One of the Ring of Kerry's finest views, the Gap of Dunloe. This one was taken during a lull in torrential rainfall ;) If you look closely near the middle of the image, you can see two lovely brown horses :) A horse also casually strolled by (unattended!) while I was snapping away :) No doubt it was enjoying the scenery as much as I was!
Wikipedia says: "The Gap of Dunloe (from Irish: Dún Lóich, meaning "Lóich's stronghold", otherwise known as Bearna an Choimín meaning "gap of the common-land") is a narrow mountain pass between Macgillycuddy's Reeks (west) and Purple Mountain (east) in County Kerry, Ireland. It is about 11 km (7 miles) from north to south. Within it are five lakes: Coosaun Lough, Black Lake, Cushnavally Lake, Auger Lake, and Black Lough (north to south). These lakes are connected by the River Loe. Between the first two lakes is an old arch bridge called the 'Wishing Bridge' so named because it is said that wishes made while upon it are destined to come true."

This is the Fishers Gap Overlook along Skyline Drive. We park here whenever we walk down the Rose River Fire Road.
On Saturday morning, the four-day's worth of stormy weather was finally moving off. The changing weather made for dramatic sky conditions along Skyline Drive. The ridge of mountains you can see peeking out at the very top of the shot is over in West Virginia.
There are a lot of places along Skyline Drive where there is no place to pull over. I'm convinced that they built the overlooks at all the wrong places. When Adam and I are out, I often have him drop me off somewhere along the road. He comes back about 15 minutes later to collect me after I'm done taking photos.
This particular Saturday, he dropped me off. I got out all my gear, set up my tripod, got out my circular polarizer, my GND filter, my shutter release, etc, etc, etc. Basically, everything in my bag was laid out on my rain fly. I was just setting up my first shot when I see Adam tearing back down the road. He rolled down the window and shouted "Get in the car, there's a bear about 100 yards down the road." I quickly and messily packed all my gear, swapped to my telephoto and got to the bear's location just as he waddled over the crest of the hill down into the woods. Oh well... I think the clouds on this morning are just as cool as any bear.

The new Indian census(2011), which put the population at 1.2 billion, has revealed an alarming trend. Rising incomes only seem to accelerate gendercide – the evocative term for the selective abortion of girl foetuses. There were 945 girls per 1,000 boys in the 1991 census, 927 in 2001 and now 914. It's now a crisis and we need to move beyond just acknowledging the issue. The PC & PNDT Act 1994 prohibits any form of sex-determination practise and sex-selective abortion.
According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) of India; 89,546 cases of cruelty by husband and relatives; 21,397 cases of rape; 11,009 cases of sexual harassment and 5,650 cases of dowry harassment were reported in India during the year 2009.

Went out for the day with Lisa and ended up at Sycamore Gap, conditions were bad at first, peeing down with rain, but then they changed and the sun came out and gave some lovely light and clouds.

The High Sierra Trail crosses alpine terrain near Kaweah Gap
I have been reviewing my older archives of raw files recently, partly because it simply is important to do so from time to time, and partly because I'm between locations and looking for additional images to work on. Any time I go back through the older files I find things that are interesting, and occasionally I even find some excellent photographs that I overlooked the first time around.
This photograph comes from 2008. To me it seems more interesting as a record of a particular place and a particular event than on a purely photographic basis. (I could have wished for a more interesting sky!) This was my second crossing of the High Sierra Trail, which we followed from the west side of Sequoia National Park, across the entire range, to the summit of Mount Whitney, and then down to Whitney Portal. On this trip I traveled with a group of long-time backcountry friends... unlike the first time I did this trip perhaps 25 years earlier, when I did it with my wife. I made this photograph from the top of Kaweah Gap, the pass through the Great Western Divide before dropping into Big Arroyo. The photograph looks back to the west, across the trail we had ascended to reach this point.
