The High Sierra Trail crosses alpine terrain near Kaweah Gap
I have been reviewing my older archives of raw files recently, partly because it simply is important to do so from time to time, and partly because I'm between locations and looking for additional images to work on. Any time I go back through the older files I find things that are interesting, and occasionally I even find some excellent photographs that I overlooked the first time around.
This photograph comes from 2008. To me it seems more interesting as a record of a particular place and a particular event than on a purely photographic basis. (I could have wished for a more interesting sky!) This was my second crossing of the High Sierra Trail, which we followed from the west side of Sequoia National Park, across the entire range, to the summit of Mount Whitney, and then down to Whitney Portal. On this trip I traveled with a group of long-time backcountry friends... unlike the first time I did this trip perhaps 25 years earlier, when I did it with my wife. I made this photograph from the top of Kaweah Gap, the pass through the Great Western Divide before dropping into Big Arroyo. The photograph looks back to the west, across the trail we had ascended to reach this point.

Adoration of the Magi with Saint Anthony Abbot, detail Virgin Mary with child [1390-1410]
LA Getty Center - GAP wm
******************************************************************************
Against an intensely red background strewn with golden star motifs, the scene of the Epiphany unfolds in a composition that is strictly frontal yet richly articulated. The painting combines the central New Testament theme of the Adoration of the newborn Christ by the three Magi from the East with the unusual, though iconographically meaningful, inclusion of Saint Anthony Abbot.
At the centre of the composition sits the Virgin Mary, holding the Christ Child on her lap, while Joseph appears slightly recessed behind her. The Child is not depicted as a passive recipient of veneration, but as a lively, active figure: with both hands he reaches out for the gold coins that are being offered to him. This seemingly playful gesture may also be interpreted as a conscious acceptance of his royal dignity, while at the same time emphasising his active role within the economy of salvation.
The eldest of the three kings, Caspar, kneels in reverent devotion before the Child; the crown laid aside beside him signifies the submission of worldly authority to divine sovereignty.
On the left-hand side of the panel, prominently set apart from the main group, appears Saint Anthony Abbot. His presence does not constitute a merely narrative addition, but rather points to the specific institutional and social context in which the painting was produced. Anthony is depicted as a bearded old man wearing monastic habit and bearing those attributes that crystallised in the High and Late Middle Ages: the abbatial staff with a Tau-shaped handle as a sign of his office, a bell, and a pig.
The pig is not part of the early Christian tradition surrounding Saint Anthony, but derives instead from the activities of the Order of the Antonines, which from the late eleventh century onwards specialised in the care of patients suffering from so-called St Anthony’s Fire. This condition most commonly referred to forms of ergotism, caused by the consumption of rye contaminated with ergot fungus. The medical practices developed by the Antonines – in particular dietary changes and the application of ointments – led to tangible cures and account for the saint’s extraordinary popularity in the later Middle Ages. The keeping of pigs was a special privilege of the order; these animals, marked by a bell around the neck, were allowed to roam freely. On the symbolic level, pigs have long stood for sensuality and lust; their popular interpretation as agents of temptation reflects the late medieval association of sin, diabolical temptation and illness.
The combination of an Epiphany scene with the veneration of Saint Anthony suggests that the painting was originally intended for an ecclesiastical or hospital setting, possibly in connection with a hospital run by the Antonines. In this context, the image of the healing Christ Child acquires an additional layer of meaning: the adoration of the Redeemer is linked to the concrete hope for bodily healing and divine assistance.
Stylistically, the work belongs to the International Gothic style, which dominated European courtly art around 1400. Characteristic features include the sumptuous garments of the kings trimmed with fur, the decorative flatness of the background, and an elegant, graphically accentuated line that goes hand in hand with a heightened interest in the differentiation of fabrics and figures. The fusion of courtly splendour with religious symbolism corresponds to the representational aspirations of a cultivated and affluent patron in late medieval Burgundy.

WEEK 20 – Closing the Gap (VI)
Finally for today (and, save one additional photo set to upload next week, for this album), one last look at the store's exterior facade, as viewed from the parking lot directly out in front of the building. I quite like the way the light falls in this pic... looks as if the sun, in addition to figuratively, was literally setting on the Southaven Gap FactoryStore.
As I mentioned at the start of this album, not all is lost here, for there is another Gap FactoryStore still in operation just down the road at Tanger Outlets. But I definitely liked this store's location, selection, atmosphere, and crowds better... so it will be missed.
NEXT WEEK – officially kicking off summer 2018 uploads! But in advance of that, be sure to stay tuned for tomorrow as well: the Target Sunday Summer Spectacular will be celebrating its own 2018 kickoff...

The new Indian census(2011), which put the population at 1.2 billion, has revealed an alarming trend. Rising incomes only seem to accelerate gendercide – the evocative term for the selective abortion of girl foetuses. There were 945 girls per 1,000 boys in the 1991 census, 927 in 2001 and now 914. It's now a crisis and we need to move beyond just acknowledging the issue. The PC & PNDT Act 1994 prohibits any form of sex-determination practise and sex-selective abortion.
According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) of India; 89,546 cases of cruelty by husband and relatives; 21,397 cases of rape; 11,009 cases of sexual harassment and 5,650 cases of dowry harassment were reported in India during the year 2009.

There’s not much to this week’s teaser photo… simply another exterior shot of the now-former Southaven Gap FactoryStore, which of course is where we’re headed this Saturday. This was taken on January 11th, 2018, on what I thought would be my final visit to the store. Turns out, it wasn’t – so stay tuned for my photos from both the 11th and my final visit in the coming weeks…
I quite liked how this shot turned out, especially with the sky at dusk and the reflections of the store's lights on the wet road below! And yes, I am indeed just sticking this week's music recommendations over normal sentences. I've run out of ways to keep introducing them every week, and decided just to be lazy tonight. :P

It looked as if yesterday's sunset was going to be pretty spectacular, so I wandered off to Sandy Gap on Walney to bag a few shots; it didn't turn out to be as majestic as I'd hoped, but I snapped away regardless - this is arguably the best of a fairly average bunch - enjoy anyway!

Minimizing gaps is a huge challenge when building a ship with so many non standard angles connecting to each other. I think I did a good job here where the nose meets the side panels... and where the side panels sit over the closed wings...

Zoe Bear had two of her bottom incisors removed yesterday because they were loose. While under, she also had her teeth cleaned. Aren't they nice and white now? She came out of anesthesia really well and was home in less than three hours. This shot was taken shortly after she got home. She is doing mostly fine except for a honking cough caused by irritation from the breathing tube. I'm hoping it'll go away soon.
