I've met a few strangers today, most of them were Californians visiting Portland, as was Sarah here :-)

Sarah, 23 y/o, was born in Pasadena, California.

"I grew up there till about ten and then lived in Arizona for 11 years, then moved back to Los Angeles due to family.

I went to school for aesthetics. I currently work at a barber shop called 'The Executive Cut and Shave' as a receptionist.

I'm going to be attending school again to be a cosmetologist and barber.

My hobby is swing dancing. I have been dancing since I was 12, I do a little bit of everything but mostly swing, Lindy hop, and Charleston.

I go to mostly social dancing events, but will join a friend of mine that's been dancing for a year to his private lessons to help assist while he is learning. I love helping him out with learning and seeing his enthusiasm towards dancing."

"What is your message, a word of advice to the world, Sarah? Anything you would like to share?"

"My advice is to love someone as much as you can before they are gone and to never stay mad. The love of my life, Brandon, passed away back in February of 2014. My biggest regret was that the last time I spoke and saw him, a couple of days before he passed in a car accident, I had been mad at him.

He had a very beautiful free soul. I'm sure he is doing great wherever he is and knows I love and miss him very much, even though I didn't let him know that the last time I saw him."

"What is your struggle/ challenge right now, Sarah?"

"I have a son, Dash Anakin, I love him very much. He is one and a half y/o. I was a fulltime mother up until about a couple of months ago. I then asked his father if he could take care of our son fulltime for a little bit so I could get back on my feet and live on my own--since I had moved to California and was staying with family. He said yes, but took off to Illinois, where he's from, with my son.

The father of my child is a great dad, but unfortunately he is not the kindest person to me.

I have trouble believing I'm a good mother with the situation I've been put in. I'm taking advantage to build my career and be more financially stable so I will be able to have my son fulltime again though. I will do anything to have my son back and provide for him. He's my little man!"

"What advice would you give the younger you, Sarah?"

"I think I would tell the younger me to not pay attention to what everyone has to say about me. It took a while for me to get over that so I could love myself. Also I would have told myself to have not isolated myself so much. I get a lot of social anxiety and sometimes have a hard time getting over it in some situations whether it be with people I know or don't know due to spending so much time alone growing up.

It's funny because I realise I can look really intimidating, but I'm probably more intimated by everyone else. I can be completely fine one day and the next I can be completely closed off to the world.

I feel like going social dancing helps that anxiety sometimes. I hope to fully get over this problem."

BTW, Sarah's chest tattoo says: "one of these days you will learn to love again". It's lyrics from a song called 'Life and Death' by 'The Dear Hunter'.

Thank you so much, Sarah, for being so open, friendly and kind. I wish you to have the strength to overcome the difficulties in your life right now and get your son back.

Sarah thanked me in an email:

"Thank you for the experience! The pictures are great and my hair looks so blue 💙

I checked out your photo blog. I really enjoyed looking at all the pictures and reading what you had to say about every picture. I bet you are learning a lot about the Portland culture which is really awesome!"

Here is an update on today’s before and afters.

- I loved how the eyebrow threading cleaned up my bushy mess. Perfect timing for New Years Eve.

- I finally introduced Stephanie to our warehouse manager Karen and she was so sweet to me. (Destiny was out today)

I can’t believe how normal and natural our conversation was after I came down to earth from Karen’s comments. She barley recognized me until I opened my mouth. I’m going blog all about this tomorrow on www.stillverytrans.com

What a liberating day. ☮️💜

I finished college in 1981 and had my first fulltime job. I taught as an elementary school teacher in Kuwait that fall. I went with a classmate from home and new friends who were new hires too. It was the first time we'd been overseas. The world seems like a much different place.

These images are rough due to the age of the photographs. Over time, I may do a bit of editing on these.

An assortment of cookies I made for one of my daughter's daycare teachers who is leaving to go back to school fulltime. Didn't really have a theme to work with so I came up with the phrase and designed around it.

Deforestation

Collage

160 X 110 cms

Every photo is cut out of National Geographic magazines and glued down onto collaging board.

This collage took me around 4 months of fulltime work…

I am raising funds for a Borneo based charity called HUTAN. I have so far raised more than 2,000€ (2010-2011)through poster sales. Please go to www.hutan.org.my

Amongst the details in this collage you can find:

A herd of cows grazing on a newly deforested region of Brazil’s Amazon basin. Fast food restaurants in the U.S.A. including McDonald’s buy this meat, even though they deny any involvement in deforestation.

To the right, there is a huge area being cleared for growing Soya beans. This crop is then distributed worldwide mainly as animal feed.

Towards the lower centre one can find an illegal farmer, busy planting palms for the palm oil trade. A number of animals are trying to dissuade him: a mouse with a STOP sign, a monkey dropping a large stone on his hand, whilst a giant gerbil is about to give him the fright of his life. Palm oil ends up in a wide variety of products, from fast foods, chocolate and soap to cosmetics and even cleaning products.

Most of the animals in this collage have taken up arms in a desperate attempt to save their ever-shrinking habitat. You can find:

A snow monkey armed with a rifle and cannon.

A grasshopper mouse (shouting orders) equipped with a decorative dagger.

A tiny poison arrow frog wearing a helmet, armed with a silver plated pistol.

A lemur handing over an M-16 assault rifle to a giant kangaroo rat.

