Golden Gate Highlands National Park is located in Free State, South Africa, near the Lesotho border. It covers an area of 340 km². The park's most notable features are its golden, ochre, and orange-hued, deeply eroded sandstone cliffs and outcrops, especially the Brandwag rock.
Standing 150 feet above the Price River, Castle Gate is a rock monument composed of Castlegate sandstone, a fine to coarse-grained, quartzose sandstone, including conglomerate layers.
Castle Gate was deposited by ancient braided streams during the Cretaceous period, approximately 145 to 66 million years ago.
