Night herons stand still at the water's edge and wait to ambush prey. This fellow stood there for about 10 minutes testing my patience. Eventually, both of us got rewarded.

This black-and-white grebe is a bird of Western lakes and coastlines. We only see them at the Pacific Coast during the winter, since they typically breed and then spend the summer in freshwater inland lakes away from the coast.

A Caspian Tern in breeding plumage fishing in San Francisco's Crissy Field Marsh. ✔️

 

It's breeding time, so a colony is currently on a sandbank in the marsh just a few feet from the ocean, with males fishing in both freshwater and salt water and then bringing their catch to their females.
