Prickly letuce Asteraceae (Sunflower family)
Prickly lettuce is a biennial or winter annual, from a large taproot, with milky juice, reproducing only by seeds. Leaves alternate, twisted at the with a prickly spine on the backside, making them painful to pull without gloves. Flowers are yellow.
Prickly lettuce is a native of Europe, but now firmly established almost everywhere in North America. This weed is a serious invader in disturbed soil of irrigated crops and orchards.
