The sun was sinking low in the western sky by this time, ducking behind the dunes on the leeward side. We only caught it as it ducked through gaps in the dune.
Today's hike was up Ross Gap Trail, a spur that meets the Cumberland Trail at the summit. It is a long haul, very strenuous, straight up in places, up to the "dirt road" at the top.
Ross Gap, Bird Mountain Segment, is 7.9 miles long, but I only accomplished about 1.5 miles of it (one way). The trek down is almost as taxing, especially with snow and ice in places. Rocks and roots are another hazard!
