Jioufen (九份), Taiwan
it was almost 9, and we saw this tiny garbage truck coming into the narrow streets of the old town of Jioufen.
the garbage truck is smaller than average ones you see at Taiwan just so that it actually fits the crowded tourist attraction spot.
The Japanese garbage trucks I saw were like half-scale models of the trucks at home.
One thing that makes this possible is that people discard less. Paper napkins with meals and paper towels in bathrooms are very rare. (Some bathrooms have air dryers, but most Japanese carry a sort of handkerchief with them for this.) Public waste receptacles are also rare. Vending machines have recycling containers right next to them.

Here in Japan, garbage is a complex process. First you have to sort out the recyclables (into glass, plastic, tin cans, steel cans, and food trays) and the special items (batteries, light bulbs, hairspray cans, and the like). Then twice a week you carry your garbage to the trash collection point. Some folks have different bags for burnable and non-burnable trash. I read about one city that has over 20 different categories for trash.
A yearling cinnamon phase black bear stands beside one of his favorite "fast food stores"...I hope he does not become a real nuisance and end his life prematurely! This bear was inside the "city" limits of St. Mary, Montana. Although I really enjoyed this encounter I wish he were miles away from this easy life!

In a little alcove off the cabana is this disgusting little mini garbage dump. I'm not sure why this stuff is here, there is a dumpster about 20 yards away.
