The delightful Leicestershire village of Ashby Magna was once lit by a number of quaint tungsten lamped lanterns mounted beneath wonderfully ornate semi-circular brackets attached to roadside wood poles. Sadly, over the years these little rural lanterns have been replaced with characterless plastic modern affairs (as above).
To attach the dreadful modern side-entry fittings, the original brackets have been butchered to accommodate the replacements. This sort of thing has happened all over the country in the last 20 years or so, which impacts on local heritage, bringing city style blandness to these rural backwaters.
The last of the old tungsten lanterns on the original brackets disappeared about 12-months ago, but thanks to the Clerk of the Parish Council, the complete fitting is now safely saved to my collection.

The Players
Some pictures taken at the DC Loves Dilla - 9th Annual Tribute and Fundraiser Concert held at the Howard Theatre in Washington, DC on Thusday, July 17, 2014 by Mary Nichols (DJ Fusion of the syndicated FuseBox Radio Broadcast).
James “J Dilla” Yancey was a GRAMMY award-winning producer who inspired millions with his music including artist like Common, Raekwon, Erykah Badu, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, and many many more. On February 10, 2006 just three days after his 32nd birthday, J Dilla passed away after a long time of suffering with Lupus.
Cultural Curator Munch Joseph and HedRush Music created the DC Loves Dilla movement as a way to celebrate J Dilla and honor his career works. "Carrying on the musical legacy of J Dilla for the 9th year and counting is something HedRush and myself look forward to. Personally, it's my way of paying homage to a great creator as well as doing our part to continually add balance to urban music. Dilla's music accomplishes that on many levels," says Munch Joseph when asked the motivation behind the Tribute Concert ad Fundraiser.

Old-ish houses have their quirks. The overhead light in the bedroom will decide, sometimes for a few hours, other times for a couple of weeks, to not come on. No amount of fusebox jiggling or switch-flipping or bulb changing will coax it prematurely back to illumination. It's a condition that would likely be remedied with a call to a trustworthy electrician, but why bother when you know it will eventually come on again.

Craigend Brickworks Ltd. was founded by William Wilson in 1937 on the site of Whiterigg and Craigend Collieries (Carron Company) at Craigend, Falkirk. It closed in 1943 due to lack of demand for bricks, but re-opened after the war. In 1964 the pit blae supply was exhausted and the works concentrated on making refractories. The name changed to Craigend Refractories Ltd. in February 1972. When it closed in October 1982 it was Scotlands last fireclay mine.
Coalbed Methane Ltd. took over the site in the mid 1990s, intending to extract methane from a coal bed beneath the brickworks, however they went out of business before any work was carried out.
Cary is living proof, you can be anything you want. It all starts with a dream and the faith that God will get you to where you need to be to attain those dreams. Never stop dreaming and ALWAYS dream BIG!

Built between 1898 and 1930 as a sanatorium for lung diseases, Beelitz-Heilstätten was one of the largest hospitals in and around Berlin. It served as a field hospital in the two world wars and was later the Soviets' major military hospital in East Germany. Abandoned in 1994 with the Russian withdrawal, most buildings have slowly fallen into ruins since. What a shame.
