So, as many of you family and friends know, I spent Christmas passing a kidney stone. This beautiful little baby was born Christmas morning at 10:45am, much to my relief, and Sean's.
I started passing the stone Thursday morning at 5:30am. I spent Thursday from 8am to Friday at 10am in the hospital while this guy bumped its way from my kidney to my bladder, clogging up the works quite nicely in the process. It took the next couple of days to leisurely make it from my bladder out into the world.
I suppose you are asking yourself, "Why is Steph posting this? It is seriously disgusting looking. And why such a high magnification?"
Well, I'll hit question two. Why such a high magnification? Because I can do it. I'm at work and I'm taking pictures of ant holotypes and paratypes with our microptics system. On my lunch break, I decided to put it under there to see what it looked like and figured I might as well save the results.
Why did I post it? I don't know. I do know why I took it. I have to take it back to the doctors so that they can analyze it to figure out how many foods I need to cross off my "can eat" list. I have a feeling that's the last I'll see of it. It took 77 very painful hours to pass this thing and unknown hours for my body to make it. It's personal.
I feel very conflicted about this object. In one sense, I want to HULK SMASH it and then rampage through the streets in a (remembered) pain-induced rage. On the other hand, I made this! It seriously bounces off the counter like a pebble. MY BODY MADE A FREAKING ROCK. I guess in some way, I'm impressed that my body decided go and do this without any input from my conscious brain. It went rogue and made a freaking rock.
In fact, this isn't even the first time my body has decided to do this! My body made a bunch of kidney stones back in the late 80's - early 90's. I guess it got bored after awhile and stopped. In 2009, it picked the hobby back up, but decided to expand its art to gallstones. I'm not sure it would have stopped without intervention, but I'll never know. I took the gallbladder away from it. Now, it's decided to revisit the art of making kidney stones. Sadly, I can't take my kidneys away from it without some serious consequences. Are there other types of body stones? If so, don't tell my body. I don't want it to get any other bright ideas.
Anyway. If I lose it, this picture is what I've got left.

In Yin Yoga, following the Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Wood Element in the body is the one which rules the emotions of Anger and Kindness. Its two meridians are the Liver (yin, passive), and the Gallbladder (yang, active). The Metal Element in the body is the one which governs Grief and Loss, on one side, and Courage, on the Other. The Courage to Let Go. Letting go, then, asks for courage, but it is the only thing you can go when you are in a grief. Here, Metal and Wood are touching, connected, and it wasn't even wanted: I realized it only when posting the photo. They touch, they Kiss, and I am floundered, my heart sinks, stops being strong, and sinks, unhinged. Unhindered. I've learnt so much the past few weeks. Anger is not the same thing that Rage. (Rage is an emotion governed by the Fire Element in the body, according to TCM. Rage, on one side, and Love or Joy, are the emotions related to Fire in the body, Fire on the Soul.) Rage is the thing that burns you, that flares up in you and overpowers everything, whenever you learn that something unfair happened. Rage is necessary, it is the expression of our moral instinct, or our moral compass. Without rage, we would never fight against injustice. Anger, on the other side, corresponds only to this stupid habit, that too many of us acquire, to nag at everything, and retaliate: of being irritable, for no reason: working out our frustrations by working them OUTside, instead of stopping for a second and assessing what is it that is wrong, and taking the time to fix it, before we return to the activities. Anger is something that can poison our relationships, our way of relating to others. It is something to avoid. It is the opposite of kindness: kindness is what we have to cultivate, in each and every way. Kindness to ourselves, and to others. To be kind to our selves and others is the aim. Anger is only habit, and a bad habit, a mere habit, in the end. Rage, on the other hand, is totally necessary: it is the other side of passion: it is the passion for upsurging that upsurges in us whenever we witness injustice, unhappiness, bad treatments, violence, etc. Rage gets us somewhere, because, without it, we would not move ourselves to change the world. Anger, on the other hand, only gets in our way, is an obstacle, a constant obstacle, in our way, if one doesn't get rid of it.
All of these elements are conjuncting on my table, coming together, unwantedly, forcing me -or at least giving me the occasion- to bring forth everything on this I've learnt this past weeks.

I thank my Courage in the Overcoming of Grief.
I thank my kindness, towards myself, and my capacity to let go. The courage that has allowed me to be able to let go.

My right side had been hurting for a few days. I'd gone to a gastroenterologist who'd told me he thought it was my gallbladder. He ordered an ultrasound, an endoscopy, and about a week's worth of stool samples, which was a nightmare. I was VERY psyched when I learned that you could still drink with gallstones.
These were just the bruises that popped out right away ... by the end of my stay my arms were pretty much full on black and blue. All due to blood being drawn ... poorly. O_o

Well, I got this spectacular idea. "Todd, take a picture of my scar, making it look crazy long, like stretching all the way across my belly."
(I forget this isn't actually too far from the truth, but I want to take a picture that maybe... starts to embrace this new part of myself.)
He's somewhat confused, but obliges with my odd request. I said, "Make it look awesome and bad-ass."
Then, I'm sitting here with this photo on my screen, trying to play with it in Photoshop... trying my damnedest to figure out what to do to this photo to glamorize it, make it look awesome/bad-ass/whatever...
I mess with the colors in it a little bit, since we have a red/blue/green/yellow lamp in here that messes with the color in everything... but other than that, what was I going to do? Use the bandage tool to remove the scar?
No. I guess not. That would kind of defeat the purpose, wouldn't it?
So, it may seem trivial to some of you, but I have to accept this as part of me, for better or for worse, I am going to have this foot long (or more, I've never actually measured) scar on my abdomen.
It's my battle scar. Hopefully one day it will all be worth it, when this battle is actually fucking won.
