would be far from helpful, she did indeed put most of her strength into the manoeuvring ‘’tilt it back, Then slip the edge on’’ she mumbled through grunts, Already pulling it backwards so the bottom dyes would catch the two prongs meant to carry its weight ‘’Es, push the trolley?’’ it was a grunt, her frame holding the small jukebox as muscles tensed and back twinged in protest. IF Esme did indeed push the trolley forward, Jukebox would be pushed forward as well, causing the Frame of the music machine to rock onto the Mechanism she had brought down from her shop ‘’She does need it, I promise we will get it to her, I will make the demons stronger so she has to be stronger, We can do it Es’’ the words were said again with multiple grunts and groans, urgency in her tone as she did not want to be caught.
Esmeralda (Esmeralda Siamendes) In the backroom, NPC could be heard mumbling, but in present moment, focus was solely captured. The mossy devil could feel muscles pull and ache as they angled and rested the jukebox against wall, fingers turning white at the pressure of the movement. At first, reaction would not be gained as she was asked about trolley but soon she would be nodding and straightening. Movements were rapid, fueled with unhealthy energy as both ire and dementia threatened to spill over. Mollie could not be freed. Could not let demons behind. She needed... She needed.... The litany mind had fallen into would end with a grunt as she pushed the trolley forward, its metal dentition gripping underneath weight of the jukebox and having it rock atop the contraption before settling into place. Callused palm would be lifted, wiping sweat away from uneven features as she exhaled raggedly, rapid pants having her words carry "We can. We need her to see. She be so close...." the words stated with an intensity in gaze that almost scorched. They could not let the girl go. The Devouring had been unleashed, it had to finish its course.

What a way to go
On our 218 km midweek ride along the north coast of Mallorca. A route I can't recommend enough. Can get (and was) quite tough if you have head wind and are powering over all the little (and not so little) ramps and rollers.

Auf unserer 218 km Runde in der Woche entlang der Nordküste von Mallorca. Eine Strecke die ich nicht hoch genug empfehlen kann. Sie kann allerdings (und sie wurde auch) sehr anstrengend sein, wenn man dort Gegenwind hat und die ganzen (kleinen und nicht so kleinen) Rampen und Wellen durchdrückt.

This bamboo viper (Trimereserus stejnegeri) was spotted positioning itself, hanging from the wall, above the mouth of a tunnel that Formosan lesser horseshoe bats (Rhinolophus momoceros) use as a roost. It was a difficult shot to get, and my light made the snake recoil a little, so it's hard to see how it was initially extending itself out into the flight path of the passing bats. I switched to a blue light and waited for five minutes as the snake and its prey relaxed to see if a bat would pass close enough, but in the end, the mosquitoes chased me off.

Went into Argos and got Bratz Study Abroad Yasmin I only need 1 more and I will get her next week, popped into Asda they didn't the packs I didn't think they would since it is a small one but they did have Zelf's they had 6 new ones I needed now I only need 2 more just hope they are not hard to find, plus the limited edition one no news on that yet, they also had the classic Equestria girls 2 for £14 plus the pixie punkz 2 pack was finally reduced not in the picture I forgot lol, TRU still had no new MH but some more of the new Barbie I might get some next week they had the rockers ones and the sister packs, I also noticed some really cute Disney toddler mini sets and some princess dolls reduced I am also thinking about getting, and some Vamps merch which I want but it's kind of pricey I might see if any of it goes on clearance, T.K Maxx had the Zelfs Toad stall twirl n swing playset for £7.99 not bad so I got it, and a Lalaloopsy scraps finally reduced to £10 not bad, Entertainer didn't have the project MC2 but they are kind of slow on getting things I hope they do soon, it would be handy since they are under one number but there was no shelf space so maybe they haven't put them out everything was crowded, but I got some good stuff.

