infrared, various treatments

the background is black fabric

A good couple of weeks ago I made a huge focus blunder on the second IR safari this year (I did almost nothing last year 😲), which rendered all my panos of the day useless. No bueno!

But weirdly enough, this kicked off an unexpected infrared frenzy, sort of an attempt to get revenge, which in fact I did get, even on that particular location (it requires a number conditions to be in place, so that was not a given!).

But since the weather was really good, I started a whole bunch of IR safaris that were quite productive, and this is from the first one after my failure which had a bit of a kamikaze flavour, just straight up the mountain. 😤 It was the last pano of the day, mid afternoon, before returning to my car and as you can tell, perhaps, that's a really steep meadow but it turned out pretty decent I think, with the view and clouds, nice shadows, sweet flare and all. 😊

Sometimes I wonder, that it probably would not take much for us (humans) to see in infrared like that. That would be cool, don't you think? I mean the near IR spectrum is bordering and overlapping the visible range, perhaps just a few tweaks to our eyes and we could see a bit longer in wavelength.

And then the experience, "the colors" we now perceive are made up in our brains anyway, it's a social convention to some extend, physically out there is just the vast electromagnetic spectrum. Well essentially, everything we think and talk about, is an abstraction, an interpretation, and not an / the absolute thing. Anyway! If you could see in infrared, how would you wish your visual perception would be? Would you choose some fancy false-color perception, like my and the photos of others? Or some monochrome vision?

However, sorry for the philosophical digression, I hope you enjoy the panorama; take care, be kind. 💚

The source of this is a 360° pano consisting of 42 photos, with a mercator projection yielding 27203 x 15806px, ~430MP, which I did a 8:5 crop on with 16690 x 10431px, ~174,1MP.

This thing was more of a rushed experiment one could say, due to popular demand and opportunity.

Since the hotspot issue resolved itself with the fullspec D3300, I find myself doing a lot of single row panoramas with the Tamron, which now appears more versatile than ever. Not just the focal range (24mm-13mm), but also ease of focus (different wavelength and focal length) and cooperation with the pano head. 13mm is wide!, but being the greedy bastard I am, I caught myself wanting even more on occasion, so I started to experiment with the 10mm end (I used to refrain from due the distortion) and how it might perform doing panoramas with.

So I was taking pictures in the opposite direction, as I noticed that this mega cloud attempted to reach for the sun, literally (and it did eventually!). I turned around, could not fit it all in and said, f*** it, I'm going 10mm and tilt it up as well, straight into the blazing sun, not giving a hoot.

As you can see at the many 'pearl strings' (ghosting), the overlap was huge, on purpose, way more than necessary so I can work it on the computer. I only had time to do 510nm, so I performed my 'digital Aerochrome' development, it was ok, but well.., so I played around with b&w conversions (for the record: I did brighten up the red, magenta, purple, to fake a light Wood Effect that's not really there at that wavelength, the image would not have worked other-wise) and I happen to like this gritty dark version. Why not?

Conclusion: 10mm kinda works, panoramically, the center is not too bad (even with half the images taken / used), the rim has some fuzz going but not a deal-breaker without too much crop. Still amazed how controlled the flare is, ..like what? And it was pretty in the color version (same as the foliage mostly) and I could beautify it due to the huge overlap.

It's not bad at all, yet the full extent, how freakin' high this pano reaches into the sky is a bit lost nonetheless I feel. Will I do this setup (10mm) again if it's indicated? Yes, I think so. Would have been interesting to be able to compare it to a 24mm 3 row layout in this situation though.

Okay, what the heck, why not go retro/vintage with this one?! Even though I got a rather nice classic b&w development as well. 😭

I'm struggling a bit lately, with the b&w stuff. Nowadays I always do at least one false-color development, even e.g. when the light's no good and it's clear that I will go monochrome.

I feel, having a color image finished and then convert it gives me way more options than developing the source photos b&w before stitching. Almost too much! The infrared spectrum plus this high resolution panorama thing I'm doing provide a ton of contrast and details to the point where it's super easy to lose track and make images plain unnatural, kind of hyperactive or clinical devoid of mood, that is not really pleasant to look at.

I don't want to complain about too much possibilities though, it's good in a way cause it forces me to really think about what I like and what constitudes a "good" b&w image when there are plenty of means to go overboard and make it look "not good".

The original of this panorama consists of 30 individual photos and a trimmed equirectangular projection yielded a resolution of 20643 x 10819px ~223,3MP, which I then cropped to 8:5 aspect ratio and 15438 x 9649px ~149MP.

So, I think this will be the first of one of the "lost gorge series", the one that has been flooded and where I did a IR safari with the VR (Tamrons name for optical image stabilization) on + tripod.

Not sure why it sometimes kicked in and made everything blurry, and sometimes not. Any guesses?

I'm pleased with this one, and it's an uncommon development for this setup. The fern on the opposite side of the creek is scarce in this area, very thin and delicate, like feathers poking out of the ground, one can't even tell if they are waving in the breeze or just being thin.

Also surprised that I managed to not blow out the highlights, the trees and bushes are bathed in sunlight, abundantly distributing these lovely IR rays, the stream and myself were in the shadow.

Really peaceful actually, very quite, only the gentle sound of the water and above all, no people.

Source for this is a ~278,8MP mercator projection, consisting of 27 individual photos, cropped to 14765px² with 218MP. Due to the ² format and Flickr's 'best display size', this lends itself to zooming in. I recommend it.

These are some of the first images taken whilst testing out a newly converted full-spectrum Lumix GX1. These were taken with a 590nm Infrared filter on the lens. They were R-B channel swapped in CS6 then processed in LR5.

Perfect conditions for infrared photography that day; bright afternoon sun, nice shadows, vegetation still in full bloom, interesting clouds but not much wind, in short: summer end of July.
