Yesterday afternoon my friend Dave Waddington found this White-fronted Goose within walking distance of both our houses. But I was busy cooking Sunday dinner yesterday, and this morning I had my first Covid jab booked, so I did not get chance to see it until this afternoon. I uploaded a photo of an adult White-fronted Goose recently with prominent black belly bars ( www.flickr.com/photos/timmelling/51001666498/in/dateposted/ ), but this one is a young bird, hatched in 2020 and lacking the belly stripes. It was feeding with a flock of Greylags near a small reservoir in South Yorkshire. I included a Greylag Goose here just to show the size difference. The White-front on the left weighs about 2.5kg (length 72cm, wingspan 148cm), whereas the Greylag on the right weighs about 3.6kg (length 82cm, wingspan 164cm). Female Greylags are a bit smaller, weighing about 3kg, but to my eyes the size difference between these two seems greater than the figures suggest.

There has been an unusually large influx of White-fronted Geese this winter and birds have been turning up in lots of unusual places. Two races of White-front winter in Britain; Greenland White-fronts which winter mainly in Scotland, and Russian White-fronts that winter mainly in the south. So living in Yorkshire means I don't get chance to see them very often near home. This one is a Russian bred bird, identifiable by its pink bill. Greenland bred bird have orange bills, though both races have orange legs. They get the name from the white patch around the bill.

56094 is seen passing the former site of the Maryport & Carlisle Railway's Bullgill station with 6C94 Workington - Carlisle yard.

A bizarre day as firstly the loco was sent in a Carlisle yard - Workington path when the crane it was collecting was actually sitting on Workington docks.

The loco then had to wait for 90 minutes at Workington, primarily because of issues with the ground frame that allows it on to the docks and presumably because it didn't have a path to get there.

I selected this location because although the crane's return to Carlisle was scheduled to depart Workington (not the docks!) at 14.10 the generous amount of time between passenger services meant that it could easily run early and if it did there could be sun on the front here.

The 90 minute late arrival at the docks meant that this was less likely but still a possibility. In the end it got away 106 minutes early. It wasn't soon enough for optimum sun position but I was just thankful that the advancing weather front seen above the hill had not reached me.

The steps down to the "up" platform can still be seen here, the platforms were staggered with the down behind me the other side of the bridge. The former sidings are now the site of a stables which have recently received a new concrete hardstanding whilst the yard has returned to nature.

Sri Lanka - Sinharaja Forest Reserve - The yellow-fronted barbet (Psilopogon flavifrons) is an Asian barbet which is an endemic resident breeder in Sri Lanka. The barbets get their name from the bristles which fringe their heavy bills.

This is a medium-sized barbet at 21 cm. It is a plump bird, with a short neck, large head and short tail. The adult yellow-fronted barbet has a mainly green body and wing plumage, with a scaly appearance to the breast. It has a blue face and throat, and a yellow crown and moustachial stripes. The white-fronted tern is the most common tern on the New Zealand coastline, at times occurring in flocks of many hundreds or even thousands of birds. It is mainly a marine species that is seldom found far from the coast. The name ‘white-fronted’ refers to the ‘frons’ or forehead, where a thin strip of white separates the black cap from the black bill. Most other ‘capped’ terns, including the black-fronted tern, have black caps that reach the bill when in breeding plumage. The scientific name striata refers to the finely-barred (striated) dorsal plumage of recently fledged white-fronted terns, as the original description and name was based on a juvenile bird painted by William Ellis, surgeon’s second mate on the Discovery, on Captain Cook’s third visit to New Zealand.

Thank you my Flickr friends. Two days in a row. How can this be?

I was lucky enough to have a few of them fly around my spot just after a swamp harrier appeared in the distance and they seemed to be disturbed from the harrier like all the other birds and presented themselves with a few passes giving the opportunity to get a few sequences. One of my favourite birds so i got as many photo's as i could in that short period. They are very fast, small and are a great challenge to capture in flight.

There are three attractive beaches are close to the village of Monreith. The largest is Monreith Bay. It is best visited at low tide when the wide expanse of sand is exposed. To reach it, park beside the A747 and take the long flight of 152 steps down to the beach below where there are public toilets. Just to the south of Monreith are the two beaches of Front and Back Bay. They are reached off the road to the St Medan's Golf Club, with a public car park beside Back Bay. Just off the road you'll see a bronze sculpture of an otter, a memorial to Gavin Maxwell, author of Ring of Bright Water. He spent his childhood at Monreith.

Front of a quick shirt I did for a mate.

Couldn't be doing with all the cleaning up that comes with using the foam roller method so sprayed straight onto the shirt. Kept the sprays nice and light so it didn't get all hard and nasty.
