The weather turned rather foul as we climbed up to the Summit of Stromboli. Strong wind and rain, so it wasn't practical to hang around for to long.
Fumed Silica Coating. A method to improve quality of Iron prints.
Fumed silica is made of nanoparticles of silica, which make a superficial sizing of the paper. It enhances deepness of shadows, improves fine tuning of highlights, so extending tonal scale and overall contrast, while increasing sharpness.
Easy to use, can be applied with some different methods. I find this one the better being easy and effective. Here it is shown with a pure palladium print, but iron printing with a preeminent dry down effect (vanDyke, Kallitype, Cyanotype) display the most dramatic effect.
Pure palladium print: 24 drops Pd, 24 drops Iron(III)Oxalate + 1 drop Na2
Hanhemühle platinum rag paper, preheated with fumed silica
15 minutes exposure, development in Sodium Acetate. Three clearing baths (EDTA II, Na Sulphite, EDTA IV) and final washing