A team of meerkats moving a heavy machine-gun into position.

A grizzly bear sniper.

A tortoise complete with crash helmet and a delivery of grenades.

A trio of chimpanzees are launching grenades at a lumberjack about 3 metres away. If you look really closely you can even see their selection of rocket-propelled grenades and launcher!

A clan of prairie dogs are awarding a veteran fighter with a medal, whilst to the left a Philippine tarsier is suffering from shell shock.

A mouse can be seen whispering death threats into the ear of a lumberjack, but he’s closed his eyes and put earplugs in…what a coward!

Elsewhere, some naughty proboscis monkeys are tying a lumberjack’s legs together.

A wild cat is about to shred a logger’s hand to ribbons and a man carrying a large tree trunk is being attacked by a mouse, 2 prairie puppies and a squirrel.

Sadly, a lot of the animals are under threat from exploitation. Here is a list of some of the endangered species I have included in the collage. You can find:

Brown howler monkey (population declining)

Buffy tufted-ear marmoset (vunerable, less than 10 000 individuals)

Burrowing bettong (population 5 000 and rising)

Crowned lemur (vunerable, declining population)

Gee’s golden langur (endangered, less than 3 000 individuals)

Giant kangaroo rat (endangered, population unknown)

Golden crowned sifaka lemur (critically endangered, 6 000-10 000 individuals)

Golden headed lion tamarin (endangered, less than 2 000 individuals)

Hispaniolan solenodon (critically endangered)

Kinkajou (population declining but not threatened)

Malagasay civet (vunerable but unknown population)

Margay cat (population declining)

Pileated gibbon (vunerable, 30 000 and declining)

Philippine tarsier (rare but population unknown)

Proboscis monkey (endangered, less than 1000 individuals)

Rabbit-eared bandicoot (vunerable, less than 10 000 individuals)

Red ruffed lemur (endangered but unknown population)

Slender loris (population declining)

Sokoke scops owl (vunerable, less than 1,000 pairs)

Spectacled bear (vunerable, 5 000-30 000 individuals)

Sumatran rhinoceros (endangered, estimated at 400 individuals)

Western barred bandicoot (vunerable, less than 10 000 individuals)

SCREENING PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM: TSA Can Benefit from Improved Cost Estimates

Note: TSA classifies commercial airports in the United States into one of five security risk categories (X, I, II, III, and IV) based on various factors, such as the total number of takeoffs and landings annually, and other special security considerations. In general, category X airports have the largest number of passenger boardings, and category IV airports have the smallest.

Lately I've been working fulltime in an achitecture project for university (finally finished it), and haven't had much time for photography. So, here's an architecture shot I took in Paris early this year.

"Il bello delle donne" is sort of an idiomatic expression meaning something like 'the nice side of being a woman', which complies very well with a female's hairdresser's sign, let us say.

Though the literal translation shoud be something more like 'a handsome man for ALL women'. Yeah, the attractive guy ANY woman wants.....a bit confused, i know but....aren't they handsome? ;-)

Today is my 53rd birthday, and I'm celebrating it alone, in the shadow of my father-in-law's admittance yesterday to a fulltime facility for Alzheimer's patients. He'll be there until the day he dies, existing as a ghost of his former self, there but not. I'm very sad.

Bill's long, blue goodbye has me ruminating on my own mortality, my own life, and the experiences that have shaped who I am. They remind me that life is the story we tell ourselves about ourselves.

With that in mind, and with your indulgence, I would like to tell you a story from when I was a teen-ager living in Ohio, a story I'm calling The Face in the Window.

To be continued...

To me this looks like a very large monstrance, ostensorium (or an ostensory) … the vessel used in Roman Catholic, Old Catholic and Anglican churches for the more convenient exhibition of some object of piety, such as the consecrated Eucharistic host during Eucharistic adoration or Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. It is also used as reliquary monstrance for the public display of relics of some saints.

Some accounts describe this metal sculpture by John Coll as depicting a seagull, a ship and the sun. The sun may be correct but it is definitely not a seagull [my best guess is that it is a cormorant] and I am not sure that a Galway Hooker is classified as a ship.

John Coll, originally from Taylor’s Hill Galway and now living in Dublin. After an initial career as a marine biologist John Coll turned to his passion for making sculpture fulltime 30 years ago. Since then he has become one of the best known figurative sculptors with many public works such as the monument to Patrick Kavanagh on the Grand Canal at Baggot Street, Dublin and his celebration in bronze of Brendan Behan on the Royal Canal in Drumcrondra, Dublin. Other large-scale works include a life-size portrait of the racehorse "Bobbyjo" and a 4-meter monument to Countess Markievicz at Rathcormac, Co Sligo. His most recent commission is a 4.5-meter sculpture of the Galway footballer legend Enda Colleran for his hometown of Moylough, Co Galway.

While freelancing fulltime, I had a contract on the 20something'th floors of the PPG Building. It afforded fantastic views of the city.

U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich tours the Hampton Farms Peanut Company facility in Portales. He met with the family-owned company's staff, toured the facility, and discussed ways to expand businesses in eastern New Mexico with local officials to help grow the economy and create jobs. The facility in Portales employs 125 fulltime and seasonal workers throughout the year and allows Hampton Farms to serve the Western United States.
