The New River is an artificial waterway in England, opened in 1613 to supply London with fresh drinking water taken from the River Lea and from Chadwell Springs and, originally, Amwell Springs,[1] as well as other springs and wells along its course.
The river follows the land contours but certain parts have been straightened over the centuries. Although it was at one time threatened with closure, the waterway continues to supply water to the capital. There is a designated walking route along the canal called the New River Path. It is a 28-mile (45 km) long-distance footpath which follows the course of the New River as closely as possible from its source in Hertfordshire to its original end in Islington, London
The completely renewed locomotive 77 002 by Express Service is already on duty on the Rhodope narrow gauge line! We have waited to see the locomotive in operation for quite a long time. It was ready and transferred in Septemvri depot in March 2022, but due to some administrative hiccups, its commissioning was delayed quite a bit. After all, about a month ago, the locomotive was put into operation, with a new number - 77 102, and since then it has been tirelessly and without any problems serving trains on the narrow gauge. The modernization of the locomotive which has been manufactured in Romania in the 80s was carried out by the Express Service workshop in Ruse, Bulgaria. In practice, only the frame and bogies are used from the old locomotive. Cabs and the body shells were removed and re-build using brand new materials. The loco is equipped with electronic controls and also with a brand new Caterpilar diesel engine with EU stage 5 standard.
On the photo 77 102 is seen on train 1661, between the stations of Yakoruda and Belitsa, near Dagonovo stop /15 October 2022/
Video of the renovated locomotive is available here:

Schmalsprromantik im Steyrtal
Caught the backside of this iron lady in her engine shed on a rainy sunday. This beatuiful narrow gauge steam locomotive was built in 1898 and its is one of the oldest steam locomotives in Austria still operational. All these locomotives were beaten quite heavily in regular service until 1980 (!) when the entire line was shut down by Austrian Federal Rawilways (ÖBB). Some engaged railroad enthusiats were able to purchase and preserve part of the "Steyrtal Line". The "Steyrtalbahn" as it is called has been operated as a heritage or museum realway since then. www.oegeg.at/startseite/english-summary/
A wood duck gauges the distance to the nest box, prior to take off. The morning sun is still low in the sky, so that the area is in the shadow of the surrounding trees. One beam of light shines through the trees, illuminating the bird's colors and the rings in the water.

The Wash
South Holland
In 2015, a new tidal gauge was installed in The Wash. It will help the Environment Agency measure tides, predict flooding and assess the impact of climate change more accurately.
it completes a national network of 44 gauges that record information about sea levels to provide more accurate forecasts.
The instrument is on a platform measuring approximately 2 meters across and 11 meters above sea level. It’s located 4km offshore in The Wash close to the port of Sutton Bridge.

An old gauging station on the Souris River above Minot, ND. These are odd things when you see them, but produce important real-time data on the height of the water in their stream. These old concrete ones just seem so out of place and strange to encounter in the middle of nowhere.
This is a screw gauge for measuring the gauge (thickness) of a screw. Rescued this from my grandfather's workshop a long time ago..

This is on a section of the 760mm gauge Agnita line which ran from Sighisoara to Sibiu. It opened in stages between 1895 and 1910 and was closed throughout in 2001. At the time of building this line was in Hungary and didn't become part of Romania until 1919.
Check the gauge. Twist the stopcock. Ease the lever. Top-up the automatic lubricator. Check the gauge. Adjust the lever. Wipe the metal with the oily rag. Wipe the oily hands on the trouser. Check the fire. Check the gauge. Open the valve, just a little. Lift the peak of the cap. Mop the brow. Wipe the hands on the jacket. Appreciate the compact layout of the modern engine. Retrieve the lunch box. Enjoy the sandwich. Savour the scotch egg. Hanker after a piece of chocolate. Check for tea. Finesse the lever. Check the gauge.
And don’t forget to clean out the boiler every fourteen days.
I had great fun today trying out my new lens in the caves, it was a big tide, so lots of time to look for anything of interest. This area took my eye, for it's macabre appearance. I haven't got a clue for a track, but as we've just got tickets to see Pixies, I guess Gauge away is as good as any. Erosion in it many forms has gauged away this cave.

Almost two decades have passed since any grain has been moved over broad gauge tracks in South Australia.
