My latest Pocket Spirits in Victorian finery! From left to right are Felicia, Meghan, Catherine, Abby, and Rebekah. Their dresses are from the Annie Potter Presents leaflet "Victorian Darlings." I think it is out of print, but if you do a Google search you may find some used copies available.
Patterns for the doll, and some wearable creations of my own design, are available free on my blog at:
Enjoy!
I made this block for the Portland Modern Quilt Guild's Jay McCarroll Habitat block challenge. All blocks submitted will become a chairity quilt. I was going for an atomic 50's look (at least trying to!)… an era that makes me think of my utopia-like fantasy neighborhoods where neighbors where neighborly, socialized, had BBQ's, kids rode bikes with playing cards snapped to their spokes with clothes-pins, moms wore aprons and made Jello... or maybe I'm just thinking of the Edward Scissorhand's neighborhood.
my model, having been unable to get away for our shoot the other day, swung by where i teach to say good bye and offered me this shot in the parking lot. there was no set-up, given the possible repercussions if anyone noticed, but it's a nice little hint of what could have been a very sensual shoot.

I found this bike, a 1985 Sears Free Spirit Sheffield three-speed for sale on Henry Ave in front of Olga's Travel Agency. Olga bought this bike in 1985 and hasn't ridden it in 6 years. She didn't know how much to sell it for, so we agreed on $35. I gave her the $25 that I had, promised to bring the ten next time I drove by, and I took it home. I expect to put new wheels and hubs on it, and generally make it lighter. It's got a 3-speed hub right now, but I'll probably make it a single.
The frame is in nice shape. The brakes are scary and the shifting is nonexistent (the cable is shot). I see new wheels, tires, hubs, cranks, ring, brakes, levers, and maybe bottom bracket it it's near future... As this comes to pass, I'll take pictures. Additionally, I'll post some detail shots in the next couple of days.
Made these pouches today using this tutorial, keyka.typepad.com/my_weblog/2011/08/lets-make-dumplings-f...

Made with fabric from the Habitat line by Free Spirit designer Jay McCarroll as part of a Modern Quilt Guild challenge.
I received 6 fat eigths plus a tiny scrap of a seventh fabric. As per the rules I added in one solid (kona charcoal) and I'm hoping the binding doesn't count (kona daffodil or buttercup, I'm not sure which).
I was heavily influenced by this quilt for the design, which I called "Split the Deck" while I was making the top. I laid the fat eights down in a random order and cut as many 4.5" squares as I could. I then cut these along the 45" angle and sewed them together randomly by splitting the stack of triangles in half and pairing them up. Any time I had two of the same fabrics, I stacked the pile and split it back up again (like shuffling cards.) I managed to get 49 squares plus 2 triangles that were just an ooch too small, these ended up in the corners.
To make the central motif I split the stack of HST squares and dealt the deck as it came. if I didn't like the layout, I picked up the squares at random, turning 90degrees at random and re-dealt. I repeated this a couple of times before ending up with this random arrangement. I did the same random picking with the tiny scraps leftover from making squares to make the scrap pieced sashing.
The quilt is quilted with concentric squares radiating from the central HST. They are spaced around the square seams, a half inch either side of the ditch and then a second ring a half inch out from that. The quilt is about 33" square and used just about every last inch of the fabric I received.

A quick fitting to make sure the back, front, and armholes fit nicely on the doll. In this case, it looks like she's happy with the fit :-)
You could stop here, if you like, or go on and add another row to the bodice, make a picot edging, add sleeves (long or short); however you want your dress to be.
One learns quite quickly which subjects are amenable to a more direct approach when doing street photography. Sometimes the signs are subtle, and you have a "hunch" of whom to approach, and who is best photographed more surrepticiously, but ethically and legally.
When one sees a woman sporting a rainbow Mohawk, bubbling exuberance like a volcano, and unabashed confidence like a Navy Seal, it doesn't take much sophisticated analysis to know you got a "live one".
This young woman was a hoot. When she saw me with the camera she started "performing". This was one of the poses she struck amldst lots of laughter and checking in with me as to whether this or that pose was "hot".
Events like Pride and protests are fast paced photograph rich environments. In a way that is good, but upon meeting someone like this marvelous young woman, I would have appreciated the option of slowing down and just speaking with her and basking in her radiant disposition.
I do give out my cards, and invite folks to contact me and I will send them the image files. I'm running about 30% requests, which I think is pretty good.
