If you have the time, look at the translations of "learning" and "teaching" in the three less commonly taught languages. Finnish and Hungarian are Uralic languages (map)
I've heard it said that Chinese is a language with no bound grammatical morphemes. No idea whether this is true or not, but I do like the idea that the teaching/learning distinction is accomplished by word-order and a character that reminds me of a self-portrait I took some time back: 学
For the story of different words meaning language/dialect, and the evolution of the word yǔ (語/语) from "tell a story" (parabolare) into "speak" (hablar, parler), check this paragraph at Wikipedia :)
Can anyone tell me what this character for teaching/learning means all alone in Chinese ?
I'll add links to the Common European Framework in question (en | fr) in case anyone want to see the way your kids are going to be taught in the future (with fewer and fewer grades I hope). It's not as dull as most ISO-type standards are, because the kids are alright...
Please consider this an invitation to check out the freshly created group The Creolist, which need not be about language at all... :)

Where do the design frameworks we use and promote in permaculture come from? Permaculture is a magpie discipline taking useful material from many places and often forgetting where it took it from along the way – what can we collectively re-member? What are the histories of SADIMET, OBRDIMET and others – and might knowing those histories inform our use of them now?

The latest edition of the UN Population Fund’s State of the World Population report focuses on the largest generation of young people in history. Investing in the health and education of the 1.8 billion future leaders between 10 and 24 years is not only a recognition of their rights, but an imperative for global development.
Healthy and empowered young people, especially girls, have the potential to enable a “demographic dividend” for some countries – economic growth that results from declines in mortality and fertility rates. It is this potential that must be harnessed and realized as the global Sustainable Development Goals are being defined.
Join us at the Wilson Center for a panel discussion about the report, which calls for investments in young people to be at the center of a new development framework.

The WMO Policy Framework on Public-Private Engagement was the first WMO formally approved document on the issue of public-private engagement and partnership in the so called "weather enterprise". The Framework provides a set of basic principles for successful public-private engagement between the state sector players, like the NMHSs, and stakeholders from the private and academic sectors. Jaroslav Romanchuck, distinguished Belarus politician and renowned economist presents “The Morality of Capitalism and Ayn Rand”
Jaroslav Romanchuk, a presidential candidate in Belarus in 2010, will present a unique conference entitled “The Morality of Capitalism and Ayn Rand” on February 11, 2013 at the Institute for Cuban and Cuban-American Studies (ICCAS) of the University of Miami, 1531 Brescia Avenue in the Coral Gables campus, with cocktails at 6:30 p.m., followed by the presentation at 7:00 p.m.
This timely conference is designed to provide the community in South Florida with the opportunity to hear, first hand, the views of a leading libertarian economist and political figure in the former Soviet republic and engage in a dynamic conversation about the importance of individual rights, free-enterprise, small government and strong personal freedoms.
“I’m honored to have been invited to present this critical topic, which drives my political and economic thinking, to the audience in Miami”, says Romanchuck, President of the Scientific Research Mises Center in Minsk. “It’s a great opportunity to share my views on the true meaning of capitalism, the new clothes of socialism and the framework of a moral social economic system, especially with the Cuban-American community who, like Belarusians, understand full well the evils of socialism.”
Following the presentation there will be a question and answer session with a distinguished panel of political thinkers, including Dr. Jose Azel, senior scholar at the ICCAS and author of Mañana in Cuba: The Legacy of Castroism and Transitional Challenge for Cuba, Glenn Cripe, co-founder and Executive Director of The Language of Liberty Institute and Olga Nodarse Chao, Founder of The Cuba Corps and author of Freedom Embattled. Dr. Andy S. Gomez, senior fellow at ICCAS, University of Miami will be the moderator.
This event is co-sponsored by The Cuba Corps, ICCAS, and the National Association of Cuban-American Educators (NACAE). Founded in 2005, The Cuba Corp’s mission is to help rebuild civil society in Cuba. ICCAS serves as a world class academic center for the research and study of Cuban and Cuban-American Studies. NACAE represents the interests of Cuban-American educators at all levels and promotes their accomplishments. It also contributes to the preservation of the Cuban cultural heritage and the promotion of the principles of liberty and civil rights.
Looking far down from one of the bridges, we noticed an art like framework within the mud flat at low tide. The array of wildlife (most birds) footprints, along with the crab(s), created an interesting subject matter with fascinating texture to photograph. This is the result of cropping greatly to zoom in on the crab, itself, so unlike the far away shot (1 of 2) previous to this, the footprints are not visible.
Mill Creek Marsh, with its vast array of wildlife, never ceases to amaze visitors of nature’s wonders, right here in the great metropolis. Seasonal changes always keep things interesting and fresh, with the wide range of migratory birds, furry critters, reptiles, insects, and plants appearing at different times of the year. What makes the central landscape so unique is the fact that it was once a thriving white cedar forest centuries ago, only to be altered by man, but leaving the resilient stumps, hauntingly protruding from the marsh waters, while dramatically altering the scenery depending on the tide level and weather conditions. It is one of the most fascinating landscapes for photographers and nature enthusiasts. The main circuit trail is slightly over a mile in length, and the view of the aforementioned is always present. Golden hour—early in the morning or later in the day—is simply magnificent here, and the views toward any direction are unlike anything else. In addition, the New York City skyscrapers to the east can also be quite rewarding, with varying moods at any given time. Check out some of the SETS related to the Meadowlands, including Mill Creek Marsh, Richard DeKorte Park, and Laurel Hill Park.

Leer & ontwikkel capaciteiten

I have this fascination with bridges, their vast frameworks, their lines and forms, how they sometimes overshadow and neutralize us. Here, my friend Clay seems almost to be swept forward by the energy of the bridge’s perspectives.
All these Manhattan Bridge photos bring Copland's MUSIC FOR A GREAT CITY to mind.
