Manhattan is one of the boroughs of New York City. Located primarily on Manhattan Island at the mouth of the Hudson River, the boundaries of the borough are identical to those of New York County, an original county of the state of New York. It consists of Manhattan Island and several small adjacent islands: Roosevelt Island, Randall's Island, Ward's Island, Governors Island, Liberty Island, part of Ellis Island, and U Thant Island; as well as Marble Hill, a small section on the mainland near the Bronx. The original city of New York began at the southern end of Manhattan, and expanded in 1898 to include surrounding counties. It is the smallest yet most urbanized of the five boroughs.
The County of New York is the most densely populated county in the United States, and one of the most densely populated areas in the world, with a 2008 population of 1,634,795 living in a land area of 22.96 square miles (59.47 km²), or 71,201 residents per square mile (27,485/km²). It is also one of the wealthiest counties in the United States, with a 2005 personal income per capita above $100,000.[3] Manhattan is the third-largest of New York's five boroughs in population.

Marostica (Venetian language: Maròstega), is a town and comune in the province of Vicenza, Veneto, northern Italy. It is mostly famous for its living chess event and for the local cherry variety.
The name of the city can be traced back to the Venetic (Adriatic Veneti) language and recalls the hills (mar/maros) and the several streams of water (rost) coming down from the adjacent mountains and the verb "to have" in Venetic language (ga). Hence the name means "that has mountains and hills". Several Venetic findings have been discovered, dating back to the first millennium B.C. When the Adriatic Veneti federated with the Romans, they slowly abandoned their alphabet (Venetic) to use the Latin one.
The spoken language evolved and merged with the Gallo-Iberian branch of Romance languages to form the modern-day Venetian Language (of which there are a number of branches, including Padovano, Veneziano, Veronese, Feltrino, and so on). The Venetian Language is still widely used throughout the region.
Between the 11th and 13th centuries, the locality was greatly influenced by several members of the important medieval family from the Veneto, known as the Ezzelini it:Ezzelini. They were finally defeated in 1260. Marostica was a Venetian city until the Italian invasion which caused a diaspora and cultural ethnocide of the population of the area, who was forced to look for fortune in Brasil and many other places in the world.
Marostica is famous all over the world for the human chess game it carries out every other year, with personages living in the city public square. Starting in the second week of September, it is a theatrical play dating back to in 1923and officially registered after second world war by comedy player Vucetich.

The GE Building is an Art Deco skyscraper that forms the centerpiece of Rockefeller Center in the midtown Manhattan section of New York City. Known as the RCA Building until 1988, it is most famous for housing the headquarters of the television network NBC. At 850 feet (259 m) tall, the 70-story building is the 9th tallest building in New York City and the 32nd tallest in the United States. Its address is 30 Rockefeller Plaza.
The building was completed in 1933 as part of the Rockefeller Center. The noted Art Deco architect Raymond Hood led a team of Rockefeller architects. It was named the RCA Building for its main tenant, the Radio Corporation of America, formed in 1919 by General Electric. It was the first building constructed with the elevators grouped in the central core. During construction, photographer Charles Clyde Ebbets took the famous photograph Lunchtime atop a Skyscraper. National Broadcasting Company, also owned by General Electric, leased space in the building.
The office of the Rockefeller family occupied Room 5600 on the 56th floor. This space is now occupied by Rockefeller Family & Associates, spanning between the 54th floor and the 56th floor of the building. In 1985, the building acquired official landmark status. The RCA Building was renamed as the GE Building in 1988, two years after General Electric re-acquired the RCA Corporation.

