I teach photography classes at the local Park & Rec and part of my curriculum is to teaching “The Three L’s” of a shot. Light. Location. Look. By “look” I mean the pose, position or emotion, etc. But I always teach the Three L’s in that order.
When people ask me how to become a better photographer, I almost always say “study light”. It was the response some random photographer in the field once told me years ago. He said that the best photographers are the ones who truly understand light and what it can do. Light has the biggest factor on a shot. Sure you could dress up a pretty model, and have her pose in a cute way in the middle of Paris. But 90% of the people with cameras given those resources could get the same thing. But if you get unique lighting… from the sun with clouds, or a strobe light, or other unique lighting, that’s what will set you apart.
Light is one of those things which is hard to teach. You just know it. If given a choice between perfect composition, perfect pose, perfect post-processing, perfect camera or perfect light, I would always choose perfect light.
I took this with my iPhone4 on the way home from work last week. Clouds from an upcoming storm were on the horizon, and even though it was shot through my dirty windshield, the unique light was worth the shot.

U.S. Route 89A is a north–south auxiliary U.S. highway, though its actual direction of travel is more east–west. The highway is an old routing of U.S. Route 89 from Bitter Springs, Arizona to Kanab, Utah. The state of Arizona has designated this highway the Fredonia-Vermilion Cliffs Scenic Road. The highway is used to access Grand Canyon National Park and is known for the Navajo Bridge. Until 2008, the Utah portion was signed State Route 11.
The highway's southern terminus is at U.S. Route 89 south of Page, Arizona. Its northern terminus is in Kanab, Utah, also as US 89. US 89A runs near or through Lee's Ferry, the Navajo Bridge, Vermilion Cliffs, the Kaibab Plateau, and Fredonia, Arizona. The eastern portion of the highway runs through part of the Navajo Nation. From Jacob Lake, State Route 67 leads south to the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. Then north to the neighboring cities of Fredonia, Arizona and Kanab, Utah.

There is something about long freeway drives. They have this quality of clearing one's mind and calming things down.... even resolving some stuff. I like long freeway drives.

Wow, what a hectic week. Friday was my last day as an insurance auditor (so no more traveling), today is my birthday (31), and tomorrow is the first day of my new job. I apologize to everyone for getting behind with comments and not posting as much as I would like. My new job is an office job 8-5 and my photo ops will be VERY limited. I dont know how often I will post but will try and keep up with everyone as you all have been amazing friends and great inspirations. I did decide that if today was to be my last post for awhile, then it should be of a sunset. Hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas and a Happy Holiday season.