Basically the same again with the hope of improved quality o the web
My first exposures with a 5x4 camera.
reading 64 seconds, actual, 154 seconds. For reciprocity.
If any-one has a table for longer exposures with velvia, I would appreciate a heads up.
Also I had no colour correction filters, so not sure what colour It might have been! any guesses?
My first tentative go at 5x4 film use.
A little soft, (out of focus)!,
My rudimentary metering was a little out,
and first attempt at film processing at home not the best.
But its the image I went up there to get, and as a first shot, I,m fairly happy.
Still mountains (sorry couldn't help that)! to learn.

This past week had the Hy-Lite team and I rockin' out a few cool events. And, as luck would have it, before the dust settles we have a few more right around the corner! Tis the season around here.
Our week started out with a 3 day event for Loreal in Boca. I was personally around for the 1st and 2nd evenings events. Monday was an ice breaker event poolside. As the load in schedule was a bit tight, all right....REALLY tight, I wasn't able to get any shots :( I must say though, it looked awesome, and I wish I did. I hung around to actually help tear down (sometimes its the only exercise I get), and must say that the cool South Florida air coming off the ocean coupled with the sound of the ocean waves actually served as a bit of therapy. What a great evening it truly was. I guess its all in the perspective sometimes.
This image was created from the 2nd evenings event. Bruce Sutka and his team of artisans created what most of the resort staff referred to as the most impressive use of that room they had ever seen! I must say, its always great to be part of the magic :)

This photo shows a Thaloid Liverwort (non-vascular plant) found growing at the edge of a pond on Frances and David Dover's acreage. You can see the rhizoids that anchor it, also a few tiny water creatures (seen on friend Sandy's hand). Well found, Sandy, as this is a tracked liverwort (S2). We have only seen it at one location in Calgary, along the edge of one of the ponds at Pearce Estate. I was at that location in 2008 and again on 27 August 2013, when it was discovered there.
"In ancient times, it was believed that liverworts cured diseases of the liver, hence the name. In Old English, the word liverwort literally means liver plant. This probably stemmed from the superficial appearance of some thalloid liverworts (which resemble a liver in outline), and led to the common name of the group as hepatics, from the Latin word hēpaticus for "belonging to the liver". An unrelated flowering plant, Hepatica, is sometimes also referred to as liverwort because it was once also used in treating diseases of the liver. This archaic relationship of plant form to function was based in the "Doctrine of Signatures".
The greatest impact of Liverworts is through the reduction of erosion along streambanks, their collection and retention of water in tropical forests, and the formation of soil crusts in deserts and polar regions. However, a few species are used by humans directly. A few species, such as Riccia fluitans, are aquatic thallose liverworts sold for use in aquariums. I will copy and paste the description I posted on Flickr from our first visit to the Dover's property, on 7 August 2015:
"Yesterday, 7 August 2015, four of us were extremely fortunate to have the chance to visit the home and highly varied topographic 62-acre property belonging to Frances and David Dover. We felt honoured and privileged to meet and spend time with Frances and David, and also their daughter Carolyn and her husband Clair. A delightful family who welcomed us so warmly into their home and land.
This acreage of grassland, forest, rolling hills - and special gardens - is not far from Millarville, SW of Calgary. In fact, it's in an area that I often drive through when I only have time for, or only feel like doing, a short drive. Amazing what little gems exist out there.
This is not just a beautiful property, but is very special for various reasons. For one thing, read any history of Alberta and you will find the Dover family, including David's mother, Mary Dover. Second, among the trees and open "lawns", there are Peony flower beds, containing 100-150 heritage Peonies, each one different, that have now multiplied to more than 300 plants. Unfortunately, they bloomed a couple of weeks early this year, and all the flowers had gone to seed. Another open area had a different kind of ground cover - Thyme, which smelled wonderful. If I remember correctly, this was the open space where the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra performed on one occasion!
There are two large ponds on the property and another smaller area of water that they hope to turn into a Japanese Garden. It was while walking around the latter that a large brown 'shape' could be seen through the dense trees - a handsome Moose buck. I will look properly at the four or so photos I just managed to get and will slip one of them into my photostream sometime soon, just for the record, definitely not for the photo quality : ) This was also where a Great Horned Owl was seen flying through the trees by some of us (not me, ha!).
There are grassy paths winding through the acreage, up and down hill, that take David seven hours to mow. They are not pristine, velvety paths, but instead, they seem to take nothing away from the wildness of the whole area. One of the animals that have passed through is the Cougar. In fact, several years ago, I saw a video taken on a nearby (or adjacent?) property, where a 'kill' and night-time camera had been set up and a total of six different Cougar individuals were seen!
Even the Dover's home is unique and beautiful. It is completely built of concrete - floors, walls, ceilings, roof, deck, and so on. A Hummingbird feeder and regular bird feeders, set up on the patio, attract a variety of birds. We sat on the patio after our walk to eat our packed lunches - and to enjoy a delicious Orange Pound Cake that Frances had made for us, along with refreshing Iced Tea - thank you so much for this, Frances! Yesterday, while I was waiting for one of three tiny Calliope Hummingbirds to come back, I was lucky enough to see a little Mountain Chickadee, along with many Pine Siskins. We could also hear a Red-tailed Hawk in the area.
There is just so much I could write about this visit and family. Instead, or for now, I will add several links to more information on the Internet. This was a memorable day for us. We tend to celebrate light in our pictures. Understanding how light interacts with the camera is paramount to the work we do. The temperature, intensity and source of light can wield different photography effect on the same subject or scene; add ISO, aperture and speed, the camera, the lens type, focal length and filters…the combination is varied ad multi-layered and if you know how to use them all, you will come to appreciate that all lights are useful, even those surrounded by a lot of darkness.
We are guided by three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, our longing to capture in print, that which is beautiful, the constant search for the one picture, and constant barrage of new equipment and style of photography. These passions, like great winds, have blown us across the globe in search of the one and we do understand the one we do look for might be this picture right here for someone else out there.