While most Americans are only just upgrading to FullHD/1080p (1920x1080), Sony is already rolling out the next resolution: 4k (a.k.a. 4096x2160) – for several years now, the state-of-the-art in movie theater projection.
In fact, for years already, NHK has been working on the step after that: Ultra High Definition TV: 8192x4320, or twice the linear resolution of 4k video. Put another way, UHDTV is 35 megapixels in a 1.9:1 aspect ratio. NHK is saying UHD is as far as we’ll ever need to go – that, at the closest practical viewing distance to the largest practical screen, 35 megapixels is all the human visual system can resolve.
UHDTV is still a long way off, though. NHK is projecting UHDTV broadcasts will commence in 2020. NHK was the first to broadcast HDTV, so they have some credibility in making that forecast. That first HDTV broadcast was in 1994, whereas I bought my first HDTV in 2009, and Blu-ray still hasn’t really hit the mainstream. So I figure maybe ten years at the earliest before early adopters get their hands on UHDTVs – but it could be twenty.
Assuming the NHK guys are right and UHD matches average human visual acuity at normal viewing distances, that still leaves the question of what camera would be needed to capture images that can take advantage of all that resolution. In order to answer that question, let’s first talk sensor formats.
For those unfamiliar with film format sizes, 35mm does not mean the same size for still cameras and movie cameras. While the film stock is the same size (the 35mm stills format was based on the already existing cinema standard), movie frames are oriented with their long side taking up the width, whereas for still frames it's their short side. In fact, Super 35 (the current Hollywood standard) is roughly the same size as APS-C. Stills 35mm standard (i.e., what the 5D Mark II uses) is about halfway in capture area between Super 35 and 70/65mm movie film, the latter of which is similar in size to medium format stills. IMAX is bigger still; the analogy is roughly 65mm is to IMAX what 645 is to 6x7.
Watching Blu-rays on my 52” 1080p TV, the difference in clarity between contemporary movies filmed on Super 35 and 65/70mm is obvious – just as the difference between APS-C and medium format digital is obvious. That’s really just contrast and “micro-contrast” differences I’m seeing there. As far as resolution goes, ask yourself who would buy an 8.8-megapixel (4k video) medium-format stills camera – 35 megapixels (8k video) sounds a lot more reasonable, right? (BTW, the medium-format Leaf Aptus-II 12 captures 80 megapixels.)
For almost a century now we’ve been more-or-less stuck on the 24-fps, 35mm standard for feature film production. There’s nothing magical or even much scientific about that standard; it was chosen to make the most of current technology – current to the 1920s, that is. We can do better now – the Phantom 65 can shoot 4k 65/70mm-format at 150 fps – and in a few years it should be possible to capture the same image at 8k, with a larger gamut, more dynamic range, and far less noise/grain than was ever possible with film. Those images can be displayed right now - at least on the one 8k TV shown at this year’s CES.
A state-of-the-art Sony F65 captures an image 24.7 x 13.1mm (i.e., Super 35). That is then projected onto screens up to nearly 30m wide – a ~1200x enlargement. Is reducing this to under 600x magnification by going to 65/70mm format too much to ask? Why is it in the stills world some people feel 35mm was never meant to be blown up larger than 8x10” (an 8.5x enlargement), and yet few people in the movie world remark about the audacity of blowing up a smaller-than-35mm image to 100 feet?
Forget stereo 3-D: if you want something more realistic, crank up that strobe-like 24fps and dial in the massive increases in clarity and definition that 65/70mm format and 8k display bring.

This time, the BIENNALIST is looking into the notion of uncertainty which is the main theme for Bienal de São Paulo this year titled INCERTEZA VIVA (Live Uncertainty).
The program of Bienal de São Paulo is focusing "on notions of “uncertainty” to reflect on the current conditions of life and the strategies offered by contemporary art to harbor or inhabit uncertainties"
BIENNALIST is an art format that responds and questions the themes of biennials with artworks. Thierry Geoffroy/COLONEL have since 1988 been on location testing the pertinence of the biennales. Instead of questioning the canvas, the pigment or the museum, the artist questions the staged art events and their motivations. The theme of each biennial is taken seriously and studied in order to contribute to the debate the biennales want to generate.

