Originally designed to be convertable between 'Broad' and 'Standard' Gauge, R766 has become the only member of its class to actually make the transition.

The Joravarnagar- Sayla Railway was a 2'6" narrow gauge railway that ran for 28km from Joravarnagar (on a WR metre gauge line) to the small walled town of Sayla. The line was built in 1948 as part of Saurashtra Railway system and was closed in October 1987.

Motive power was provided by T class 4-8-0s, four of which had been built for the Morvi Tramway, coming from three different builders!

Two locos were out-stationed on the line, but only one loco was required to provide the twice daily run and on 27 October 1978 T602 (built Hudswell Clarke 1935) was in charge.

The sugar mill at Saraya near Gorakphur in India was a living museum and the Sikh owners always showed incredible hospitality to visiting railway enthusiasts. The mill operated a variety of steam locomotives on both metre and narrow gauge (2'6"). On the latter, no.54 was an 0-6-2 built by Kitson & Co. of Leeds in 1900, originally for service with the North Western Railway. The owners arranged this working to the cane fields for us complete with inspection saloon on the rear - 10 February 1979.

ALCo DL537 A-9106 brings a disabled DMU as a passenger train through the narrow gauge shop and servicing area at Pireas. The line coming from Patras split the car shops to the right and the roundhouse to the left. At 1530 the sun still stood high and there were 40 degrees in the shade (104 F) on June 24, 1997.

The car shop entrance is now closed, the roundhouse area is disconnected from rail access.

The large building in the background belongs to the locomotive shops (standard and narrow gauge) which remain active.

Distance between 2 points is sometimes a tough thing to gauge, as it usually involves other reference points along the way to give us perspective. We usually don't notice those reference points on a day to day basis, only when we need to determine the "end point" do we realize they had been there the whole time to guide us.

On the 760mm gauge line from Orjahovo to Cerven Breg in Bulgaria, 2-10-2T 607 waits a station or two out from Cerven Breg with an inbound train on 9 January 1976. These were built by Schwarzkopff (Germany 1940) and Chrzanov (Poland 1949), but there is some confusion of which locos were built by which builder.

The Orjahovo line closed c2003, but another 76mm line between Septemvri-Dobrinishte is still open and diesel operated. A similar loco (609) to this one has been preserved in operational condition and sees occasional use on charters out of Septemvri.

Not my finest shot by any means but after looking back through some old Urbex pictures I decided to put this up as I liked the experimental side, the geometric shapes inside the images and the missing dial.

There is (or was) a network of meter gauge rail lines in the Basque area of northern Spain. On August 7, 1966, FV motor #16 arrives in Durango, Spain, with an eastbound passenger train. The 16 was built in 1950. "FV" are the initials for the Ferrocarriles Vascongados, one of the larger regional railroads. Durango is in the province of Biscay in Basque Country between Bilbao and San Sebastián.

Im back, life has been so hectic that I have had no time to flickr. I decided to sit down and go through my holiday photos from January, most of the ones that I love are of old machinery, buildings and homes. Something a bit different from the usual macros that I post.

The last full day of operations during the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad's 2010 "Railfest" event featured a special passenger extra, with a string of coaches painted to resemble D&RGW passenger equipment from the 1930s, and K-28 Locomotive #473, complete with green boiler jacket. Most of the passengers on this day were railfan photographers, who paid a premium fare not only for the special train, but for some photo run-bys at various locations on their trip to Silverton. As a special bonus, this train traveled the 45-mile route in tandem with a short freight train, pulled by D&RGW Consolidation #315, which would also perform some run-bys.

In this frame, the passenger extra is pulling onto the siding at Rockwood, CO (MP 469.1), to await the passage of one of the line's regular northbound tourist trains.

It was a very dull day in February 2005 when I had the opportunity to spend some time at the line side near Bikaner Junction station in Rajasthan. Fortunately, there was still an operational Metre Gauge line serving the station as well as the Broad Gauge line visible in the foreground of this image. Indian Railways YDM-4 6637 was undertaking a spot of stock shunting to provide the MG action.