Sindy has been really bored with all the rain we have been getting and she finally managed to get out on a little roadtrip. Fluff joined her and we all went on a shopping spree in Gekås in Ullared, where people travel from all of the country and a reality show is being recorded as well. None of us had ever been there before (its 120 km from here so a managable little day trip). As we stepped out of the car in Ullared it felt like being abroad, a heat wave had arrived as we were on the road, there was an air of happy excitement about and the smell of things being barbecued in the nearby restaurants was in the air. I bought some new Lundby stuff for about half of what it would cost in the expensive toystores around here, we all had a great day and I actually wish I had done some more shopping but I will return, hehe! ;) Sindy was curious about an old windmill by the roadside and had us stop so she could check it out. It was quite windy and I didn't venture out into the field as there would most likely be lots of ticks out there and I was wearing a skirt but I still managed to get a quick shot of her ;)

Another Model Mayhem shoot tonight. Hope is the first of a string that are in response to me posting a casting call for people interested in vintage / noir styles. If they are all as much fun as this was, it'll be a good month or so.
We met up in Balboa park near Hillcrest, in the middle of a big power outage in the area. So things were darker than ordinary, which was a little complicated. I was really looking forward to trying out the radio triggers over a longer period and in setups that I'm more familiar with to see how their usage really compared with the IR triggering built in to my Canon flashes. But given that the power was out everywhere, I ran (again) into the fact that without a focus-assist lamp, focusing in the dark is a no-go. So the first half of these (the non-smoking ones) were done with IR triggering. For the cigar shots we moved to another location in the park and stood below a street lamp so that I could have enough light to focus. The radio triggers really shined here, having a wide-open space and opposing lights, scenarios that never work with the IR.
Less technologically, this was an interesting shoot because it gave me a chance to practice my, "Oh, I'm official and respectable, you should let me shoot where I want" skilz. The caretaker for our first location (the Marston House in the park) saw us as we were walking up to the place and asked us what we were up to. I casually and calmly described it to him, he seemed surprised, but let us go about our business. After a few minutes of shooting I tracked him down to show him what we were getting, and how we were showcasing "his" location, which seemed to draw him into the process. It was a good feeling.
The other notable happy accident was the lamp posts. I didn't really think about the color of the lamp posts in the park (at least on the west side) being blue, or that they basically match the color of cigar smoke. I was not really intending to do these in color originally, but after just the first couple shots the color was so compelling that it necessitated a change in plans.
Fun stuff, all in all.
Strobist info: 2x 430s in 1/2" grid @ 1/8, camera left and camera right. Left is about 4 feet away, right is about 6-8, hence the difference in light and contrast. Triggered via RadioPopper JrX transmitter and JrX studio receivers.
This was the most elusive of the juncos. I tried the whole day to capture this beautiful male in better light, this was the closest shot I could get and in total shade, and not that sharp. I saw my first male oregon in Jasper but did not have my camera with me. I did not realize this sub-species travelled this far north so imagine my surprise when it was sighted with all the colourful juncos here today. Many birds have come to visit me this summer/fall and I am very grateful.
The juncos were chased by the squirrel, grackles, jays, and white-throated sparrows. They really had to work for any food they got.