-----------------the 32nd Bienal de São Paulo concept and artists ---
Titled Incerteza viva (Live uncertainty), the 32nd Bienal de São Paulo means to reflect on the current conditions of life and the strategies offered by contemporary art to harbor or inhabit uncertainty. The exhibition, curated by Jochen Volz and the co-curators Gabi Ngcobo (South Africa), Júlia Rebouças (Brazil), Lars Bang Larsen (Denmark) and Sofía Olascoaga (Mexico), will be held from September 10 to December 11, 2016 at the Ciccillo Matarazzo Pavilion, featuring approximately 90 artists and collectives, 54 of which are announced below:
Alia Farid; Anawana Haloba; Bárbara Wagner; Bené Fonteles; Carla Filipe; Carolina Caycedo; Cecilia Bengolea; Charlotte Johannesson; Cristiano Lenhardt; Dineo Seshee Bopape; Ebony G. Patterson; Eduardo Navarro; Em’kal Eyongakpa; Erika Verzutti; Felipe Mujica; Francis Alÿs; Gabriel Abrantes; Gilvan Samico; Güneş Terkol; Heather Phillipson; Helen Sebidi; Henrik Olesen; Hito Steyerl; Iza Tarasewicz; Jorge Menna Barreto; José Antonio Suárez Londoño; José Bento; Kathy Barry; Koo Jeong A; Lais Myrrha; Lourdes Castro; Luke Willis Thompson; Mariana Castillo Deball; Michal Helfman; Misheck Masamvu; Nomeda & Gediminas Urbonas; OPAVIVARÁ!; Öyvind Fahlström; Park McArthur; Pia Lindman; Pierre Huyghe; Pilar Quinteros; Priscila Fernandes; Rachel Rose; Rikke Luther; Rita Ponce de León; Ruth Ewan; Sandra Kranich; Ursula Biemann; Víctor Grippo; Vídeo nas Aldeias; Vivian Caccuri; Wilma Martins; William Pope.L
The exhibition sets out to trace cosmological thinking, ambient and collective intelligence, and systemic and natural ecologies. “Art feeds off uncertainty, chance, improvisation, speculation and, at the same time, it attempts to count the uncountable and measure the immeasurable. It makes room for error, for doubt and risk—even for ghosts and the most profound misgivings, without evading or manipulating them,” says curator Jochen Volz. “In order for us to objectively confront the big questions of our time, such as global warming and its impact on our habitat, the extinction of species and the loss of biological and cultural diversity, economic and political instability, injustice in the distribution of the earth’s natural resources and global migration, perhaps it’s necessary to detach uncertainty from fear.”
As part of the research for the 32nd Bienal de São Paulo and inaugurating its public activities, four Study Days will be held between March and May of 2016, combining visits to cultural institutions and initiatives, local communities, ecological reserves, artists’ studios, and research centers with four conferences, open to the public and conducted by invited lecturers and professionals at the different locales where they are to take place:
Cuiabá, Mato Grosso, Brazi, one of the richest and most fragile biomes in the world, a land of depleted soil, of monoculture, of species vanished and knowledge forgotten, selected for a conference discussing extinction and preservation, abundance and drought; Santiago, Chile, for a conference focusing on cosmologies and the enmeshed relationships between art and science, myth and history from a present-day perspective; Accra, Ghana, a point of return for many slaves from Brazil, a locale of bonds and renewals, projections and collective dreams; and the Peruvian Amazon, where the objective is to work with education, connections between the human race and nature, and to address questions about what is natural and original.
To mark the cycle, a seminar will be held at the Bienal building in São Paulo in June, interlacing the themes and proposals developed during these collaborative investigations. Registers of the Study Days and the seminar in São Paulo will be published on the Bienal website and in a specific publication.
Seeking to actively participate in the continuous and collective construction of the Ibirapuera Park as a public space, the exhibition sees itself as an extension of the garden inside the pavilion. Conversely, numerous artistic projects will be commissioned for the park. The firm Álvaro Razuk Arquitetura has been invited to develop the exhibit’s architectural project and exhibition displays.

The piano is a musical instrument played by means of a keyboard. Widely used in Classical music for solo performances, ensemble use, chamber music, and accompaniment, the piano is also very popular as an aid to composing and rehearsal. Although not portable and often expensive, the piano's versatility and ubiquity have made it one of the world's most familiar musical instruments.
Pressing a key on the piano's keyboard causes a felt-covered hammer to strike steel strings. The hammers rebound, allowing the strings to continue vibrating at their resonant frequency. These vibrations are transmitted through a bridge to a sounding board that couples the acoustic energy to the air so that it can be heard as sound. When the key is released, a damper stops the string's vibration. See the article on Piano key frequencies for a picture of the piano keyboard and the location of middle-C. Pianos are percussion instruments. According to the Hornbostel-Sachs method of music classification, they are grouped with chordophones.
The word piano is a shortened form of the word pianoforte, which derives from the original Italian name for the instrument, clavicembalo [or gravicembalo] col piano e forte (literally harpsichord capable of playing at the normal level, or more strongly). The musical terms "piano" and "forte" are usually interpreted as "soft" and "loud", but this is not strictly what they mean in Italian. "piano" means here a plane or level, suggesting the normal level of playing. "Forte" would mean a stronger, more powerful level of playing, effectively louder than usual.
This refers to the instrument's responsiveness to keyboard touch, which allows the pianist to produce notes at different dynamic levels by controlling the speed with which the hammers hit the strings.

Taken somewhere on the flight from Rome to New York.
A cloud is a visible mass of droplets, in other words, little drops of water or frozen crystals suspended in the atmosphere above the surface of the Earth or another planetary body. A cloud is also a visible mass attracted by gravity, such as masses of material in space called interstellar clouds and nebulae. Clouds are studied in the nephology or cloud physics branch of meteorology.
On Earth the condensing substance is typically water vapor, which forms small droplets or ice crystals, typically 0.01 mm (0.00039 in) in diameter. When surrounded by billions of other droplets or crystals they become visible as clouds. Dense deep clouds exhibit a high reflectance (70% to 95%) throughout the visible range of wavelengths. They thus appear white, at least from the top. Cloud droplets tend to scatter light efficiently, so that the intensity of the solar radiation decreases with depth into the gases, hence the gray or even sometimes dark appearance at the cloud base. Thin clouds may appear to have acquired the color of their environment or background and clouds illuminated by non-white light, such as during sunrise or sunset, may appear colored accordingly. Clouds look darker in the near-infrared because water absorbs solar radiation at those wavelengths.

During the last few weeks, I was thinking about a "Nine Inch Nails Photo Project" because I am pretty deep into Nine Inch Nails lately. The idea is to find photos that fit into a NIN song or a certain lyric. A pretty tough task since I am not really into dark, b/w, goth or industrial photography.
But I think about it every day.
