we recently returned from a two month trip to asia. we visited china, tibet, nepal, bhutan, india, burma and japan.
just us two (not a "tour"), our backpacks and sense of adventure.
we have been in burma before, but this time we spent more time in this beautiful country.
we had an amazing time on our trip.

EXPLANATION OF THIS PIECE:
in burma there is the belief among boys and men (and their families) that a tattoo will prevent death from snake bites or being shot by a gun. the tattoo is often the burmese alphabet (in some form).
we met a man whose mother tattooed him when he was a young boy. he was subsequently bitten by a snake...and did not die. he attributes this to the protection of the tattoo. he has never been shot by a gun, although he has ventured into some dangerous areas in burma.
My most recent mixed metal assemblage/art doll. I had been wanting to do a mermaid for a while and the wonderful face from graphixoutpost and pewter hands from pinksupply seemed to make it happen.

SOLD
this art piece was sold (before i joined flickr) as a result of an art show i was in. an art loving patron took my business card, went on my website, saw it and wrote to me saying she wanted to buy it.

This image shows a curated collection of sea glass (beach glass) gathered from various sources and arranged as a tabletop still life.
Visible colors include:
* White/clear
* Amber and honey
* Olive and lime green
* Emerald green
* Aqua and seafoam
* Light blue
* Cobalt blue
* Red
* Brown
Several pieces exhibit the classic characteristics of mature sea glass:
* Rounded edges
* Uniform frosting
* Surface pitting from abrasion
* Loss of original bottle or container shape
A few objects appear to be quartz, polished pebbles, ceramic fragments, or less-weathered glass mixed into the collection.

Description
The frame is densely filled with overlapping pieces of colored glass and stone.
Two large emerald-green pieces near the center act as visual anchors. Around them are clusters of cobalt blue, pale aqua, amber, and clear glass. The composition contains virtually no empty space, creating a rich visual field of color, shape, and texture.
The lighting from the upper left and upper right creates:
* Soft highlights on curved surfaces
* Subtle shadows between objects
* Enhanced visibility of frosting and weathering
* Strong color saturation without excessive translucency
The image emphasizes the tactile qualities of the material as much as its color.

Discussion as Art
This photograph functions as an abstract still life built from found objects.
Color
Color is the primary visual language.
Cool blues and greens dominate the center, while warm ambers, reds, and browns provide contrast throughout the frame. The arrangement feels balanced despite the apparent randomness.
Texture
The weathered surfaces are central to the image’s appeal.
The sea glass carries evidence of years or decades of ocean abrasion. The frosted finish diffuses light and creates a soft, almost velvety appearance.
Pattern and Density
The edge-to-edge arrangement produces a mosaic-like structure. The eye moves continuously through the frame discovering new shapes and color relationships.
Transformation
One of the strongest conceptual elements is transformation:
* Manufactured objects become discarded waste.
* The ocean reshapes them into organic forms.
* Collection and photography elevate them into aesthetic objects.
The image can be viewed as a study of:
* Time
* Weathering
* Color
* Accumulation
* Environmental transformation
Artistic Influences
The photograph relates to:
* Abstract photography
* Cabinet-of-curiosities collections
* Scientific specimen photography
* Color-field composition
* Contemporary found-object art
The result is both documentary and abstract: a record of physical objects that simultaneously becomes an exploration of light, color, and form.
Found Objects Project
This is the original study for photographing the lamp. Please have a look at the final version.
When I was about ten years old, I found this perfectly round stone on the beach on an island in Puget Sound.
