A few captures of our extremely skittish White Pelicans! I also know that some of you want to see more of the background in the scenes and will work in a bit of the bayou in this capture with some of the reeds and trees in the background!! This old tree trunk has become lodged in a shallow area at the mouth of Horsepen and it's a prime gathering place for these skittish characters! I think they know I'm trying to sneak up on them!

Actually these critters were oblivious to the cold and me. And, of course, I was the only nut in the park, besides the contents of the squirrel pantries. It was cold!

...and the four fox cubs are still around the den and are clearly quite healthy. The badger 'aggressor' is the sow. Never argue with a hungry badger!

Four Peaks Wilderness in Arizona's Tonto National Forest is rugged desert-to-alpine magic rising dramatically from the Sonoran landscape.
This 60,740-acre wilderness (designated in 1984) centers on the iconic Four Peaks massif in the Mazatzal Mountains—visible for miles across the Phoenix metro area, about 40 miles east-northeast of the city. The northernmost summit, Brown's Peak (7,657 ft), is the highest point in Maricopa County and offers epic 360° views that can stretch to Humphreys Peak near Flagstaff on clear days.
Elevations soar from ~1,900 ft near Apache Lake to over 7,600 ft, transitioning from saguaro-studded desert grasslands through manzanita thickets, pinyon-juniper, and pockets of ponderosa pine and aspen.
Home to one of Arizona's densest black bear populations, plus ringtails, coyotes, mountain lions, and diverse birdlife, it's a true backcountry haven. The Arizona Trail's challenging Passage 20 slices through here with steep ridges, panoramic overlooks of Roosevelt Lake, Apache Lake, and the Superstition Wilderness—plus wildflowers, cacti, and seasonal streams. Popular hikes include the strenuous Brown's Trail (scrambling to the summit with exposure and scree) and the Four Peaks Trail, but many paths are rustic and lightly used.
Access often requires high-clearance 4x4 (like FR 143/648 from SR 87—the Beeline Highway) to trailheads like Lone Pine Saddle—rough, rutted, and adventurous! Year-round visits possible, but spring for blooms, fall for milder temps, and winter for rare snow-capped views. No permits needed for day use, but follow Leave No Trace—group size limits apply (15 people/15 stock max).
Pro tip: Check road/trail conditions with the Mesa Ranger District (fire closures happen), bring plenty of water (purify sources), and go early to beat heat and crowds—this spot feels worlds away from the valley yet so close to home for Arizonans!

On the flight from Homer out to Hallo Bay when we dropped throught the clouds we were struck with the sight of Four Peaked Glacier and its lake,tucked between Four Peaked Mountain and Mount Douglas.

I really like shooting perspective, so when I looked up and saw how these four buildings in Macau seemed to converge, I just had to change to an Ultra Wide lens. Hehe.

Quite happy with this considering it's with the 300 f/4 that has no VR and the 1.4 convertor on.
Might even take an L press.....in fact Z doesn't look too bad.

I recently had the opportunity to be with a number of amazing and some silly horses as a part of a photography tour at Redwings Horse Sanctuary in Paso Robles, California. It’s a wonderful organization offering rehoming, medical care, and a place to spend final days over the wandering hillsides of Paso. I have many images to share. These beauties lined up nicely during the golden hour.