Model Amanda Bossi, Pittsburgh, PA. I was experimenting with using lens board angles to change focus. it wasn't easy to estimate the result I would get and the Busch Pressman camera I used had limited options. I was happy to have her mouth be the primary focus.

I was walking into town and found these battered doors next to a car garage that I thought would be cool to use for a more environmental portrait. Unfortunately the street was pretty quiet, and so I had to wait around for a while for a stranger that I felt would suit the picture to come along.
Fortunately I saw Yusef coming along the street with a friend, and was drawn to his relaxed look and the cool stripy top that he was wearing. I got chatting to him and explained what I was wanting to do, and he kindly agreed to stop for a few minutes and help me out.
Yusef was studying accounting and finance in Nottingham, but was over in Leicester visiting family. He had been out shopping, and had a bag from an electronics store- I guessed that he had just bought himself the new Grand Theft Auto game and was right.
In many ways this is the shot that I set out to get, and prefer it to the B&W one, but decided not to change my theme of B&W shots for my main 100 strangers projects yet.

The Friends meeting I attend reached unity to go forward with a Black lives Matter mural on the front of our building. We'll be finishing it next Sunday.
When Black people get free, everybody gets free by Alicia Garza
#BlackLivesMatter doesn’t mean your life isn’t important–it means that Black lives, which are seen as without value within White supremacy, are important to your liberation. Given the disproportionate impact state violence has on Black lives, we understand that when Black people in this country get free, the benefits will be wide reaching and transformative for society as a whole. When we are able to end hyper-criminalization and sexualization of Black people and end the poverty, control, and surveillance of Black people, every single person in this world has a better shot at getting and staying free. When Black people get free, everybody gets free. This is why we call on Black people and our allies to take up the call that Black lives matter. We’re not saying Black lives are more important than other lives, or that other lives are not criminalized and oppressed in various ways. We remain in active solidarity with all oppressed people who are fighting for their liberation and we know that our destinies are intertwined.
And, to keep it real–it is appropriate and necessary to have strategy and action centered around Blackness without other non-Black communities of color, or White folks for that matter, needing to find a place and a way to center themselves within it. It is appropriate and necessary for us to acknowledge the critical role that Black lives and struggles for Black liberation have played in inspiring and anchoring, through practice and theory, social movements for the liberation of all people. The women’s movement, the Chicano liberation movement, queer movements, and many more have adopted the strategies, tactics and theory of the Black liberation movement. And if we are committed to a world where all lives matter, we are called to support the very movement that inspired and activated so many more. That means supporting and acknowledging Black lives.
As the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train continues southward into the Quad Cities, I wanted a shot of it that nobody else would get. And I did. It was a very tough shot, as the open Skydeck was closed, but the sky bridge was open. So, I went for broke and got this. If you look carefully, you can see the Government Bridge on the top right; an Iowa Interstate had a track warrant to come across, but alas, no over/under for me here.Still, it's a neat view of the city from up there. It is spooky to go into the main entrance by the river, as the casino is gone, there's debris everywhere, and it's dark as all get out at night with no lights off to the right.
