Legacy Racers Class Overview
The Legacy Racers category at the HSR Classic 6 Hour at Watkins Glen brings together some of the most historically significant GT, prototype, and touring‑car machinery spanning multiple eras of sports car racing. These groups showcase authentic period‑correct race cars, each representing the engineering philosophies, performance envelopes, and competitive identities of their respective decades. The class blends iconic American muscle, European GT legends, and early‑generation prototype platforms into a single, heritage‑rich racing environment.
Group 5A – Historic Prototypes, Sedans & GTs
Group 5A features a diverse field of production‑based GT cars, early sports prototypes, and classic American sedans. Cars in HP1–HP4 include everything from the 1966 Shelby GT350 to Porsche 911 S/Ts, 914/6 GTs, and Morgan Plus 4 entries. These vehicles represent the golden age of analog racing — lightweight chassis, mechanical grip, and naturally aspirated engines that reward driver finesse. The Porsche 911 S/T contingent is especially strong, with multiple entries from 1967–1972, alongside standout machines like the 1970 Chevron B16 and the 1968 Corvette C3 roadster.
Group 8 – Post‑Historic FIA / IMSA / ALMS / SCCA GTs
Group 8 steps into the late‑1970s through mid‑1990s era of GT racing, where tube‑frame construction, aero development, and higher‑output engines became the norm. Cars such as the 1990 Chevrolet Corvette GT1 and the 1995 BMW E36/M3 Lightweight represent the transition from classic GT racing into the modern era. These machines bridge the gap between vintage and contemporary performance, offering higher cornering speeds, improved braking, and more advanced suspension geometry while still retaining the raw, mechanical character of their predecessors.
Group 11 – Modern GT & Touring Cars (TCR, GT3E, MP1/MP2)
Group 11 brings the most modern machinery within the Legacy Racers umbrella. This includes TCR‑spec front‑wheel‑drive touring cars, GT3E‑class Porsche 996 GT3 Cup cars, and MP1/MP2 entries such as the BMW M2 CS and Ford Mustang Boss 302. These cars feature modern aerodynamics, sequential gearboxes, advanced braking systems, and contemporary safety structures. They provide a dramatic contrast to the earlier groups, showcasing how GT and touring‑car engineering has evolved into the 21st century.
A Unified Heritage Showcase
Together, Groups 5A, 8, and 11 create a multi‑era racing showcase that highlights the evolution of sports car competition from the 1960s through the 2020s. The Legacy Racers class is a cornerstone of the HSR Classic 6 Hour, offering fans and photographers a rare opportunity to see historically significant race cars driven at speed on one of North America’s most iconic circuits.
